Tony Slattery of the original U.K. Whose Line is it Anyway? has passed at the age of 65
Image
The comedy improv game show Whose Line is it Anyway? became a big hit in the States in the late 90s. So much so that ABC was confident enough to put up against the sitcom juggernaut Friends at one point. The show continued on with a revival on The CW, but some audiences may remember its origin in the UK that was shown on Channel 4, which also played on Comedy Central before it was remade on this side of the pond. One of the standout comedians in the UK version was British comedian Tony Slattery. Deadline is now reporting that Slattery has died at the age of 65 due to a heart attack.

His passing would be confirmed by his family to the BBC. His partner, Mark Michael Hutchinson, would release a statement that reads, “It is with great sadness we must announce actor and comedian Tony Slattery, aged 65, has passed away today,...

Tim Burton Shuts Down 'A Nightmare before Christmas' Sequel Idea
Image
Every single movie under the sun might be getting a sequel/prequel/reboot, but Tim Burton says he's never returning to his most beloved Christmas movie. Burton was back in theaters earlier this year with the long-awaited Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which saw Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O'Hara return, along with newcomer Jenna Ortega. The film was a box office hit, but divided fans and critics. But the Tim Burton fandom is still strong, and audiences have been desperate for more Jack Skellington and Sally since A Nightmare Before Christmas was released in 1993.

Appearing at the Marrakech International Film Festival (via IndieWire), Tim Burton definitively ruled out any chances of A Nightmare Before Christmas getting a sequel in the future. "There are certain films I don’t want to make a sequel to," the director said. The topic of sequels was undoubtedly on everyone's minds following Beetlejuice Beetlejuice's success.

Joe Biden Fundraiser Co-Hosts Haim Saban And Casey Wasserman Test Positive For Covid; Will Miss L.A. Event — Exclusive
Image
Update: President Joe Biden, speaking to attendees at tonight’s Los Angeles fundraiser, said that Donald Trump “is dragging us back to the past and not leading us to the future.”

In his remarks, which lasted about 15 minutes, Biden presented a contrast between himself and Trump, as donors have been calling for the campaign to sharpen its attacks on the president’s likely rival.

Biden also talked of the death of Alexei Navalny, blaming it on Vladimir Putin. He called it “outrageous” that Trump has not condemned the Russian leader.

Image
What’s this? What’s this? A screening of a Halloween movie at Christmas? While some may believe this live production of Tim Burton’s 1993 musical is three months too late, this evening’s performance proves once and for all that Nightmare Before Christmas is a joyous, raucous and, above all, festive flick. Tonight, famed composer Danny Elfman brings the morbid fairy tale to life, summoning its spirit and spooky ditties at the Ovo Wembley Arena in London where fans, some rocking blue body paint à la Sally, have gathered. Elfman has help. He is joined by original voice cast members Randy Crenshaw, Greg Proops, and the formidable Ken Page as Oogie Boogie, as well as 50-odd musicians courtesy of the BBC Concert Orchestra led by John Mauceri. New to the line-up is Phoebe Bridgers. The 28-year-old Grammy award-winner steps into the shoes of...

Image
Another week, another Friday night ratings demo win for ABC’s Shark Tank. The business entrepreneur reality series took home the crown yet again, scoring an 0.6, down a tenth from last week but still enough to take top honors.

Sharks Mark Cuban, Kevin O’Leary, Lori Greiner, Barbara Corcoran and guest Shark Kendra Scott heard funding pitches for comfortable high heels, food storage, women’s bathing suit issues, and a special sauce company.

The show held an audience for newsmag 20/20, which offered an exclusive interview with just-released murderer Margaret Rudin, who killed her millionaire husband. The show clocked in at an 0.5 to win its perpetual war with NBC’s Dateline.

Fox’s WWE Friday Night SmackDown offered a preview for the annual Elimination Chamber pay-per-view event on Sunday. Friday’s show featured the six participants in Sunday’s Elimination Chamber match on the SmackDown side. It was enough for an 0.5 on the evening score sheet.

After it ended its run on ABC and what was then ABC Family, The CW revived Whose Line Is it Anyway?, with Aisha Tyler hosting the comedy improv series. Considering its age and the fact that it airs on the smallest network, which moved it several times in seasons 11 and 12, its declining ratings make sense. Will Whose Line Is it Anyway? be cancelled or renewed for season 14? Stay tuned. The Whose Line Is it Anyway? TV show features Ryan Stiles, Wayne Brady, and Colin Mochrie improvising, along with a guest comedian in each episode. The cast tests their comedic acumen by participating in improvisational games. At the end of each round, Tyler awards points for their work, and the points don't count. Frequent guests include Brad Sherwood and Greg Proops. Read More…...

