10 Movie & TV Prequels That Were Also Sequels
Image
Prequel stories have become clever ways to explore characters and help audiences understand their world a little bit better, but some sneaky movie and TV show follow-ups have acted as both prequel and sequel. After all, prequels aren't always exclusively dedicated to the past. Sometimes, prequels also include flash-forwards and tidbits of information that help viewers gain a deeper understanding of the future of these characters.

Some films and TV shows act as prequels and sequels, helping to fully round out a universe and add more context to a story. Prequels have been used to rehabilitate popular characters, continue a franchise after a protagonist dies, and help fans better understand a character's behavior. Audiences have complained that prequels are boring because the element of suspense is removed, but adding sequel elements can keep audiences on their toes.

Hocus Pocus 2

Hocus Pocus 2 acts as a sequel and a prequel to the original 1993 movie.

Hocus Pocus 2’s Flashback Still Ignores 30-Year-Old Sanderson Sister Mystery
Image
Hocus Pocus 2's flashback provides insight into the origin story of the Sanderson Sisters, but it leaves out details about their parents' fate. Despite being a box office dud, Hocus Pocus grew into one of Disney's surprising success stories due to nostalgic annual airings. The cut details about the Sanderson Sisters' parents in the original Hocus Pocus film could have explained why they look and act differently.

Hocus Pocus 2's flashbacks provided a thrilling look into the Sanderson Sisters' origin story, but it left out key details into a mystery nearly three decades old. The returns of Winifred, Mary, and Sarah Sanderson were a long time coming. However, it took Disney 29 years to release a sequel to their beloved Halloween hit. Despite being a box office dud when released in 1993, Hocus Pocus grew into one of Disney's most surprising success stories, garnering a loyal fanbase in the years...

"Hocus Pocus 2" Reveals How the Sanderson Sisters First Became Witches
Image
The long-awaited sequel to "Hocus Pocus," "Hocus Pocus 2," is finally here, with the classic Halloween tale getting a new twist for a new generation. While most of the story takes place many years after the original movie, the movie's prologue flashes back over 350 years to answer one lingering question: how did the Sanderson sisters become witches in the first place?

The movie opens in Salem in 1653, where we meet Winnie, Mary, and Sarah as young girls. It's Winnie's 16th birthday, and the other two girls have tried to set up a birthday surprise for her - including, humorously, a 1600s version of Jell-o and a giant spider in a box. Winnie is not in the mood to celebrate, however, as she reveals in disgust that she's been told by the local reverend that she's "getting old" and must marry soon. She's repulsed at the idea of being forced to...

It has been another strange and uncertain year for Hollywood, with the pandemic hitting cinemas hard and streaming services rising to hold the fort. It has also been a year in which we’ve seen a growing diversity in front of, and behind the camera, with an increasing focus on new voices and new stories being told.

Last year saw Bong Joon-ho ‘s Parasite achieve Oscar greatness and, for a brief pre-covid moment, it seemed that the world of cinema was beginning to embrace a wider world. The 2021 BAFTAs showed signs this was continuing with Minari, Another Round and Promising Young Woman taking home a clutch of awards each.

This year’s American Academy Awards will be a strange affair, certainly one to remember.

Here is the full list of nominations with Winners in bold.

2021 Oscars: Best Sound nominees include 2 past champs, 7 veterans and 10 rookies
Image
Ahead of this year’s Oscars, the academy made the decision to merge the Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing categories into one: Best Sound. The films in contention for this new award are “Greyhound,” “Mank,” “News of the World,” “Soul,” and “Sound of Metal.” Our current odds indicate that “Sound of Metal” (31/10) will take the prize, followed in order by “Soul” (39/10), “Mank” (9/2), “Greyhound” (9/2), and “News of the World” (9/2).

The individuals included in the current lineup have amassed a total of 34 nominations for their sound work in 30 films. “Sound of Metal” is the only film of the five that does not include any previous Oscar nominees on its sound team. Its first-time contenders are: Jaime Baksht, Nicolas Becker, Philip Bladh, Carlos Cortés and Michelle Couttolenc.

“Sound of Metal” and “Mank” now hold the distinction of being the first films recognized in a sound category with five credited team members each.

BAFTA Film Awards 2021: ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ Picks Up Two Awards on Opening Night
Image
“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” was the big winner on the opening night of the 2021 BAFTA Film Awards, taking home two golden masks from a possible two.

Night 1, hosted virtually by radio and TV presenter Clara Amfo, was a mostly craft-centered affair which also yielded wins for “Mank,” “Tenet” and “Sound of Metal.”

The first show was originally scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. local time, but according to sources the BBC made a late decision to push the broadcast by an hour. Amfo opened the show by reading a tribute to Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, who died Friday at the age of 99.

“On behalf of BAFTA, we are extremely saddened by the passing of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, on Friday. The Duke was BAFTA’s very first president over 60 years ago and was the first of a line of royal patronage all...

Disney Campaigning to Get Avengers: Endgame a Best Picture Nomination and 11 Other Oscars
Much like Thanos, this was inevitable. Disney has officially launched an awards season campaign for Avengers: Endgame, and they're not just gunning for the technical awards that a blockbuster such as this is likely to receive. Disney is championing the movie for every major award at the Oscars this year, including Best Picture. That may have sounded far crazier even just a year ago, but things have changed.

Disney has launched a for your consideration website for the 2019 awards season. Avengers: Endgame is prominently featured and they're hoping to sway Academy voters to give Thanos and Earth's Mightiest Heroes a shot at the podium later this year. Not only are they putting forth Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and Co. for Best Picture, but they're also suggesting that Joe Russo and Anthony Russo be considered for Best Director, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely for Best Adapted Screenplay and Trent Opaloch for Best Cinematography.
