Fantasia Film Fest Faces Strike Disruption Over Seasonal Worker Wages
Image
The Fantasia Film Festival is facing union strike action as the 24th edition of North America’s largest genre festival gets set to open on July 18 with a world premiere for Elijah Wood’s Bookworm and later an international premiere for The Count of Monte Cristo.

The Fantasia union, aligned with the Syndicat des employé-es de l’événementiel-csn, signed their first collective agreement in Sept. 2023, just after the film festival’s 2023 edition. But efforts to establish a minimum wage for around 60 unionized Fantasia employees have yet to reach agreement at the bargaining table.

So organizers with the Syndicat des employé-es de l’événementiel–Csn held a 24-hour strike on July 11 in front of the Fantasia headquarters on Maisonneuve West in Montreal, and additional pickets lines are threatened next week.

The three week genre fest is set to open with a world premiere for Bookworm, the Elijah Wood and Nell Fisher...

Elijah Wood’s ‘Bookworm’ to Open Fantasia Fest
Image
The 2024 Fantasia Film Festival will open with a world premiere for Bookworm, the Elijah Wood and Nell Fisher starrer from New Zealand filmmaker Ant Timpson.

The indie reteams Wood with Come to Daddy director Timpson and saw the Lord of the Rings actor return to New Zealand for production. In Bookworm, Fisher plays a 12-year-old girl whose life is turned upside down when her long-absent American magician father (Wood) comes to look after her, and together they take an ill-advised camping trip into the rugged New Zealand wilderness to find a mythological beast that leads to increasingly absurd and treacherous adventures.

Among other new titles added to the lineup for Fantasia’s 28th edition are world bows for Alexander J. Farrell’s The Beast Within, starring Kit Harrington; Isaac Ezban’s dystopian coming-of-age tale Parvulos; and Vivieno Caldinelli’s Scared Shitless, starring Steven Ogg and Daniel Doheny.

‘Sharper’ (2023). On Apple TV+. Movie Review
Image
Sharper is a thriller movie directed by Benjamin Caron with Julianne Moore, Sebastian Stan, Justice Smith, Briana Middleton and John Lithgow.

An elegant and very classic thriller you can enjoy this Friday on Apple TV+.

This movie knows how to balance a slow technique, brilliant actors and classic plot which is totally familiar.

Movie Review

A paused rhythm for this movie about tricksters that is totally predictable and yet manages to fool us from its direct title and its “film noir” look, studied and elegant: it does not bring us anything new and does not promise to do so either, but the entire setting, the characters and its giddy calm rhythm knows how to work with precision to do the exact thing it needs to do at each moment, without getting lost or trying to invent something new.

Needless to say that this movie would not be anything if Julianne...

‘Uncoupled’ Review: Neil Patrick Harris Takes Manhattan in Netflix’s Fizzy New Rom-Com
Kim Cattrall, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, and Cynthia Nixon in Sex and the City (1998)
Let’s get the “Sex and the City” comparisons out of the way quickly, shall we? Co-created by “Satc” mastermind Darren Star and Jeffrey Richman (“Modern Family”), “Uncoupled” — the new eight-episode Netflix series headlined by the immensely appealing Neil Patrick Harris, returning to sitcoms nearly a decade after nine seasons as the suit-wearing, womanizing Barney Stinson on “How I Met Your Mother” — centers on the romantic escapades of the emotionally messy but impeccably dressed Michael (Harris) and his trio of closest friends. That includes single mother and straight talker Suzanne (sitcom vet Tisha Campbell), Michael’s partner in the multimillion-dollar Manhattan residential real estate biz; the sex-obsessed Billy (Emerson Brooks), a TV weatherman who never met a younger man he didn’t like; and self-deprecating art dealer Stanley, who’s so highbrow he sends a naked pen-and-ink sketch to potential hookups. Shades of Carrie, Miranda, Samantha, and Charlotte, yes? And just like “Satc,...

‘Halston’ Emmy interviews: Watch our 7 in-depth chats with Krysta Rodriguez, Rebecca Dayan and more
Image
The limited series “Halston” premiered on May 14 of this year, but the period drama about the fashion icon of the same name was more than two decades in the making. Series director Daniel Minahan first read a biography of the famed designer in 1996 and felt that it needed a film treatment. After multiple failed attempts to bring the project to fruition, he teamed with Killer Films co-founder Christine Vachon and superstar producer Ryan Murphy and the series found a home on Netflix.

“Halston” stars Ewan McGregor in the title role. The Iowa- born Halston first came to prominence designing high-end hats for women. After one of his hats is worn by Jackie Kennedy, Halston becomes a giant in the fashion industry, creating everything from designer gowns, to luggage and even perfume. The series is set against the backdrop of the New York party scene of the 1970s, replete with cocaine-fueled...

