Sure, “How to Train Your Dragon,” in theaters now, is a live-action adaptation of a beloved animated original, the latest in a whole host of features that try to recapture the magic of a classic, only this time in a different medium. But it’s by far the greatest live-action adaptation of a beloved animated original yet – something that doesn’t, as critic Bilge Ebiri said in his review for New York Magazine, “feel totally pointless.”
DreamWorks Animation’s original “How to Train Your Dragon” was an Oscar-nominated 2010 hit, based on a series of books by British author Cressida Cowell, and concerned the Viking nation of Berk, which is constantly at war with dragons. A young man named Hiccup (Mason Thames in the new movie), desperate for his father’s approval, attempts to take down a dragon (who he eventually names Toothless), but ends up befriending it. Less than a month after the release of the live-action adaptation of Lilo & Stitch, Disney has released yet another “real-world” version of a beloved animated product. This time out, the 2010 release How to Train Your Dragon is appropriated as a non-animated epic. Surprisingly, the fun continues and the new version proves to be every bit and entertaining as its predecessor.
The film tells the tale of young Hiccup (played by Mason Thames), who lives on the isle of Berk, where his father Chief Stoick the Vast oversees a Viking village that is plagued by raids from a variety of dragons, including a dreaded “Night Fury” dragon. During the latest attack on the village, the Night Fury is injured and Hiccup befriends the creature, naming him Toothless.
As the bond between Hiccup and Toothless grows, their unlikely pairing leads to the reevaluation of traditional Viking attitudes towards their longtime nemeses as...

2010’s animated How To Train Your Dragon boasts a fun, sparky script and an unimprovable story about a lonely, damaged boy bonding with a lonely, injured dragon. This remake has, therefore, largely decided not to improve it, playing out a near-identical script with live human actors and calling it a day. It’s the Gus Van Sant’s Psycho of animation remakes. It is frequently soaring and gorgeous, but can’t take full credit for its beautiful moments because we’ve quite literally seen it before.
How to judge a remix, an echo? Maybe returning director Dean DeBlois, returning composer John Powell and returning star Gerard Butler have fixed some tiny details that always bugged them or added something in that they missed first time, but it’s not always evident what. This adds some tiny wrinkles — a little more backstory for Nico Parker’s star dragon-slayer-in-training Astrid; the idea...

It doesn’t seem like 15 years since the original “How to Train Your Dragon” animated feature earned raves for its heart and remarkable visuals, a 99% Rotten Tomatoes rating, Oscar nominations and nearly $500 million at the box office. And that’s one of the problems with a live-action version coming out so soon – the third feature in the animated series was only six years ago. Comparisons are impossible to avoid, forcing us to wonder what is gained and what is lost in the move to live action. The answer, sadly, is the balance tips into the red.
The story, characters and plot movement are almost identical to the 2010 film: On the island of Berk, hardy Viking-like people engage in regular battles with dragons as they eke out their existence. Robust chieftain Stoick is a fearless fighter, but his teen son, Hiccup (Mason Thames) is a sensitive soul more interested in learning and inventing.

Studios used to wait an average of thirty to forty years before remaking beloved intellectual properties. Now, with How to Train Your Dragon—an animated film that debuted in 2010—it seems the window has shrunk to fifteen or twenty years, at most. Films barely have time to reach classic status before a remake draft is already greenlit.
That said, How to Train Your Dragon is being remade as a live-action adaptation, which TNT would call a “new” animated classic, a strategic move. Studios and theaters are desperate for a hit, and family films rarely fall flat. While this version may not be as strong as the original, it retains what family audiences connect with most.
A heartwarming story about fathers, sons, and finding one’s place in the world.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone have said that they’d rather die along with their entire families than make another puppet movie like Team America: World Police. But, as Bruce Campbell knows well, the dead aren’t always free from puppetry.
In 2004, the creators of South Park released their feature-length satire of American politics and over-the-top action movies performed entirely by a massive cast of custom-made marionettes. Team America: World Police won no awards, broke no box office records and, thankfully for Parker and Stone, spawned no sequels, but the hilarious, unique and preposterously profane action-comedy-musical quickly became a cult-classic — and, not to mention, it contains some of the finest, catchiest and filthiest show tunes that Parker and Stone ever performed.
Team America: World Police also happened to be the single most grueling and labor-intensive feature film that any of the many esteemed and experienced artists involved in its hellish production ever experienced.

