Before making his fourth feature film, the action revenge thriller One Spoon of Chocolate, legendary rapper and music producer RZA was still, he confesses, unsure of himself as a filmmaker, feeling that he hadn’t yet mastered the process, the “rhythms” as he calls it, of being a director, at least not to the same comfort level he had with music.
After scaling the heights of hip hop as the de facto head of the Wu-Tang Clan, arguably the most influential rap group in history, RZA has found increasing success in film and television, firstly as an actor — he has starred in films like American Gangster (2007), G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013) and Nobody (2021) and series like Californication — and more significantly with writing and directing. His directorial debut, 2012’s The Man With the Iron Fists, starred Oscar-winner Russell Crowe, Dave Bautista and Lucy Lu. RZA followed that with Love Beats Rhymes, a musical drama starring Azelia Banks,...

Depending on how tapped in of a hip-hop head you are, the following statement is either a fact of life or a revelation: Roc Marciano is one of the most impactful MCs of his generation. Since 2010’s MarcBerg, he’s been a catalyst of a new indie rap scene, dropping albums as braggadocious and flashy as those in the major label orbit, while selling many of them direct-to-consumer from his website.

Ghostface Killah has announced the long-awaited sequel to his 2000 classic, Supreme Clientele, with the album slated to arrive Aug. 22 via Mass Appeal.
The Supreme Clientele 2 announcement was accompanied by the release of a first single, “Rap Kingpin,” which features some characteristically dense, over-the-top, and reference-stuffed Ghostface bars (e.g. “Ghost is global, classic, soulful/Teddy Pendergrass on wax with the nasty vocals”). The track also incorporates samples of Eric B & and Rakim’s “My Melody” and Ghostface’s own “Mighty Healthy,” a highlight off the original Supreme Clientele.

Hip-hop is no longer solely youth culture; it’s just culture, with cross-generational scenes full of artists intent on capturing their era’s zeitgeist. But Raekwon The Chef’s latest solo album, The Emperor’s New Clothes, was unquestionably tailored for the 35-and-up hip-hop heads who descended upon Madison Square Garden to see the Wu-Tang Clan’s possible final hometown show last week. There are no stunt features or out-of-touch Gen Z reaches here, just a 17-track dose of raw, New York City hip-hop.

On a warm summer night in the City of Brotherly Love, history was made as the Wu-Tang Clan took the stage for what was billed as their final show — and they went out in epic fashion. The Wells Fargo Center was electric with energy as thousands of fans gathered to witness the legendary hip-hop collective deliver a performance that was equal parts celebration, reflection, and unfiltered lyrical fire. Direct support for this tour came from Run The Jewels who also put on an electrifying performance.
From the moment the lights dimmed and the iconic opening chords of “Bring da Ruckus” echoed through the arena, it was clear that Wu-Tang wasn’t here to say goodbye quietly. With all living members present — RZA, Gza, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, U-God, Masta Killa, and Cappadonna — the group launched into a masterclass in hip-hop showmanship. There’s something grimly appropriate about Raekwon titling his eighth studio album The Emperor’s New Clothes. Not because the album is some grand misstep, but because it drapes itself in legacy—ornate, heavy, and familiar—and feels more invested in preserving a myth than reimagining it. It’s the work of a rapper taking great pains to show he still has “it,” while quietly admitting that he’s not quite sure what “it” even means anymore.
The Emperor’s New Clothes feels plush, with the kind of ornamental detail—like Swizz Beatz’s epic orchestral flourishes on the “600 School”—that you might expect from a late-career legend with something to prove. But the album is rather conservative in its refusal to deviate from the safest possible version of the rapper’s established aesthetic. Every proper song here could’ve comfortably dropped in from 2005.

Near the end of what’s purported to be Wu-Tang Clan’s final Madison Square Garden set, Raekwon gave the crowd an affirmation about the legendary group: “One of one!” The most derivative rappers in the world will tell you they are too; the Clan actually embody the term. At times, mainstream rap these days feels like a gentrified city where the spaces that once harbored unforgettable memories have been converted into yet another Starbucks. Lyricism as the default measure of talent feels like a distant memory. But even those cities have indelible,...

August 13th, 2021 saw the Wu-Tang Clan, one of hip-hop’s most iconic and influential collectives, take the stage at Colorado’s legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre for a performance that defied convention and cemented their legacy as musical innovators. Backed by the 60-piece Colorado Symphony Orchestra, the group delivered a set that blended their raw, gritty Staten Island sound with the lush, expansive tones of classical instrumentation. This wasn’t just a concert, it was a bold experiment, a fusion of genres, and a live scoring of the 1978 martial arts classic The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, the film that inspired their historical debut album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). "The Wu can't be out there trying to do the same thing we did 20 years ago." Breaking Glass Pictures has revealed an official trailer for music doc A Wu-Tang Experience: Live at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, ready for release this May. The concert doc originally premiered at the 2023 Urbanworld Film Festival a few years ago, and will be out on VOD to watch this summer. The Wu-Tang Clan, with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, perform at the famed Red Rocks Amphitheater outside of Denver. It's a famous venue located in the mountains with giant red rocks on each side of the seating. I've seen many, many concerts here over the years. The iconic hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan features the members RZA, Gza, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, U-God, and Masta Killa. In 2021, they got together for this epic concert experience playing at Red Rocks in August at the end of the summer,...

