'Fright Night' at 40: Fans Celebrate the Vampire Classic on Social Media
Image
When it comes to the best vampire movies ever made, there are a few that automatically make everyone's Top 10 list. The Lost Boys, Near Dark, From Dusk Till Dawn, and Dracula easily come to mind, and rightfully so. They're generational classics that left an indelible mark on the horror genre. Among them all, however, is a 1985 classic that recently celebrated its 40th anniversary that to this day remains one of the best, as is evident by fans taking to social media to mark the occasion.

Released on August 2, 1985, Fright Night came along at a time when vampires were experiencing a lull at the cinema. Audiences had grown tired of the Hammer films of the 60s and 70s, and while Tony Scott tried to breathe new life into them with The Hunger in 1983, it wasn't until a couple of years later that vampires became hip again thanks to writer/director Tom Holland.

‘The Barn Part III’ Exclusive Poster Reveal + Felissa Rose & More Horror Icons Join the Cast
Image
Indie fan favorites The Barn and The Barn Part II, both of which are now streaming on Screambox, celebrated Halloween in throwback style, and the success of those films has paved the way for The Barn Part III. Director Justin Seaman is now raising finishing funds for the project over on Indiegogo, and Bloody Disgusting has the exclusive poster reveal.

Additionally, we’ve learned that horror icons Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp), William Ragsdale (Fright Night) and John Kassir (“Tales from the Crypt”) have joined The Barn Part III.

The Barn Part III is set to be the final chapter of the Halloween horror franchise, and Seaman says it’s going to be “a little bit more serious” than the previous two installments. He teases, “Of course we’re going to have monsters killing and splattering guts everywhere, but the stakes are a little higher. We’re going to wrap this...

The Barn (2016)
The Barn Part III: retro slasher sequel adds John Kassir, the voice of the Cryptkeeper, to the cast
The Barn (2016)
Eight years have passed since writer/director Justin M. Seaman brought us the 1989-set slasher The Barn (check out my review Here, get the movie Here). A sequel has followed in that time, and now Seaman is working on wrapping up the trilogy with a film appropriately titled The Barn Part III. The Barn and The Barn Part II (get that one Here) featured genre icons like Ari Lehman (who played young Jason Voorhees in the original Friday the 13th), legendary scream queen Linnea Quigley, drive-in movie critic Joe Bob Briggs, Diana Prince (a.k.a. Darcy the Mail Girl), Troma’s own Lloyd Kaufman, and Hellraiser star Doug Bradley. The Barn Part III is also going to feature some familiar faces, as we’ve previously heard that the cast includes Children of the Corn‘s Courtney Gains and Kelli Maroney of Night of the Comet and Chopping Mall. Fright Night (1985)
Fright Night writer/director Tom Holland teams with author Michael Harbron for a prequel novel
Fright Night (1985)
2025 marks the 40th anniversary of the release of the classic vampire movie Fright Night, and to celebrate, the film’s writer/director Tom Holland is teaming up with bestselling author Michael Harbron to send an official prequel novel out into the world! Also simply titled Fright Night, the novel is set to be released in October.

While Fright Night received a novelization that was written by John Skipp and Craig Spector at the time of the film’s release, Holland and A. Jack Ulrich wrote a different novelization, an “expanded version,” called Fright Night: Origins a few years ago. Harbron’s Fright Night prequel novel is set before the Fright Night: Origins story, exploring events that unfolded during a gritty and culturally explosive Manhattan in the 1970s. It takes a bold, atmospheric approach – fusing the pulpy charm of the original with immersive world-building and classic Americana horror.

Harbron is...

Fright Night Part 2 (1988) is getting a 4K Uhd and Blu-ray release
Image
Last year, Synapse Films and Red Shirt Home Video teamed up to bring us a deluxe edition Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release of the 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat, one of my all-time favorite movies. Now Synapse and Red Shirt have announced that they’ll also be giving the deluxe edition treatment to the 1988 vampire sequel Fright Night Part 2! A lot of fans have resorted to buying bootlegs just to have a good copy of this movie on DVD, but now it’s getting an official 4K Uhd and Blu-ray release. According to Red Shirt’s Michael Felsher, it’s likely to be released sometime in 2026.

