Now that’s dedication in marriage: Paul Newman’s first directed feature film is a drama showcase for his spouse Joanne Woodward, one likely to garner critical attention. A small-town teacher deals with boredom, isolation, repression, and dwindling hope; the carefully measured conflicts allow good input from actors Kate Harrington, Estelle Parsons, and James Olson as the lover with the right approach at just the right time. It’s a picture of sensitive emotions: is Rachel Cameron really becoming a spinster? Does she have any choice in the matter? Middle age does tend to sneak up on a person . . .

Paul Newman in Bicentennial Minutes (1974)
Paul Newman’s Children Accuse Newman’s Own Foundation of Violating Actor’s Wishes in New Lawsuit
Paul Newman in Bicentennial Minutes (1974)
Paul Newman’s daughters have filed a lawsuit against the Newman’s Own Foundation, the charity organization founded in 1982. Susan Kendall Newman of Oregon, and Nell Newman of California say the foundation is refusing to meet its contractual obligations to them as a pretext to cutting ties with them entirely.

The Newman’s Own Foundation raises money for charity through the sales of various foods bearing Newman’s face. According to the lawsuit, filed Tuesday in Stamford, Connecticut, Newman secured several conditions when he licensed his image, among them that Newman’s Own would contribute 400,000 dollars per year — a total of 800,000 — to charitable foundations run by each of his daughters.

However, the lawsuit says that shortly after Newman’s death in 2008, the foundation informed them it could at any time cease its contributions to their own charitable organizations, and that this contradicts Newman’s explicit wishes.

A lawsuit exposing a rift between two of Paul Newman’s daughters and the late actor’s charitable foundation alleges its leaders are betraying Newman’s directives for his family to be intimately involved in the organization.

They allege the Newman’s Own Foundation improperly cut the mandated contributions to entities controlled by the daughters, Susan Kendall Newman and Nell Newman, from 400,000 to 200,000 annually, according to the suit filed on Tuesday in Connecticut state court. They claim it’s the first step toward completely ousting their family from the foundation funded by profits from their father’s publicity rights.

“Newman’s Own Foundation lost its way and strayed from its mission to preserve and honor Paul Newman’s legacy,” states the complaint. “The years since Mr. Newman’s death consist of a long and consistent pattern of disregard, by those in control, of Mr.

The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds
Of all the ‘depressed relationship’ dramas of the early ’70s, this may be the most rewarding. It also sports one of the longest titles on record. Paul Zindel’s award-winning play gets a marvelous adaptation for the screen, thanks to Alvin Sargent, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. There’s also the stealth input of the star couple’s daughter Nell Potts, whose restrained performance is the happy opposite of mawkish and maudlin.

Joanne Woodward on TCM: Rachel, Rachel; Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams
Joanne Woodward never became a major box-office draw. No matter. Woodward was one of the best film actresses of the 20th century, as can be attested by her work in The Three Faces of Eve; Rachel, Rachel (right); Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams; The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds; and Mr. and Mrs. Bridge. Woodward's absence from the big screen after a supporting role in Jonathan Demme's 1993 AIDS drama Philadelphia is indeed cinema's loss. On Tuesday, August 16, Turner Classic Movies will be presenting 13 Joanne Woodward movies as part of TCM's "Summer Under the Stars" film series. [Joanne Woodward Movie Schedule.] Four of those are TCM premieres: Leo McCarey's weak comedy Rally Round the Flag, Boys! (1958), with Paul Newman as Woodward's love interest, and Joan Collins sultrily stealing the show; Burt Reynolds' highly successful black comedy The End (1978), about a dying man's attempts at killing himself with the assistance of a...