I don’t remember a great deal about Y2K. I was a wee lad at the time, and I was too busy running our copy of The Mummy through the Vcr a hundred times to worry much. I’m not even sure we had a computer at the time. It’s my understanding that preemptive action mitigated most of the more serious concerns, and Y2K, otherwise known as the year 2000 problem, is nothing but a faint cultural memory.
Not so faint for SNL alum Kyle Mooney, however. Partnering with A24, they released Y2K at the end of last year. The horror/comedy hybrid reimagines Y2K as an apocalyptic event wherein all the world’s technology gains sentience and turns against humanity. Think Ghost in the Machine (a classic) on a much larger scale. While critical reviews and box office receipts were iffy, Y2K is killing it on streaming,...

Bringing snark and condescending line deliveries to every role, Ryan Reynolds is a love-him-or-hate-him kind of actor. He made his Hollywood debut in 1995 in a teen TV series called Fifteen. Since then, he has made a name for himself in comedy, horror, and most notably, as the "Merc with a Mouth" Wade Wilson, better known as Deadpool. Among critics and audiences, Deadpool and its sequel are considered some of the best superhero movies of the 21st century.
Ryan Reynolds almost single-handedly made the character of Deadpool a reality. Of course, it's not all love for Reynolds. With reviews of Deadpool & Wolverine being fairly mixed, it's a good time to go into the Ryan Reynolds archive to see which of his films is actually rated the lowest. Some of the films are entertaining gems that critics got wrong. Others are tough to watch, even for hardcore fans of the Canadian actor.

Universal dropped the first trailer for the DreamWorks “How to Train Your Dragon” live-action remake on February 12, following the high-flying teaser seen during the Super Bowl. IndieWire got a sneak peek of the trailer (boasting some familiar moments from the animated original) and three scenes at a recent Universal presentation at the studio with director Dean DeBlois.
The live-action remake revisits the Viking dragon slayers on the island of Berk, led by Chief Stoic (reprised by Gerard Butler). The new film concerns the secret friendship between Stoic’s son, Hiccup (Mason Thames), and Toothless, the rare Night Fury dragon. The focus of the trailer and footage was on big-screen spectacle.
In the first scene, Hiccup awkwardly struggles during dragon training, while the badass Astrid (Nico Parker) excels with more talent and confidence. In the second scene, Hiccup disastrously attempts to tame a wild dragon during his test of courage in the arena,...

Dean DeBlois is getting ready to show off footage from his live-action adaptation of “How to Train Your Dragon.” But he wants to explain some things first.
The filmmaker — an animation legend who made “Lilo & Stitch” and the original “How to Train Your Dragon” with Chris Sanders and directed two more “How to Train Your Dragon” installments for DreamWorks Animation on his own — had flirted with live-action filmmaking before. He had sold a number of spec scripts, including “Sightings,” which would have beaten “Stranger Things” to the Spielbergian punch by a good decade. But none of those materialized. Now, with “How to Train Your Dragon” (2025), he finally has his shot.
“I myself am not a huge fan of the animation-to-live-action trend,” DeBlois admitted to TheWrap from an edit bay on the Universal Studios lot. “Universal wanted to revisit this story. It’s like, ‘We’re going to do it. Let...

Quick Links So Many Stars, so Little Depth in Kevin Costner's 'Criminal' 'Criminal' Put Up no Fight at the Box Office
Back in 2016, Kevin Costner and Ryan Reynolds starred in an action film that was a box office bomb. The film, Criminal, had all the makings of a decent sci-fi thriller but turned out to be a financial and critical disappointment. With a solid cast and an interesting enough concept, Criminal could have been so much better.
Criminal stars Kevin Costner as Jerico Stewart. A convict and sociopath, Jerico is unexpectedly recruited by the CIA to take part in a scientific treatment where memories of a fallen agent are implanted in his brain. The agent, Bill Pope (played by Ryan Reynolds), is the key to finding the location of a hacker who has developed a program that would allow him to hijack the world’s nuclear defense codes.

