Big Freedia Takes Us to Church
Image
Baptist preacher and blues musician the Rev. Robert Jones Sr. once told an interviewer that “the sacred and the secular grew up right next to each other,” backing his claim with Psalm 30:5: “Weeping endures for a night but joy comes in the morning.” Such is the sentiment behind Pressing Onward, the first gospel record from bounce artist Big Freedia.

The 14-track project opens with “Revival,” a bluesy piece in which a handpicked choir chants to its audience — whom they deem their “sisters and brothers” — to “love one another,...

‘Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ Just Got a Capitol-Worthy Filming Update
Image
Lionsgate has officially started production on The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, with cameras rolling in Spain on the highly anticipated adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ latest novel. A new behind-the-scenes video released by the studio shows the crew and director Francis Lawrence kicking off the shoot, signaling the first step toward the film’s November 20, 2026 worldwide release.

Returning to the franchise he helped define, Lawrence is directing from a screenplay by Billy Ray, with long-time producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson of Color Force once again steering the project. Cameron MacConomy serves as executive producer, while Meredith Wieck and Scott O’Brien oversee for Lionsgate.

Set 24 years before Katniss Everdeen’s name was drawn, Sunrise on the Reaping begins on the morning of the 50th Hunger Games — the infamous Second Quarter Quell. The story follows District 12’s Haymitch Abernathy (played by Joseph Zada) through the brutal arena experience that forged the sharp-tongued,...

Video: Cabaret Stars Billy Porter and Marisha Wallace Discuss Art as Resistance on Morning Joe
Image
Having recently begun their run in Broadway's Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, Tony Award winner Billy Porter and Olivier Award nominee Marisha Wallace visited MSNBC's Morning Joe to discuss the production, which is running through Sunday, October 19. During their appearance, the pair noted the relevance of the story, with Wallace noting that this production offers a chance to tell the familiar story through a new lens. "There were many expats like Josephine Baker and other artists who came to Europe during this time to flee the Jim Crow south," she explained. "But also, this story celebrates life and trying to push through these tough times that we are having [and asks] 'What is the role that we are playing?'" Porter went on to talk about the...

‘Hunger Games’ Star Josh Hutcherson Talks Possible ‘Sunrise on the Reaping' Role
Image
It’s hard to believe that it’s been 10 years since Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence last played the fan-favorite characters Peeta Mellark and Katniss Everdeen, respectively, in 2015’s The Hunger Games: Mockingjay: Part 2. Seriously, where does the time go? Anyway, since then, The Hunger Games movie franchise has only expanded, spawning two prequels: The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023), which centers on a young President Snow before he rose to power, and now, Sunrise of the Reaping, which will follow a 16-year-old Haymitch as he prepares to fight in the second Quarter Quell. With a star-studded cast confirmed for Sunrise of the Reaping, which is set to hit theaters in November 2026, rumors of a certain Hunger Games alum returning to make a surprise cameo in the upcoming sequel have been circulating online for quite a while now. But could there be some truth to these rumors?...

Josh Hutcherson Reveals if He Would Return for 'Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping'
Image
With The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping set to hit theaters on November 20, 2026, fans have been buzzing about whether any familiar faces from the original franchise might return — especially Josh Hutcherson, who portrayed Peeta Mellark across all four films in the blockbuster YA adaptation. Now, Hutcherson is weighing in. Speaking to Brit + Co, the actor finally broke his silence about possibly returning to the world of Panem.

“That’d be cool. No, I know nothing in that world right now. Hunger Games is amazing, and I’ve loved it for many years and I will love it forever.”

While Hutcherson hasn’t been approached to appear in Sunrise on the Reaping, the door isn’t closed, especially considering Peeta and Katniss do make a brief appearance in the book. Suzanne Collins’ newest installment takes place 24 years before the 74th Hunger Games, focusing on a young Haymitch Abernathy during his deadly run through the arena.

Josh Hutcherson On Potential ‘Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ Return: “That’d Be Cool”
Image
With the next prequel in The Hunger Games franchise hitting theaters on Nov. 20, 2026, at least one familiar face is open to returning.

Josh Hutcherson, who originated the role of Peeta Mellark in the 2012 adaptation of Suzanne Collins‘ first novel in the YA series, recently addressed the possibility of reprising the role in Sunrise on the Reaping, which has been rounding out its cast in recent months.

“That’d be cool. No, I know nothing in that world right now,” Hutcherson clarified to Brit + Co. “Hunger Games is amazing, and I’ve loved it for many years and I will love it forever.”

Although the events of Sunrise on the Reaping are set 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games, the book briefly features a grown Peeta and Katniss Everdeen (originated by Jennifer Lawrence) as Haymitch Abernathy (which Joseph Zada is set to take over from Woody Harrelson) recounts the...

Broadway Box Office: ‘Pirates! The Penzance Musical’ Closes, ‘Wicked’ Retakes Top Spot
Image
Broadway grosses fell 7 percent compared to the prior week, as the industry saw its first week without Sunset Blvd., which had been a high-grossing show in its final months.

The musical played its final performance at the St. James Theatre on July 20 and was the highest grossing show that week. Still, Wicked took back its reign as the highest grossing show last week with $2.4 million, followed by The Lion King with $2.2 million, Hamilton with $2.2 million (in the leadup to its 10-year-anniversary on Broadway), Aladdin with $1.6 million and Mj with $1.4 million. Overall attendance was down 4 percent from the prior week.

Pirates! The Penzance Musical played its final performance at the Todd Haimes Theatre on July 27 and saw the second highest gross of its run, at $567,633. The musical, which began performances in May, played to more than 100 percent capacity last week. Jinkx Monsoon, who starred in the show, will next take over...

