Oscars In Memoriam Leaves Off Anne Heche, Tom Sizemore and ‘Triangle of Sadness’ Star Charlbi Dean (Video)
Anne Heche
Every year the “In Memoriam” tribute at the Oscars leaves off a few fan favorites and 2023 was no exception: Among those who weren’t included in Sunday night’s video montage were Anne Heche, “Saving Private Ryan” star Tom Sizemore and Charlbi Dean, who appeared in this year’s Best Picture nominee “Triangle of Sadness.”

Fans also noted the absence of Cindy Williams: While she was best known for the ’70s TV sitcom “Laverne & Shirley,” she notably appeared in two classic films of the era, George Lucas’ “American Graffiti” and Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Conversation.”

And while the tribute included “Goodfellas” star Ray Liotta, who died unexpectedly on May 26, 2022, his costar Paul Sorvino, who died in July 2022, was left out.

Steven Spielberg says services like HBO Max threw filmmakers ‘under the bus’
Image
Steven Spielberg said services such as HBO Max are throwing filmmakers “under the bus”.

The 75-year-old film director seemed to be referring to high-profile new films that are being released on streaming platforms and not theatres.

“The pandemic created an opportunity for streaming platforms to raise their subscriptions to record-breaking levels and also throw some of my best filmmaker friends under the bus as their movies were unceremoniously not given theatrical releases,” Spielberg told The New York Times.

“They were paid off and the films were suddenly relegated to, in this case, HBO Max. The case I’m talking about. And then everything started to change.

“I think older audiences were relieved that they didn’t have to step on sticky popcorn,” he added.

“But I really believe those same older audiences, once they got into the theatre, the magic of being in a social situation with a bunch of strangers is a tonic…...

Leslie Phillips obituary
Leslie Phillips
Veteran stage and screen actor known for his roles in the Carry On films, the Doctor series and voicing the Sorting Hat in Harry Potter

Leslie Phillips, who has died aged 98, was a light comedian of the old school, closely associated with a roster of smooth-talking cads and lady-killers in the series of Carry On and Doctor films he graced from the late 1950s onwards.

He first coined his trademark phrase “I say, ding dong!” as the lubricious Jack Bell in Carry On Nurse (1958) and made the simple greeting “hello” sound like a frolicsome, impure invitation, earning him the nickname “King Leer” and lending itself to the one-word title of his immensely entertaining autobiography (2006).

I’m a Celeb: Chris Moyles ‘nearly drowning’ in Bushtucker Trial sparks debate among fans
Chris Moyles
I’m a Celebrity’s first Bushtucker Trial has resulted in some viewer concerns over Chris Moyles’s safety.

During Monday night’s (7 November) episode of the much-loved survival programme, four contestants took part in the first big task of the season, in order to win meals for the camp.

Moyles, Boy George, Scarlette Douglas and Olivia Attwood had been selected via a public vote to compete in a trial named “Hms Drown Under”.

While Moyles and Boy George were placed in tanks with goggles over their eyes, Attwood and Douglas were in charge of unscrewing taps that were hidden in small holes in a wall, dodging spiders, snakes, entrails and other unsavoury items.

As Attwood and Douglas unscrewed, Moyles and Boy George’s tanks began to fill with cold water that steadily rose as the challenge progressed.

As time went on, the Radio X DJ became increasingly nervous.

The task ended after 10 minutes,...

Leslie Phillips: master of raffish comedy and immortal catchphrases
Gene Kelly
He punched Gene Kelly in Hollywood and played Falstaff at the RSC, but he will be best remembered as a posh, blazer-wearing cad in films and on TV – and for an innuendo-laden greeting

• Carry On star Leslie Phillips dies at 98

Leslie Phillips once said that his memoirs might be called From Bed to Worse, in honour of his raffish characters getting into scrapes because of their philandering ways. Or possibly From Leer to Lear, because of his transition to national treasure and Shakespearean character actor in the 1980s and 90s. But, in the end, there was no dispute about what it should be called: Hello. That was his outrageously lascivious catchphrase pronounced almost as “herl–air–oh”, part of the ladies’ man image in the Doctor movies and two or three of the Carry On films that made his name in the world of British light comedy in the 60s.

Leslie Phillips, the British actor and Casanova of the Carry On movies who turned to serious supporting roles in Out of Africa and Empire of the Sun before voicing The Sorting Hat in the Harry Potter franchise, has died. He was 98.

