John Cena’s 2023's Box Office Flop Is Now One of Netflix’s Most-Watched Titles
Image
Before John Cena returns to the Dcu as Peacemaker this August, fans are tuning in to this action comedy that was not only poorly received by critics but was also a box office flop. Freelance was first released in 2023, and since its recent streaming release, it has found a second chance at success on Netflix, proving that not all films need the theatrical treatment to find success.

According to FlixPatrol, Freelance sat at #3 on Netflix's Top 10 Movies in the United States on August 3, 2023, sitting betweenMy Oxford Year and Kpop Demon Hunters. This feature follows Cena's character, Mason Pettits, a former special forces operative who lands a job that he hates. Things change when he's offered a high-paying private security job for journalist, Claire Wellington (Alison Brie) who's traveling to the fictional South American country of Paldonia to interview its president, Juan Venegas (Juan Pablo Raba). Since its release, Freelance has been a box office flop.

Netflix’s Delirium Cast and Character Guide
Image
The Colombian drama series Delirium, adapted from author Laura Restrepo’s novel of the same name, highlights the psychological ramifications of parental neglect, generational trauma, and repressed emotions through the story of the Londones family. While the narrative focus mainly remains on Agustina Londono and Freddy ‘Midas’ McAlister, as their growth and journey of life are charted in the central plotline, the supporting characters of the series are quite important and unique in their own right. From the moral bankruptcy of aristocracy to class discrimination and themes of identity and sexuality, there is a lot Delirium tries to unpack, and the performance of the talented cast perfectly captured the intended conflicts and nuances.

Agustina Londono, played by Estefania Pineres

Colombian actor/screenwriter Estefania Pineres has gained acclaim for her writing in ventures like Mu-ki-ra Color-ido, Misteriosa, Choco, etc. She has also gained recognition through her acting performances in Netflix’s Wild District,...

Delirium Review: Great Performances Lost in a Narrative Fog
Image
Delirium pitches a non-linear narrative as a reflection of its protagonist’s shattered mind, a technique that television loves but rarely perfects. The show jumps between timelines with the frenetic energy of a channel surfer: here is the present, with professor Aguilar trying to solve the mystery of his wife; here is the recent past, with their dizzying romance; and here are her teenage years, a bleak landscape of family dysfunction and a first love with a boy named Midas.

In prestige TV, this kind of structural gambit is meant to deepen theme and character, allowing past events to inform present actions in revelatory ways. But here, the constant shifting often serves only to obscure basic plot mechanics. Instead of creating a mosaic, it feels like shuffling a deck of cards and dealing them out of order. The idea is to put us inside Agustina’s head, but the result...

Stars: Frank Grillo, Eden Brolin, Melissa Leo, Andy Garcia, Mekhi Phifer, Beau Knapp, George Carroll, Josh Hutcherson, Juan Pablo Raba | Written by John Swab, Santiago Manes Moreno | Directed by John Swab

Long Gone Heroes is an action thriller directed by John Swab, this being his fifth collaboration with the always-awesome Frank Grillo. As well as boasting some more notable cast including, Josh Hutcherson, Eden Brolin, Melissa Leo, Andy Garcia, and Mekhi Phifer. Set against the politically volatile backdrop of Venezuela, it follows a former special forces soldier, Gunner (Grillo), who is drawn back into action to rescue his kidnapped niece, Julia (Brolin), a journalist entangled in a web of corruption involving oil smuggling, private military contractors, and high-level political figures. Liam Neeson's 'The Marksman' Is Surprisingly Accurate in One Specific Way
Image
While Liam Neeson remains a compelling big-screen presence, Neeson’s action-hero persona has become increasingly derivative over the past decade. The standard Neeson action vehicle has Neeson playing a reluctant avenger or hero who employs a specific set of skills to neutralize his enemies and protect the people whom he cares about. Neeson has now acted within this formula for approximately 15 years, ever since the box-office success of the first Taken film changed the trajectory of Neeson’s career.

This formula is embodied most clearly in the 2021 action film The Marksman, in which Neeson plays a widowed Arizona rancher and former United States Marine Corps sniper who agrees to help a young boy escape a Mexican drug cartel. While The Marksman is mediocre and predictable in virtually every respect, the film is most distinguished in terms of how clearly Neeson’s character’s military sniper training is visible in Neeson’s performance,...

Liam Neeson's 'The Marksman' is Free to Stream on Tubi
Image
Liam Neeson has spent much of the last decade inhabiting relentless action roles, and among them was the 2021 movie, The Marksman. Although the film did not set the world alight four years ago, and was mostly panned by critics, like many other Neeson movies, the film is now finding a lot of love streaming for free on Tubi.

