‘Poker Face’: How Old Hollywood Camera Tricks Were Used to Create Cynthia Erivo’s Quintuplets
Image
Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers from “The Game Is a Foot” Season 2, Episode 1 of “Poker Face,” now streaming on Peacock.

“Poker Face” writer Laura Deeley came up with the idea of featuring identical quintuplets for an episode of the whodunit series, and creator and director Rian Johnson thought it was “batshit insane in all the best ways.” But he wanted to give it a shot.

Johnson didn’t want to use anything fancy to pull it off. He wanted to dig into what a “Poker Face” episode looks like, and maintain that vintage aesthetic that had been established in Season 1 — but he wanted to use old-school camera trickery when it came to filming. Johnson says, “To me, that meant making sure we’re making every ounce of ‘What’s Up Doc?’ and French farce-like in one door, out the other, near misses and pretending to be different people.”

It...

After the success of the first season, creator Rian Johnson has made the second must-watch television.

Charlie is back on the run from the five families. Literally dodging Beatrix Hasps’ bullets at every turn. On the journey in the second season Charlie meets fascinating characters and solves countless mysteries. ‘Poker Face’ Season 2 Episode 1 Recap: Was Amber Arrested?
Image
The overarching plot of Season 1 of Poker Face was largely about Charlie Cale running from Cliff LeGrand, who had been employed by Sterling Frost to catch her, apparently because she was instrumental in the death of his son, Sterling Frost Jr. So, for more than a year, Charlie kept hopping from town to town, solving murder mysteries with her innate ability to detect a lie, with Cliff on her tail. When she was trying to get out of the Colorado Mountains, she was grievously wounded by a murderer named Trey Nelson and subsequently hospitalized. Cliff finally captured her and presented her to Sterling, and that was where the old timer revealed that he didn’t want to kill her; he wanted to bring her into the fold and utilize her skills in a meeting with Beatrix Hasp and the Five Families. However, before that could happen, Cliff killed Sterling, on Beatrix’s orders,...

Australian director Kieran Darcy-Smith moved to L.A. off the back of his first feature, 2012's 'Wish You Were Here', co-written by his wife, Felicity Price.

This year saw the release of his first film since, 'The Duel', a western starring Liam Hemsworth and Woody Harrelson. He talks to If about living in L.A., the film's development process and a fraught production in Mississippi.

You.ve been living in La since Wish You Were Here, is that right?

We came over for Sundance for Wish You Were Here and the whole experience was a real trip for us. We had the opening night film and there was a massive party afterwards catered by some sort of celebrity chef who had been flown in. And all the top agents had flown up from L.A. specifically for that screening, and we were just being courted. At...

Blackwater Scandal Could Inspire A Movie At Warner Bros.
Warner Bros. has picked up a very hot potato, and some people are going to be very upset. Producer Jon Peters is backing Blackwater, a new project detailing the real-life privatized military contractor that gained notoriety during America's conflict with the Middle East. Now that there's a director on-board, Blackwater looks like it's about to move ahead with considerable speed. Deadline reports that Warner Bros. has enlisted Kieran Darcy-Smith to direct the project. Darcy-Smith is an Australian actor-turned-director who last year helmed Wish You Were Here, a small thriller he co-wrote with star Felicity Price. Blackwater is expected to focus on Erik Prince, a former Navy Seal who founded the private security firm in 1997. Even through controversy, Prince was the head of Blackwater USA until 2010, when the company was sold, its named changed to Academi. Wish You Were Here also starred Joel Edgerton and Teresa Palmer, and told the story...

DVD Review: 'Wish You Were Here'
★★★☆☆After carving out a successful career as an actor, including roles in films such as David Michôd's Animal Kingdom (2010) and The Reef (2010), Kieran Darcy-Smith shifts his focus behind the camera for Wish You Were Here (2012), a directorial debut that explores how one man's split decision can have a detrimental and devastating chain reaction on those around him. Joel Edgerton stars as Dave, a carefree hedonist holidaying in Cambodia with both his pregnant wife, played by co-writer Felicity Price and her younger sister Steph (Teresa Palmer). However, during one wild, drug-fuelled night, Steph's lucrative business-man boyfriend, Jeremy (Anthony Starr) mysteriously disappears without a trace.