Directed by Tommy Lee Wallace, who takes over from the first film’s Tom Holland, and scripted by Tim Metcalfe, Miguel Tejada-Flores, and Wallace, Fright Night Part 2 features young Charley Brewer, fresh out of a psychiatric hospital, and the...

After working their magic to bring Trick or Treat to 4K Ultra HD, Red Shirt Pictures and Synapse Films have announced six upcoming titles in the works.

The releases include: Fright Night Part II, Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II, Prom Night III: The Last Kiss, Prom Night IV: Deliver Us from Evil, 976-Evil II, and Angel of H.E.A.T.

“There are no release dates for any of these titles at this time,” Synapse writes, noting that Fright Night Part II will not be out in 2025.

“We can’t even say ‘Still in production. No release date.’ because several of them have not started production yet! Just as it was with Trick or Treat, Red Shirt Pictures will be overseeing the production of each release, while Synapse will oversee the audio/video and distribution of each title, all of which will be in production throughout 2025 and into 2026.”

Children of the Vampire: Horror’s Many Returns to ‘Salem’s Lot’ Over the Years
Image
Warning: The following contains minor spoilers for various adaptations of Salem’s Lot.

In addition to character-driven novels and disturbing horror, Stephen King is known for writing folksy stories set in the rural Northeast. His bestselling It takes place in Derry, a close approximation to Bangor, Maine, and he’s been returning to Castle Rock, a town first introduced in his 1979 novel The Dead Zone, through forty years of bestselling horror.

But before both of these locations became literary institutions, there was Jerusalem’s Lot, a quaint Maine village with many dark secrets. For every kind and generous resident, there’s another sleeping with the phone repairman, peddling gossip over the register, or making lucrative real estate deals under the table. In his second novel, Salem’s Lot, King delights in uncovering the scandalous sins of this tiny burg before a powerful vampire enters the scene. Kurt Barlow and his familiar Richard Straker...

“Die Jason! Die!”: Six Badass Horror Movie Fans Like Tommy Jarvis [Friday the 13th Week]
Image
Presented by Paramount Scares, Friday the 13th Week sees Bloody Disgusting heading to Camp Crystal Lake for a series of features that celebrate the Voorhees family and their influence. Yesterday, Rachel Reeves highlighted other camp-adjacent scares. Today, Luiz H.C. takes inventory of all the horror movie fans in horror similar to franchise hero Tommy Jarvis.

Writers may come up with nightmares and directors bring them to life, but everyone knows that it’s the horror fans that really keep the genre going. That’s why it’s always refreshing to see scary movies show some appreciation towards the community, like that time Jason Voorhees was (rather brutally) defeated by a young monster movie enthusiast played by Corey Feldman, aka Tommy Jarvis.

In light of the 40th anniversary for both Jarvis and Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter, we’ve come up with a list celebrating six other badass horror fans in horror movies.

10 Best Horror Comedies Of The 1980s
Image
The '80s were a prominent decade in the horror genre and branching off from that are some of the best comedy horror films. The popular subgenre is often a hit or miss as some of the films lean too far into a campy, comedic tone, fully taking away from any effective thrills. Therefore, the best horror comedy films strike the right balance between the two genres and create an equally entertaining and spooky time.

Most comical, cheesy horror films are self-aware and make a deliberate effort to be a B-movie, but that's where they begin to differ from the best. Films like An American Werewolf in London are merely hoping to provide a few laughs with their frightening concepts. The best horror comedies range from classics like Beetlejuice and Ghostbusters to more underrated films such as Vampire's Kiss.

The Powerful Message You Might've Missed in 'Fright Night'
Image
At first glance, 1985s Fright Night seems like just a cheesy vampire movie filled with goofy characters, over-the-top performances, and Chris Sarandon as a seductive vampire in very '80s outfits. But all that camp goes hand-in-hand with the movies surprising queer themes. Buried beneath the story of teenager Charley (William Ragsdale) suspecting that his neighbor Jerry is a vampire (despite the very unvampire-like name) is a metaphor for the struggles of LGBTQ+ youth, the desire for acceptance, and a vampire in love with both a woman from his past and his current male companion.

