Twelve years ago, visual effects artist Mike Lé Han put together a two-minute long pitch trailer called Hellraiser: Origins in hopes of getting a chance to direct a film in the Hellraiser franchise. His Hellraiser movie never happened, but Deadline reports that Lé Han is finally getting the chance to direct a psychological horror film of his own with Don’t Look Inside… and he has assembled a strong cast for it. Rachel Nichols, Britt Robertson, Missi Pyle, Nelson Lee and Bruce Davison have all signed on to star in the film, which is expected to head into production in Minnesota sometime this fall.
Plot and character details are being kept under wraps, but Don’t Look Inside is described as an “emotionally charged narrative with chilling, franchise-ready mythology,” in the vein of Talk to Me and Smile. It’s so franchise-ready, a sequel has already been outlined.

Rachel Nichols (P2), Britt Robertson (Tomorrowland), Missi Pyle (Galaxy Quest), Nelson Lee (Civil War), and Bruce Davison (X-Men) will star in Don’t Look Inside, Deadline reports.
The psychological horror film is set to shoot this fall in Minnesota with writer-director Mike Lé Han (Hellraiser: Origins) at the helm.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the movie is described as an “emotionally charged narrative with chilling, franchise-ready mythology” in the vein of Talk to Me and Smile.
“This cast is extraordinary,” said Lé Han. “Their emotional range and commitment to the story gives this film the gravity and intensity it demands. We couldn’t imagine making this film with anyone else.”
Chaos Theory Pictures is producing alongside Lé Han, Todd Slater via his Convoke Media banner, and Brandon Franco at Three Olives Productions.
They hope to launch a franchise with Don’t Look Inside, with a sequel already outlined.

Blumhouse isn’t letting her drink alone; sequel Ma 2 has enlisted Emmy-winner Ashley Nicole Black to write the screenplay, per Deadline.
Octavia Spencer was recently confirmed to return at Blumhouse’s The Business of Fear event.
“Ma has proven to be a social phenomenon since its release in 2019, with fans eagerly embracing the film and Octavia’s iconic performance as Ma. Ma likes to say ‘Don’t make me drink alone,’ so we’re thrilled Octavia will join us again for a second round,” said Blumhouse Founder/CEO Jason Blum.
Spencer played Sue Ann, a loner who keeps to herself in her quiet Ohio town. One day, she is asked by Maggie, a new teenager in town, to buy some booze for her and her friends, and Sue Ann sees the chance to make some unsuspecting, if younger, friends of her own.

Ma, the 2019 psychological thriller starring Octavia Spencer, has become a viral social media sensation ever since the Oscar-winning actress played the obsessive woman that terrorizes a group of teenagers. After more than five years since the film hit theaters, it seems fans' patience has been rewarded.
Per Variety, Blumhouse Productions CEO Jason Blum announced that Octavia Spencer is returning for a sequel to Ma. A viral Blumhouse movie is getting its first sequel after more than half a decade. While Blumhouse movies have taken on a number of different genres including drama (Whiplash), musical (Jem and the Holograms) and more, the production company is best known for its horror movies. In fact, their Top 10 biggest hits are all entries in the horror genre, including the Oscar-winning Jordan Peele movie Get Out, the video game adaptation Five Nights at Freddy's, and the viral smash hit killer doll movie M3GAN.
Blumhouse has also had a hand in establishing multiple major horror franchises including The Purge, Paranormal Activity, and Insidious. Additionally, both M3GAN and Five Nights at Freddy's have sequels set to debut before the end of 2025. The company has also been behind new installments in pre-established franchises in the genre, including a new trilogy of Halloween movies and 2023's The Exorcist: Believer, which will be followed...

Put your hands in the air and wave ‘em like you just don’t care — except we do care a great deal about this news. You'll never have to drink alone again because Ma has officially been given the greenlight for a sequel. It’s been a weirdly long uphill battle (considering the original movie’s budget compared to its earnings), but the time has finally come, with Blumhouse announcing that a follow-up to the iconic 2019 horror movie is on the way. Not only that, but Academy Award-winner Octavia Spencer is set to reprise her role as the titular terror — also known as Sue Ann.
In a statement paired with the announcement, Blumhouse’s founder and CEO, Jason Blum, said,
“Ma has proven to be a social phenomenon since its release in 2019, with fans eagerly embracing the film and Octavia’s iconic performance as Ma. Ma likes to say ‘don’t make me drink alone,...

Two and a Half Men was a rating success for most of its run. That was until Charlie Sheen was fired from the show. Even the usually charming Ashton Kutcher couldn’t save the show when his Walden Schmidt replaced Sheen’s Charlie Harper as the central protagonist. Sheen’s character was killed off in the show.
However, it wasn’t just Charlie Harper who faced the worst fate in the series. The show also did another character dirty during its run. Missi Pyle played the role of Jake’s teacher, Dolores Pasternak, in her first appearance. She gets entangled with Charlie and gets dumped, as usual.