The Marksman takes place on the border of Arizona and Mexico, with Neeson playing Jim Hanson, an ex-Marine turned rancher struggling with debts and his life of mundane routine. Things take a dramatic turn when he becomes the protector of a young boy called Miguel, who comes across the Mexican border, fleeing a dangerous drug cartel. Director Robert Lorenz delivers a grounded story with a brutal flair, as the film charts Jim’s attempts to take Miguel to safety in Chicago, while being constantly hounded by the cartel.

10 Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Characters Every MCU Fan Should Know
Image
Long before Disney+ was created, ABC's superhero drama Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was the Marvel Cinematic Universe's foothold in the world of television. Picking up after The Avengers, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. see a mysteriously resurrected Phil Coulson lead a ragtag group of operatives. The early seasons feature occasional cameos from MCU characters like Nick Fury, Maria Hill, Jasper Sitwell, and Peggy Carter.

As the show continues, the familiar faces dwindle and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. focus on building its own array of impressive heroes and villains. With the MCU beginning to integrate characters from its other forgotten gems, there are plenty of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. characters primed to make the leap to the big time.

10 Underused Agents Of Shield Characters We Hope Appear In The MCU
Image
Marvel Studios has the opportunity to reinvent many underused characters from Agents of Shield in the MCU proper. Between its 2013 premiere and 2020 finale, Marvel Television's Agents of Shield introduced many brilliant characters into live-action, both those adapted from Marvel Comics and those created specifically for the ABC series. While characters such as Phil Coulson, Melinda May, Daisy Johnson and FitzSimmons got plenty of attention, several others unfortunately fell under the radar, never getting the chance to show their full potential.

Agents of Shield's seven seasons did their best to tie into the McU's official timeline, particularly in its early days, as it connected Marvel movies including The Avengers, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Age of Ultron. This suggested that characters who debuted in Agents of Shield could have appeared on the big-screen, but this never occurred. Instead, Agents of Shield appears to have been de-canonized,...

Image
Stars: Frank Grillo, Eden Brolin, Melissa Leo, Andy Garcia, Mekhi Phifer, Beau Knapp, George Carroll, Josh Hutcherson, Juan Pablo Raba | Written by John Swab, Santiago Manes Moreno | Directed by John Swab

Long Gone Heroes marks the fifth collaboration between director John Swab and actor Frank Grillo beginning with Body Brokers and most recently One Day as a Lion. They might not be great cinema, but they’ve been well enough received, and more importantly, they’ve proven popular enough that they keep getting money to make more of them.

This time out, Grillo plays Gunner, ex-special forces, ex-husband, and all the other usual exes. His niece Julia is a journalist working on a story about a group violating US sanctions and bringing Venezuelan oil into the country. This gets her grabbed by some very dangerous people.

Complicating matters further is that her mother Olivia is not only a US senator,...

Liam Neeson's Fan-Favorite Western The Marksman Is Streaming for Free
Image
Quick Links The Marksman Is a High-Stakes Modern Western The Marksman Is Beloved by Audiences The Marksman Was Despised by Critics

72-year-old Irish actor Liam Neeson is known worldwide for his action roles, notably the Taken saga, where he has to relentlessly save a loved one taken from him by criminals. However, his extensive filmography also includes some dramas, such as his breakout role in Schindler's List, romantic comedies including Love Actually as a recent widower, and even musicals like Les Misrables where he plays soft-at-heart convict Jean Valjean.

What Neeson is less known for, though, is Westerns. Though the multi-faceted actor has dipped his toes in many genres, he's not necessarily known for starring in Westerns, though he has been in a few. Exceptions can be counted on one hand: Seraphim Falls (2006), A Million Ways to Die in the West (2014), The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018), The Marksman (2021), In the Land of Saints and Sinners...

As she becomes part of their luxurious world, she witnesses the collapse of the marriage between Guillermo (Raba), an investor, and Claudia (Cepeda), a former beauty queen. ‘Freelance’ DVD Review
Image
Stars: John Cena, Alison Brie, Juan Pablo Raba, Christian Slater, Alice Eve, Marton Csokas, Sebastian Eslava | Written by Jacob Lentz | Directed by Pierre Morel

Freelance, the latest film from WWE star turned actor John Cena, delivers an engaging mix of action and comedy, elements that Cena has increasingly become known for. Directed by Pierre Morel, this film pairs Cena with Alison Brie in a fast-paced narrative that explores themes of survival and unexpected camaraderie.

In Freelance, Cena plays an ex-special forces operative who is lured out of retirement to protect a journalist (played by Alison Brie) on an assignment in a war-torn country. What begins as a seemingly straightforward protection detail quickly spirals into chaos as they find themselves embroiled in a political conspiracy, forcing them to rely on each other and their wits to stay alive.