Star of Classic '80s Vampire Movie Almost Turned Down His Role Due to the Film's Title: 'I'm a Serious Actor'

Fright Night remains a campy horror classic with great practical effects and creepy creatures. Star Chris Sarandon was initially hesitant about the script but was won over by the quality. The film defied expectations of financial success with little interference from the studio, spawning a sequel.

Fright Night is a gloriously campy horror movie remembered for some impressive special effects, a gruesome villain, and some knowing nods to the genre it is almost a parody of. Manifest Medias Table Read podcast recently released a new episode centering on the horror movie, which saw the original cast, and director Tom Holland, joined by Mark Hamill and Rosario Dawson to do a live reading of the script. In a subsequent interview, star Chris Sarandon, who plays the villainous vampire Jerry Dandrige, revealed that he initially wanted to reject the script based purely on its title.

Chris Sarandon is Willing to Reprise His Role in the Child's Play Franchise
Image
Chris Sarandon would consider reprising his role as Detective Mike Norris in Child's Play, but believes that Norris is currently retired. Sarandon was hooked after reading the screenplay for Fright Night, and that collaboration led to him teaming up again with director Tom Holland on Child's Play. Despite not appearing in any of the sequels, remakes, or the streaming series Chucky, Sarandon remains an active member of the horror movie community via film fests and conventions.

Chris Sarandon portrayed one of the most beguiling vampires any horror film can offer scary movie fans. After Sarandon’s stint as the suave yet ever-so dangerous, apple-eating creature of the night, Jerry Dandrige, in Tom Holland’s Fright Night, the two creatives reunited three years later to collaborate on yet another enduring classic from the genre, Child’s Play (1988). Sarandon played the part of Detective Mike Norris and matched wits with the pint-sized Chucky (Brad Dourif) during his bloody,...

10 Classic Hollywood Stars You Forgot Appeared In Horror Movies
Image
Classic Hollywood stars, known for their work in other genres, also took on roles in horror movies, delivering iconic performances. Famous actresses like Barbara Stanwyck and Joan Crawford showcased their talent in psychological horror films, proving their versatility. Notable actors such as Charlton Heston and Gregory Peck dipped their toes into the horror genre, adding depth to their filmography.

Many actors choose to stay away from horror movies for different reasons, so it might come as a surprise that some classic Hollywood actors, known for their works in other genres, appeared in at least one horror movie. The horror genre has seen a variety of actors, many of them known for their performances in other genres, while others dedicate most of their careers to appearing in scary movies. However, what might seem surprising to many, is to know that some classic Hollywood stars also gave the horror genre a chance at some point.

What The Cast Of Fright Night Has Done Since 1985
Image
The cast of the horror film Fright Night has experienced varying levels of success since its release in 1985, with some achieving cult status and others finding success in other areas beyond film. The movie helped launch the careers of many of its actors, including William Ragsdale, who has made television appearances and sporadic film appearances since 1985. Chris Sarandon, known for his role in Dog Day Afternoon, went on to star in other iconic films and has found continued success in New York theater. He also started a podcast about cooking in 2022.

The cast of the horror flick Fright Night has been busy since the movie's release in 1985. With its mix of campy aesthetics and true terror, Fright Night has become a cult classic in the years since its release. The movie starred multiple award-winning actors alongside several relative newcomers. Fright Night spawned a failed sequel and a less-than-successful remake, but...

The Resurrected (1991) – Wtf Happened to This Adaptation?
Image
We’ve talked about Stephen King as the king of horror literature, but there’s another name who is pretty important in the grand scheme of horror. He has had tabletop games, video games, comic book adaptations, and movies made after his work. He has sort of become like John Carpenter in a way. You hear all the time how a movie, or its score in particular, is Carpenter-esque and that has happened to one Howard Phillips Lovecraft. He only lived to 46 and had many works published after his death, but also is the man behind the old gods and the Cthulhu mythos. Even when filmmakers and game designers don’t use creations directly from the author’s work, a lot of horror can be considered Lovecraftian. While some of the more famous ones like Re-Animator and From Beyond are stone cold classics, I wanted to look at an underseen adaptation.

