Jurnee Smollett Gained 20 lbs Of Muscle To Make ‘Smoke’ Role “Feel More Truthful”
Image
Jurnee Smollett‘s latest project required a little extra character work in the gym to fully embody her role.

While discussing her Marine-turned-arson investigator Michelle Calderone in the Apple TV+ series Smoke, new episodes available to stream Thursdays, the Emmy nominee recently opened up about the physical transformation she underwent for the part.

“She’s someone who uses working out as an escape, and she tries to push herself pretty hard,” she told People. “She’s running away from a lot of her emotions and pours it into different aspects of her life working out, but overworking out toxic relationships. She’s a workaholic and very ambitious. So, I knew physically that Michelle needed to have more of a muscular presence than I personally did.”

Smollett added, “I did put on initially 15 pounds, and by the end of shooting, I was up to 20 pounds, because I wanted that part to feel more truthful.

Smoke season 1 episode 6 recap: The walls are closing in
Image
As we left last week, Freddy (Ntare Mwine) had lost control completely, and Dave (Taron Egerton) was rushing to the scene, charged by the idea of catching him.

That’s when the world fell away as he was hit by a drunk driver. How would the accident change things? That’s what we waited to find out as we got this season’s sixth episode, “Manhood.” Let’s dive into the happenings this week.

A feverish investigation

Turns out, Dave was Ok. Sure, he’s a little beat up, but it could be much worse. But if his physical state was Ok, his mental state takes a hit right away. Ashley (Hannah Emily Anderson) is at his bedside, but not out of concern. Quickly, she shares that her hope had been that he was gone. Instead, as he’s healthy and soon to be released, the call clarified her feelings.

Smoke season 1 episode 4 recap: Pain is a powerful motivator
Image
This post contains spoilers from Smoke season 1 episode 4 from this point forward.

We all have trauma. That trauma varies from person to person, as does the response to trauma. But for many, trauma is a driver. It can be a driver for good or a driver for ill. For our three central characters in Smoke, all are dealing with past trauma and present trauma that drives their actions. For one of them, it’s in the right direction. Let’s dive into this week’s episode, “Strawberry.”

Anger as a driver

For Dave (Taron Egerton) and Freddy (Ntare Mwine), pain and anger are a driver toward their actions. Both are struggling this week. Both are a powder keg. And both are ready to lash out, especially by the end of this week’s episode.

Freddy has been passed over. He’s sad. Then angry. Then frustrated. He drops in on...

AppleTV’s ‘Smoke’ Cast And Character Guide
Image
A bunch of characters were introduced to us in the first two episodes of AppleTV+ original, Smoke. These characters were dealing with their own traumas; they had their own set of motivations and sensibilities. So let’s find out who these characters were and what role they had to play in the scheme of things.

Dave Gudsen

Dave Gudsen (Taron Egerton), the arson investigator from the Umberland Fire Department, seemed to be the kind of man who had a flair for the dramatic, who liked imagining himself as the hero in all situations, and who definitely didn’t like people stealing his thunder. In the first two episodes of Smoke, it became clear that the man wanted to do something great in his life. He was a very insecure man who always feared that somebody else would overshadow him and take all his credit. It wouldn’t be wrong to...

The main stream

Like clockwork, it's time yet again for another helping of The Bear.

FX’s award-winning comedy (we're not going to engage in that tired argument again) returns for its fourth season this week. Across 10 new episodes — all of which are now available to stream on Hulu — Carmy (Emmy winner Jeremy Allen White), Sydney (fellow Emmy winner Ayo Edebiri), Richie, and the rest of the family are moving forward and attempting to make the restaurant a success following middling reviews that call out the chaos and inconsistency of their dishes. Their pursuit of culinary excellence in the face of yet more challenges — including dwindling operational expenses — drives the season, resulting in a compelling new chapter that makes The Bear the...

Jurnee Smollett and Taron Egerton in Smoke (2025)

Smoke: What Critics Are Saying About Taron Egerton's Apple TV+ Series
Image
A new true-crime miniseries is coming to Apple TV+ and features a pretty stacked cast — so what do critics think of "Smoke," the latest effort from showrunner and writer Dennis Lehane?

First things first: "Smoke," which uses the podcast "Firebug" as its loose source material stars Taron Egerton (from the "Kingsman" films and "Rocketman"), Jurnee Smollett (who delivered a spectacular performance in "Birds of Prey" back in 2020), Adina Porter (a familiar figure in Ryan Murphy's extended universe), Rafe Spall, Anna Chlumsky (a "Veep" standout), and Hollywood mainstays John Leguizamo and Greg Kinnear. The gist here is that arson investigator Dave Gudsen (Egerton) and hard-boiled detective Michelle Calderon (Smollett) are trying to figure out who set a massive fire in the Pacific Northwest, and the answer is shockingly complicated.

Crime dramas are an industry staple these days, and it feels like there's a new entry into the genre on a basically constant basis.

Scarlett Johansson, Matt Damon, Kristin Chenoweth Sign Open Letter Opposing Snap, Medicaid Cuts: “This Is Unacceptable and Wrong”
Image
Scarlett Johansson, Matt Damon, Kristin Chenoweth, Danai Gurira and Zayn Malik are among a group of stars who signed an open letter, calling for Congress to reject proposed cuts to the supplemental nutrition assistance program (Snap) and Medicaid outlined in the Trump administration’s “Big Beautiful Bill.”

