16 years after its initial release, Jason Statham's action film Crank: High Voltage is seeing success on streaming.
Per FlixPatrol, the 2009 sequel to Statham's 2006 action thriller Crank is topping the charts worldwide. As of June 28, 2025, Crank: High Voltage is Starz's #1 most streamed movie worldwide, holding the number 1 spot in twelve different countries. The film ranks well above other films, including The Equalizer 3 at #2 and Mine at #3. This comes alongside a few of Statham's other films climbing Amazon's top charts.
The infamously fast-paced first film follows Statham as Chev Chelios, a hitman who is poisoned after a job gone wrong. His only chance of survival is to keep his adrenaline up so that he can live long enough to find the antidote. Fans of Always Sunny in Philadelphia may find that the film seems familiar. If you thoughtJason Statham couldn’t possibly top the madness of Crank, just wait until you see what’s powering his heart in Crank: High Voltage. The 2009 sequel to the cult action hit is not only flying high on streaming charts — it’s also heading back to theaters for one night only. That’s right: Crank: High Voltage will screen at Alamo Drafthouse in Raleigh on June 25 for one night only. Why would you wanna see it? Well, let's go back to the first movie.
Yes, this is the one where Statham’s Chev Chelios falls out of a helicopter at the end of the first movie and somehow survives. But that’s only the beginning. In Crank 2, Chev wakes up to find that his heart has been stolen by Chinese gangsters and replaced with a battery-powered artificial heart that only runs for an hour unless he keeps electrocuting himself.

Jared Hess' oddball comedy "Napoleon Dynamite" was an enormous success when it was released back in 2004, making over $46 million on its tiny $400,000 budget. The film was just peculiar enough to attract a snarky audience of jeering twentysomethings who liked to quote the film's kooky dialogue and imitate lead actor Jon Heder's peculiar delivery. The title character lived in a boring city in Idaho, but, like a Wes Anderson character, also lived in a carefully constructed personal universe of his own. Napoleon was always confident and assured, even as he was relentlessly picked on at his high school. His fashion sense stunk, but he attacked the world with a strangely laconic self-assurance that one can't help but envy.
The character was striking enough to launch a miniature industry of "Vote for Pedro" T-shirts, sweaters, mugs, Funko Pops, bumper stickers, and Halloween costumes.

When asked if Hollywood is finally facing its video game renaissance, Jared Hess abruptly switched topics, from “Minecraft” to “Nosferatu.”
“I just loved it,” “A Minecraft Movie” director Hess told IndieWire of the gothic romance from last year. Robert Eggers’ award-winning vampire movie adapts the 1922 German film and Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” by extension. It’s set centuries before video games were invented, but for Hess, Eggers’ exacting and gutsy reconsideration is proof of a key principle behind “A Minecraft Movie.”
“A lot of big movies from the last 20-plus years, so much of the imagery and the experience feels similar,” said Hess. “My favorite [films] are the ones that have personality and characters and interesting things that are unexpected and that surprise you. Those films always inspire me.”
Hess made his feature debut at Sundance in 2004 with an underdog comedy that demonstrated a clarity of vision beyond the twenty-something filmmaker’s years.

The most-watched horror film on Amazon Freevee today is a farcical effort starring the iconic Danny Trejo. I’m talking about John Gulager’s latest film, Seven Cemeteries (stylized on the one sheet as Se7en Cemeteries). The film has been charting in the top 10 on Freevee for the past several days, and today, Seven Cemeteries sits as the third most-watched film on the service overall.
To call this horror picture campy might be an understatement. After all, the flick follows a recently paroled Danny Trejo and his army of undead sidekicks as they face off against a drug impresario. If you need an escape from reality, this may be just the ticket.
In the film, “A recent parolee gets a Mexican witch to resurrect his old posse so that they can help him save a woman’s ranch from a ruthless drug lord.“

Through a haze of tater tots and ill-tempered llamas, it can be easy to forget that “Napoleon Dynamite” is also about time travel. There’s a literal time machine in the movie, yes, but it’s also an ode to retro-nostalgia and small-town teen angst.
Jared Hess’ 2004 cult classic about a pack of misfits growing up in Preston, Idaho, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to mixed results. The low-stakes story was hugely meme-able but still confusing to critics in the mostly pre-internet age. Now, it’s a persistent triumph of the American indie scene and a live show amid an ongoing tour.
“We had no idea anybody would see this film,” said Jon Heder (aka Napoleon himself). “It’s become the ultimate case study. You can go from writing a story to casting the right people to making an endearing and enduring film. It’s absolutely doable.”