David Fincher's 2014 psychological thriller, Gone Girl, is set to drop on Hulu on April 1.
Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by author Gillian Flynn, Fincher's Gone Girl centers around Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck), a man who becomes the center of a media circus after his wife Amy (Rosamund Pike) disappears on the night of their fifth wedding anniversary. As Nick spends more time in the media spotlight, his apathetic nature and the circumstantial physical evidence against him begin to lead many to believe that Nick isn't as innocent as he proclaims. Flynn, who wrote the bestselling novel, also penned the script for the film, which received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Screenplay.

In perhaps the single most charming scene of For Worse, Lauren (Amy Landecker) shares a cigarette with Dave (Bradley Whitford). The characters are near strangers, tossed together by weird and annoying circumstances. But in that moment, their chemistry feels immediate, loose with warmth and crackling with possibility. It just feels right to see them together; this is the kind of connection rom-coms are built around.
Unfortunately, it comes late enough into the 90-minute movie that when it does arrive, you’re left to wonder why the preceding hour-plus hasn’t had more of this spark. For Worse isn’t all bad; bits of it are intriguing and the rest is too anodyne to get worked up about. But it’s hard to shake the disappointment that this is just an okay movie, when it seems like it should’ve been a good one.

In life, things have to get a lot worse before they can get a little better. In “For Worse,” the versatile and immensely watchable “Transparent” star Amy Landecker’s good-natured narrative feature debut as a writer and director, life gets considerably chaotic for Lauren, a sober and recently divorced West Coast mom trying to give a different direction to her life with her newfound freedom.
It used to be that characters like Lauren — usually defined by that somewhat cringe-inducing and overused “women above a certain age” phrase — were a rarity in cinema. But these days — especially considering several terrific recent releases of all sizes like “Suze,” “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,” “The Idea of You” and even “Babygirl” — we don’t seem to be living in that same cinematic world anymore, one that refused to acknowledge the existence, realities and complex sexual desires of women, well, above a certain age.

After closing out September with a re-do of Jennifer’s Body (listen), a film we covered in one of our earliest episodes, and a discussion of Jonathan Glazer’s controversial Birth (listen), we’re continuing our theme of Anniversary/Diva Worship with a look at David Fincher‘s Gone Girl (2014).
Gone Girl sees Amy Dunne (Rosamund Pike), the inspiration for the beloved series of “Amazing Amy” children’s books, go missing. The prime suspect is her husband Nick (Ben Affleck), though he is as shocked at his wife’s disappearance as the police are.
As the days go by and more clues are unearthed, it becomes clear that Nick isn’t honest as he seems, and that the marriage he had with Amy may not have been as blissful as everyone thought.

"Girl, we are just getting started." Blue Fox Entertainment has unveiled an official trailer for a film titled Empire Waist, the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Claire Ayoub. This just premiered at the 2024 Seattle Film Festival a few months ago, and will open in theaters starting in September this fall. Inspired by the director's own essay "Notes to My Twelve-Year-Old Self," Empire Waist centers on Lenore (starring Mia Kaplan), a highschooler deeply insecure about her weight and desperate to make herself smaller wherever she goes. After a friendship blooms between her & Kayla, an extroverted and confident fellow plus-size teen, Lenore begins stepping outside of her shell and embracing who she really is inside. Despite warnings from her mother—a diet-obsessed woman struggling with her own insecurities—and cruel bullying by the popular crowd at school, Lenore builds up her group of friends who are all dealing with their own obstacles,...

Margaret Cho shines in All That We Love, portraying a character dealing with pet grief in a profound and relatable way. The film explores deep themes of loss, friendship, and redemption, encouraging viewers to embrace empathy and cherish life. Director Yen Tan's personal connection to the story adds authenticity to the film, making it a heartfelt and touching tribute to beloved pets.
All That We Love, which premiered on June 8 at Tribeca Film Festival, is a touching albeit fictionalized tribute to filmmaker Yen Tan's own dearly departed dogs. Legendary comedian Margaret Cho stars as Emma, whose empty nest syndrome grows more pronounced after the death of her dog, Tanner. To top it off, she is dealing poorly with her ex-husband Andy (Kenneth Choi) and the fact that her daughter Maggie (Alice Lee) will soon be moving to Australia.

As Emma (Margaret Cho) grieves her recently deceased dog, her erstwhile coworker Kayla (Missi Pyle) tries to extend a bit of comfort. “My grandma used to say that, once they know they’re yours, they’ll always be with you,” she says. “Even when they’re gone, they’ll find a way to let you know they’re still there.”
It’s the sort of well-meaning, well-worn sentiment that anyone who’s suffered such a tragedy has certainly heard before, and that, depending on the context, might read as trite bullshit or a profound insight. All That We Love takes it as its north star, and turns it into the latter. What could sound on paper like a saccharine sobfest becomes a gentle meditation on love in all its forms, and the grooves it leaves behind even after the objects of our affection have gone.

