Ravi Chhabriya’s “Detective Sherdil” (2025) is a straight-up disaster from the get-go. Nothing is redeeming about it. Be it a spectacularly demented plot, a sleuth who just miraculously unlocks a mystery, the embarrassingly tawdry music and editing compete to rattle your patience and nerves. Among an ensemble stacked with respectable, fine actors like Ratna Pathak Shah, Boman Irani, you wonder how they could even be compelled to go through the grind of this blatantly silly film. Diljit Dosanjh gets a flashy introduction, overselling his sleuth’s skills, which is an instant recipe for disaster.
Detective Sherdil (2025) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:
Detective Sherdil (Diljit Dosanjh) is a sleuth of great self-possession. When the film opens, he compares himself to the greats, like Sherlock Holmes and Byomkesh, and adds that he does something that neither had ever done. He makes reels after cracking a case. The film has this jocular spirit, but the humour is so juvenile,...

Directed by Ravi Chhabriya, Detective Sherdil follows the template of a classic whodunit, where the protagonist solves a murder mystery and finds out who the killer was. Though the writers did a decent job with the mystery bit of the story, I felt that the characters weren’t vibrant or intriguing enough to attract the attention of the audience. Now, be it a lighthearted film like Murder on the Orient Express or a serious one like the 1969 Rajesh Khanna starrer, Ittefaq, what these whodunits have in common is that they feature interesting characters that keep you hooked and entertained. I felt that Natasha’s character could have been written in a much better manner, and her dynamic with Sherdil could have been the highlight of the film. But since those scenes were not fleshed out properly and the writing lacked punch, it wasn’t able to leave much of an impact.

On paper, the idea of playing the busybody housewife Rajeshwari in Toh Baat Pakki, who seems to have only one mission in life, namely to see her sister (newcomer Yuvika) married off, must have sounded like an exciting new character to explore for the brilliant actress. Alas, Tabu had not bargained for the mundane situations and the pedestrian dialogues that her character is put into.
Toh Baat Pakki is one of those tragic comedies that don’t elicit a hint of humour. If Basu Chatterjee lost the plot, he would probably have turned up with this listless ode to the middle-of-the-road movies of the 1970s.
This middle-of-the-roader gets stranded in the middle of nowhere. The plot is intrinsically bereft of ingenuity. The direction is plodding and strained most of the way.
Tabu plays the interesting-on-paper dreadful-in-execution housewife as part-schemer, part-dreamer but entirely annoying and avoidable. Unlike the shrew that Sridevi...