Phillips died peacefully in his sleep on Monday, agent Jonathan Lloyd told the BBC on Tuesday.

With an eye for the ladies onscreen and off, the sophisticated Phillips appeared in more than 170 roles across screens big and small, portraying policemen, military officials, reverends and judges. But for audiences in the 1950s and ’60s, he was synonymous with the low-budget Carry On and Doctor series (he took over from Dirk Bogarde in the latter).

In the ’80s, he distanced himself from his playboy roles to lend gravitas to Sydney Pollack’s Oscar best picture winner Out of Africa (1985) and to Steven Spielberg’s...

Warner Bros wants to make more Harry Potter movies with Jk Rowling’s involvement
Image
Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav has suggested the company will try and make more Harry Potter sequels – with Jk Rowling’s involvement.

The company produced eight Harry Potter films between 2001 and 2011, starting with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and ending with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.

In the years since the saga ended, Warner Bros has also produced three films in the spin-off franchise Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, also with Rowling on board.

However, amid underwhelming box office returns and controversy behind the scenes involving members of its cast, the franchise was seemingly abandoned after this year’s Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.

During an investors’ call on Friday, Zaslav said (per The Hollywood Reporter) that the company was going to “focus on franchises” going forward.

“We haven’t had a Superman movie in 13 years. We haven’t done a Harry Potter in 15 years.

Pool of London
Image
I’d never heard of this gem of a British production; now it goes on my list of highly recommended titles. A dock area on the Thames is ‘the pool,’ and the sailors that disembark from the cargo ships are susceptible to the temptations of black market trade. A single eventful weekend traces the fates of a half-dozen young people, the women that like the sailors, and the sailor that gets mixed up in a deadly serious crime. Director Basil Dearden’s excellent cast is mostly unfamiliar to us Yanks, but we get really tied up in their problems. This picture should be much better known. It’s the first English movie to depict an interracial romance, and it does so without sensationalism or special pleading. The best new extra is an interview with actor Earl Cameron, who at 103 years of age has his act (and his memories) totally together.

Actually, the comedy and the actresses get more attention than does Kelly. Star Trek’s George Takei: ‘I’d take a female friend to premieres. Then go out to a gay bar’
The one-time Mr Sulu is unique among the Star Trek fraternity for having become more famous and adored since he left the Starship Enterprise. So, what’s his problem with Jj Abrams’ blockbuster reboot?

A few months ago, George Takei was all over the internet. Admittedly, there’s nothing unusual about that. The online presence of the sparkly-eyed 79-year-old, formerly known as Mr Sulu from Star Trek, is genuinely ubiquitous; it can sometimes feel as though it’s his internet and the rest of us are merely squatters. His popularity could be measured purely in social media statistics (nearly 10m Facebook likes, 1.8 million followers on Twitter and 889,000 on Instagram) but that wouldn’t show how he uses those channels to encourage inclusivity and to speak out against bigotry and injustice with a wit that never loses its warmth. Takei is so charismatic, playful and intelligent that he has pulled off...

'Play Misty for Me': Rabid fan Jessica Walter makes life difficult for disc jockey Clint Eastwood. Clint Eastwood, 'Harry Potter' and 'The Decline of Western Civilization': Packard Campus movies Movies set in the world of music and/or radio are among the April 2016 highlights at the Library of Congress' Packard Campus Theater in Culpeper, Virginia. Packard Campus Recorded Sound Curator Matt Barton selected the documentaries and narrative features in this particular program, which, according to the Theater's press release, includes “several rarely projected films in original release prints from the Library's holdings.” Radio/music titles include: Clint Eastwood's 1971 feature film directorial debut, the thriller Play Misty for Me, starring Jessica Walter as a woman obsessed with both a late night disc jockey (Eastwood) and the song “Misty,” jazzily played by Errol Garner at the piano. Also in the cast: Donna Mills, frequent Eastwood director Don Siegel (Dirty Harry,...