As far as modern action heroes go, one of the most enduring has certainly been Jason Statham, who’s headlined a slew of modestly budgeted action flicks that have made him one of the few genre staples left in the game. His career has been interesting, with him alternating smaller-scaled action flicks with bigger, tentpole event films, such as the Fast & Furious films and The Meg 1 & 2. Yet, the movie that established his persona wasn’t the Transporter films or any of his Guy Ritchie movies. Nope, instead, it was a small-scale but ambitious quasi-remake of the film noir classic D.O.A that put him on the map in a big way. That’s right, folks, it’s time to figure out Wtf Happened to Crank!
Jump back to 1997, when a young English director named Guy Ritchie released a little film called Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, which caused a sensation.

While the age-old adage "less is more" is sound filmmaking advice, the opposite applies to Jason Statham's relentless action movies. A case in point is Crank 2: High Voltage, a balls-to-the-wall action sequel that goes so far over the top that it dwarfs the absurdity of the original to leave a big, fat grin etched on the faces of hardcore Statham fanatics. Critics were also impressed, giving Crank 2 slightly better reviews than its predecessor.
Boasting a wild premise that forces Statham's Chev Chelios into a ticking-clock health scenario, Crank 2's high-voltage electricity derives from the extreme plot, flagrant fight scenes, hyper-violence, morbid humor, kinetic camerawork, Statham's breathless stunt work, and more. With the film recently celebrating its 15th anniversary, it's time to hook up the jumper cables and bring Crank 2: High Voltage back to life.

While gritty, realistic action has its place, there's nothing quite like an absurd action thriller that pushes beyond the boundaries of reason. The 2000s delivered plenty of silly action movies that married humor with excitement. Action has the ability to reduce anyone to awe and glee when it's done right. People can get swept away in the all-out fun of action movies in a way that doesn't necessarily happen for all other genres.
Some of the most entertaining action movies of the 2000s kept things light by poking fun at the absurd excesses of the genre. This trend produced a string of action comedies which remain both hilarious and thrilling all these years later. Even if movies weren't overtly gesturing toward the history of the genre, they were often parodying the tropes of action and pushing to see where the boundaries lie.

For more than two decades, the effortlessly cool and charming Jason Statham has dazzled moviegoers all across the world with his dominating on-screen presence and jaw-dropping physical prowess. Known for portraying tough-as-nails characters who kick butt and take names, the Hollywood leading man is one of the entertainment industry's most bankable stars and has appeared in a slew of silver screen hits like The Transporter, Spy, The Expendables, and Hobbs & Shaw.
Back in 2006, Statham was still making a name for himself and showing audiences his dazzling skill set when he headlined the action flick Crank, a pedal-to-the-metal thrill ride that follows hitman Chev Chelios as he is forced to run around Los Angeles and perform adrenaline-pumping stunts after being injected with a lethal poisoning. The movie would help further elevate Statham's status as an actor, though he almost didn't end up playing the memorable character; let's look at how different Crank could have been.

Does anyone else remember Project Greenlight? The Ben Affleck and Matt Damon-produced show about giving amateur filmmakers a chance to make a feature-length film with “studio” resources? In its third (and final) season, they would focus on the horror genre, delivering the high energy and quite bonkers, Feast. While it’s sequels are considerably more Grindhouse, there’s still a lot of charm with that first film and a lot of that has to do with director, John Gulager. On the show, Gulager always came across as a bit eccentric. Son of actor Clu Gulager, it’s always been evident that John has a great knowledge of the world of cinema. So it’s not surprising to see him remix the story of the Seven Samurai/The Magnificent Seven into one with zombies and the supernatural. And the humor allows Seven Cemeteries to switch things up just enough.

Seven Cemeteries is a classic Western, a tale of vengeance, redemption and zombies. When Santana Bravo (Danny Trejo) is finally released from prison on parole, he's called upon by a young widow, Dolores (Emma Ramos) to protect her ranch from Abuelo (Sal Lopez), the remorseless and violent drug lord responsible for her husband's death and Bravo's imprisonment decades prior. The problem is, Bravo's loyal squad of friends, criminals and ne'er-do-wells died years ago. However, the local bruja or, witch portrayed by Maria Canals-Barrera, has the perfect solution. He should just bring them back from the dead. Granting him a magical ritual knife and her living-impaired husband, Miguel (Efren Ramirez), la Bruja sends Bravo back on his quest for redemption, with a little help from friends from the other side.

It takes a lot of range to go from playing the quietly awkward Pedro in Napoleon Dynamite to getting ripped and donning drag to join Jason Statham in the loud, in-your-face film, Crank (more on that below). That's Efren Ramirez for you, an underrated and dynamic actor who swings wildly from genre to genre. MovieWeb spoke with him about the new film Seven Cemeteries, which also runs the gamut in terms of genre and style. It's a comedic Western horror film that sees him as a snarky undead companion to the one and only Danny Trejo, who plays Bruno, a hardcore but quirky antihero seeking a ragtag team to help him protect a woman's prized ranch from villainous drug lords. Again, it's a far cry from his iconic role in Napoleon Dynamite, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.