Terror Con 2023 Event Report: Massachusetts Horror Convention Returns with Star-Studded Celebration

Other big draws included Lance Henriksen (Aliens), Edward Furlong (Terminator 2), pro wrestling legend Mick Foley, The Walking Dead‘s Seth Gilliam, Ross Marquand, Chandler Riggs, Emily Kinney, and Katelyn Nacon, Danielle Harris (Halloween), Sherilyn Fenn (Twin Peaks), John Kassir (Tales from the Crypt), and a Fright Night reunion with Chris Sarandon,...

‘Renfield’ – 8 Things We Learned from the Blu-ray Commentary Track
Image
Now that Renfield is available on Blu-ray and DVD, I think a lot of people will be kicking themselves for not sinking their teeth into the horror-comedy on the big screen. The home video release boasts an hour of making-of featurettes and deleted/extended scenes, plus an audio commentary with eight crew members.

The track features producer Samantha Nisenboim, screenwriter Ryan Ridley, makeup effects supervisor Christien Tinsley, visual effects supervisor James E. Price, assistant editor Noah Cody, supervising sound editor/sound designer John Marquis, supervising sound editor Nancy Nugent, and supervising digital colorist David Cole.

Here are eight things I learned from the Renfield commentary…

1. Using footage from the original Dracula was Adam McKay’s idea.

Renfield opens with Nicolas Cage’s Dracula and Nicholas Hoult’s Renfield inserted into footage from Tod Browning’s 1931 classic adaptation of Dracula, a concept that came from McKay after boarding the project.

Renfield gets a “Dracula Sucks Edition” release packed with extras
Image
Universal’s Dracula comedy Renfield (read our review Here), starring Nicolas Cage as Dracula and Nicholas Hoult as his titular lackey, was a box office disaster, pulling in just $25 million worldwide… which is a shame, because the movie is a lot of fun. Maybe it will reach more of an audience when it receives a digital, Blu-ray, and DVD release on June 6th – and Universal is doing their best to make sure viewers will check it out, giving it a “Dracula Sucks Edition” release that will be packed with extras!

Based on a treatment written by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, Renfield was directed by Chris McKay (The Tomorrow War) from a screenplay by Ryan Ridley (Rick and Morty). In Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula, R.M. Renfield was an inmate at a lunatic asylum who was thought to be suffering from delusions but actually is a servant of Dracula.

‘You Just Want to Put Him on a Ritz and Eat Him’: Nathan Lane and Amy Ryan on Ari Aster and ‘Beau Is Afraid’

Nathan Lane and Amy Ryan steal all their scenes in Ari Aster’s “Beau Is Afraid” as Roger and Grace, a quack surgeon and his compassionate do-gooder wife who’ve fallen on hard times and take in Joaquin Phoenix’s neurotic mommy’s boy after Grace accidentally (or does she?) mows him down with a van. The veteran character actors had not previously worked together, despite meeting all the way back in 1987 when Lane was in the national tour of Neil Simon’s “Broadway Bound.”

“She was dating the young man who was playing Eugene, William Ragsdale,” Lane told IndieWire over Zoom. “I watched her become this superb actress, and then we were on ‘Only Murders in the Building’ but we didn’t have any scenes together, so I was thrilled that we finally, finally after all these years had gotten to work together.”

The duo share a loopy chemistry...

Renfield: Nicholas Hoult has shared the deleted dance sequence
Universal’s Dracula comedy Renfield (read our review Here), starring Nicolas Cage as Dracula and Nicholas Hoult as his titular lackey, didn’t light up the box office when it reached theatres last weekend. So far it has only pulled in just over $12 million… and those are the worldwide numbers. Now playing in theaters, Universal’s Renfield uses the original Universal Monsters classic Dracula (1931) as the jumping off point for a brand new adventure, dissecting the not-quite-healthy relationship between Dracula and his loyal servant, R.M. Renfield. But the original Dracula isn’t the only fanged horror classic that Renfield pays loving homage to.

An early scene in Renfield shows Nicolas Cage’s Dracula taking a vaporous form and entering the body of an elderly priest through the mouth, quite literally exploding the priest’s body apart. What you may not have noticed is that the ill-fated priest was played by the star of another classic vampire movie. Yes, that’s William Ragsdale, star of 1985’s Fright Night!

Ragsdale of course played Charley Brewster in Tom Holland’s original Fright Night, who survives a nightmarish encounter with the vampire Jerry Dandrige (Chris Sarandon). Ragsdale’s “Older Priest” (his official credit...

