Veteran TV and movie composer Mark Snow has died. A veteran musician and composer, Snow was best known for composing the haunting opening theme of The X-Files, in addition to scoring every episode of the series. Snow also composed for series like Blue Bloods, Smallville, and Ghost Whisperer. Snow died at his home in Connecticut at age 78.

Snow's death was announced by his longtime friend and colleague, Sean Callery, according to Variety. Snow was born Martin Fulterman on August 26, 1946, and grew up in Brooklyn, New York. He studied at Juilliard and was friends and roommates with fellow future screen composer Michael Kamen; the two formed a band, Emil and the Detectives. He started out as a record producer, but his brother-in-law, actor Georg Stanford Brown, talked mega-producer Aaron Spelling into trying out Fulterman as a composer on their cop show, The Rookies. It's no secret that Western movies are defined by their action scenes and explosive violence. It's a mainstay of the genre since shootouts and saloon brawls make their way into almost every project that can be considered a Western. John Wayne was a humbled man early in the 1960s. His passion project, "The Alamo," had fallen well short of box office expectations in 1961. An epic Western about the siege of the basement-less San Antonio mission, Wayne directed the film and took its failure personally. He didn't need a hit; even at his lowest point in the 1970s, a Wayne picture at a certain budget level was an automatic greenlight. Still, Wayne was a prideful man who actively tended to his legacy; he was mindful of his fan base, and sought their approval. So Wayne came charging out of his corner in 1962, and knocked out every last naysayer with Howard Hawks' "Hatari!," "How the West Was Won," "The Longest Day" and John Ford's "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance."

Kim Kahana, the stunt performer, teacher, coordinator and war hero who played Chongo on the kids show Danger Island and doubled for Charles Bronson in several action films, has died. He was 94.

Kahana died Monday of natural causes at his home in Groveland, Florida, his wife, Sandy Kahana, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Kahana, 5-foot-7 and 150 pounds, taught stunts to many thousands of students since the mid-1970s in six-week courses that took place in Chatsworth, California, and Central Florida. Many went on to have thriving careers in show business.

He also had six different black belt degrees — he taught martial arts, too — and worked as a professional bodyguard protecting Hollywood types.

A native of Hawaii, Kahana appeared in his first film as a biker in the Marlon Brando-starring The Wild One (1953) and was an extra in other movies before he realized that stunt performers got paid more than he did.

David McCallum, who starred as Illya Kuryakin alongside Robert Vaughn’s Napoleon Solo in the 1960s hit spy drama “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” and had a supporting role as pathologist Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard on the top-rated series “NCIS” decades later, died Monday of natural causes in New York City. He was 90.

His son Peter made a statement on behalf of his family, saying, “He was the kindest, coolest, most patient and loving father. He always put family before self. He looked forward to any chance to connect with his grandchildren, and had a unique bond with each of them. He and his youngest grandson, Whit, 9, could often be found in the corner of a room at family parties having deep philosophical conversations.

The 1980s is the peak era for crime shows. They started not only showing police procedures on every network but a little something from the other side of fighting crime and solving mysteries. The people who sometimes lurk in the shadows, cross the line, or bend the truth to serve justice on a platter. But the '80s was the time for amateur detectives and private investigators like Jessica Fletcher (Dame Angela Lansbury) of Murder She Wrote, the A-Team, Macgyver (Richard Dean Anderson), and Johnathan and Jennifer Hart from Hart to Hart. But in all the glory held by those television investigators, none is as iconic of the bunch as Thomas Sullivan Magnum IV, played most dashingly by Tom Selleck in the series Magnum P.I. (And not just because of his character's short shorts — but it doesn't hurt!)...

Andrew V. McLaglan's 1963 film "McLintock!" is a loose Western adaptation of William Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew" (c. 1592), a problematic play to say the least. The story of Shakespeare's play involves a willful and bitter young woman named Kate who refuses to settle down and get married. This upsets Kate's younger sister Bianca, as she will not be permitted to marry until Kate is married. A man named Petruchio is hired to, as the title says, tame the shrew, transforming an outspoken and willful woman into a dutiful wife. By the end, he does. One can easily see the play's misogynist leanings. Critically speaking, one might be able to see a satire at play, however. Or perhaps it's merely sexist. 

