“Jarann , Amruta Subhash Anchors An Absurd Horror Tale” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Jarann in Marathi, is leaden with atmospheric pressure. It is almost as if writer-director Hrishikesh Gupte wants us to believe in the supernatural, but doesn’t know how to go beyond that creaky door. So we have lots of startle-the-audience moments, but nothing beyond that.

I still don’t know why the protagonist is allowed by her family to behave the way she does. That Radha (Amruta Subhash) is seriously traumatized by a road accident which takes away the life of one of her dear ones, is the ground-level drama. But what follows is not only unconvincing, it also, perhaps, unintentionally, ridicules the whole concept of mental illness, particularly schizophrenia where the ill individual sees people that others can’t.

The last time I saw mental illness being so insensitively handled was in Aanand Rai’s Atrangi Re. There, at least the tone was comic, so we could dismiss the inaccuracies on mental health.

Spotlight: Nargis Much More To Her Than Mother India
Image
Subhash K Jha shines the spotlight on Nargis the reel and the real her in this special feature.

There were so many facets to the iconic Nargis Dutt .

I once remember her son Sanjay telling me, “Others knew her as the joyous, generous, large-hearted woman. For the world, she was Mother India. For me, she was my mom. Yeah, she pampered me silly. She would deny me nothing. Dad was the disciplinarian. For me, she was…everything.”

When we think of Nargis, we think immediately of Mehboob Khan’s Mother India. It is to Nargis’ career what Sholay was to Amjad Khan. Nothing that Nargis did thereafter could compare favourably with Mother India.

Indeed, Nargis in Mother India is a marvel of Nature. She was only 28 when she played mother to Sunil Dutt and Rajendra Kumar so convincingly. To take such a bold risk of playing a mother so early...

Revisiting Shah Rukh-Salman-Madhuri’s Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam
Image
Subhash K Jha turns the focus on Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam, which featured the epic cast of Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Madhuri Dixit, that released in 2002.

The love triangle about a jealous husband(Shah Rukh Khan), his devoted wife (Madhuri Dixit), and a supportive friend (Salman Khan) who’s mistaken for the wife’s lover by her husband, seeks inspiration from a 1974 Rajesh Khanna-Mumtaz-Sanjeev Kumar starrer Aap Ki Kasam. In Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam, the ornate packaging, top-heavy star cast, and the outmoded conventions of marital obligations and fidelity had the film trade very worried.

Though Madhuri hadn’t had much luck with Shah Rukh, she had a historic hit Hum Aapke Hain Koun with Salman Khan.

The film wasn’t only crucial for the doddering fortunes of multi-starrers but also for producer K.C. Bokadia, whose career fell on hard times in the 1990s after a couple...

This 68-Year-Old Epic Is Still One of the Greatest International Films of All Time.
Image
Over a half a century after its release, Mother India (released in 1957) remains one of the most important international films of all time. The groundbreaking film made it to the Academy Awards and eventually bagged a nomination in the Best International Film category, only to lose the prize to Federico Fellini by just one vote, who took the Golden Statue for Nights of Cabiria. Despite facing defeat at the Oscars, this social epic became one of the greatest international films of all time. But what makes it endure?

The director, Mehboob Khan, made a film deeply embedded in a specific cultural context. The setting of the movie was rooted in rural India, showing the brutal reality faced by the poor of the nation. However, there were a lot of elements in the film that resonated with the audience worldwide. The plight of the working class, the unflinching portrayal of struggle,...

These Women Regaled… Top 10 Women Characters In Bollywood
Image
In this amazing list, Subhash K Jha reveals his choice for the top 10 female characters in Bollywood.

Nargis’ Radha in Mehboob Khan’s Mother India(1957):

Nargis played Radha, the deserted wife who brings up her two sons on her own and kills one of them when he turns into an outlaw. For the first time in a Hindi film, the female protagonist was portrayed as strong, resilient, conscientious, and doughty without losing her femininity. Nargis won both national and international awards.

