The Cursed (2021)
The #1 Horror Movie on Netflix is Star-Studded and Has “Insanely cool special effects”
The Cursed (2021)
Werewolf movies are hard to get right. The creature design and transformation sequences are crucial to the success of these films, yet both are notoriously expensive to render. As such, there are a handful of classic lycanthrope pictures that we keep going back to, but few recent efforts seem to stand the test of time.

With that said, there are at least a handful of contemporary werewolf films that get more right than wrong. At least one such example seems to have flown largely under the radar thanks to a lackluster showing at the box office.

I’m talking about The Cursed. The film, which sometimes gets mistaken for Wes Craven’s Cursed, plays out like this: In 19th-century France, a man arrives in a remote country village to investigate an attack by a wild animal. However, he soon discovers a much deeper and sinister force that has the manor...

Pour One Out For Tivik, The Most Important Star Wars Character No One Talks About
Image
Let's give it up for a man named Tivik. Without him, there's every chance that Alderaan wouldn't have been the only planet destroyed by the Death Star in "Star Wars: Episode IV -- A New Hope." Sure, a lot of people can make that claim: Galen Erso, Jyn Erso, Luthen Rael, Cassian Andor, Bodhi Rook. But they all get their place in the spotlight and we talk about them. So much digital ink gets spilled all over those characters, yet Tivik just waits for his day in the sun, so we're going to give it to him.

For those who don't remember him, Tivik appeared at the beginning of "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" (where he was portrayed by actor Daniel Mays). The "Star Wars" universe is full of fascinating side characters, yet Tivik found himself tucked away in the back alleys of the Ring of Kafrene, an asteroid-based environment.

Andor Creator, Genevieve O’Reilly Discuss Mon Mothma’s Series-Ending Make-Under: ‘There’s Not a Great Salon on Yavin Yet’
Image
Having played Mon Mothma: Low-Maintenance Rebel Alliance Leader in 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (as well as in mostly deleted scenes from 2005’s Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith), Genevieve O’Reilly knew throughout her Andor run that a major make-under awaited her at the end of the Disney+ prequel series.

“We always knew that that’s where she had to be,” O’Reilly notes in the TVLine video below. But what made the “return” of that circa-Rogue One Mon Mothma fun is how Andor Season 2 leaned into the senator and mother-of-the-bride’s glam self.

Andor Finale's Tivik Reveal & Star Wars: Rogue One Connection Explained
Image
The Andor Season 2 finale featured an exciting Star Wars: Rogue One connection relating to Daniel Mays' Tivik. After two seasons of sewing the seeds of the Rebellion, showrunner Tony Gilroy finally lit the flame that would become the Rebel attack on the Death Star in Star Wars: A New Hope.

Daniel Mays' Tivik, a character seen in the first few minutes of Rogue One, got a unique cameo at the end of Andor Season 2, sending Diego Luna's titular spy from the hit series onto the path toward his siege to steal the Death Star plans. Tivik's name popped up in the Disney+ series in Season 2, Episode 12, as Alistair Petrie's General Draven informed Andor that he had an incoming message from one of his operatives in the field.

10 Easter Eggs in Andor season 2 Episodes 7-9 you may have missed
Image
The third arc of Andor season 2 is some of the best Star Wars TV ever made. The sense of impending doom leading up to the Ghorman massacre, intertwined with the eerie background score and Les Misérables-esque chorus in Episode 8, is perhaps showrunner Tony Gilroy’s most ambitious masterpiece.

Episodes 8 and 9 are currently rated 9.8 on IMDb, making them the show's highest-rated episodes to date. Season 1's "One Way Out" has a 9.5 rating.

The writer of this three-episode arc, Dan Gilroy, keeps the story poignant yet courageous and dares to drop words like “genocide,” but also delivers on the promised connections with the existing Star Wars lore.

From K-2So’s origin story to Mon Mothma’s Rebels connection, here are 10 Easter eggs from Andor season 2 episodes 7-9: "Messenger," "Who Are You?" and "Welcome to the Rebellion."

