Continuing our coverage of the 11th annual Screamfest La Film Festival, which runs through October 22nd at Manns Chinese 6 in Hollywood, California, we hit the carpet on Sunday, October 16th, to bring you further ocular candy and to catch the premieres of the features DeadHeads and Julia X 3D as well as a screening of the currently touring Chillerama.

Those walking the black carpet and in attendance for the evening included DeadHeads writers/directors Brett Pierce and Drew T. Pierce with cast members Michael McKiddy, Ross Kidder, Greg Dow, Kasey Bell and Natalie Victoria as well as Julia X 3D director P.J. Pettiette and producer Claude Viguerie. Joining them were Chillerama filmmakers Adam Green, Joe Lynch, Adam Rifkin and Tim Sullivan. Filmmaker Mick Garris and actors Lin Shaye, Ray Wise and more were also in attendance.

Not only did I get to experience the 3D coolness of Julia X 3D at Screamfest on Sunday, but I also got the chance to talk with the film’s writer/director P.J. Pettiette at the black carpet!

Adam Cray: How did you become involved with Julia X 3D?

P.J. Pettiette: My producing partner Claudie Viguerie and I did a picture in Argentina, then a picture I produced in Ireland, so I was looking for something to direct. I had this story idea and I thought “Well, what’s scary to me? Not supernatural.” There are a lot of films and I thought “I’ve done that” so with this one I thought: “If I were a woman and I was on an internet date and I got abducted, I’d be kind of scared…What if I was the woman that got abducted and I turned out to be a serial killer too?...

Julia X 3D begins innocently enough with beautiful blonde Julia on a date with the handsome guy she’s met online (known only as “The Stranger”). Before we know it, The Stranger chains Julia in his van and she’s forced to watch him dispose of his previous victim before bringing her to his warehouse lair. So begins a night-long descent into madness as Julia escapes and The Stranger chases her into the woods, through his isolated house, the swamp, and an abandoned school before the tables turn in an unexpected manner.

Kevin Sorbo is a menacing delight as The Stranger, the nutcase who’s been luring girls from online chatrooms to their certain doom all to the tune of The Carpenters’ “Close to You” on his iPod. As the film goes on, the song becomes a dark comical foreshadowing to the carnage that Sorbo’s character is about to inflict: we hear the song,...

With the Screamfest La Film Festival now under way through October 22nd at Manns Chinese 6 in Hollywood, California, we chatted recently with P.J. Pettiette, the director of one of the fest's selections, the 3D feature Julia X, and got the skinny on the horror-comedy flick, which is having its U.S. premiere this evening, October 16th.

Written by Matt Cunningham and produced by Greg Hall, Claude Viguerie and the film’s director Pettiette, Julia X 3D stars Valerie Azlynn, Kevin Sorbo, Alicia Leigh Willis, Joel Moore, and Ving Rhames and follows, "’Julia’ (Azlynn) who meets a man on her third Internet date. As she is is leaving, she is abducted by ‘The Stranger’ (Sorbo) and branded with an ‘X’. After a cat-and-mouse game, she eventually subdues The Stranger, and we discover that Julia and her younger sister, Jessica (Willis), are Internet predators themselves."

