What Does It Take to Make a CG Shark from Scratch?
Image
Film and TV production happens fast. Even a series as blown about by the waves as “Doctor Odyssey” needs to navigate between the Scylla of ocean exteriors and Charybdis of network procedural turnarounds. The visual effects team, led by VFX supervisor Jason Piccioni, has only about a week and a half per episode. So on the midseason two-parter, “Shark Attack,” they needed to be very strategic about when, how, and why we see the titular predators from the deep blue sea.

That specific challenge got the IndieWire Craft team thinking about how lean and mean you could get a VFX setup to create the shark that kamikaze-swims into the Odyssey’s propeller, the orcas that ram its hull, and the menacing fins that circle in the dark waters while our hero medics are (improbably) out in a support boat.

Piccioni told IndieWire that they worked with FuseFX for the show’s ambitious two-parter — indeed,...

Consider This Brunch: Some ‘Outer Range’ Creatives Didn’t Meet Until Today
Image
Remote production went to a whole new level during the pandemic, and “Outer Range” could serve as television’s Exhibit A. Several members of the show’s crafts team sat down with IndieWire’s Jim Hemphill to discuss the making of the visually complex series. The panel consisted of director Lawrence Trilling, production designer Tommaso Ortino, VFX supervisor Jason Piccioni, editor and producer Travis Baker, and composers Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans.

The thing is, some of them hadn’t met until today.

“Some of us are just meeting each other today or at the premiere,” Trilling said. “We missed the collegial warmth you can have while making a show.”

The television Western is currently having quite the renaissance thanks to “Yellowstone” and its massively popular prequel “1883,” but “Outer Range” has little more than setting in common with its fellow Westerns. In fact, it’s pretty safe to say...

IndieWire Consider This FYC Brunch Returns with ‘Yellowjackets,’ ‘Pachinko,’ ‘Outer Range,’ ‘The Staircase,’ and More
Image
IndieWire announces a return to in-person awards season festivities with a Consider This Brunch in Los Angeles on Thursday, May 12.

The event will feature panels on Showtime’s hit coming-of-age horror series “Yellowjackets,” Apple TV+’s multigenerational family drama “Pachinko,” Amazon Prime Video’s science-fiction neo-Western “Outer Range,” HBO Max’s true-crime-inspired mystery “The Staircase,” as well as a panel from Hulu to be announced soon. The brunch will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Pt in Hollywood.

Created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, “Yellowjackets” premiered last November to instant acclaim for its strong performances and addictive storytelling. The series centers on an all-girls high school soccer team who become stranded in the wilderness after a plane crash in 1996. Meanwhile, their present-day selves must reckon with their dark past.

Panelists for “Yellowjackets” include Co-Creator and Showrunner, Ashley Lyle, Co-Creator and Showrunner Bart Nickerson, Executive Producer and Showrunner Jonathan Lisco,...

Four New Behind-the-Scenes Videos from American Horror Story; A Few Hints Regarding Season Two
We couldn't have been happier with the turn of events in last night's season finale of "American Horror Story" on FX, but instead of rehashing what happened and spoiling it for anyone who may have DVR'd it and hasn't watched yet, we'll just share these four new behind-the-scenes videos provided by the network.

But before we get to that, how about some words from the show's creator Ryan Murphy about what fans can expect in Season Two? As he told EW, it will begin with a new locale and a (mostly) new cast. “Some of them will be coming back,” Murphy teased during a teleconference today. “I’m talking to several of them, and we’re in negotiations. There will be familiar faces, but there will also be new faces on the show.” Murphy hopes to announce the new storyline and cast in February.

Should some of the first season...

In 2003 Hollywood mega star Tom Cruise lived by the sword in The Last Samurai, the epic tale of an 1870s American cavalryman, haunted by the massacre of a Sioux tribe, who is transported to Japan where he gets some hard lessons in the samurai fighting style and comes to admire the Zen-derived code of a bucolic village. There he also falls in love with a broken Japanese woman. The film shot for four months in New Zealand.

Now, in 2010, Korean mega star Jang Dong Gun lives by the sword in The Warrior’s Way, the epic tale of an Asian swordsman, haunted by the fact that he massacred all his clan’s enemies—bar one: an infant child, which he takes and flees, taking refuge with an old friend living in Lode, a frontier town in the American Old West.