Meena Kumari’s Choti Bahu in Guru Dutt’s Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962): In the feudal household where women were content wearing expensive sarees and jewellery and never mind what their husbands did with other women, this wife dared to raise her voice. If her husband liked to drink, no problem. Choti Bahu hit the bottle to have him stay at home. The portrait of a woman...

Image
Ram Gopal Varma Recalls The Sholay 2 Idea Pitched By Sascha Sippy (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Ram Gopal Varma is one of Bollywood’s most famous directors, best known for movies like Rangeela and Satya. However, he was also behind Rgv Ki Aag, a 2007 remake of perhaps the most iconic Indian film, Sholay. Despite the vision of Varma and a star cast of Mohanlal, Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgn, and Sushmita Sen, the film was a commercial and critical flop. However, Varma has now revealed that this was not the only movie in which he would incorporate the elements of Sholay.

Speaking to Galatta India, the maverick filmmaker revealed that Sascha Sippy, nephew of Sholay director Ramesh Sippy, once pitched the idea of a sequel centered around Gabbar Singh’s son. Furthermore, Sippy also wanted to cast Jackie Chan in a role for the movie. However, the concept didn’t sit well with Rgv,...

Upcoming Film Kaktarua Explores Surveillance, Resistance, and Self-Discovery
Image
The forthcoming Bengali film “Kaktarua“, directed by Yudhajit Basu and Prithvijoy Ganguly, promises to weave a thought-provoking narrative of resistance and self-discovery. Set in a timeless rural village in Bengal, “Kaktarua” (meaning “scarecrow”) delves into themes of totalitarianism, familial bonds, and the lingering impact of authoritarian rule.

The story follows Radha, a young woman who returns to her ancestral village of Pakhi to search for her mother’s lost wedding ring—a token of love from her father, who mysteriously disappeared before her birth. However, her journey takes an unexpected turn when she discovers Pakhi is under the iron grip of a quasi-military group known as “The Red Ants,” whose surveillance network has stifled the village. With the villagers living in constant fear and many children held hostage, Radha encounters three rebellious kids who plan to overthrow the regime by destroying its underground hub, hidden beneath a scarecrow.

The directors...

There are all kinds of stories coming out of Punjab these days, as mentioned in several articles before. Kohrra, Tabbar, Cat, Chamak, and the latest one, which received audience acclaim, Amar Singh Chamkila. Wild Wild Punjab, directed by Simarpreet Singh, is the story of four friends who, on the way to confront the ex-girlfriend of one of them, find themselves in a lot of trouble.

‘Wild Wild Punjab’ Netflix Review: The Road Trip Comedy Movie Is Unfunny, Loud, And Exhausting
Image
Streaming platforms like Netflix are often accused of being the dumping ground for movies that were meant for theatrical release but then the distributors and the producers backed out because they thought it wouldn’t be a profitable venture. How can you tell if a made-for-theater movie is being dumped for streaming? Well, made-for-theater movies start with the animated production logo video and a short or long list of people that the makers want to thank; straight-to-streaming films don’t have that. Anyway, I believe that every movie should be released in theaters because you never know whether or not it’ll find an audience and rake in an unexpected amount of money. I also believe that films should get a theatrical release, even if it’s a limited one, because every filmmaker wants their film to be projected on the biggest possible screen instead of being used as background noise.

15+1 Iconic Asian Films Throughout the History of the Academy Awards
Image
In 1929, the Academy Awards were established by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to celebrate global excellence in the film industry. While it had its fair share of detractors over the years, the Academy has managed to navigate through the mire of controversies, especially the touchy topic of racial and cultural representation (case in point: #OscarsSoWhite movement), to stay relevant throughout its illustrious history.

Asian Films have been honoured starting with the 19th edition of the Awards when they were first given as a special honorary prize for the Best Foreign Film released in the USA. Nine years later, the prize became a competitive one and a winner was chosen from within a pool of predominantly non-English nominees.

Seven illustrious motion pictures from within Asia have clinched this top honour but many others, some of which are amongst the most iconic of Asian cinema, have been nominated and acknowledged as well.