The others tagging along are: James, an aspiring chef and Chloe’s brother; his girlfriend Caitlin; Katya, a scientist from Russia; and David, Brandon’s cousin from Florida. Funny Halloween movies: The 21 most hilarious and hysterical horror films
Image
Well ladies and gentlemen, we’re basically two-thirds of the way through October, and you know what that means. It means the Season of the Witch is upon us. All Hallows’ Eve. The time when death and dismemberment and ghosts and goblins and monsters of all types go mainstream, and every product suddenly grows pumpkin spice crazy. I swear I saw a can of pumpkin spice insect repellant in the supermarket the other day. Or maybe that was just a hallucination.

Another thing we have come to count on during Halloween season is horror movies, of course – but not just the “Halloween” or “Friday the 13th” or “A Nightmare on Elm Street” variety. I’m talking about the films that blend scares and laughs in almost equal measure, that simultaneously test our nerves and tickle our funny bone. Fright and mirth can coexist just fine, we’ve come to learn.

Today, a new episode of the show was released, and in those one hosts John “The Arrow” Fallon and Lance Vlcek are looking back at the ten dismissed 1988 sequel Fright Night: Part 2, which crashed and burned at the box office with a measly 2.9 million box office haul.

Directed by Tommy Lee Wallace, who takes over from the first film’s Tom Holland, Fright Night: Part 2 features young Charley Brewer, fresh out of psychiatric hospital, and the vampire hunting former TV show host Peter Vincent facing more thirsty vampires.

The film stars William Ragsdale and Roddy McDowell, reprising the roles they made famous in the first film, alongside Traci Lind,...

Year Of The Vampire: Fright Night Embraces Queer Vampirism And Is So Cool, Brewster
Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror (1922)
(Welcome to Year of the Vampire, a series examining the greatest, strangest, and sometimes overlooked vampire movies of all time in honor of "Nosferatu," which turns 100 this year.)

Just before the 2020 presidential election, the Michigan Democrats held a fundraiser where the original cast of "Fright Night" would reunite via Zoom to do a live script reading of the 1985 vampire comedy, with Mark Hamill stepping in for the late Roddy McDowall and Rosario Dawson for any additional one-off characters. I joined hundreds of viewers as Chris Sarandon, William Ragsdale, Amanda Bearse, Stephen Geoffreys, Jonathan Stark, and Dorothy Fielding...

Original Fright Night Director Is Planning a Halloween Style Legacy Sequel
Image
Sequels to legacy horror movies are so hot right now. Following on from the likes of 2018's Halloween and the upcoming Candyman, next on the list of unexpected sequels is Fright Night 2, with the original Fright Night writer Tom Holland (no relation to Spider-Man) recently letting slip that he has been hard at work on bringing a follow-up to the 1985 vampire classic to life.

"I'm still trying, I'm writing a sequel to Fright Night now... I'm calling it Fright Night 2: Resurrection. Well, it's the only way to protect myself: If you wanna see something done right, do it yourself...Of course, Charlie's back, and so is Evil Ed. I'm bringing back everybody I can. I'm calling it Resurrection because we've got to resurrect Billy Cole and Jerry Dandridge. And now I'll say no more."

Released in 1985, Fright Night follows teenager Charley Brewster, a horror-film junkie. When a reclusive new...

Which is Better? #7 – The Lost Boys vs. Fright Night
Image
It’s been a while since I penned a Which is Better article on here, so, as seen as Summer is making me wish Autumn was here, and I’m counting down the days for the Halloween season, I figured I’d go back to two of my favourite vampire movies ever, and pit them against each other in this almost-pointless-because-it’s-subjective-anyway battle of evil versus evil, vamp versus vamp. Fright Night versus The Lost Boys.

*Cue People are Strange by The Doors*

Ok, so I grew up with The Lost Boys on my television set and the record of the soundtrack echoing from the stereo system. I have always had a lot of fondness for the 80s glam-vamp teen-comedy that featured some of the big names from the era, with Keifer Sutherland in the role of head-but-not-quite-head vampire, David, Jason Patrick and Corey Haim as brothers Micheal and Sam,...
