El 28 Festival de Málaga, que se celebra del del 14 al 23 de marzo, concederá al intérprete argentino Guillermo Francella el Premio Retrospectiva, que reconoce su impresionante y amplia trayectoria en el cine hispanohablante.

Francella se suma así a una lista de ilustres galardonados con el Premio Retrospectiva, en la que figuran nombres como el cineasta argentino Marcelo Piñeyro, el director español Alberto Rodríguez o la actriz argentina Mercedes Morán.

El premio lo otorga la organización junto a Málaga Hoy, que ha entrevistado al actor, que ha expresado su emoción: «Esta distinción que me otorgó el Festival de Málaga de homenajearme con una retrospectiva de mi vida, de mi carrera, me hace muy feliz, y más de poder estar ahí. Brazilian Haroldo Borges’ exploration of thorny adolescence in Bittersweet Rain took the best film award at the 37th Mar del Plata International Film Festival (Mdpiff) which wrapped Saturday.

Also a winner of industry prizes at Guadalajara and Ventana Sur and Málaga’s work-in-progress sections, Bittersweet Rain follows fatherless 15-year-old Bruno from a small town as he faces a degenerative eye disease.

Moreover, the drama claimed the audience award and received a special mention for the entire cast. Shot with non-professional actors, it is Borges’ first solo directorial outing after Son Of Ox and Noches desveladas.

Glenn Close no longer will preside over the San Sebastian jury and has canceled her trip to the festival due to a family emergency.

“I deeply regret that I will not be able to take part in the Festival as there has been a family emergency for which I must stay home,” Close said in a statement. “I apologize to the Festival, the Jury, the filmmakers, the Donostia honorees, and the festival audience, that I will not be there to celebrate with you all.”

Argentinian producer Matías Mosteirín, who already was announced as part of the jury, will serve as the president. Mosteirin’s feature film as a producer, Bolivia, received the Young Critics Award at the Semaine de la Critique in Cannes. He recently executive produced Marcelo Piñeyro’s series El Reino (The Realm) for Netflix.

Mempo Giardinelli's “Sultry Moon” is apparently quite the read but what caught my attention was this steamy trailer for Vicente Aranda's adaptation of the story which also happens to be titled Luna Caliente (“Sultry Moon”). The film stars Eduard Fernández as Ramiro, a man returning to his small Argentine town to start his career as a law professor, and the gorgeous Thaïs Blume as the young woman who becomes his victim. Ramiro's entire life changes within the span of a few hours when the moon is full and he becomes a rapist, murderer and fugitive.

When Nobel Prize winning author José Saramago says that a book is “written in a language perfectly pitched for the subject matter, a ruthless dissection of a fast decaying society,” I can't help but do a double take. Not simply because Saramago is a prize winning author but because he himself is a master of the ruthless dissections of our quickly decaying society. The novel which received such high praise is Claudia Piñeiro's “Thursday Night Widows,” a book that is now getting a little attention on the big screen.

MADRID -- Spanish production house Alquimia said Monday that it will launch into English-language production with a drama to be directed by Argentina's Marcelo Pineyro. Alquimia president and CEO Francisco Ramos said in an interview that he has decided to step beyond being a minority co-producer on English-language productions, a position he took on films such as Matthew Parkhill's Dot the I and Franco Zeffirelli's Callas Forever. The film, working under the title La Mitad (One Half), tells of a couple that rediscovers love while traveling through Morocco and in the face of illness.