Elle Fanning Credits Fans for Her ‘Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ Casting
Image
Elle Fanning said Hunger Games fans are the reason she was cast as Effie Trinket in the upcoming prequel film.

During a recent interview with MTV, the actress chatted about her casting in Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping and taking the role over from Elizabeth Banks, who portrayed an older version of Effie in the franchise’s first four films.

“It was funny because I think fans made this happen in a way,” Fanning said. “The studio [Lionsgate] said they were getting kind of hounded online, like, ‘Elle needs to play Effie.’”

The A Complete Unknown star added that she’s especially excited to play Effie because she’s been “a huge fan” for some time.

“Effie has always been my favorite character,” she explained. “I think Elizabeth Banks brought so much — just even beyond those books — layers to that character. I love her, and I have got to talk to Elizabeth.

Erin Westerman Named President at Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Amid Studio Shake-Up
Image
Erin Westerman has been formally named president of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, replacing Nathan Kahane after he recently announced plans to step down by the end of the year.

Kahane’s pending move back to film producing opened the way for Westerman, most recently president of production and development, to take over all studio production under Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson.

Kahane has been Motion Picture Group president since May 2018, when Lionsgate acquired Good Universe, the production company he founded with Joe Drake. Drake stepped down from Lionsgate in early 2024 to pave the way for Fogelson, which in a way foreshadowed Kahane’s eventual exit.

Westerman, a former Good Universe and Disney exec, joined Lionsgate in 2017 as executive vp production, overseeing the studio’s creative film production team, before moving up the ranks. In her new role, she will oversee all development and production of Lionsgate’s theatrical film release slate.

Emmys Diversity Report 2025: LGBTQ and Black Performers Thrive, but Overall Poc Representation Is Down
Image
First, the good news about this year’s Emmy nominees: Queer, Black, Asian and Latino performers made history. The less good news: Overall representation is down for people of color, especially for folks of Asian and indigenous descent.

Of the 92 total performers nominated in the acting categories, 24 of them are people of color, a dip from 2024, when Asian, Latino and Black actors made significant strides, with 30 nominees.

This year, members of the LGBTQ community did well across all categories. Bella Ramsey picked up their second Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for HBO’s “The Last of Us,” becoming the only nonbinary performer to be twice nominated for acting Emmys. This bit of history builds on Ramsey’s own milestone from 2023, when they became the first openly nonbinary actor to be nominated in a lead acting category.

Queer actors were particularly well represented in the supporting actor in a comedy series category,...

“So, I was FaceTiming him because he was like, ‘I’m in L.A.’ And I’m like, ‘What are you doing in L.A., loser? Let’s hang out,’ ” Emily Alyn Lind said. “And I FaceTime him and he is at this hotel and he’s being Joe. And he’s like, ‘Yeah, I’m out here. You can’t tell anyone but it’s down to me and a couple [other] people for this Hunger Games thing.’”

“And I was like, ‘Oh, no fucking way. That’s so sick,’ ” Lind added. “And he’s naming names that...

Eddie Redmayne-Backed ‘Cabaret’ to End Broadway Run in October
Image
Cabaret will end its New York run Oct. 19 after about 14 months on Broadway.

The closing notice comes after the production undertook a large-scale remodeling of the August Wilson Theatre and has mounted a costly, immersive production, with reports of the show being capitalized for up to $24 million. With the early closing notice, and bumpy grosses throughout its run, the show will likely exit Broadway without recouping.

In the final 13 weeks of the run, Billy Porter will take over as the Emcee and Marisha Wallace will take over as Sally Bowles starting July 22. The two reprise the roles they played in the production in London’s West End.

The musical opened on Broadway in April 2024, starring Gayle Rankin and Eddie Redmayne, who first played the role in the West End. Since then, the production has brought in several big-name replacements, including Adam Lambert and Auli’i Cravalho and Orville Peck and Eva Noblezada,...

‘Cabaret At The Kit Kat Club’ Will End Broadway Run In October With Billy Porter & Marisha Wallace In Lead Roles
Image
Broadway’s Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club will close on Sunday, October 19, producers announced today, ending a 14-month run that was spotty at the box office and almost certainly will leave investors short from recouping the revival’s estimated $23 million-plus costs.

Also today, producers announced that Billy Porter and Marisha Wallace will be the show’s final Emcee and Sally Bowles, with the two actors taking over the roles on Tuesday, July 22.

Producers have not revealed or confirmed the show’s capitalization amount or whether the show has recouped or is expected to recoup.

“I can think of no better way to celebrate this production’s incredible run on Broadway than by welcoming Billy and Marisha into the company for our final 13 weeks,” said director Rebecca Frecknall. “They brought down the house every night on the West End, and I cannot wait for Broadway audiences to experience the electricity they generate together.

‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping’ Casts Jhaleil Swaby As Panache
Image
Exclusive: Jhaleil Swaby (The Lake) has been cast in Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping as Panache, a crude and aggressive career tribute from District 1, known for his arrogance and ruthlessness, sources confirm to Deadline. The film is set to premiere on November 20, 2026.

Based on the bestselling novel by Suzanne Collins, the latest installment of the Hunger Games dystopian YA franchise revisits the world of Panem 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games, starting on the morning of the reaping of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. The story centers on 16-year-old Haymitch (Joseph Zada), a clever and resourceful boy from District 12, who’s unexpectedly chosen for this edition of the games, featuring a deadly twist: twice the number of tributes, with 48 children sent into the arena to battle for their lives.