Cena’s portrayal of a seasoned, yet somewhat jaded, operative showcases his growing versatility as an actor.

Freelance review – John Cena fun in kind of pulpy action-comedy Arnie used to make
'photo by Matthew Kristall for The Sunday Times Style Magazine'
Cena and Alison Brie bring the genre up to date, with the pair comically adept enough to rescue this rescue mission from being a lame duck

This haphazard comedy-action film mostly plays like the script was written on the discarded roach of a smoked joint, but the likability of the cast makes up for a lot. WWE champ turned thespian John Cena, who always seems to know how weird he looks with his swollen torso and tiny hips, stars as soldier-turned-lawyer family man Mason Pettits. Having never got over the trauma of a mission that turned sour in the lamely named fictional Latin American nation of Paldonia, Mason nurses a sense of failure that’s undermining his marriage to wife Jenny as they try to raise a young daughter (Molly McCann) together.

One day, former comrade in arms Sebastian now running a security company, offers Mason a one-off gig protecting...

Pierre Morel at an event for From Paris with Love (2010)
Freelance review – John Cena and Alison Brie battle stereotypes in crude action-comedy
Pierre Morel at an event for From Paris with Love (2010)
Cena and Brie display zero chemistry a dumb adventure yarn set in a fictional South American state. It feels like it should be a satire of the genre, but isn’t

Taken director Pierre Morel gets it really, really wrong with this dumb, crude and not remotely entertaining action-comedy. The idea isn’t too bad: it’s about a former US special forces soldier who gets caught up in a South American coup after being hired as bodyguard to a journalist. You can picture Armando Iannucci running with the satirical possibilities, or a more serious-minded film-maker wading knee-deep into moral murk, John le Carré style. Instead, Morel, working with a script by Jacob Lentz, squanders the basic concept – not to mention the gym time that wrestler-turned-actor John Cena put in to get the upper body of a Greek god.

Cena plays Mason Pettits, a military veteran struggling with post-army life...

John Cena And Alison Brie's New Movie Just Tanked At The Box Office
Image
One would be forgiven for having absolutely no idea that a new action/comedy starring Jon Cena and Alison Brie hit theaters this past weekend. "Freelance" did, indeed, arrive in more than 2,000 theaters and was straight-up buried by the horror sensation that is "Five Nights at Freddy's." It would be one thing for a movie to come in second -- or even third place -- against a blockbuster release like that. Unfortunately for those behind this film, however, it barely made it into the top 10.

Relativity Media's "Freelance" opened to just $2 million, coming in at number eight on the charts for the weekend, per The Numbers. It made less than "The Nightmare Before Christmas" ($2.1 million), which is in the second weekend of its 30th anniversary re-release, and little more than "Saw X" ($1.7 million), which has been in theaters for five weekends. The worst news of all? Cena and Brie's...

John Cena's New Comedy's Rotten Tomatoes Score is No Laughing Matter
Image
John Cena and Alison Brie's new film, Freelance, is off to a rough start. Despite a talented starring duo, the film currently holds a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Directed by Pierre Morel, known for his work on Taken, Freelance follows an ex-special forces operative (Cena) who takes a job to provide security for a journalist (Brie) as she interviews the dictator (Juan Pablo Raba) of a fictional country named Paldonia. A military coup breaks out in the middle of the interview, and they are forced to escape into the jungle, where they must survive.

Along with the major complaints from critics is that the film – described as a comedy – is just not funny. Collider's Ross Bonaime writes:

"The action is never exciting, the jokes never land, and the pacing is all over the place. Freelance takes an absurd amount of time to get going, as it slogs through...

Freelance Review | Action-Comedy Falls Flat Despite John Cena's Starpower
Image
Freelance starts off strong with dark comedy and a gritty tone, but falls victim to conventional filmmaking and lacks genuine laughs. John Cena's comedic timing and facial reactions to Venegas' antics are the best parts of the film. The movie feels harmless and kid-friendly, missing opportunities for raunchy fun and gritty violence that audiences may have expected.

With both a hard R-rating and wrestler-turned-Hollywood star John Cena and bombshell comedic genius Alison Brie involved in the new film Freelance, it's fair to expect gritty violence laced with dark and sexy humor, like if Rush Hour had a less kid-friendly MPAA rating. The Deadpool franchise comes to mind as an example, or even The Nice Guys. And the new action-comedy from Taken director Pierre Morel is rated R for "violence and language," though it probably could even have been rated PG, if the occasional blood spatter or F-words were omitted.