The resurgence of 3D technology to “enhance” films has been the subject of much debate over the past few years. Given the number of films that have been released under the 3D banner, it’s fair to say that the advanced technology has ignited a spark within movie studios and in the general public who have been yearning for the next best thing. Given the price of 3D cameras, many filmmakers and studios saw the route of “post conversion” as a valuable means to release their film under the popular banner; even if it negatively affected the quality of the film. Here's a horror film in which a serial killer kidnaps a beautiful woman, only to learn (the hard way) that she's actually a serial killer herself. And a pretty damn good one, too. If that one little nugget of a premise sounds outrageous to you, then you'll probably have a ball with P.J. Pettiette's debut effort Julia X. If you're expecting much more than that, I'm sorry to report that this allegedly comedic horror film offers little aside from that one meager hook. Ok, actually the beautiful woman serial killer also has a gorgeous younger sister. She, too, is a murderer. A rather enthusiastic one. Genre fans already know Kevin Sorbo for his long-running stints on Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Andromeda, two shows for which he's earned international stardom on the small screen, and in recent years the erstwhile Hercules/Dylan Hunt has branched out by adding Christian flicks to his resume. Kevin Sorbo played the title character in 111 episodes of the syndicated TV series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, ending his run in 1999. Perhaps he still feels typecast as a heroic figure, and so that prompted him to accept the lead role in Julia X 3D, in which he plays a serial killer known only as The Stranger. The movie is meant to play as a dark comedy, at least according to director P.J. Pettiette, who introduced the film for its Fantastic Fest premiere at the Alamo Drafthouse. Julia (Valerie Azlynn) stars as an alluring predator who meets her match on an internet date with a man whose hidden profile is a blend of Ted Bundy and Hannibal Lechter. The man in question is none other than “Hercules” himself, Kevin Sorbo, who The Hollywood Reporter says “he’s a mesmeric nutcase.” The Reporter continues, “The depth is enhanced, as well, by a multi-dimensional plot with doses of cheeky humor and verbal panache, as well as in-your-face visual thrusts that make keen use of the format.

Continuing our look at the films playing at Fantastic Fest this month (an event Shock will be attending), we have a large photo gallery to share with you from Julia X , starring Valerie Azlynn, Kevin Sorbo, Hatchet 's Joel Moore and Ving Rhames. Sorbo plays a serial killer in this one, a psycho who prowls the Internet for victims. He brands his prey alphabetically, and his next gal, Julia, will represent his "X." She proves to be a tough kill, however. P.J. Pettiette makes his directorial debut, working from a script he penned with Matt Cunningham. Screamfest La, the preeminent horror festival in the country, kicks off its 11th annual event in Los Angeles on October 14 and runs through October 23. Festival founder Rachel Belofsky announced the first wave of this year's entries, and if I were you, I'd do my best to be in La during those dates!

This year’s films include the world premiere of Victor Salva’s Rosewood Lane starring Rose McGowan and the La premiere of the French film Livide (Livid). The annual festival, honoring the best in horror and fantasy and those who bring it to life, takes place at the Chinese 6 Theatres in Hollywood & Highland Center (6801 Hollywood Blvd).

Guess it's just a centipede-y kind of day. Aubrey already showed you a new preview image from "The Human Centipede 2: Full Sequence." Now I've got the info on where you'll be able to see the film for the very first time: Austin's Fantastic Fest, on September 22. The deranged depravity debuts as this year's Opening Night Film.

Along with the announcement that director Tom Six's sequel to everyone's favorite ass-to-mouth horror movie will make its world premiere at the festival, Fantastic Fest also solidified the remainder of its lineup today. Wow. In two weeks, Michael and I will begin our 14 hour drive from St. Louis to Austin. We are super excited to be attending and giving you guys advance reviews of films that, more than likely, every horror and genre loving freak out there will want to read. The final wave has been announced and while we only see that we got one more hit on our prediction list, I’m still happy with what was announced. Hollywoodnews.com: Only the folks at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin would try and use the words “Fantastic” and “Human Centipede” in the same sentence. Yet it’s that unique taste in spectacular genre cinema that keeps thousands flocking to Fantastic Fest in Austin each fall, and this year’s slate shouldn’t disappoint.

Tom Six’s sequel to his vile “Human Centipede” will hold its world premiere on opening night of this year’s Fantastic Fest, which runs Sept. 22-29 in Austin, Tex.

Other notable films programmed for this year’s fest include a retrospective screening of John Landis’s “An American Werewolf in London,” the Texas premiere of Jeff Nichols’s “Take Shelter,” and Morgan Spurlock’s “Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope,” which will close this year’s event.

The premiere of the psychological thriller Jennifer's Shadow, starring Faye Dunaway, at the upcoming Marche du Film in Cannes will mark the launch of new sales outfit Hybrid Pictures International. Based in Los Angeles, Hybrid will initially focus on selling product from its parent company, Hybrid Pictures, and its Argentinean branch, Etoile Filante Prods., concentrating on international directors and Argentinean talent. Hybrid's PJ Pettiette will handle production, finance and distribution, with Claudie Viguerie overseeing all international sales.
