‘Inside Jokes’ Trailer: Amazon Show Follows a Group of Standup Comics on the Verge of Stardom
Neil Berkeley
Like any other job in entertainment, there’s no “right” way to crack the upper tier of standup. But for comics on the rise, a slot in New Faces at the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal certainly helps.

“Inside Jokes,” the upcoming six-episode docuseries from director Neil Berkeley debuting this month on Amazon, takes a look at not just the end result of some of the most coveted slots at the annual comedy gathering, but the long and unpredictable road it takes for so many people to get there.

“The exciting thing about this show is that some of these people are going to be household names. In fact, it’s already happening. But in this show we get to meet them before they’ve had huge success,” Berkeley told IndieWire. “They’re still struggling, trying to make it and doing stand up all night, every night. Imagine seeing...

Amazon Sets Docuseries On Comics Vying For Spot In Just For Laughs Fest
Amazon Studios and the Montreal Just for Laughs Festival are teaming on a docuseries that follows up-and-coming comedians in New York and Los Angeles as they compete to be selected for the New Faces showcase.

Set to stream on Amazon Prime Video, the six-episode untitled series will head to comedy clubs and into the aspiring comics’ lives, showing the highs, lows, frustrations and successes they face as they juggle day jobs, relationships and hecklers in the quest for their biggest break. The comics go through the annual process to get into the coveted New Faces showcase — whose alumni include Kevin Hart, Amy Schumer, Kumail Nanjiani and Jimmy Fallon — beginning with the auditions and callbacks, through selection and into the preparation of their comedy sets. Cameras follow as they write and hone the jokes that they hope will impress the talent scouts, producers and managers who attend Just for Laughs in...

"Inception," "The Social Network" Win Writers Guild Awards! Check Out Complete List of Winners and Nominees!
As soon as we thought we could predict the outcome of the Oscars, here comes another surprise! This one's brought to you by the Writers Guild of America. Picked for Best Original Screenplay was Christopher Nolan's "Inception." The director, famously dissed for not getting a Best Director Oscar nomination, may just win the Best Original Screenplay come Oscar night. Oscar front-runner, "The King's Speech" was not nominated because it didn't quality under union rules which prompted Nolan to say during his WGA acceptance award that he looked forward to a time when he could accept the award "without qualification."

That could be the beginning of a great script Mr. Nolan, go write it :happy

For adapted screenplay, I'm happy to report that Aaron Sorkin's fantastic script won! Based on "The Accidental Billionaires" by Ben Mezrich, "The Social Network" was the only film last year that I predicted to win this very category.

Fey's series, 30 Rock, was handed 22 Emmy nominations this morning, which stands as a record for a comedy series. She and Alec Baldwin were also nominated for acting awards. Plus, for the first time some of the other actors on NBC's laffer were recognized. Jane Krakowski, Jack McBrayer and Tracy Morgan all picked up supporting nominations.

MacFarlane's Family Guy was also nominated for best comedy series, the first time an animated show has cracked that category since The Flintstones in 1961. Two years ago MacFarlane decided to pull his show from contention in the animated series category to have it considered for best comedy.

Mad Men, the drama about the advertising world in the sixties, picked up 16 nominations in the drama categories, including a best actor nod for Jon Hamm. Hamm is also nominated as...
