1st Test: Saud Shakeel, Agha Salman's fifties help Pakistan recover against Sri Lanka
Image
Galle (Sri Lanka), July 17 (Ians) Saud Shakeel and Agha Salman led a late recovery for Pakistan in their first innings in the first Test against Sri Lanka, hitting unbeaten half-centuries to help recover from a precarious 101/5 on the second day of the first Test here on Monday.

Saud Shakeel was batting on 69 while Agha Salman was batting on 61 as they shared an unfinished century partnership for the sixth wicket to take Pakistan to 221/5 in 45 overs before rain and bad light forced an early end to the day’s play.

Though Saud Shakeel and Agha Salman helped Pakistan recover, they were still trailing hosts Sri Lanka by 91 runs after restricting the hosts to 312 all out in their first innings at the Galle International Stadium.

Resuming on the overnight score of 242/6 in 65.4 overs, Sri Lanka lost Ramesh Mendis (5) after he and Dhananjaya de Silva helped the team cross the 250-run mark. Dhananjaya...

2nd Test: New Zealand beat Sri Lanka by an innings and 58 runs, sweep series 2-0
Image
Wellington, March 20 (Ians) New Zealand registered an innings and 58-run victory over Sri Lanka in the second and final Test to sweep the series 2-0 as the tourists’ resistance finally broke late on day four, here on Monday.

Having been asked to follow-on, Sri Lanka needed 416 runs to make the hosts bat again but were bowled out for 358 in their second innings.

The win seemed beyond Sri Lanka when they resumed on 2-113 in the morning session but there was some hope they might bat out the day and even save the match with the help of heavy rain forecast on day five.

Four batters scored half-centuries and No.6 Dhananjaya de Silva ploughed on to the cusp of a century by tea. However, a wicket before and after the tea break, including De Silva’s dismissal for 98 put the game back in New Zealand’s hands as Sri Lanka fell to 318 for seven.

1st Test: Mitchell's ton, Henry's 72 help New Zealand fight back; Sri Lanka 83/3 at end of Day 3
Image
Christchurch (New Zealand), March 11 (Ians) Daryl Mitchell struck his fifth Test century while Matt Henry made a career-best 72 helping New Zealand fight back on Day 3 of the first Test against Sri Lanka at Hagley Oval here on Saturday.

Mitchell scored a superb 102 off 193 deliveries hitting six fours and two sixes and with Henry blazing to a quick-fire half-century as New Zealand clawed their way back into the match.

The Test was delicately poised as Blair Tickner then claimed 3-28 in a superb burst of pace bowling as Sri Lanka slumped to 83/3 in 38 overs in their second innings at the close of play on the third day. They had a slight lead of 65 runs with seven-second innings wickets in hand. Angelo Mathews was batting on 20 along with Prabath Jayasuriya (2 not out) at stumps.

But New Zealand’s spirits were dampened by a leg injury to pacer Neil Wagner late on day three.

Image
Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 15 (Ians) Virat Kohli dished out another batting masterclass with his 46th Odi century while Shubman Gill notched up his second hundred and Mohammed Siraj picked a four-fer to give India a 3-0 series victory with a 317-run thrashing of Sri Lanka at Greenfield International Stadium on Sunday.

In his third century in the last four Odi innings, Kohli hit 13 fours and eight sixes, feasting on a hapless bowling attack.

In his typical style, Kohli was off the blocks quickly and anchored the innings for the large part to be unbeaten on 166 off 110 balls. In his third century in the last four Odi innings, Kohli hit 13 fours and eight sixes, hitting the Sri Lanka bowlers all over the park.

In the last ten overs, he fetched 84 out of the 116 runs India scored to virtually bat Sri Lanka out of the match. He also shared a 131-run partnership with Gill, who was stylish in his 116 off 97 balls, hitting 14 fours and two sixes.

