There are certain movies whose cultural impact is so undeniable that it becomes just a matter of time before a legacy sequel or, in the case of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, a standalone sequel is announced. Ten years after the release of the original film, here comes filmmaker Marvin Lemus – making his feature debut – and screenwriter Matt Lopez (Father of the Bride), who decide to bring a hilariously long title back to the big screen with Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Road Trip – for a more pleasant read, I’ll refer to it simply as Very Bad Road Trip.

A Mexican-American family discovers their heritage while battling an ancient curse on a road trip fraught with goofy disasters. Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Road Trip remakes the 2014 film and Judith Viorst's classic children's book with Latino flair. Themes of learning your roots and respecting cultural differences almost make up for the strained attempts at humor and a surprising lack of cast chemistry. There's no shortage of wild shenanigans, but they barely elicit a chuckle. The sitcom elements may work for the younger target audience, while parents will struggle to sit through a 90-minute runtime that feels much longer.

The constantly fretting, 11-year-old Alexander Garcia (Thom Nemer), worries that his bad luck will doom his family's upcoming trip from Denver to Mexico City. His mother, Val (Eva Longoria), a famous travel writer, has secured a luxurious coach Rv so they can all ride in style and comfort.

Here’s a synopsis: Alexander Garcia has always believed he has the worst luck in the world, so when his mom Val (Longoria) devises a plan to bring her seemingly disconnected family on a fancy vacation to Mexico City aboard a luxury Rv as part of her travel writing job, he is sure it will end in disaster. Despite his fears, the family – including dad Frank (Garcia), teen sister Mia, Grandma Lidia, and Grandpa Gil – set out, only to find absolutely everything is going terribly wrong.

In 2013, Jesse Garcia’s animal wrangler character delivered a few lines opposite Steve Carell’s family man character on the set of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. A decade later, Garcia found himself playing the family man character on the set of Very Bad Day’s standalone sequel, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Road Trip. The movies aren’t connected to one another, but Garcia still tried to spiritually tie one to the other by creating a backstory that his current chef character, Frank Garcia, worked as an animal wrangler to pay for culinary school.

Disney’s upcoming reboot of Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day appears to have a slightly different title, according to a Copyright Office entry.

Here’s a mildly interesting snippet of news for you. First announced in 2020, Disney’s reboot of Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day has been in the works for some time now. Another film based on Judith Viorst’s popular children’s book, it differs from the original by making its central family Latinx.

According to an entry on the US Copyright Office, this upcoming reboot has a slightly different, albeit entirely logical, title. It’s called Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Road Trip.

The entry also confirms that Marvin Lemus is directing the new movie, and that the cast will include Thomas Nemer (who plays the titular Alexander), Eva Longoria, Jessie Garcia, Cristo Fernandez...

Chávez will play Mia Garcia, the titular Alexander’s 16-year-old sister who is described as an independent-minded, intelligent and eye-rolling teenager. Her parents are Frank (Garcia) and Val (Longoria). Portillo plays Lidia Garcia, the family matriarch, the mother of Frank and grandmother to Alexander, Mia and David.

One of the most jeered-at, overcooked sequels of all time thoroughly deserves its reputation as a train wreck of a movie. In hindsight we see a heap of resources and cinematic fireworks thrown at a project with little chance of survival. ‘There must be a sequel’ spake Warner Bros., and lo Sir John of Boorman stepped up to the plate. I think a lot of the scorn was blowback from the power of the original Friedkin picture, a blockbuster that was just too profane of an act to follow.