At the end of 1999 humanity faced the first major crisis of the computer era, the Y2K Bug. For those lucky enough to be too young to remember, it was feared the fact most programs hard coded the “19” and only stored the last two digits of a year in memory would cause them to think the year 2000 was actually 1900 and plunge the world into chaos.
While there were some problems, it ended up being considerably less than the end of the world as we know it. The biggest problem I had to deal with was my copy of WWE 2K20 crashing until I could download and installed a patch. What’s the secret to Bound‘s steamy, same-sex love scenes? Tequila and truffles, it turns out.
Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly joined The Hollywood Reporter’s It Happened in Hollywood podcast for an episode about the making of the 1996 noir — the pulpy, lesbian thriller that served as a debut for Lilly and Lana Wachowski, three years before The Matrix made the director siblings household names.
Its frank depictions of gay sex were considered risky at the time. “Gina knew right away that she wanted to do it,” says Tilly, who plays Violet, girlfriend to a mobster (Joey Pantoliano) who falls for Gershon’s Corky, an ex-con. “But I was trepidatious. The script was one of the best scripts you ever read. But then you think two first-time directors, Dino De Laurentiis as the producer — we could easily get into a Roger Corman sort of arena. I was a little bit nervous.

Bound is a fresh take on film noir with a feminist twist, redefining genre cliches. Unlike many noir films, Bound highlights queer women without catering to the male gaze, promoting sex-positivity. Bound challenges traditional masculinity, serving as a deconstruction of patriarchal values in film noir.
Few filmmakers have had a career more interesting than Lilly and Lana Wachowski. Heavily inspired by Eastern cinema and adult animation, this creative team is known for their idiosyncratic output. The duo put themselves on the map with The Matrix, an auteurist masterpiece that redefined the sci-fi genre. Blending cyberpunk dystopia alongside anime influences, the film became a cultural touchstone thanks to its stylized action and philosophical ideas. The Wachowskis are bold visionaries, with their subsequent films finding cult success in recent years. Queer cinephiles tend to especially resonate with how these directors explore themes of identity and gender roles. However, few tend to discuss The Watchowskis' directorial debut,...

Lana and Lilly Wachowski’s Bound, their low-budget neo-noir debut feature from 1996, is both an outlier in a filmography subsequently defined by high-concept science fiction and an ur-text for the filmmakers’ overriding interest in the power of erotic and romantic love to liberate people.
The film concerns a plot by Violet (Jennifer Tilly), the moll of a mafia money launderer named Caesar (Joe Pantoliano), to run out on her man with enough of his filthy lucre to set herself up for life. To do so, she woos Corky (Gina Gershon), her apartment complex’s handywoman and an ex-con, to act as her accomplice. But rather than simply use the woman as a patsy, Violet betrays more and more genuine interest in Corky, and the two grow ever closer as Caesar starts to piece together their scheme and things go increasingly awry.

This post contains spoilers for "Unfrosted."
As you might expect from its subject matter, Jerry Seinfeld's "Unfrosted," a film about the creation of the Pop-Tart, is an extremely silly comedy. It's also (very loosely) based on the real-world rivalry between Kellogg's and Post, and since the film chronicles the creation of a new product from a major company in the 1960s, the movie also contains a scene in which Don Draper and Roger Sterling from AMC's "Mad Men" drop by to pitch an advertising campaign for what would eventually be named the Pop-Tart. Yes, after dropping the mic in one of the most famous series finales of this century when "Mad Men" ended in 2015, actors Jon Hamm and John Slattery returned to reprise their most memorable roles in a goofy Netflix comedy.

In an eagerly awaited move, Netflix is set to premiere a new comedy that takes audiences back to a pivotal moment in breakfast history. Titled “Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story,” the film marks Jerry Seinfeld’s first foray into movie directing, promising to blend his iconic humor with a slice of 1960s Americana.
Scheduled for release on May 3, 2024, “Unfrosted” is inspired by the real-life corporate rivalry between breakfast giants Kellogg’s and Post. Set against the backdrop of 1963 Michigan, the story unfolds as both companies ambitiously vie to invent a game-changing breakfast pastry, igniting a tale filled with ambition, betrayal, and a sprinkling of sugary satire.

Seinfeld, best known for his eponymous TV sitcom “Seinfeld,” not only directs but has also co-written the screenplay alongside collaborators Spike Feresten, Barry Marder, and Andy Robin. This creative team, having previously contributed to some of “Seinfeld’s” most memorable episodes, brings their sharp wit and...

“What if the Y2K bug was real” feels like such an obvious concept that it’s surprising that it took so long to come up with it. At its best, the teen horror comedy Y2K will make you feel glad that Kyle Mooney and Evan Winter were the first to the punch. Displaying the shaggy looseness of sketch comedy, the film regards its setting with an irony-free attention to detail as it keys itself to the vibes of people who came of age before the new millennium started and would give anything to live it over again, with or without killer robots.
It’s New Year’s Eve 1999, and shy teenage nerd Eli (Jaeden Martell) is more worried about making an impression on his cool-girl crush, Laura (Rachel Zegler), than he is about the approaching millennium and what it might bring. After hitting up the video store with his gregarious best bud,...