2nd Odi: Kl Rahul's unbeaten 64 carries India to hard-fought four-wicket win over Sri Lanka
Image
Kolkata, Jan 12 (Ians) Wicketkeeper-batter Kl Rahul stepped up when it mattered the most to pull India out of a tricky stage by slamming his 12th Odi fifty and carry them to a hard-fought four-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the second Odi at Eden Gardens, here on Thursday.

After Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj picked three wickets each to bundle out Sri Lanka for 215, the visitors’ bowlers reduced India to 86/4. But Rahul kept his calm and batted sensibly under pressure to make an unbeaten 64 off 103 balls, and struck a crucial 75-run partnership with Hardik Pandya to take India over the line with 40 balls to spare, giving the hosts’ a series win.

Chasing 216, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill smacked six boundaries in the first four overs. But Rohit fell in the fifth over to Chamika Karunaratne, giving a regulation catch to the keeper while looking to punch it through covers without any footwork.

An opening stand of 143 between Gill, who made 70 off 60 and Rohit, who smashed 83 off 67 balls, put India into ascendancy early and set the tone for a big total. Then Kohli smacked his second consecutive Odi century, 113 off 87 balls, making the most out of two reprieves while hitting 12 fours and a six for India to make an improbable 373/7.

In reply, Sri Lanka made 306/8, with Shanaka’s 88-ball 102 coming too late after opener Pathum Nissanka made 72 off 80 balls. Image
Guwahati, Jan 10 (Ians) Virat Kohli looked at his very best again while slamming his 45th Odi century and second consecutive ton in the format while captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill slammed fifties as they propelled India to a massive 373/7 against Sri Lanka in the first match of the three-match series at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, here on Tuesday.

On a flat pitch with a lighting fast outfield, Rohit and Gill made 83 and 70 respectively while sharing a 143-run opening stand to set the tone for a big total, before Kohli carried forward the mantle with his 87-ball 113, hitting 12 fours and a six for his ninth Odi century against Sri Lanka, going past the legendary Sachin Tendulkar for the milestone.

Initially watchful, Kohli got his first two boundaries by stylishly driving off his wrist against Dasun Shanaka and when Wanindu Hasaranga dropped short, he was quick to go on backfoot and...

2nd T20I: Axar Patel, Suryakumar half-centuries in vain as India lose to Sri Lanka by 16 runs
Image
Pune, Jan 5 (Ians) A brilliant half-century by all-rounder Axar Patel and his blazing 91-run partnership with Suryakumar Yadav (51) went in vain as India failed to recover from early setbacks and lost to Sri Lanka by 16 runs in the second T20I of the three-match series at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (McA) Stadium, here on Thursday.

Axar Patel hammered 6 sixes and two boundaries in his brilliant 31-ball 65 and Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Mavi (26 off 15) dragged India from a precarious position to condition when they needed 20 off the last six deliveries.

But in the end, the task was too stiff for the Gujarat batter who played some sensational shots including three sixes off successive deliveries in the 14th over. Dasun Shanaka got him out in the final over as India’s hopes ended.

India looked in deep trouble after losing four wickets for 34 runs and it became 57/5 in the 10th over before...

Image
Mumbai, Jan 3 (Ians) Deepak Hooda and Axar Patel came together to raise a quick-fire unbeaten half-century partnership in fine rearguard action as India managed to reach 162/5 in 20 overs against Sri Lanka in the first T20I of the three-match series at the Wankhede Stadium, here on Tuesday.

After the Sri Lanka skipper DAsun Shanaka won the toss and elected to field, his bowlers justified his decision as they struck at regular intervals, making full use of the pitch that played a bit slow but was still good for batting.

India looked in deep trouble with half the side inside the dugout with 94 runs on the board but Hooda and Patel came together and raised 68 runs for the unfinished 6th wicket partnership to help India to a decent score.

Hooda hammered 41 not out off 23 deliveries, hitting one boundary and four sixes while Patel struck 31 not out off 20 balls (three fours and...