‘Andor’ Week 3: Walking Into a Trap
Image
This post contains spoilers for this week’s episodes of Andor, now streaming on Disney+.

The decision to compress what was once meant to be four seasons of Andor into one hasn’t been without its bumps, including in this week’s trio of episodes. Character arcs have felt rushed or underfed, particularly this week with Cassian and Bix. Lots of important events and growth have had to happen offscreen, like Syril learning to play spy with the Ghorman resistance. And at times, like the scene this week where the...

Jason Statham's 'The Bank Job' is a Streaming Hit on Starz
Image
Jason Statham is the darling of streaming right now, and another of his decade-old action thrillers is back on top with the 2008 heist movie The Bank Job holding a strong position near the top of the Starz global movie chart. Led by the ever-popular Brit and directed by Roger Donaldson, the plot centers on a real-life 1971 robbery that took place in London and has baffled authorities for decades and is the perfect vehicle for Statham, even if he doesn’t get to go vigilante this time around.

Being inspired by true events, the film was a more intriguing title in Statham’s catalog of gangster movies and no-brainer action flicks, and that seemed to help it become a box office success and made it one of Statham’s most underrated and overlooked performances. The plot sees Statham playing small-time crook Terry Leather, who takes on a job without expecting to...

The Night Manager Season 2: Confirmation, Cast & Everything We Know
Image
Years after the first season of the BBC spy drama The Night Manager aired, season 2 was officially announced with Tom Hiddleston returning. Based on the book by MI6 intelligence officer turned novelist John le Carré, The Night Manager was adapted for the small screen by Hanna creator David Farr and directed by Bird Box helmer Susanne Bier. The first season of The Night Manager received widespread critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic and the series went on to win three Golden Globes, two Emmys, and three BAFTAs. Although the first season covered almost all of John le Carré’s novel, the success of The Night Manager left viewers wanting more.

Magpie Review: Daisy Ridley Stuns In Compelling, Intoxicating Psychological Thriller
Image
This review was originally published during the 2024 SXSW Film Festival.

Domestic thrillers can be deliciously messy, but Magpie, starring the alluring Daisy Ridley in an ambitious and delectable role, takes things to the next level. The psychological thriller is engrossing, its slow-burn buildup feeding the fire that burns brightly in an immensely satisfying final act that is equal parts chilling and petty. Magpie turns certain tropes into narrative weapons, and it works at every turn, culminating in a finale that will leave you wanting more even as it gives us a tension-fueled conclusion.

Magpie Review | Daisy Ridley's Seductive Neo-Noir Slow-Burn

Before returning to the front row of the mainstream with more Star Wars projects, Daisy Ridley has been on a tear lately with smaller, more interesting films, such as the recent Young Woman and the Sea and her wildly different drama, Sometimes I Think About Dying, before that. Those two showcased her ability to pull off a flawless American accent as is the case with many acclaimed English performers but now she's back to her native voice with Magpie, a gripping neo-noir set in the U.K. that sees her taking names as an embattled wife and mom of two trying to navigate a fractured marriage thanks to a somewhat bonehead husband.

The film is directed by Sam Yates and written by Tom Bateman, Ridley's spouse, and she developed the story of Magpie. It's co-produced by Bateman and Ridley, so you know this is a project she's passionate about.

Olivia Colman at an event for The Oscars (2019)
The Night Manager | BBC confirms returning cast
Olivia Colman at an event for The Oscars (2019)
Olivia Colman is among the cast returning for series 2 of The Night Manager, and here are the details.

Back in 2018, The Night Manager was a huge hit for the BBC, winning 36 awards including two Emmys, a BAFTA and several Golden Globes.

Adapted from the 1993 novel by John Le Carre, the show followed Jonathan Pine (Tom Hiddleston), the night manager of a high class hotel in Cairo, who is recruited by Angela Burr (Olivia Colman), the manager of a Foreign Office task force, to infiltrate the inner circle of sinister arms dealer Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie).

Earlier this year, the BBC confirmed that two more series have been commissioned and will be filmed back to back, presumably owing to Hiddleston’s busy schedule. Farr returned to write the scripts,...