Exclusive Clip: Wish You Were Here’s Teresa Palmer is Carefree in Cambodia
Wish You Were Here hit streets last Tuesday on DVD & VOD via the eOne Films folks, and we’ve got a clip of Aussie-born thesp Teresa Palmer (who’ll we will be seeing plenty of next year with Parts Per Billion, Malick’s Knight of Cups, Cut Bank, The Ever After) discussing the carefree character she portrayed in the psychological, tug of the rug type thriller.

Among the extras material on the disc, the clip below is among the set of cast and crew interviews (helmer Kieran Darcy-Smith, Felicity Price, Joel Edgerton, Antony Starr) that took place among what we imagine was the sun-drenched setting found in the film. While we don’t gain any additional insight into the character’s dynamic, we easily get a sense how she might approached her with a playfulness – which is of course how we are first presented to the character before the film switches in tone.

Dark Secrets Fuel 'Wish You Were Here'
Wish You Were Here (2012)
Some of the best films that come out of independent cinema are the ones in which actors and directors write for themselves to create an opportunity. Wish You Were Here, an Australian import that was a favorite at the Sundance Film Festival, is the perfect example. The film tells the story of a husband and wife (Joel Edgerton and Felicity Price, who co-wrote the film) who travel to exotic Cambodia with her younger sister and new boyfriend (Teresa Palmer and Anthony Starr), only to have their carefree getaway derailed when one of them disappears without a trace.

Pics: Hollywood's Sexiest Shirtless Men

[My husband/co-writer/director Kieran Darcy-Smith and I] both have been independently and together fascinated by the idea of the people left behind when someone disappears," Price explains to ETonline. "Especially when you just don't know what happened to them. … The story of four people going away [to Southeast Asia and one not returning] is actually inspired by a true story. It happened to a friend of ours."

But rather...

Wish You Were Here
Whatever sentiments the title Wish You Were Here evokes in you, flush them. Here is no lighthearted vacation comedy but, instead, a well-acted "psychological thriller" with few thrills but much angst.

In fact, the scariest aspect about watching Aussie writer/director Kieran Darcy-Smith's feature debut is the sinking feeling that the finale will not be worth the wait -- and when the penultimate scenes start unspooling and you realize you were clairvoyant, you will find yourself, as you mope towards the aisle, crunching any left-behind popcorn on the theater floor with unrepentant anger.

This saga begins rather joyfully with two Australian sisters vacationing in southern Cambodia in 2010. Pregnant Alice (Felicity Price) is accompanied by her rather stolid spouse, Dave (Joel Edgerton), while carefree and unwed Steph (Teresa Palmer) is under the wing of a prepossessing importer of Cambodian goods, jovial Jeremy (Anthony Starr).

The four sightsee, go to a museum featuring skulls,...

Review: 'Wish You Were Here' Starring Joel Edgerton & Teresa Palmer
Although its title implies either a whimsical journey of self-discovery or an ironic riposte to the vacation from hell, the story of “Wish You Were Here” is, in either context, a disappointingly pedestrian experience. The story of a husband and father trying to return to his normal life after a vacation with his wife and her sister that ends in the disappearance of his sister-in-law’s boyfriend, Kieran Darcy-Smith’s Australian import inspires a deluge of possibilities and provocative thoughts in its audiences’ heads, but languid pacing undermines the too-simple and ultimately too-conventional revelations that wrap up its simmering mysteries. Nevertheless, strong performances from the four leads sustains its unhurried approach far longer than the payoff deserves. Joel Edgerton plays Dave Flannery, an architect who agrees to take his wife Alice (Felicity Price) on a holiday in Cambodia after her sister Steph (Teresa Palmer) gets swept off her feet by a new boyfriend,...

Review: ‘Wish You Were Here’ Is a Postcard Scrawled In Guilt and Blood
A man and a pregnant woman lay on the beach, soaking in the sun and talking. Alice (Felicity Price) asks Jeremy (Antony Starr) if he could go anywhere where would he go, and he answers simply that he would stay there. The “there” in question is a small town on the southwestern shores of Cambodia, and after a brief montage of two couples enjoying a week free of responsibility we see them celebrating their last night there with some illicit pills. The next morning is a blur as Alice’s husband, Dave (Joel Edgerton), wanders a dawn-lit field, disheveled and bloodied. Jeremy meanwhile, instigator of the trip and brand new boyfriend to Alice’s sister, Steph (Teresa Palmer), has gone missing. Wish You Were Here is a dramatic thriller that explores guilt, doubt and responsibility through its various relationships. Husband to wife, sister to sister, and stranger to stranger are pairings that get tested by way of...