John Cena's New Action Comedy Debuts To Rare 0% On Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Freelance, which stars John Cena and Alison Brie, has debuted to a 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes with 15 reviews. This score could change as more reviews are released. This marks Cena's second critically-panned movie in a row after Vacation Friends 2. Critics take issue with just about every aspect of Freelance, claiming it has no comedy to speak of, poor action scenes, and no chemistry between its lead actors.

Freelance, the new action comedy starring John Cena, has debuted to a dismal 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. Directed by Pierre Morel (Taken), Freelance stars Cena as an ex-special forces soldier tasked with protecting a journalist, played by Community's Alison Brie, after a violent coup breaks out during her interview with a South American dictator. Freelance: New John Cena & Alison Brie Movie Receives Abysmal Score on Rotten Tomatoes
Image
John Cena's newest movie is not being received well by critics.

Freelance, which also stars Alison Brie and Juan Pablo Raba, currently has a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes with 14 reviews. The critics who have reviewed the film tore into it. Barry Hertz of Globe and Mail stressed that Cena deserves better than the latest directorial effort of Pierre Morel, who previously helmed Taken (2008), while Derek Smith of Slant Magazine referred to Freelance as "a cinematic Frankenstein." The movie does not yet have an audience score.

'Freelance' Review — John Cena & Alison Brie Get Lost in Weak Action-Comedy
Image
Freelance begins with disappointment. In a montage awkwardly told in first-person, John Cena’s Mason Pettits laments that he knows exactly what he’s been put on this world to do, and yet, he hasn’t been able to do it. After becoming a lawyer and hating it, Mason quit to become a special forces operative, where he soon went on a mission to assassinate President Juan Venegas (Juan Pablo Raba) of Paldonia that left him injured and with half of his team dead. Now, Mason is trapped in the “nightmarish” existence he feared: he’s a lawyer, living a suburban life with his wife (an almost nonexistent Alice Eve), and his loving daughter. It doesn’t take long into Freelance for us to realize that we begin to feel like Mason, as we know this absolutely isn’t the type of garbage John Cena should be doing.

‘Freelance’ Review: John Cena and Alison Brie Are Lost in the Would-Be Hijinks of a Drab Jungle Adventure
Image
The specific fantasy that Freelance is tapping into is probably as old as the concept of American masculinity itself. The action comedy, directed by Pierre Morel (Taken), centers on a middling suburban lawyer (John Cena) with a profound and unshakable understanding that this is not what he’s meant for. He’s meant to be a good guy, a hero, a super-jacked soldier who dives headfirst into danger; in fact he was that guy once, until a back injury ended his military career.

Though the film follows Cena’s Mason to South America and back, really its central journey is Mason’s back to the manly man he’s been inside all along. But even the most cherished daydream needs a bit of skill and finessing if it’s to translate to the big screen, and that’s where Freelance falls fatally short — yielding not an uplifting escape, but an enervating bore.

Pierre Morel at an event for From Paris with Love (2010)
Freelance Review: An Action-Comedy Misfire
Pierre Morel at an event for From Paris with Love (2010)
Pierre Morel’s Freelance follows disgraced American journalist Claire Wellington (Alison Brie) and her ex-military bodyguard, Mason Pettits (John Cena), as he escorts her to the fictional South American country of Paldonia for an exclusive interview with its dictator, Juan Venegas (Juan Pablo Raba). While the film starts out by presenting Paldonia and its leader as unrepentantly evil—among other things, we’re told that Venegas is responsible for the deaths of half of Pettits’s former squad years earlier—it eventually reveals that various imperialist forces and corporate-funded mercenary groups have been actively undermining Venegas as a means of forcing him to sell valuable natural resources for a cheaper rate.

That’s a surprising turn of events, especially for an action-comedy, given Hollywood’s typically simplistic representations of under-developed countries whose conditions are presented as justification for American intervention. Regrettably, that’s the only surprise to be found in Jacob Lentz’s screenplay,...

Freelance Review
Image
Plot: A former special forces operative (John Cena) turned family man lawyer is tempted by an old friend to take a job as a bodyguard for a famous journalist (Alison Brie) who’s set to interview a dictator.

Review: Pierre Morel will forever be celebrated as the director who turned Liam Neeson into an action star. His movie, Taken, remains (by a long shot) the best movie in that franchise. Now, Morel is dipping his toe into a different genre, the action-comedy. While Freelance has some well-conceived action sequences and a game cast, there’s a big problem – the movie isn’t funny.

Indeed, Cena can be hilarious, given the right material. He has a twinkle in his eye that makes him personable despite his hulking physique, with Blockers an excellent example of that. But he feels like the wrong fit for this. Given that the premise seems to promise...