“All That We Love” is not, at first brush, a lovable film. Or perhaps the midlife crisis meets coming-of-age drama led by Margaret Cho is too lovable and therefore falls flat for its earnestness?
Cho stars as Emma, an empty nester who realizes just how alone she truly is after the death of her family dog Tanner. Emma is frustrated at work, faced with the return of her ex-husband Andy (Kenneth Choi), and forced to confront the fact that her daughter Maggie (Alice Lee) is relocating to Australia with her boyfriend (Devon Bostick). Basically, Emma is having a bad time. The only bright spot in Emma’s social circle, it seems, is her friendship with Stan (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), who is also dealing with a loss of his own…and a crisis reaction that includes purchasing a motorcycle.
As Stan comforts Emma, she begins to reevaluate the (non-canine) relationships in her life.

Galaxy Quest star Missi Pyle would be interested in returning as Laliari. Pyle joins many other cast members who have shared similar desires to reprise their roles. Despite reports of a TV series, there have been limited updates on that and any movie sequels.
Galaxy Quest star Missi Pyle offers a hopeful update on the chances of a sequel after 10 years in development hell. The original 1999 sci-fi comedy is a parody of sci-fi movies and shows. Star Trek's influence is particularly strong in the film, which follows a group of sci-fi show actors who are abducted by aliens after the extraterrestrial race mistakes their fictional show for a documentary. Despite the film's cult status, 25 years have passed without Galaxy Quest 2. However, some of the cast still hold onto hope that it will become a reality.

Karen Gillan is enthusiastic about returning to the Jumanji franchise and the character she plays, finding a personal connection. Gillan expresses a desire to explore more dramatic roles beyond genre movies, despite her love for them. While considering branching out, Gillan has her eye on continuing her involvement in genre films, and would love a role in James Gunn's Dcu.
The future of the Jumanji franchise has been in doubt over the last few years, mainly thanks to the ever-increasing workload of its main stars, but Karen Gillan would love to do more. While speaking to MovieWeb, the actress was asked which of her past franchises she would like to return to, and it seems that she would be happy to reprise almost any of her roles, which, of course, includes the MCU’s Nebula.

"Direct engagement with the camera can add a lot." Lionsgate has unveiled the official trailer for an indie comedy titled The Moon and Back, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Leah Bleich. This initially premiered in 2022 at a few small regional film festivals, and is finally set for a VOD release in April this spring after a two year wait. A year after her father's death, high schooler Lydia Gilbert feels completely lost - until she discovers something: a space opera script in need of a blockbuster budget, written by her father. She picks up an old VHS camcorder and whatever else she can find to try & actually make the movie. A nerdy coming-of-age comedy starring Isabel May as Lydia, along with Nat Faxon, Missi Pyle, P.J. Byrne, and Miles Gutierrez-Riley. Despite the heartfelt story, this film looks rather messy & forgettable. // Continue Reading ›...

It isn’t every day you encounter a pop-disco musical about a buoyant aspiring circus performer and a brooding aspiring rock singer with competing Mommy issues falling in love in Mexico City against the electricized rearrangements of the Indigo Girls. And that’s not exactly lamentable, because I wouldn’t categorize English-language Glitter & Doom as necessarily essential cinema … though I also couldn’t accuse it of being anything other than original either. (Well, except for the foundational premise of opposites attracting and then ultimately clashing over dueling artistic ambitions.) Director Tom Gustafson (Were the World Mine) has crafted a sweet if plodding love story but it’s hard to truly hate on this whirling candy-colored poetic fairytale — it’s just too sincere, much like the musical source material.

Let’s start here: the production design in Tom Gustafson’s Glitter & Doom is impeccable, colorful, and memorable. Too often these days films lack an adventurous color palette. Here we have a welcome outlier. Production designer Geo Martínez breathes life into each frame. Next there’s the music. The film is a musical set to the indelible tunes of the Indigo Girls, the folk-rock duo that became a household name in the late ’80s and early ’90s with hits like “Closer to Fine” and “Galileo.” Without question are music and lyrics the most essential piece of this problematically simple narrative. These artists are long overdue for legacy-laden admiration and celebration.
Now, for some criticism. We have Glitter (Alex Diaz) who wants to be a successful circus performer. We have Doom (Alan Cammish) who wants to be a successful musician. Both are struggling as they tilt at the windmills of their dreams.

It’s been almost exactly 35 years since the Indigo Girls first broke out with their eponymous second album, yet the Power of Two continues to thrive still, especially on the screen. “Barbie” recently pointed us “in a crooked line” with Margot Robbie’s rendition of “Closer to Fine”, while last year’s Sundance doc, titled “It’s Only Life After All“, brought us up close and personal with the duo themselves.
Following those movie tributes now comes another, in the form of “Glitter & Doom,” a jukebox musical that celebrates the enduring legacy that Amy Ray and Emily Saliers have crafted through their raw, passionate, and deeply personal brand of queer folk rock. But does the movie live up to their legendary talents or is it doomed to go the way of a film like “Yesterday“?