Danny Trejo has become one of the most iconic figures in movie history. From Machete to Predators, he's been everything from dashing hero to terrifying villain, slashing and mowing his way through film after film. In his latest work, the horror-comedy Western Seven Cemeteries, directed by fellow actor John Gulager, Trejo is Bravo Santana: a parolee who's just gotten out of serving decades in prison thanks to a false charge from the ruthless drug lord, Abuelo (Sal Lopez). No sooner does he get even a moment of freedom that he's tasked by Dolores, a young widow, to help her protect her family's ranch from Abuelo. The problem is, Bravo lost his loyal posse of rogues and fighters long ago. Luckily, a Bruja (Maria Canals-Barrera) has the perfect solution he can raise his old friends back from the dead for one last battle.

Efren Ramirez has become beloved in the pop culture sphere as one of Hollywood's most loved character actors. After winning over the hearts of viewers in 2004 in Napoleon Dynamite and convincing everyone to "Vote For Pedro," he has gone on to play iconic supporting roles all across different movies. This time, in John Gulager's horror-comedy-Western Seven Cemeteries, Ramirez portrays Miguel, the faithful friend and lover who joins Danny Trejo's Santana Bravo in his mission to save a woman's ranch from a deadly drug lord, with the help of his posse. There's just one hitch Miguel and the entire posse are undead. And it turns out, being a zombie comes with a few convenient perks.

Almost twenty years ago, viewers of the Project Greenlight reality TV series got to watch as John Gulager was hired to direct the creature feature Feast for a producing team that included Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, and Wes Craven. We spoke with Danny Trejo leading up to the release of Seven Cemeteries, his uniquely comedic new Western film that features familiar faces like Efren Ramirez (Napoleon Dynamite) and Maria Canals-Barrera (Wizards of Waverly Place). It's a wild, supernatural ride as Trejo's lead antihero, Bruno, guides a ragtag undead posse to redemption. It's also just the kind of project for a likable badass like Trejo, who is perhaps best known for his awesome collaborations with filmmaker Robert Rodriguez, including his eponymous role in Robert Rodriguez's cult classic Machete franchise. Ever since the movie was released following the faux trailer's premiere during Grindhouse (2007), fans have been yearning for another Machete film.
There was talk of a potential sequel titled Machete Kills in Space, and Trejo confirmed to us that he's still interested in the idea. "I've got to get Robert to make Machete Kills in Space. I'll take Elon Musk with me!

Directed by actor and filmmaker John Gulager, Seven Cemeteries is an upcoming movie that blends black comedy, irreverent horror, revenge drama and the classic Western. It casts parolees and zombies as the unlikely heroes of the Oklahoma farmlands. Santana Bravo (Danny Trejo), the leader of a gang, has just gotten parole, having spent the last few decades serving time for a crime he didn't commit. He's just gotten a taste of freedom when a recently widowed young woman, Dolores (Emma Ramos), comes to him for help to save her ranch from Santana's nemesis: the ruthless and violent drug lord, Abuelo (Sal Lopez). Napoleon Dynamite hit the big screen two decades ago and has since developed a cult following thanks to its refreshing new take on the coming-of-age comedy scene. Besides, given its commercial success, it appears that there's a sequel in the discussion, which Efren Ramirez recently teased to ComicBook, hinting at the inclusion of the original cast. Ramirez starred as Class President candidate Pedro Snchez in the indie film that gained $46.1 million globally against a $400,000 budget and currently has a 72% Rotten Tomatoes score.

Napoleon Dynamite might be getting a sequel. Efren Ramirez, who played Pedro Snchez in the 2004 indie coming-of-age film, says the entire cast is willing to reprise their roles.

Searchlight Pictures is celebrating a milestone anniversary with … T-shirts!
The studio, which is marking the moment with a variety of initiatives and partners from Ore-Ida and Warby Parker to Hitching Post Winery, has teamed up once again with buzzy Los Angeles brand Hiro Clark to honor its 30th year in business. The 2000s were decades filled with some truly funny comedy movies, but plenty of hilarious releases have been mostly forgotten by modern audiences. Although this was the decade where Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, and Ben Stiller achieved major success at the box office and Judd Apatows unique brand of comedy took over, there were some movies that came and went without leaving a lasting impact. However, this did not make them any less effective, and many of these forgotten comedies deserve to be revisited.
The best comedies of the 2000s were often crude and raunchy with plenty of over-the-top energy, although some of the most underrated and forgotten movies from this era were far subtler and valued sentimental more. Other comedies from shortly after the dawn of the millennium lacked the originality needed to make a lasting impact and were consumed and quickly forgotten by viewers. Whatever the reason, these...