Newswire: TCM explores the art of falling down in slapstick comedy series and online course
Over the years, slapstick has become one of the more intellectual branches of comedy. Oh sure, watching a guy get hit and fall down is funny on any level. But it’s also so simple and pure that each gesture can be unpacked and analyzed, just like a good poem. Turner Classic Movies is going to underline that point by airing a month-long tribute called “Ouch! A Salute To Slapstick” that will feature more than 50 films “from silent masters Chaplin, Keaton, and Lloyd to modern master Will Ferrell.” The films will air every Tuesday and Wednesday starting on September 6 for the rest of the month, and the blocks will be hosted—because this is TCM, after all—by comedian Greg Proops.

If all of those movies aren’t enough of an introductory course on slapstick, TCM will also by putting on a literal introductory course through Ball State ...

‘Misery Loves Comedy’ Review
In his directorial debut, Kevin Pollak signs on an impressive roster of actors, comedians, stand-ups, writers, and more, all to come together and answer one of the most dumbfounding questions known comedy lovers everywhere: do you truly have to be miserable in order to be funny?

Actors from Sam Rockwell, Bobby Cannavale, Matthew Perry, Nick Swardson, William H. Macy, Tom Hanks, Maria Bamford, Lisa Kudrow, and more were on film talking about comedy and how they came to it, as were writer/directors Jon Favreau, Kevin Smith, Judd Apatow, Larry David, Marc Maron, Lewis Black, and more. And of course, a large score of comedians were in attendance, such as Jimmy Fallon, Amy Schumer, Martin Short, Whoopi Goldberg, Christopher Guest, Greg Proops, Jimmy Pardo, Penn Jillete, Jim Gaffigan, David Koechner, Kevin Nealon, Rob Delaney, James L. Brooks, Andy Richter. And of course a whole lot more people that offer some...

Whose Line Is It Anyway? on the West End review: Side-splitting nostalgic fun
"The last time I hosted Whose Line Is It Anyway?, we had a Conservative government facing a weak opposition and Chris Evans was all over the telly."

Clive Anderson's opening monologue humorously explains how little has changed in the time that the hit improv show last aired on Channel 4.

Returning for a new run at London's Adelphi Theatre, and borrowing some games from the popular Us version, the stars of the beloved comedy series prove that they still have what it takes to make our sides split with giggles.

Regulars Colin Mochrie, Greg Proops, Josie Lawrence and Brad Sherwood join compere Anderson for the new live show, which has all the ridiculously silly situations and challenges from the original radio and TV shows.

As ever, the random nature of the show is what makes it brilliant, as the comics react quickly to the silly suggestions from the audience,...

YouTube Channel FailArmy’s ‘World’s Funniest Fails’ Premieres On Fox On January 16
After months of prep work and production, Fox and FailArmy are finally releasing their newest TV project. World’s Funniest Fails, inspired by FailArmy’s YouTube channel, will make its debut on the Fox network on January 16, 2015.

The one-hour series hosted by actor Terry Crews will feature popular videos from around the world which are full of blundering and awkward mistakes (thanks to FailArmy’s channel owner Jukin Media, a company which specializes in viral clips). A panel of guest judges will determine which video deserves the title of “worst fail” each week. YouTube’s Mamrie Hart is set to appear as one of the guest judges, as are comedians like Brian Posehn (The Sarah Silverman Program) and Greg Proops (Whose Line Is It Anyway?).

With the help of Jukin and Dick Clark Productions, FailArmy shipped its potential series idea to television networks starting in April 2014. Fox ordered the then-unnamed...

Whose Line Is It Anyway? to return to Edinburgh Fringe
Whose Line Is It Anyway? will be staged at this year's Edinburgh Fringe as a live show.

Clive Anderson will return as host of the new version of the improvisational comedy show, retitled Whose Live Show Is It Anyway?.

Channel 4 regulars Greg Proops and Stephen Frost will appear for the full 14-night run at the Underbelly's McEwan Hall.

Colin Mochrie and Josie Lawrence will be among a rotating line-up throughout its run. Ryan Stiles will not appear, as he has a fear of flying.

Paul Merton and Phill Jupitus have also been approached to participate, according to Chortle.

The show first emerged as a BBC Radio 4 comedy in 1988 with regulars including Stephen Fry and John Sessions. It later transferred to Channel 4, before Us network ABC adapted it to great success.

"I don't want to name names, Anderson said of possible guests. "But I've bumped into three people who...

Hot Docs 2014: 'Harmontown' Review
Within seconds after sitting down to watch "Harmontown," you will notice that the doc is brought to you by "Starburns Industries." For those in the know, the production company is paying homage to one of the bit characters played by Dino Stamatopoulos on the TV show "Community." Those who watch the show will get a lot out of "Harmontown," and there may just be something for everyone else.

Dan Harmon is the comedic genius behind programs like "The Sarah Silverman Show," and the cult pilot one-off "Heat Vision and Jack," but his baby is "Community." The NBC art-sitcom experiment has been a massive underground hit, rewarding endless fanboys and girls with rapid-fire cultural references, endearing nerdy characters and non-stop punchy one-liners. The show is by no means a ratings-getter, and every new season is borne out of a turbulent gestation. Harmon's perfectionist work ethic towards the production and casting of...