‘Wish You Were Here’ Review
In Wish You Were Here, two couples take a trip from Australia to South-East Asia on holiday – but only three of them return. Dave Flannery (Joel Edgerton) and his wife Alice (Felicity Price) have two children (and one on the way) – so for them, coping is a must. Alice’s younger sister Steph (Teresa Palmer) is left worrying about the fate of her missing beau, Jeremy (Antony Starr), with nary a person to lean on for support.

As the toll of that terrible trip wears on the trio, secrets from the past begin to surface, pointing towards ugly truths that none of them may be ready to face.

Wish You Were Here has a strong cast, an interesting enough premise and competent direction all going for it; however, the script and ...

Title: Wish You Were Here Director: Kieran Darcy-Smith Starring: Joel Edgerton, Teresa Palmer, Felicity Price and Antony Starr While people often strive to live as carefree and happy of a lifestyle as they can the stark realization that one person’s seemingly meaningless actions can drastically change the lives of many others can ultimately lead people to question their decisions. Teresa Palmer Talks Aussie Thriller 'Wish You Were Here' & The Upcoming 'The Ever After' With Mark Webber
On the sun-kissed coast of Cambodia, four young Australians party, explore and kick back and relax, soaking up the sun during the day, and sweating it out at night. But this idyllic backdrop holds something far more sinister in store and when only three of the four return home, so begins a mystery crossing national borders, and poised to fundamentally change the lives of everyone involved. So begins "Wish You Were Here," a lean thriller from director Kieran-Darcy Smith, from a script he co-wrote with one of the film's stars (and his wife), Felicity Price, in a picture that features two of Australia's hottest exports at the moment, Joel Edgerton and Teresa Palmer. And it's the actress we caught up with on the phone last week to talk about the movie, made under the Blue Tongue Films banner, a production house of like-minded collaborators that has put its stamp on movies like "Animal Kingdom,...

Do You Think You Can Tell?: Darcy-Smith’s Debut Promising, if Ultimately Contrived

Establishing an effective and potentially chilling set-up during its first few frames, Kieran Darcy-Smith’s Wish You Were Here evocatively recalls the Pink Floyd tune with which it shares a name for what promises to be a poetically charged mystery. Too bad that a stodgy and predictable finale will leave you cold, and potentially mars the film’s initial charms. Co-written with actress and star of the film, Felicity Price, Darcy-Smith builds an effective scenario to feverish foreboding, releasing its tension in a twinned lashing of shocking violence. But once the fury subsides and all has been revealed, it ends with the thud of a nicely packaged cliché.

Plopped into the midst of Dave (Joel Edgerton) and the very pregnant Alice’s (Felicity Price) strained domestic situation, we learn that they have recently returned from a...

Exclusive Clip: Joel Edgerton Desperately Worried in Kieran Darcy-Smith’s Wish You Were Here
Kieran Darcy-Smith’s Wish You Were Here was formerly titled “Say Nothing” – a perhaps more fitting description for several sequences in this relationship busting, mystery drama that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival back in 2012 (we were there for the premiere). In this exclusive clip provided by the eOne Films folks, we find actress-scribe Felicity Price’s character as not the root cause, but an unexpected burden on Joel Edgerton’s character continued state of distress and anxiety. Also starring Teresa Palmer, Antony Starr and a beautiful Cambodian backdrop, this receives a limited release in select theatres next Friday, June 7th.

Here’s the synopsis: Four friends indulge in a carefree Cambodian holiday, but their sun-soaked retreat quickly takes a horrific turn when one of the travelers disappears. As the search ensues, the others return home, racked with guilt and struggling to return to their daily lives. Does one of...

New Trailer for Joel Edgerton's Wish You Were Here
A new trailer has been released for Joel Edgerton's drama thriller Wish You Were Here. The trailer makes us wonder what in the hell his character is up to. It looks like a solidly intense psychological thriller. Edgerton is an amazing actor who's been in films such as Animal, Warrior, The Thing, and Zero Dark Thirty. I'm sure he gives yet another great performance in this.

