In 1988, the Topps Company – creators of trading cards dedicated to everything from Major League Baseball to Garbage Pail Kids – released one of the most ambitious lines ever to hit the non-sport market: Fright Flicks. Each pack included nine cards that featured images from horror movies like Alien, Aliens, A Nightmare on Elm Street 1-3, An American Werewolf in London, Fright Night, Pumpkinhead, Ghostbusters, Poltergeist and Poltergeist II, The Fly, Predator, and Day of the Dead. Also featured in each pack was one sticker and a piece of the company’s infamous bubble gum.
To be clear, Topps had a storied history of creating cards that catered to monster kids, having already released Alien and Jaws 2 lines. In 1973, their Creature Feature line showcased black and white images from classic horror films paired with comedic captions to enhance the modern fun. A second line followed in 1980, but...

Garbage Pail Kids gave birth to my anti-authority streak. I was in fifth grade waiting for art class to start and showing off my prized Ashcan Andy to enraptured classmates when my teacher walked in the classroom, sighed, confiscated the card and proceeded to rip it up. “This junk has no place in an art room,” she stoically declared as Andy was transformed into sad confetti before my eyes. Years later, I came to realize that this demonstration was all about jealousy – these cards had instantly engaged students in art in a way that her years of teaching never could.
And let me be clear here: Garbage Pail Kids are most definitely art. Often grotesque and always eye-catching, the unfortunate children showcased on these cards fostered an interest in painting, illustration, and design...

As of 2020, the Garbage Pail Kids have been around for 35 years, and the gross little guys are apparently celebrating the occasion with the release of their owned themed version of Monopoly. From The Op, the game plays almost like your standard version of Monopoly, though the various pieces, parts, and game board will obviously all be given a Garbage Pail Kids makeover. According to Garbage Pail Kids artist Joe Simko, who revealed the game's box art in a Facebook post, the game is officially licensed and comes complete with Gpk-style tokens.
Produced by Topps, the Garbage Pail Kids first came onto the scene in 1985 in the form of collectible trading cards. Its concept created by cartoonist Art Spiegelman, the first line of cards were drawn almost entirely by John Pound. A spoof of the popular Cabbage Patch Kids dolls which were the craze at the time, the unique characters shown...

Joaquin Phoenix now has his own Garbage Pail Kids card as Joker. Phoenix was recently named PETA's Person of the Year, but getting immortalized on an iconic Garbage Pail Kids card has to be better than that. The actor has had quite the ride with director Todd Phillips after finally taking on a comic book movie. Phoenix was unsure about the business mechanics surrounding the world of superheroes, so he was always weary about taking up an offer. However, Phillips pitched him the right idea at the right time.
Joker is unlike any comic book movie before it, though there will more than likely be a lot like it now since it has become such a big success. And the same can be said about Garbage Pail Kids in the trading card realm. There have been many, many copycats over the years, but nothing beats the original. Artist Joe Simko...

Chances are if you grew up creepy, you owned a fair share of Garbage Pail Kids cards. I know I had a ton of these, and most of my childhood belongings were also covered in their stickers. I never got into baseball cards or the various other attempts to lure kids to collect cardboard as if they were tiny squares of heroin. However, anytime I went out shopping with my Mom and my eye spotted a box of Garbage Pail Kids, my collection would grow a little larger. If you share such fond memories of this franchise as I do, then I have the kickstarter of your dreams!