Nico Parker discusses how the live-action How to Train Your Dragon remake will have its own identity while still capturing the magic of the original. The remake has the potential to be even more epic than the original trilogy, with the director's original vision being realized on a live-action canvas. The success of the film could lead to live-action adaptations of the second and third films, giving audiences a brand-new vision of the How to Train Your Dragon world.
How to Train Your Dragon live-action star Nico Parker discusses how the remake of the 2010 movie will be faithful to the original. Starring Mason Thames as Hiccup and Parker as Astrid, the live-action remake will be written and directed by Dean DeBlois, the same filmmaker who brought the 2010 original to life. Beyond DeBlois returning as director, Gerard Butler will also be reprising his role, from live-action to animation, as Stoick the Vast,...

Heavy spoilers for "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" to follow.
Doing adaptations of work that have already been adapted into a beloved piece of media is a near-impossible task. How do you stand apart from the version audiences are so familiar with without trying to compete or tamper with that version? How do you do things differently without being unrecognizable? How do you do things similar enough without feeling like a copy?
The best new adaptations are those that reinvent the original material, those that look at what the more popular adaptation skipped or didn't do, and take the chance to explore different aspects of the source material. It's how the "Watchmen" TV show managed to be both a remake, a prequel, and a sequel to the iconic comic. Or how the live-action "One Piece" managed to tell things the anime didn't get to.

“No One Will Save You,” the tale of a young woman (Kaitlyn Dever) battling extraterrestrial foes, just premiered on Hulu. In many ways it’s the ultimate scary alien invasion movie, throwing in menacing extraterrestrial intruders, abductions, ominously hovering UFOs and even a creepy “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” motif with gooey creatures nestled in your throat. It’s very scary and very good – so good, in fact, that you’ll probably have a hankering for more creepy stories of alien visitation.
To that end, here are five more scary-as-hell alien movies to watch after you finish “No One Will Save You” – and where you can watch them right now.

Like sands through the hourglass, so too pass titles from the catalog of streaming services. Netflix, according to the handy resource website JustWatch, has only 3,600 movies at any given moment, and about 1,800 TV shows. That is, of course, plenty of entertainment and could keep a single person occupied for the better part of two years, but is frustrating when compared to what the average video store had back in the day. For instance, CineFile Video, a store still operating out of Los Angeles, has about 45,000 titles in its library. That's about 8.3 Netflixes worth of movies.
As such, one has to be nimble when finding films to watch on Netflix. Throughout the month of June 2023, some exciting and notable films and TV shows will be taken off the service in order to make room for new shows and movies. However frustrating it may be to have one's home video store possess an ephemeral catalog,...

With “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” playing out its second weekend in global theatrical release, much of the chatter around the film has focused on its baddie, one of the seemingly countless variants of Jonathan Majors’ Kang. The Marvel marketing machine is pitching the would-be conqueror as the next Thanos-level threat, with appearances in this third “Ant-Man” and the first season finale of “Loki” before getting his name in the title in the summer 2025 release “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.”
For a look at what makes Jonathan Majors’ Kang a different kind of threat, and a different kind of character from Josh Brolin’s universe-killing Thanos, TheWrap spoke with Jeff Loveness, the screenwriter behind both the recent “Ant-Man” threequel and the upcoming “Avengers” team-up flick.
Loveness spoke about Kang, what he does or doesn’t know about future Kang-centric adventures and why he used the opportunity to give Michelle Pfeiffer an MCU spotlight.

"Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania" may not be a critical darling, but writer Jeff Loveness is riding a wave of ecstasy after writing the Marvel Studios sequel that really let him take the Marvel Cinematic Universe into some of the strangest sci-fi territory the multi-billion dollar franchise has ever seen. With roots that began at "Jimmy Kimmel Live" and eventually took him to the writing staff of "Rick and Morty," Loveness is a comedy writer at heart, but he relished the opportunity to write a classic and tragic character like Kang the Conqueror, with actor Jonathan Majors taking the out-of-time villain's dialogue to the next level.
Following the release of "Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania," /Film got the chance to speak with Jeff Loveness about writing the sequel that kicks off Phase 5 of the MCU. Funnily enough, Loveness says he wasn't concerned with setting up the future of the MCU,...