Leigh Day on TCM: From Southern Belle in 'Controversial' Epic to Rape Victim in Code-Buster
Vivien Leigh ca. late 1940s. Vivien Leigh movies: now controversial 'Gone with the Wind,' little-seen '21 Days Together' on TCM Vivien Leigh is Turner Classic Movies' star today, Aug. 18, '15, as TCM's “Summer Under the Stars” series continues. Mostly a stage actress, Leigh was seen in only 19 films – in about 15 of which as a leading lady or star – in a movie career spanning three decades. Good for the relatively few who saw her on stage; bad for all those who have access to only a few performances of one of the most remarkable acting talents of the 20th century. This evening, TCM is showing three Vivien Leigh movies: Gone with the Wind (1939), 21 Days Together (1940), and A Streetcar Named Desire (1951). Leigh won Best Actress Academy Awards for the first and the third title. The little-remembered film in-between is a TCM premiere. 'Gone with the Wind' Seemingly all...

Early Black Film Actor Has His Day
Rex Ingram in 'The Thief of Bagdad' 1940 with tiny Sabu. Actor Rex Ingram movies on TCM: Early black film performer in 'Cabin in the Sky,' 'Anna Lucasta' It's somewhat unusual for two well-known film celebrities, whether past or present, to share the same name.* One such rarity is – or rather, are – the two movie people known as Rex Ingram;† one an Irish-born white director, the other an Illinois-born black actor. Turner Classic Movies' “Summer Under the Stars” continues today, Aug. 11, '15, with a day dedicated to the latter. Right now, TCM is showing Cabin in the Sky (1943), an all-black musical adaptation of the Faust tale that is notable as the first full-fledged feature film directed by another Illinois-born movie person, Vincente Minnelli. Also worth mentioning, the movie marked Lena Horne's first important appearance in a mainstream motion picture.§ A financial disappointment on the...

The Top Father's Day Films Ever Made? Here Are Five Dads - Ranging from the Intellectual to the Pathological
'Father of the Bride': Steve Martin and Kimberly Williams. Top Five Father's Day Movies? From giant Gregory Peck to tyrant John Gielgud What would be the Top Five Father's Day movies ever made? Well, there have been countless films about fathers and/or featuring fathers of various sizes, shapes, and inclinations. In terms of quality, these range from the amusing – e.g., the 1950 version of Cheaper by the Dozen; the Oscar-nominated The Grandfather – to the nauseating – e.g., the 1950 version of Father of the Bride; its atrocious sequel, Father's Little Dividend. Although I'm unable to come up with the absolute Top Five Father's Day Movies – or rather, just plain Father Movies – ever made, below are the first five (actually six, including a remake) "quality" patriarch-centered films that come to mind. Now, the fathers portrayed in these films aren't all heroic, loving, and/or saintly paternal figures. Several are...

Time Machine: Spielberg and Daughter (with 'Indiana Jones' Actress Capshaw) on Oscars Red Carpet
Steven Spielberg and daughter Destry Spielberg on the Oscars' Red Carpet Steven Spielberg and daughter Destry Steven Spielberg and daughter Destry Spielberg arrive at the 83rd Academy Awards, held on Feb. 27 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. Spielberg has taken home two Best Director Oscars: Schindler's List (1993) and Saving Private Ryan (1998). Schindler's List also won Best Picture, but Saving Private Ryan lost to John Madden's Miramax-distributed Shakespeare in Love. There was quite a bit of animosity at the time, as some felt that Miramax, owned by brothers Bob and Harvey Weinstein, overdid its Oscar campaigning – while still managing to sway enough Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences members to vote for its film. Somewhat ironically, at the 2011 Academy Awards ceremony Steven Spielberg presented the Best Picture Award to The King's Speech. Toplining Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter, Geoffrey Rush, Guy Pearce, and Claire Bloom, this British production was...

Mortdecai review
Johnny Depp channels Leslie Phillips in his latest outing, Mortdecai. But is he successful? Not really...

Your enjoyment of Mortdecai is likely going to be based on one thing: how much you can stand late period Johnny Depp. If you still find his faux-British sauntering thing endearing and enjoyable, you’ll probably have a good time. If however, like me, you’ve been growing tired of it since the second Pirates Of The Caribbean movie, you might find it a bit of a chore.

Based on author Kyril Bonfiglioli’s series of cult novels, Depp plays Charlie Mortdecai, an cartoonish upper crust art dealer-slash-conman, with a mansion in Oxford and staring bankruptcy down the barrel. When a rare Goya painting is stolen, old acquaintance and MI5 agent Alistair Martland (Ewan McGregor) throws Mortdecai a bone – retrieve the painting and he’ll clear his tax debt. What follows is a half Bond,...

