Son of an Irish father serving with the British Army in India, and an Irish-American mother. Born in Jerusalem, where his father was posted at the time, educated at Belvedere College, Dublin. At first intended a legal career. Acted at the Abbey Theatre from 1977 to 1990; in films from 1949 to 1989.

Appeared in two consecutive Stanley Kubrick films, A Clockwork Orange and Barry Lyndon, where both his characters warm up to the troubled, youthful (psychotic or otherwise) main characters.