The thing about the Wachowskis' "The Matrix" is that you could throw a dart at any of a half-dozen different action sequences and land on one that's more than worthy of this column. The opening moments showcasing the first-ever instance of bullet time practically rewrote the rules for the entire action genre at the time. The set piece beginning with the "deja vu" moment and ending on Morpheus' (Laurence Fishburne) self-sacrificial capture rightfully owns a sizable piece of pop culture real estate all these years later. And the final act of the film unveils one all-timer action scene after another, from the lobby shootout to the rooftop rescue to Keanu Reeves' Neo taking on Agent Smith...

For a new Super Bowl ad for cash-back shopping platform Rakuten, Alicia Silverstone slipped into a yellow tartan skirt to reprise her star-making turn in Amy Heckerling’s iconic 1995 comedy Clueless. But when it comes to the big game, it turns out Silverstone is just as adorably oblivious as Cher Horowitz.
“I don’t know if I’ve ever watched the Super Bowl in my life,” the actress tells THR by phone from Amsterdam, where she’s shooting a movie. “If I didn’t have this commercial for Rakuten, I wouldn’t know when the Super Bowl was.”
No doubt countless Clueless fans are glad she got that sorted out so they can see her opposite Elisa Donovan’s Amber in the well-known (and much quoted) debate scene. “It was nothing short of surreal,” Donovan told THR of getting the gang back together for the spot that was developed by Rakuten’s in-house marketing team,...

There was one thing that the actors weren't allowed to do on set of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, according to star actor Anna Kendrick. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World revolved around a musician trying to fend off the evil ex-boyfriends of his girlfriend. Based on Bryan Lee O'Malley's comics of the same name, the arcade-inspired film sees Scott facing off everyone from a super-powered vegan to a self-centered Hollywood actor.
Yet circumstances were even stranger on set of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, as Anna Kendrick explained in an interview with Vanity Fair.
While Scott Pilgrim vs. The World director Edgar Wright has reunited with Michael Cera, it seems understandable if Cera refused to blink throughout the entire interaction, as Kendrick explained that Wright wouldn't allow the actors to blink while filming. Check out Kendrick's quote below:

There is no one correct way to direct a movie. Most filmmakers nowadays shoot loads of coverage -- i.e. all of the footage necessary to effectively cut the movie together in post-production. This approach gives directors a variety of options in the edit to shape each scene to their liking. Other filmmakers know precisely what they want each day they show up on set, and shoot only what they need to piece together the scene as they've imagined it (typically via storyboard).
Edgar Wright falls fairly solidly into the latter category. He's a master stylist who frames and cuts with purpose. His editing rhythms are uniquely, invigoratingly musical; from the Queen-scored set piece at the Winchester in "Shaun of the Dead" to the percussive "Tequila" gunfight in "Baby Driver," he has most of the movie mapped out in his mind. He's not fanatically anti-coverage like one of his filmmaking heroes,...

Before truly hitting it big with the "Spider-Man" trilogy, Sam Raimi took his first shot at comic book films with "Darkman." An original and gritty take on classic superhero tropes, it's largely considered one of the director's most underrated films, as well as a precursor to the darker superhero films of the 2010s. However, what makes "Darkman" unique from, say, the work of Zack Snyder, is that it also had that campy and distinctly Raimi style embedded throughout. If you're familiar with the director's work in pretty much any capacity, you'll know that his visual style and how his scenes are shot are part of the movie-watching experience he wants you to have.
Unfortunately, that style doesn't always jive with big studios. One case in point was, believe it or not, "Darkman." In an oral history published by The Hollywood Reporter, cinematographer Bill Pope said that he was hired because...

Director Lana Wachowski and her crew were 17 days into the shoot on “The Matrix Resurrections” when they had to shut down due to the pandemic; when they resumed production several months later, frequent Wachowski cinematographer John Toll opted not to return due to health issues in his family. Toll’s departure created an opportunity for camera operator Daniele Massaccesi, who stepped into the director of photography role — his first on a big-budget studio production — and helped create a new visual grammar for one of the most famous franchises in film history.
“Resurrections,” the fourth “Matrix” movie and the first in almost 20 years, represents the latest step in Wachowski’s evolution toward a more improvisational approach to filmmaking, an evolution in which Massaccesi played a key role. “I did a few days on ‘Speed Racer,’ and then ‘Cloud Atlas,’ which was probably the first time Lana and Lilly [Wachowski] shot on location,...

