Jarann in Marathi, is leaden with atmospheric pressure. It is almost as if writer-director Hrishikesh Gupte wants us to believe in the supernatural, but doesn’t know how to go beyond that creaky door. So we have lots of startle-the-audience moments, but nothing beyond that.

I still don’t know why the protagonist is allowed by her family to behave the way she does. That Radha (Amruta Subhash) is seriously traumatized by a road accident which takes away the life of one of her dear ones, is the ground-level drama. But what follows is not only unconvincing, it also, perhaps, unintentionally, ridicules the whole concept of mental illness, particularly schizophrenia where the ill individual sees people that others can’t.

The last time I saw mental illness being so insensitively handled was in Aanand Rai’s Atrangi Re. There, at least the tone was comic, so we could dismiss the inaccuracies on mental health.

Taxing Situation

The Philippines is to impose a 12% value-added tax on overseas digital service providers operating in the country, including Netflix, HBO and Disney. The measure was signed into law on Wednesday by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

“If you are reaping the rewards of a fruitful digital economy here, it is only right that you contribute also to its growth,” Marcos said in a speech during the signing event. The new law will level the taxes paid by local businesses and international digital platforms, he added, according to reporting by Bloomberg.

The new law covers online search engines, media, advertising, platforms as well as digital marketplaces and goods and cloud services. The tax is forecast to generate 79.5 billion pesos ($1.4 billion) in revenue in the next four years, according to the country’s finance department.

Streaming platforms like Netflix are often accused of being the dumping ground for movies that were meant for theatrical release but then the distributors and the producers backed out because they thought it wouldn’t be a profitable venture. How can you tell if a made-for-theater movie is being dumped for streaming? According to the latest government records, over five thousand people have died between 2017 and 2022 due to road accidents caused by potholes. An issue that everyone notices on a day-to-day basis but nobody seems to protest against. Palash Mucchal’s Kaam Chalu Hai portrays the real-life story of Manoj Patil, who dedicated his life to filling potholes after his daughter passed away because of one.

What happens in the movie?

Kaam Chalu Hai‘s story takes place in the small town of Sangli, Maharashtra. Manoj and his daughter Gudiya are best friends, as they are kept in line by Manoj’s wife, Radha. Radha is strict, but only because someone has to be an adult in the house. The family has their fair share of issues, but that doesn’t stop them from loving and caring for each other. Manoj dreams of making Gudiya a cricketer who’ll represent India someday.

Actor Manit Joura has opened up on playing the complex character Yug in the show ‘Pyaar Ka Pehla Naam Radha Mohan’, and the preparations involved in depicting the character’s extreme mood swings and intensity.

Following a recent seven-year leap, the storyline steers into uncharted territories for Radha and Mohan, played by Neeharika Roy and Shabir Ahluwalia, respectively.

The star-crossed lovers are no longer together. Radha is seen in an all-new avatar, living as Radhika Kohli in South Delhi along with her son Manan and husband Yug Kohli (played by Manit), in a world detached and distant from Mohan’s reality.

In recent episodes, viewers have observed a noticeable shift in Yug’s behaviour. From a loving, caring husband to a totally unhinged person, leaving viewers worried for Radha.

While he initially came off as a ‘green flag’, Yug has begun demonstrating streaks of controlling behaviour, possessiveness, and toxic chauvinism.

Talking about the shooting, Shriya, who is known for her work in ‘Drishyam’ said: “So, also while we were shooting this show, it was a very tough time for me personally because my daughter had burned her hand, and I was like a reckless case. But somehow acting and coming back to a set kind of calmed me down because otherwise I was emotionally very, very stressed.”

“And the show is also very interesting. It has a lot going on. There’s a lot of undercurrents going on. Like every scene has a backstory,” she added.
