Dawn Powell

The Wicked Witch of the West Village
Sometimes you still see them, lurking around Greenwich Village, scurrying past Starbucks and Duane Reade drugstores under their crumpled fedoras, ink-smeared newspapers in their gnarled hands, ghosts. These are the living reminders of the days when any artist, intellectual, blowhard, genius, fakir, poet, or debutante with a diploma from one of the 'Seven Sisters' and a penchant for hard liquor and brittle conversation could turn the world on its head --all within a half-mile radius of Washington Square. That scene was even far gone when Dawn Powell wrote her satiric elegy to it in 1954. But it rings true today, not just as a nostalgia-trip, but as an x-ray of the way people, especially that unique subspecies known as New Yorkers, live and work and make love and generally get on with life.

The Wicked Pavilion is razor sharp social satire that simultaneously mocks and celebrates a poisoned world gone wrong.

Gore Vidal at an event for Alexander (2004)
Gore Vidal Dead At 86
Gore Vidal at an event for Alexander (2004)
In a world more to his liking, Gore Vidal might have been president, or even king. He had an aristocrat's bearing – tall, handsome and composed – and an authoritative baritone ideal for summoning an aide or courtier.

But Vidal made his living – a very good living – from challenging power, not holding it. He was wealthy and famous and committed to exposing a system often led by men he knew firsthand. During the days of Franklin Roosevelt, one of the few leaders whom Vidal admired, he might have been called a "traitor to his class." The real traitors, Vidal would respond, were the upholders of his class.

The author, playwright, politician and commentator whose vast and sharpened range of published works and public remarks were stamped by his immodest wit and unconventional wisdom, died Tuesday at age 86 in Los Angeles.

Vidal died at his home in the Hollywood Hills at about 6:45 p.

Mamet in 'Come Back' Mode
The 90's were David Mamet's decade, the 00's not so much. If you're like me, the only noteworthy item in the last ten was the grossly under-appreciated 2004 film Spartan. Mamet will begin the new decade by wearing the scribe and producer's hat but leaving helming duties to Michael Worth, an unknown television actor whose turned to directing and is also producing a project that is based on a little known out of print book called Come Back To Sorrento by Dawn Powell. - The 90's were David Mamet's decade, the 00's not so much. Mamet Rebounds As Come Back To Sorrento Picks Up Producers
Last we heard from David Mamet, his script for a re-imagining of The Diary of Anne Frank was being rejected by Disney. While Disney seemed surprised that Mamet's work was not to their liking, the internet community was surprised from the beginning that the House of Mouse would hire a writer whose most famous work contains almost 140 variations of the word "fuck." But considering the man already has over 30 screenwriting credits to his name, it's not a shock that he has gotten back on the horse, and now his newest script has found people to develop it. According to THR, Mamet's newest screenplay, titled Come Back To Sorrento has found a home as Firefly and Bla Bla Bla Productions have joined to produce it. The script is an adaptation of the 1932 novel of the same name by Dawn Powell. Set during the Great Depression, the story centers on a music...