“Venom: Let There Be Carnage,” Sony’s first Marvel property to be released since the pandemic, starts with previews Thursday evening. It is expected, at a minimum, to be the sixth domestic opener this year over $40 million, with expectations that $50 million or higher is possible.
The “Venom” sequel launches a critical month for box office recovery ahead of “No Time to Die” (United Artists/October 8), “Dune” (Warner Bros./October 22) and other entries that are key tests of whether sustained improvement has taken hold. Each film’s individual returns will have its own specific measures for success.
What sets “Carnage” apart is that it is a rare case this year of a possible apples-to-apples comparison. The first “Venom” opened in 2018 on exactly the same weekend (to a then-October record $80 million). Comparisons to previous Marvel sequels also provide guidance for measuring the results.

The latest offering from Marvel Studios is Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings. Despite the oppressiveness of the title, this film is one of the breeziest and remarkably entertaining martial-arts laden superhero films you may ever have the pleasure of seeing (and actually enjoying).
The story follows its title character, Shang-Chi (Simu Liu), as he confronts the demons of his past after he is forced to reenter the dark underbelly of the Ten Rings organization. Shang-Chi is joined in his adventures by his longtime friend, Katy (Awkwafina), who manages to play her character quite well off of, and without being overshadowed by, the considerable martial arts skills of the lead actor.
Simply put, there is a lot going on in this film and it is quite difficult to absorb it all in one viewing. But, somehow, director Destin Daniel Cretton – along with fellow co-writers, David Callaham and Andrew Lanham...

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is one of the fresh faces joining “The Matrix” in Lana Wachowski’s upcoming fourth entry, and he told The Hollywood Reporter he was starstruck on set when Keanu Reeves arrived for their first scene together. Reeves is reprising his iconic role of Neo in “The Matrix 4,” while original star Carrie-Anne Moss is also back as Trinity. Both characters appeared to die at the end of “The Matrix Revolutions,” so their resurrections for “The Matrix 4″ will most likely drive the plot. No specifics on the storyline have been revealed, nor Emmy winner Abdul-Mateen II’s role in the motion picture.
“I remember Keanu and his first line,” the actor told THR. “I looked up, and there was Keanu, and I said, ‘Oh shit, I’m really in “The Matrix,”‘ It was just Keanu in that voice. And the technology that Lana incorporated and the filmmaking, camera...

It’s not what you’re used to seeing in a Marvel Studios release: bright neon light casting Simu Liu and his on screen opponent in neon silhouette; a dazzling array of forested trees acting as both venue and enraptured audience for a fight scene in the woods; just even an occasional emphasis on shadows, period. Yet all these things and more are visible in the new Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings trailer.
Could this be a signal that the Phase 4 era of the MCU will be a more visually dynamic one? We can hope.
The new film, which opens in September as Marvel’s first post-Black Widow release—and the first film made by Disney set after the events of 2019’s gargantuan Avengers: Endgame—is a bit of a fresh start for Marvel. In addition to not being a sequel or a prequel to an already established character,...

Jessica Henwick is no stranger to witnessing big budget productions thanks to her roles as Nymeria Sand on “Game of Thrones,” X-Wing pilot Jess Pava in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” and Colleen Wing in a trio of Netflix-Marvel comic book series, but the making of “The Matrix 4” seems to be blowing the actress’ mind like never before. Henwick is currently in Berlin filming “The Matrix” sequel and told ComicBook that she’s seeing industry-changing crafts work happening on set.
“There are definitely moments on set where Yahya [Abdul-Mateen II] and I look at each other and we just go, ‘Matrix 4.’ Those pinch me moments,” Henwick said. “Yeah. Lana [Wachowski] is doing some really interesting things on a technical level in the same way that you know, she created a style back then. I think she’s going to change the industry again with this film. There’s some camera...

There are plenty of hit Broadway productions that are aching to be translated to film. Conversely, there are tons of shows that really have no need for a cinematic adaptation. It’s the ones that fall in between which present a paradox for creatives. Adapt it right and you could have something special. Do it in more of a flawed way and folks will struggle to understand what made he production a success in the first place. The Boys in the Band is one such example of a Broadway translation caught in no man’s land. Strong acting mixes a muddled filmmaking execution to form a flawed yet sporadically compelling new Netflix release. Some may love it. Some may hate it. Most will be left somewhere in between. The movie is an adaptation of the Broadway smash of the same name (as well as the prior motion picture). It’s a drama,...
