Suchitra Mattai, producer of the Oscar-nominated live action short “Anuja,” says the film came out of wanting to highlight young South Asian women.

“It just felt important to tell this particular type of story and to make a platform for young female, Indian, South Asian actresses,” Mattai said during her remarks at the annual South Asians at the Oscars pre-party in Los Angeles Wednesday evening.

The event, held at Carondelet House, celebrated South Asian filmmakers who have received Oscars recognition this year and was attended by various South Asian filmmakers, actors and producers. Charithra Chandran, Manish Dayal and Lilly Singh were among those who attended the party.

“Anuja” chronicles the experience of a 9-year-old garment factory worker who works alongside her 17-year-old sister. Adam J. Graves, the film’s director and Mattai’s husband, said that child labor is “not a South Asian problem, it’s a global problem.”

Unhealthy, desexualised, or comic relief: Plus-sized character depictions in films
Image
Film CommentaryTNM takes a look at the representation of plus-sized characters in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi films. Saradha UFacebook/ T SeriesWhen the Sonakshi Sinha and Huma Qureshi starrer Double Xl was promoted before its theatrical release in November this year, the film was seen as a silver lining by a small, yet substantial number of movie buffs and critics who observe films through the lens of representation and portrayals of body image. Double Xl is among the first few Indian films narrating the stories of two plus-sized women and unlike movies in the past featuring actors in superficial ‘fat’ suits, Double Xl has lead actors who look the part. However, having said that, the Sonakshi Sinha and Huma Qureshi starrer fails to impress on the whole, despite hitting a few right notes. At a rather important point in the film when Huma Qureshi’s Rajshree Trivedi is on...

The two along with two more (Srikanth and Zorawar) break the myth that beauty corresponds to size, a belief that our society has held for generations. These two plus size women discover themselves and realise their dreams.

Saira aspires to be a fashion designer,...