"McLintock!" is equally tetchy, with John Wayne playing the Petruchio role, and Maureen O'Hara playing Kate. The story was altered somewhat to explain that Kate and Petrucho, called G.

This mid-60s detective story has the right ingredients — a good mystery and interesting characters. David Jannsen gets to play a ‘Bosch’- style lone wolf investigator given a public thrashing for a ‘mistake’ that he knows was no mistake at all. Can a ‘bad cop’ redeem himself? The parade of mid-level guest stars — Stefanie Powers, Joan Collins, Lillian Gish, Steve Allen — may resemble a TV movie, but the tense show has a good feel for Los Angeles and the new swingin’ singles lifestyle. It might be Buzz Kulik’s best job of direction, and it has a great music score by Jerry Goldsmith.

Boris Karloff: The Man Behind The Monster is a gloriously enjoyable retrospective of the legendary actor, who is forever tied to the horror genre and the monster role of Frankenstein’s monster, which first brought him fame. The film, directed by Thomas Hamilton, is thoroughly enjoyable but, despite its subtitle, it is less a personal biography than a review of this career, with an emphasis on how his work influenced future filmmakers and the horror genre. Karloff fans and serious film history buffs will find little that was not already known about the man but it is a wonderful introduction and retrospective on Boris Karloff.

Jodi Long has been elected president of SAG-AFTRA’s Los Angeles local, defeating Yvette Nicole Brown by a vote of 7,154 to 6,096. She succeeds Patricia Richardson as the local’s president.

The L.A. local, which represents nearly half of the union’s entire membership, long has been a stronghold for the MembershipFirst opposition party, which won all three of the local’s officer races, 11 of the 14 open national board seats and 31 of the 41 local board seats reserved for actors and performers. They were the top 10 vote-getters for the national board and the top nine for the local board.

Shout! Studios has announced today their acquisition of North American distribution rights to Boris Karloff: The Man Behind The Monster. This captivating new documentary sheds light on William Henry Pratt (better known by his stage name, Boris Karloff) as Hollywood’s master of menace, as well as his films, his legend and the fears that haunted him through his life.

Abramorama will release the film in theaters on September 17th.

Karloff is best known for his role as “The Monster” in the classic horror films Frankenstein (1931), Bride of Frankenstein (1935) and Son of Frankenstein (1939). This documentary examines his extraordinary 60-year career in the entertainment industry, as well as his continuing influence as a horror icon.

The Golden Globes love Caitriona Balfe. She has contended as Best TV Drama Actress for each of the first four seasons of “Outlander.” Indeed, the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., which hands out the Globes annually, just cannot quit the Irish actress.

By now, there have been enough movies and TV dramas focused on the fraying ties between individuals gradually diminished by Alzheimer’s disease and their supportive but increasingly stressed loved ones to constitute an entire subgenre. If “The Artist’s Wife” stands apart from the pack, it’s largely because this familiar but affecting drama spends less time on depicting the systematic lessening of an exceptional intellect — though, rest assured, that tragedy is not at all minimized — and focuses more on the psychic toll taken on a loyal life partner whose selflessness is running on empty.

Right from the start, director Tom Dolby, working in concert with co-writers Nicole Brending and Abdi Nazemian, makes it clear that Claire (Lena Olin), the younger but no longer young wife of aged celebrity artist Richard Smythson (Bruce Dern), long ago settled into subservience in the spacious confines of their well-appointed East Hamptons home.

Strand Releasing and Water’s End Productions has decided to postpone the domestic release of The Artist’s Wife in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The Tom Dolby-directed drama starring Lena Olin and Bruce Dern was set to debut on April 3 in New York, April 10 in Los Angeles and April 17 in San Francisco. The film will be released later this year.

“With our particular audience as well as the general public’s safety in mind, we have decided to delay the release of The Artist’s Wife,” said Dolby. “This film is about love and hope bringing people together in the face of adversity, and it’s important to us that as much of our audience as possible is able to see it in a group setting. We’re enthusiastic about showing the film when the time is right.”

Strand Releasing has acquired all U.S. rights to Tom Dolby’s “The Artist’s Wife” starring Lena Olin and Bruce Dern. The movie premiered at the Hamptons Film Festival, went on to play at the Mill Valley festival and will next go on to screen at Palm Springs.