How Krysta Rodriguez Learned to ‘Pump Up the Liza’ for ‘Halston’
Krysta Rodriguez
This story about Krysta Rodriguez and “Halston” first appeared in the Limited Series & TV Movies issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.

The role of the best friend can be a thankless and colorless one, but not if the best friend is Liza Minnelli. That’s the part that theater and TV actress Krysta Rodriguez plays in the Netflix limited series “Halston,” which stars Ewan McGregor as the iconic fashion designer and features Rodriguez as the diva who became his lifelong friend and confidante through success, drug addiction and rehab, up to his death in 1990 from AIDS-related cancer.

Playing Liza from her days in small nightclubs through her Oscar-winning performance in “Cabaret” and her party-girl phase during the heyday of New York’s Studio 54 disco, Rodriguez nails all the Liza mannerisms — the flutter, the laugh, the open-palmed gestures — but also has the musical-theater chops to handle material like “Say Liza,” the...

Ewan McGregor and Gian Franco Rodriguez in Halston (2021)
‘Halston': Did A Woman Really Die in the Studio 54 Vents?
Ewan McGregor and Gian Franco Rodriguez in Halston (2021)
(Some light spoilers ahead for the fourth episode of the Netflix series “Halston”)

The life of Roy Halston Frowick, better known simply as Halston, was not boring. That simply is not a word you could accurately throw around about anybody who was super rich and frequented Studio 54 during its brief reign of glory in New York in the late 1970s.

As we see in numerous scenes on “Halston” — as well, of course, from the many, many stories that folks have shared about it over the past four decades — that place was crazy. An absolute madhouse of debauchery. And certainly too chaotic to last.

Halston himself (Ewan McGregor) was a well known Studio 54 attendee in real life, partying there as often as he could, and the show reflects that — he, Victor Hugo (Gian Franco Rodriguez), Liza Minnelli (Krysta Rodriguez), Elsa Peretti (Rebecca Dayan) and Joe Eula (David Pittu) go there all the time,...

Image
The rise to the top can be filled with fame and excess, but once you best the rest, there’s only one direction to go from there.

In Ryan Murphy’s latest limited series Halston, Ewan McGregor (Fargo) portrays Roy Halston Frowick, a designer who took the fashion world by storm with his transcendent vision and Jackie Kennedy-approved headwear. Throughout the five-episode series (now available on Netflix), Murphy and McGregor track the icon’s rise and turbulent fall as Halston builds his world-renowned empire only to get consumed by the drugs, success and egotism that comes with it.

Halston Family Calls Netflix’s Upcoming Series ‘Inaccurate’ and ‘Fictionalized’
Image
The family of late fashion designer Roy Halston Frowick, professionally known as Halston, has issued a statement against Netflix’s upcoming series based on his life, calling it “inaccurate” and “fictionalized.”

“The Halston Archives and Family were not consulted on the upcoming Netflix series involving an inaccurate, fictionalized account of famed fashion designer, ‘Halston,'” the family said in a statement to the Associated Press. “The Halston Archives remains the only definitive and comprehensive source on the man and his legacy as the personally appointed custodian of his private papers and effects.”

Lesley Frowick, director of the Halston Archives and Halston’s niece, told Variety that the family was “never contacted” about the series, and were “collectively disappointed” by its production.

“I would like to let you know that in no way was the Halston family ever contacted about this production,” Frowick wrote in a statement to Variety. “Halston’s...

‘Girl From The North Country’ Review: Bob Dylan Songs Haunt Remarkable Off Broadway Musical
Bob Dylan
Mining Bob Dylan’s unrivaled songbook – even if he’d never written a tune beyond the 20 or so included in Off Broadway’s Girl From The North Country, his contribution to popular music would be assured – and wandering his spiritual map of a mythic Americana that conforms to no historical boundaries but feels undeniably true to the bone, Conor McPherson’s radiant musical is as eccentric and unclassifiable as any fellow traveler of Dylan should be.

A remarkable piece of theater that made its London premiere last year, Girl opens tonight at the Public Theater with an impeccable cast including Mare Winningham and Stephen Bogardus. At times so lovely – as when a pair of young, broken-up lovers duet on a newly mournful version of the once sprightly I Want You – Girl might have you wishing for some sort of theatrical replay mechanism.

Written and directed by Conor McPherson, Girl From the North Country, which includes such classic Dylan songs as “Like a Rolling Stone,” “I Want You,” “Slow Train,” “Forever Young,” “Idiot Wind” and the title number, begins previews at The Public’s Newman Theater on Tuesday, September 11, with an official opening on Monday, October 1 and runs through Sunday, November 4.