In the missive published Wednesday by nonprofit organization Feeding America, the entertainment industry figures are urging Congress “to reject cuts to these vital programs that help millions put food on their tables and provide access to health care.”

“We all have powerful memories of sharing meals with friends, with family and even with strangers in moments of celebration, grief or everything in between. Food is a beautiful way humans show care, compassion and love to those around us. It’s a fundamental part of the human experience and a basic right we all deserve,” the letter reads. “Ongoing high grocery costs mean food...

Smoke TV Review: Taron Egerton and Jurnee Smollett lead Dennis Lehane’s true crime-inspired thriller
Image
Plot: Inspired by true events, “Smoke” follows a troubled detective and an enigmatic arson investigator as they pursue the trials of two serial arsonists.

Review: The 2023 Apple TV+ limited series Black Bird presented a true crime drama with stellar performances from Taron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauser. Created by acclaimed novelist Dennis Lehane, the series fostered a creative partnership that has led to the new series, Smoke. With Lehane as showrunner and Egerton in the lead alongside Jurnee Smollett, Smoke draws inspiration from the true crime podcast Firebug but expands into an original narrative about dueling arsonists wreaking havoc in the Pacific Northwest while former firefighter Dave Gudsen (Taron Egerton) and detective Michelle Calderone (Jurnee Smollett) try to apprehend the criminals. It is a fascinating drama that draws on Lehane’s skill at chronicling cops and killers, mixed with multiple intricate characters. Smoke is a character study of the highest order,...

‘Smoke’ Review: Taron Egerton and Jurnee Smollett Make a Begrudging, Dynamic Team in Apple’s Fiery Crime Series
Image
Some fans on social media say looking at a trailer of Apple TV+’s “Smoke” reminds them of the early ‘90s film, “Backdraft.” While the film and the TV series both have fire as a main theme, “Smoke,” is not about saving lives. It’s really about destroying them.

Loosely based on the “Firebug” podcast that tells the story of John Leonard Orr, an arson investigator convicted of having set thousands of fires in the Los Angeles area over approximately two decades, “Smoke” was written by the prolific novelist-turned-screenwriter-turned-tv writer Dennis Lehane. Lehane’s books “Gone Baby Gone,” “Moonlight Mile,” “Shutter Island” and the Oscar-nominated “Mystic River” became movies. He found further success as a staff writer for the Emmy-winning shows “The Wire” and “Boardwalk Empire.” In 2022, Lehane developed the true crime drama (and fan favorite) Blackbird for AppleTV+. Blackbird starred Egerton, Greg Kinnear and Ray Liotta in his last role.

We Just Cast 9-1-1: Nashville Ourselves (You’re Welcome)
Image
For better or worse, 9-1-1: Nashville will be coming to a screen near you this fall!

To date, not much is known about the series.

We’ve had some casting updates and little teasers about some of the characters, but as we prepare to enter the dog days of summer, we don’t know much about what the latest entry in the 9-1-1 franchise will bring.

(Sonja Flemming/CBS)

One of the things we do know is that the series will be led by Christopher O’Donnell, the former Robin on the big screen, who also spent fourteen seasons playing Special Agent G. Callen on NCIS: Los Angeles.

He’ll portray Captain Don Sharpe, described as a veteran firefighter and former rodeo rider who will work alongside his son, Ryan (not yet cast), and lead a Nashville firehouse.

Taron Egerton Watches an Investigation Go Up in ‘Smoke’ in Exhilarating New Apple TV+ Series Trailer
Image
Last year, Taron Egerton took over Netflix with the hit movie Carry-On. This year, the British actor is diving once again into an edge-of-your-seat thriller, but this time in more understated tones. Today, Apple TV+ released the trailer for Smoke, a new investigative series that centers on an investigator who is trying to locate two serial arsonists that are wreaking fiery havoc and challenging the police. The series is set to premiere on June 27.

The trailer for Smoke suggests that the fire is one way to grab the attention of the police, but there's something else brewing that we can't quite put our finger on. This is reflected in Egerton's character, Dave Gudsen, who gets so deeply involved in the mystery that it might bring some permanent consequences for his psyche. In that scenario, it looks like police detective Michelle Calderone (Jurnee Smollett) will be fundamental to keeping Dave grounded during the investigation.

In the trailer (which you can watch below), Calderone tries to get off on the right foot with Gudsen, telling him, “Your reputation precedes you.” But he’s territorial about the case. And his office. “You preceded me too. Into my own office,” he replies.

From Milo Ventimiglia Playing a Gay Teen to Joel McHale Waterboarding Noah Galvin: Actors Recall Their Most Indie Projects
Image
Milo Ventimiglia was just 19 years old and starting out in Hollywood when he was cast as a gay teen in the 1996 short, “Must Be the Music.” You’d think his team would have advised him not to play queer, but Ventimiglia says he received nothing but support to sign on.

“I played a gay teenager who is going out with his friends, meets a guy but his buddy’s best friend is already kind of sweet on that guy,” Ventimiglia remembered. “Then he ends up giving them a ride home and he gets the guys number. It was a very sweet story.”

The short was produced by Gus Van Sant.

“That’s the great thing about being an actor,” the “This Is Us” star said at the Film Independent Spirit Awards on Sunday. “You play a lot of different roles. You represent a lot of roles. You represent a lot of stories.