Shot in the Hamptons and New York City, the film centers on Claire (Olin), who was once a promising painter and has long lived in the shadow of her husband, a renowned artist named Richard Smythson (Dern). When Richard is diagnosed with dementia, Claire must make challenging decisions for her family, her husband and ultimately, herself.

“The Artist’s Wife is about new beginnings and how challenges can open doors to self-discovery in life’s third act,” said Dolby, who added that the film “showcases Lena and Bruce’s talents front and center.”

Technology is never to be trusted; as evolved as it has become, the thought of sentience and ill will striking back at our computer dependent life will never go away – and kids, just because you use Incognito, nothing is ever really gone. (Trust me.) Enter Paper Man (1971), an early entry into the A.I. Paranoia Sweepstakes that is pretty prescient and a damn entertaining thriller to boot.

Originally broadcast as part of The New CBS Friday Night Movies, Paper Man fought it out against ABC’s lineup of Room 222/The Odd Couple/Love, American Style and NBC’s World Premiere Movie, surely losing to the former’s solid roster. The world was just not ready for computer hijinks if it didn’t involve Stanley Kubrick or Kurt Russell.

Chicago – The TV, movie and entertainment world is coming back to Chicagoland with The Hollywood Show on March 17th and 18th, 2018, at the Hyatt Rosemont/Chicago O’Hare Hotel in Rosemont, Ill. In the TV series Hart to Hart, Robert Wagner played an amateur sleuth who with his wife, played by Stefanie Powers, investigated murder and intrigue among Los Angeles jet-setters.

Poisoning, kidnapping, blackmail, espionage, the golden couple cracked case after case in the ABC series which ran from 1979 to 1984.

Chicago – My year in capturing 2017 celebrity portraits is best summed up with a bit of poetry: My subjects skewed older and politically bolder/In a year that demanded change/My list is longer with work hopefully stronger/In capturing these faces not strange.

As per every year the ranking of these portraits are based on a combination of the star power wattage of the subjects, the artistic results and the difficulty of landing the quarry for those budding smart-phone celebrity stalkers who may wish to play along at home. Starting out in 1939 as the little studio that could, Hammer would finally make their reputation in the late fifties reimagining Universal’s black and white horrors as eye-popping Technicolor gothics – their pictorial beauty, thanks to cameramen like Jack Asher and Arthur Ibbetson, was fundamental to the studio’s legacy. So it’s been more than a little frustrating to see such disrespect visited upon these films by home video companies happy to smother the market with grainy prints, incoherent cropping and under-saturated colors. The House of Hammer and the film community in general deserve far better than that.

Thanks to Indicator, the home video arm of Powerhouse films based in the UK, those wrongs are beginning to be righted, starting with their impressive new release of Hammer shockers, Fear Warning! Even better news for stateside fans; the set is region-free, ready to be relished the world over.

The Farrah Fawcett Foundation (Fff) held its highly-anticipated fundraising event, Tex-Mex Fiesta, on Saturday, September 9, at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills.

Tex-Mex Fiesta was first held in 2015, and has raised close to $1 million to date, with proceeds benefitting Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C). Award-winning restaurant El Cholo catered the fiesta-style event, a theme inspired by the late Farrah Fawcett and her home state of Texas. Proceeds from this year’s Tex-Mex Fiesta once again benefited Stand Up To Cancer.

Jackie Collins, the bestselling author who sourced the TV miniseries Hollywood Wives and Lucky Chances, died on Saturday following a six-and-a-half year battle with breast cancer. She was 77.

“It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the death of our beautiful, dynamic and one-of-a-kind mother,” Collins’ family said in a statement to People. “She was a true inspiration, a trailblazer for women in fiction and a creative force. She will live on through her characters, but we already miss her beyond words.”

Deadline reports that NBC is currently developing a gay remake of the early '80s ABC show Hart to Hart, which starred Robert Wagner and Stefanie Powers as jet-setting sleuths. In their stead would be Jonathan Hart and Dan Hartman, a crime-solving power couple with Hart as the straitlaced attorney, and Hartman as the freewheeling investigator.