The top 25 underappreciated films of 2006
Odd List Ryan Lambie Simon Brew 23 Jan 2014 - 05:44

Our series of lists devoted to underappreciated films brings us to the year 2006, and a further 25 overlooked gems...

With all the major films that elbow their way into their cinemas every year, there's bound to be some casualties among the big hits. And just like any other year, 2006 was dominated by the likes of Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, The Da Vinci Code and Ice Age: The Meltdown. But in tandem, there were dozens of lesser-seen films which shuffled in and out of cinemas (or occasionally, didn't get a release in cinemas at all) without very many people noticing.

As we're sure you're aware by now, these lists aim to redress the balance a little, and hopefully introduce a few films from any given year that you may have missed. There are also one or two films that, although...

Kent on Marilyn: 'a totally insignificant little blonde' off-screen
Jean Kent: ‘The Browning Version’ 1951, Gainsborough folds (photo: Jean Kent in ‘The Browning Version,’ with Michael Redgrave) (See previous post: “Jean Kent: Gainsborough Pictures Film Star Dead at 92.”) Seemingly stuck in Britain, Jean Kent’s other important leads of the period came out in 1948: John Paddy Carstairs’ Alfred Hitchcock-esque thriller Sleeping Car to Trieste (1948), with spies on board the Orient Express, and Gordon Parry’s ensemble piece Bond Street. Following two minor 1950 comedies, Her Favorite Husband / The Taming of Dorothy and The Reluctant Widow / The Inheritance, Kent’s movie stardom was virtually over, though she would still have one major film role in store. In what is probably her best remembered and most prestigious effort, Jean Kent played Millie Crocker-Harris, the unsympathetic, adulterous wife of unfulfilled teacher Michael Redgrave, in Anthony Asquith’s 1951 film version of Terence Rattigan’s The Browning Version — a Javelin Films production...

Queen given honorary BAFTA by Kenneth Branagh for supporting UK cinema
The Queen (2010)
The Queen was awarded an honorary BAFTA at a special ceremony at Windsor Castle yesterday (April 4).

Sir Kenneth Branagh presented the British monarch with her trophy, which is to recognise her support for the British film industry throughout her reign.

Christopher Nolan, Damian Lewis, George Lucas, James Nesbitt, Tom Hooper and Idris Elba were among the stars who attended the event.

John Hurt, Billy Connolly, Minnie Driver, Rebecca O'Brien, David Hare, Leslie Phillips, Edgar Wright and others were also in attendance.

BAFTA chairman John Willis paid tribute to the Queen, stating: "We should be proud of our industry. The people here this evening represent a vast variety of skills and ground breaking innovation; they have entertained and informed a generation and inspired generations to come."

Queen given Bafta award for lifetime support of British film
Sir Kenneth Branagh and George Lucas were among a stellar cast at Windsor Castle for a very royal award ceremony

Last night the Queen invited me and 299 of her closest friends to Windsor Castle for a special celebration of the British film industry – and to witness a unique and historic event. This occurred in front of a crowd of the movie world's most iconic names, including George Lucas, Christopher Nolan, Eric Fellner, David Hare, Tessa Ross, Rebecca O'Brien, Tom Hooper, Leslie Phillips, Idris Elba, Edgar Wright, Minnie Driver and many more. Her Majesty received a Bafta!

This was not for her work with Danny Boyle and Daniel Craig – it was more in the way of a lifetime achievement award, for supporting British film over the 50-year span of her reign.

Of course, many great performers do not care to receive these long-service gongs in the absence of a recognition of any specific performance.

Doctor Who: The Bells Of St John spoiler-free review
Review Simon Brew 18 Mar 2013 - 00:01

Doctor Who returns on Saturday the 30th of March with the devilishly entertaining The Bells of St John. Here's our spoiler-free review...

7.7 The Bells of St John

It's best that we quickly kick off with our usual but necessary explanation of what we mean by spoiler-free in our reviews. Feel free to jump a paragraph if you've read our spoiler-free stuff before.

Basically, this. We believe that spoiler-free reviews should be just that, and as such, we always veer on the side of caution. Shows such as Doctor Who are best enjoyed knowing as little about them before you watch an episode, and that's certainly the case again with The Bells Of St John. As such, we accept that we're telling you next to nothing about the story itself in the review that follows, but that is a deliberate choice on our part. We...