The story follows four friends who lose themselves in the fun of a carefree South East Asian holiday. "Only three return home. Who amongst them knows what happened on that fateful night when they were dancing under a full moon in Cambodia?"

The movie was shown up at Sundance last year, and also stars Teresa Palmer, Felicity Price, and Antony Starr. It was co-written and directed by Kieran Darcy-Smith. The movie will get a limited release on June 7th.

‘Wish You Were Here’ Trailer: Yet Another Vacation Goes Horrifyingly Awry
Okay, movies, we get it now. We shouldn’t go on vacation anymore, it only seems to lead to sex, drugs, criminal trouble, and death. What’s that, you say? That was only Spring Breakers? There are plenty of wholesome vacation-based films to enjoy out there? Fine, why don’t you go ahead and just book my ticket straight to Kieran Darcy-Smith‘s Wish You Were Here then? Ah, gotcha! Looks like there is nothing but sex, drugs, criminal trouble, and death in that one, too! Of course, the new film from Blue-Tongue Films members Darcy-Smith (who co-wrote the film with star Felicity Price) is very, very different than Harmony Korine’s latest opus, but it still will keep us away from beach vacations for quite awhile. The film features rising star Joel Edgerton as Price’s husband, Teresa Palmer as her sister, and Antony Starr as Palmer’s new boyfriend, with...

Screen Aus grants development funding to 10 feature films
Screen Australia has granted more than $276,000 in funding to support the development of 10 feature films, including projects by the co-writer of local smash The Sapphires and the team behind Wish You Were Here.

It is a small financial lifeline for the industry which is no longer receiving drama production investment from the national government agency after it spent its entire annual $42 million budget in just six months.

Among the new feature film projects to receive funding is comedy-drama The Grip, written by Tony Briggs (The Sapphires). It follows five young Australian businessmen who discover the secret to winning the pokies and develop Robin Hood-like reputations. David Field (The Combination) will direct.

Writer Felicity Price and director Kieran Darcy-Smith (Wish You Were Here) have also received funding to develop a new (as yet) untitled thriller. It follows social misfit Vincent, who holds a flame for 17-year-old Amber, but when his hopes are crushed he acts impulsively,...

The academy also recognized "The Sapphires" director Wayne Blair and writers, Keith Thompson and Tony Briggs, who adapted the screenplay from Briggs' stage production inspired by his mother's experiences.

"The Sapphires" won 11 awards in all, including technical categories announced earlier. Backstage, Blair said he never thought such a result would be possible, "not in my wildest dreams.

London Film Festival 2012: Wish You Were Here Review
Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Kieran Darcy-Smith’s Wish You Were Here is a film that pulls the rug from under our feet right at the outset; a hedonistic montage of all the boozing, pill-popping and reckless abandon that takes place on a holiday to Cambodia is abruptly halted by a jolting cut to Dave (Joel Edgerton), walking shirtless through a desolate field, making the ironic meaning of the film’s title abundantly clear. When Dave and his wife Alice (Felicity Price) return home, it’s obvious that something isn’t right. Alice’s sister Steph (Teresa Palmer) also went on the trip, along with her new husband Jeremy (Antony Starr), who went missing one night and still hasn’t surfaced.

The anxiety-wracked face of Joel Edgerton’s Dave makes us instantly suspicious; did he kill Jeremy? His clandestine behaviour and eventual revelation that he drunkenly slept with Steph in Cambodia...

Kieran Darcy-Smith to Helm Black-Listed Violent Indie, By Way of Helena
Kieran Darcy-Smith made his feature directorial debut this year with Wish You Were Here, the Joel Edgerton-starring drama which will soon be screening at the BFI London Film Festival next month.

Ty thought the film was excellent at its Sundance debut back in January – you can read his review here – and now it looks like Darcy-Smith’s next feature project has been found.

Variety report that the writer-director is attached to direct By Way of Helena, a script from Matt Cook which was voted to the 2009 Black List.

“Story follows a Texas Ranger and his Mexican bride who are sent to investigate a mysterious frontier town where multiple Mexican bodies keep washing up on the riverbank. What they discover is an idyllic community where everything is not as it seems.”

The film is being described as a violent indie that will be produced by Mandeville Films’ David Hoberman (The Fighter,...