There’s a good chance that if you hear the name Shameik Moore, you’d associate him with the voice of Miles Morales from the animated Spider-Verse films. The actor has lent his vocal cords to the character over two — soonish to be three — movies starting back in 2018 with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Outside of that, you might recognize him for his live-action roles in movies like The Gutter or Samaritan or even for his on-screen appearance as Raekwon in Hulu’s series, Wu-Tang: An American Saga. But those who have been with his career even earlier might have gotten their first view of Moore’s abilities in a gone-too-soon Netflix series titled The Get Down. The show, which centered its story on the birth of hip-hop, was also one of the first gigs that put Justice Smith in the spotlight alongside industry vets Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Watchmen) and...

Shameik Moore shot to fame for voicing Miles Morales in the Spider-Verse animated films and gained additional recognition for his role as Sha/Raekwon in Wu-Tang: An American Saga. However, it’s his portrayal of Miles Morales that remains his standout role. While fans eagerly await the third installment of the series, Moore’s personal life has taken a chaotic turn.
Recently, his relationships with his Spider-Verse co-stars have been thrust into the spotlight, largely due to a series of strange posts and comments that have left many feeling uncomfortable. While not vulgar, these actions have certainly raised eyebrows and seemed inappropriate.
Earlier, we reported on Moore’s fallout with co-star Hailee Steinfeld, and now he’s found himself at the center of another controversy involving Laura Harrier over an odd TikTok video. In the wake of the drama, Moore issued an apology video and has since deactivated his social...

The Wu-Tang Clan members' real names are much less known than the exciting and themed titles they dubbed themselves when they formed the influential hip-hop group. In the 1980s, on Staten Island, New York, cousins Robert Diggs, Gary Grice, and Russell Jones began rapping together and soon caught the attention of larger labels and recognized rappers. After some time apart, the three men came back together in 1992 and formed the Wu-Tang Clan, eventually bringing in seven more members to fill out the ranks of the group.
Those who have seen Wu-Tang: An American Saga may have a sense of the history of the group, but the pop culture and musical impact of the Wu-Tang extends far beyond any biography. Rap legends Ghostface Killah and Nas collaborated on “Scar Tissue,” a single from the Wu-Tang rapper’s upcoming Set The Tone album. The T The Human-produced track showcases the two New York rap stalwarts rhyming back-to-back over a Far East-flavored sample. “Scar Tissue” is their first collaboration since 1995’s “Verbal Intercourse” on Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx. Some listeners may be disappointed by a homophobic slur Ghostface uses on the track, but “Scar Tissue” nonetheless primes his fanbase for Set The Tone, his 12th studio album.

Lil Yachty and Tierra Whack are two of the more inventive artists in hip-hop today — two wildly original talents who have charted their own paths without following anyone else’s trends. If you’re going to compare them to anyone, though, it might as well be each other. Both started their careers in places with rich musical histories: Yachty began rapping as a teen in the hitmaking playground of Atlanta, while Tierra sharpened her pen and earned a spot in the history of slick MCs who call Philadelphia home. Both found success suddenly,...

Wu-Tang Clan’s debut, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), was more than an album — it was a universe unto itself. The album, which dropped Nov. 9, 1993, introduced the world to nine wildly talented rappers at once, along with the crackly genius of RZA’s soul-and-kung-fu-movie-inflected production and an entire cosmology of lyrical references. 30 years later, there’s still plenty to unpack, which we attempt to do on the latest episode of Rolling Stone Music Now.

New York City is set to honor Wu-Tang Clan in a big way for the 30th anniversary of their seminal debut, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). Not only has Mayor Eric Adams declared November 9th as Wu-Tang Day, but the Empire State Building will be lit up in the group’s signature black and yellow colors.
Released on November 9th, 1993, 36 Chambers was an instant classic as the group of nine rappers — RZA, Gza, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killa, Inspectah Deck, U-God, and Masta Killa — came together to spit hardcore rhymes over kung fu movie samples and hard-hitting snares on songs like “Protect Ya Neck” and “C.R.E.A.M.”
Earlier this year, RZA wrapped up the final season of his Hulu series, Wu-Tang: American Saga, documenting the rise of Wu-Tang Clan, which he discussed in an interview with Consequence. The group’s mastermind is currently celebrating the...

Always one to balk in the face of convention, RZA this fall will turn the orchestral concept of “chamber music” — small ensembles playing ornate works — into “chambers music”: a symphony orchestra interpreting Wu-Tang Clan’s blockbuster 1993 debut Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) live onstage. “Taking Back the Groove” will showcase the trials, tribulations and success stories of Week’s life. Per the doc’s official logline, “like many Black artists throughout American recording history, his talent was strip-mined to enrich white-owned record labels. Bobby “RZA” Diggs, the producer and leader of the legendary hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan, hopes he’s created a guidebook for people who grew up the way he did.
Speaking about Season 3 of Hulu’s “Wu-Tang: An American Saga,” the fictionalized account of the group’s origin that he created with Alex Tse, he says, “This show is a map for young men trying to navigate themselves through life. Whether they’re in music, sports or nine-to-fives. I just hope that when young men, and young women, watch it, they take these examples to heart.”
Though “Wu-Tang” began in the midst of a clash between rival gangs, the series’ third and final season sees Bobby (played by Ashton Sanders), ever the perfectionist, spending every waking hour in the studio as the architect behind the group and each member’s solo careers — though issues with drugs, girls and the rappers...

"Wu-Tang: An America Saga" may be bidding fans farewell after an impressive three-season run, each full of exciting hip-hop misadventures, but the story isn't ending without one last mind-blowing lap. The hit biopic drama, which made its splashy debut back in 2019, kicked off its third and final season on Hulu on Feb. 15, jumping to Wu-Tang Clan's wild success years after the big basement flood that almost ruined their solo albums.
