Actually, there are many men at work–both on and off screen—in Aan: Men At Work. While the cop-heroes sweat it out in their humid halos, the men behind the scenes also make their presence felt in rapidfire motions in this emotionless pictureshow . No sobbing Matajis(thank God!) but loads of slithering and sliding Mata Haris.
There’s of course director Madhur Bhandarkar, in his first foray into frenzied action. Big guns with bigger nozzles attached to them—of both the human and the mechanical mind—strut around with such exaggerated machismo , it becomes hard to tell the bad and good guys apart. Bhandarkar treats his heroes and villains (all festooned to the plot with formulistic splendour) like characters in an extended videogame for juvenile grownups.

Ashutosh Rana is outstanding in the title role. Based on a real-life character, his portrayal of the eunuch is unique in every sense of the word. Bringing us straight into the twilight zone of the nowhere-people Rana creates spaces in the otherwise-stifling narrative where we see the main character with all her defences down, pouring out her anguish at being forever sidelined, into sequence after sequence showcasing the actor’s amazing power to project his dysfunctional character’s turmoil and coming-to-terms with her space in life.
The film’s narrative format is tragically devoid of aesthetic values. The cinematography, set design, and editing are all done...

What makes this Tamil-to-Hindi adaptation nominally watchable is the way director Jeeva treats the very old and very predictable story of a headstrong boy from a semi-hick town who falls in love in the metro with the coy and simpering sister of a monstrously possessive gangster who, we are told, chops off a boy’s limb for teasing his precious sister.
“Tum ho hi aisi. Would you prefer girls to tease you? Any boy would do what my son did,” says the limbless boy’s hot-blooded dad.
Sanskar, as you can see, isn’t high on this film’s list of priorities. In fact, a whole commodious parallel subplot featuring the insufferably aggressive Vijay Raaz runs through the main love story. Raaz calls his screen dad (Anjan Shrivastava) every name from a boozard to a smelly skunk.

The trouble with cinema on caste and economic oppression is, it makes very oppressive viewing. If we go back in time to notable films on the theme of subjugation, both offbeat and mainstream, we seldom encounter pleasant memories about products from this genre of cinema. While a stray Mother India or Ganga Jumna managed to elevate the subject of oppression into high art, the other raw realistic expositions on the theme like Govind Nihalani’s Aakrosh, Shyam Benegal’s Ankur, Prakash Jha’s Damul and Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen were bitter pills to swallow.
First-time director Gangavihari Boratte paints a bleak picture of our abysmally unequal social order in Lal Salaam, which completed 23 years on May 3. Shot on strikingly green and grim locations...

Unlike Pushpak or Appu Raja, where the leading man’s mythic proportions as a cerebral hero of the masses were used to create protagonists who were rooted to a poignant ground reality, here efforts to locate the everyman-hero into a middle-class milieu are fully farce-sighted.