Bob Kellett obituary
Director of British comedy films in the tradition of saucy seaside postcards

During the 1970s, British cinema produced dozens of sex comedies, of which the director Bob Kellett, who has died aged 84, was something of a master. Kellett's films superseded the Carry On series, whose innuendo had become smuttier and less funny, and predated the more vulgar Confessions movies. They were in the tradition of Donald McGill's saucy seaside postcards, which George Orwell had extolled as being "symptomatically important as a sort of saturnalia, a harmless rebellion against virtue".

Kellett, who was born in Lancaster, went to Bedford school, where he was captain of the rowing team. After school, he had various jobs, including growing and selling orchids, selling encyclopedias, and writing for an advertising agency, before entering the film industry in the early 50s. After working on several features as script editor for the producer Ian Dalrymple at Pinewood Studios,...

James Bond Films: Ranking Best To Worst
007 needs no introduction. Whether he is a smug Scotsman, a mopey ozzie, a professional Leslie Phillips impersonator, a dimple-chinned welsh thespian, an Irishman who constantly looks like he wants to shag your mum, or a pouting blonde with sticky-out ears, Ian Fleming’s James Bond is without doubt the most enduring cinematic icon of the last 50 years, synonymous with beautiful women who have double-entendred names, exotic locales, deformed villains, witty puns, impossible gadgets, fast cars, guns and enough alcohol to finish off the combined livers of Indiana Jones, Batman and Sherlock Holmes.

Finally, Daniel Craig, who is in my opinion the best Bond so far, has returned in Skyfall- you’ll find out my opinion on the film later on. So Bond’s back, and Bond will return. With that in mind, I felt this was the perfect time to re-evaluate the franchise and rank each of the 23 films...

The disco legend passed away following a long battle with liver and colon cancer, and his funeral on Friday drew stars including lyricist Sir Tim Rice, singer Peter Andre and actor Leslie Phillips.

His wife Dwina was joined by his last remaining brother Barry, his elderly mother Barbara and their two sons at the moving service - and now she's revealed her pain at becoming a widow at 59.

Dwina tells The Sun she redecorated the couple's bedroom while Robin was in hospital ready for his return - and she's been left devastated about changing the decor now the star has passed away.

New Dimensions to Sci Fi London
Among the highlights of this year's festival is a period drama with a time-travel twist. Think Merchant Ivory, only steampunk

The annual Sci Fi London festival, which is running until Monday at several venues in the capital, always throws up more than its fair share of offbeat genre treats. One of this year's highlights is a period brainteaser with an intriguing time-travel twist that has already picked up awards from the Boston science fiction film festival and the London independent film festival. Dimensions: A Line, A Loop, A Tangle of Threads also benefits from a plucky backstory surrounding its husband-and-wife creative team. Director Sloane U'Ren and writer/composer Ant Neely sold their Twickenham home to help finance the tiny £180,000 budget, and most of the film is shot at the riverside Cambridgeshire home of Neely's brother.

Blending a Lewis Carroll fascination with the possibility of other worlds, timelines, realities and...

Phillips' 'Unusual' Christmas After Year Of Grief
Leslie Phillips
Veteran British actor Leslie Phillips is anticipating an "unusual" first Christmas without his wife Angela Scoular following her death earlier this year.

The 87 year old was left in mourning in April when the former Bond girl died after drinking a corrosive cleaning liquid at their London home.

Phillips is looking forward to life "getting better" in 2012 and admits his first festive season without Scoular will be a challenge.

He tells Britain's Ok! magazine, "I just like to be at home, but it might be an unusual Christmas this year. I wouldn't mind something wild.

"It's been a hard year for everybody. I am smelling the possibility of it getting better next year. In spring there will be lovely yellow daffodils, and yellow is my favourite colour. It's Shakespeare's colour - nice and bright and all about new things."...

In the words of Leslie Phillips... well heeellooo. A joy to have joined the Digital Spy team and I look forward to sharing with you my comings and goings in the world of celebrity and showbiz over the coming months. So, we gotta love the infamous telly 'autumn schedule', haven't we? All year the networks scrimp and save, competitive ratings pulling 'bums on seats', Saturday night shows are tweaked, and the customary high-profile sackings are manipulated to suck us all right in... also, come September we have an excuse to be antisocial and never venture out on a weekend for the rest of the year. Genius. They saw me coming! Ok, of course X Factor has not been without its issues this series... the eviction twists, judges freaking out after a Cowell conference call, contestants thinking they're flipping Mariah (get back in your box already!), Kelly (more)...
