Lionsgate has officially started production on The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, with cameras rolling in Spain on the highly anticipated adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ latest novel. A new behind-the-scenes video released by the studio shows the crew and director Francis Lawrence kicking off the shoot, signaling the first step toward the film’s November 20, 2026 worldwide release.

Returning to the franchise he helped define, Lawrence is directing from a screenplay by Billy Ray, with long-time producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson of Color Force once again steering the project. Josh Hutcherson, who originated the role of Peeta Mellark in the 2012 adaptation of Suzanne Collins‘ first novel in the YA series, recently addressed the possibility of reprising the role in Sunrise on the Reaping, which has been rounding out its cast in recent months.

Broadway grosses fell 7 percent compared to the prior week, as the industry saw its first week without Sunset Blvd., which had been a high-grossing show in its final months.

The musical played its final performance at the St. James Theatre on July 20 and was the highest grossing show that week. Still, Wicked took back its reign as the highest grossing show last week with $2.4 million, followed by The Lion King with $2.2 million, Hamilton with $2.2 million (in the leadup to its 10-year-anniversary on Broadway), Aladdin with $1.6 million and Mj with $1.4 million. The Hunger Games: On Stage is set to debut on West End later this year, and casting is already on the way.

Elle Fanning said Hunger Games fans are the reason she was cast as Effie Trinket in the upcoming prequel film.

During a recent interview with MTV, the actress chatted about her casting in Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping and taking the role over from Elizabeth Banks, who portrayed an older version of Effie in the franchise’s first four films.

“It was funny because I think fans made this happen in a way,” Fanning said. “The studio [Lionsgate] said they were getting kind of hounded online, like, ‘Elle needs to play Effie.’”

The A Complete Unknown star added that she’s especially excited to play Effie because she’s been “a huge fan” for some time.

“Effie has always been my favorite character,” she explained. “I think Elizabeth Banks brought so much — just even beyond those books — layers to that character. I love her, and I have got to talk to Elizabeth.

Lionsgate has named Erin Westerman president of its Motion Picture Group, TheWrap has learned. Adam Fogelson, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair, shared the news Thursday.

In her role, Westerman will oversee all aspects of the development and production of Lionsgate’s slate of theatrical film releases. She will report to Fogelson.

Erin Westerman has been formally named president of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, replacing Nathan Kahane after he recently announced plans to step down by the end of the year.

Kahane’s pending move back to film producing opened the way for Westerman, most recently president of production and development, to take over all studio production under Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson.

Kahane has been Motion Picture Group president since May 2018, when Lionsgate acquired Good Universe, the production company he founded with Joe Drake. Drake stepped down from Lionsgate in early 2024 to pave the way for Fogelson, which in a way foreshadowed Kahane’s eventual exit.

Westerman, a former Good Universe and Disney exec, joined Lionsgate in 2017 as executive vp production, overseeing the studio’s creative film production team, before moving up the ranks. In her new role, she will oversee all development and production of Lionsgate’s theatrical film release slate.

Exclusive: Marisha Wallace, the two-time Olivier Award nominee about to take over the role of Sally Bowles in Broadway’s Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, has signed with Amplified for US representation.

Wallace, who is American with British citizenship, most recently was seen starring as Sally in the West End production of director Rebecca Frecknall’s production of Cabaret, and will be reprising the role at Broadway’s August Wilson Theatre beginning July 22. She and Billy Porter will play Sally and the Emcee for the production’s final 13 weeks.

UK distributor and producer-financier True Brit has co-financed $125m of UK film production budgets in the company’s first 18 months of operation, confirmed founder and CEO Zygi Kamasa at the company’s inaugural slate presentation in London yesterday (July 2).

In an interview with People magazine, Zada’s We Were Liars costar Emily Alyn Lind recalled talking to him when he was auditioning for the coveted role.

Cabaret will end its New York run Oct. 19 after about 14 months on Broadway.

The closing notice comes after the production undertook a large-scale remodeling of the August Wilson Theatre and has mounted a costly, immersive production, with reports of the show being capitalized for up to $24 million. With the early closing notice, and bumpy grosses throughout its run, the show will likely exit Broadway without recouping.

In the final 13 weeks of the run, Billy Porter will take over as the Emcee and Marisha Wallace will take over as Sally Bowles starting July 22. The two reprise the roles they played in the production in London’s West End.

The musical opened on Broadway in April 2024, starring Gayle Rankin and Eddie Redmayne, who first played the role in the West End. Since then, the production has brought in several big-name replacements, including Adam Lambert and Auli’i Cravalho and Orville Peck and Eva Noblezada,...

Broadway’s Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club will close on Sunday, October 19, producers announced today, ending a 14-month run that was spotty at the box office and almost certainly will leave investors short from recouping the revival’s estimated $23 million-plus costs.

Also today, producers announced that Billy Porter and Marisha Wallace will be the show’s final Emcee and Sally Bowles, with the two actors taking over the roles on Tuesday, July 22.

Producers have not revealed or confirmed the show’s capitalization amount or whether the show has recouped or is expected to recoup.