"Save this lady's farm – job's done." Quiver Distr. has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror comedy called Seven Cemeteries, made by filmmaker John Gulager (a Project Greenlight winner who also made Feast and Piranha 3Dd previously). As with everything else horror, this is set for release in October in time for the horror season. A recent parolee named Bravo gets a Mexican witch to resurrect his old posse so that they can help him save a woman's ranch from a ruthless drug lord. The film is loosely inspired by The Seven Samurai and The Magnificent Seven, as he tries to round up his old gang to get revenge... But of course it's hard to wrangle the (un)dead. Danny Trejo stars as Bravo, with Sal Lopez, Samantha Ashley, Efren Ramirez, Vincent M. Ward, Lew Temple, and Richard Esteras. Not much to see here. Even though they tried to make this all big & crazy,...

The best Napoleon Dynamite quotes celebrate awkward teens in high school with hilarity and deadpan delivery. Many characters, from Napoleon to Kip to Uncle Rico, deliver lines that become instantly quotable in this quirky comedy. From random inane hilarity to absurdly real dialogue, these quotes have the power to live forever and make the movie rewatchable.
In 2004, a small, innocuous comedy premiered, and soon everyone was repeating the best Napoleon Dynamite quotes to their friends. As with other irreverent teen comedies like Superbad and Juno, it wasnt afraid to focus on celebrating the socially awkward kids in high school. Nearly every scene provided a random assortment of inane hilarity, delivered with deadpan seriousness by every cast member. Because there was nothing ironic or tongue-in-cheek about the characters in general, the best Napoleon Dynamite quotes made the dialogue feel both absurd and absurdly real.

Napoleon Dynamite is endeared to an entire generation of audiences who came of age in the early 2000s. Jon Heder wants fans to know Napoleon is now even more awesome by showing off his new "upgrades."
Jared Hess' Napoleon Dynamite was a surprise hit at the global box office, earning almost $45 million within a year of release. The 2004 film remains a cult favorite because of its eclectic ensemble of characters, especially its titular character Napoleon (played by Jon Heder). The film ended on a promising note with Napoleon on good terms with Deb but it also begged for a sequel that never happened. Heder has since cameoed in character in talk shows and product commercials, but fans never really knew what happened to after the film's end credits. A short sketch on Jimmy Kimmel Live finally showed an older Napoleon, who is now physically jacked.

Napoleon Dynamite cast reunites to speculate on characters' futures, hinting at child support, legal tangles, political aspirations. Uncertain fate of Napoleon and Deb's relationship, Uncle Rico's YouTube legal troubles, Pedro running a law firm with Summer. Possibility of Napoleon Dynamite sequel hinted by Jon Heder, with Jon Gries suggesting a real-time, winter setting for film.
Napoleon Dynamite is celebrating its 20-year anniversary this year, and the cast recently got together to not only mark the occasion, but to speculate on where their beloved characters would be now. Released on June 11, 2004, the film has gone on to be regarded as one of the best comedies of the early aughts, and made Jon Heder a household name, paving the way for him to star in such films as The Benchwarmers, School for Scoundrels, and Blades of Glory. Produced on a budget of just $400,000, Napoleon Dynamite would go on to earn $46 million at the box office.

Napoleon Dynamite is 20 years old, but according to the movie’s cast, its lead characters probably aren’t doing so hot. “I think it's not looking very good for most of them,” laughed Jon Heder, the actor who played Napoleon, at a recent Q&a with fans.
The movie ends on a moment of triumph for Napoleon and Pedro, but in Heder’s view, it’s all downhill from there, according to a People report. “Napoleon is probably paying child support to two different moms, with two different kids,” Heder speculates. “Maybe Trisha was a fling. Like, ‘Let’s give it a go... No, I was right the first time.’”
Napoleon did end up dancing with Deb, Tina Majorino’s character, but Heder doesn’t have high hopes for that couple either. “It didn’t work out with Deb, but he really wants to make it work with Deb so he’s like,...

Two decades after the release of Napoleon Dynamite, fans can only imagine what the characters might be doing in 2024. Three stars of the hit comedy have offered their predictions on where their characters would be today.
Per People, a 20th anniversary screening for the film was held in Orlando, Florida, with attending actors Jon Heder (Napoleon), Efren Ramirez (Pedro Snchez), and Jon Gries (Uncle Rico). The actors shared predictions about the future of the characters they played in the film, though Heder guesses that it's not exactly going well. Deb is part of a trio of quirky high schoolers in 2004's Napoleon Dynamite. Deb, a shy friend of Napoleon, sells trinkets and offers glamour photos to pay for college. Tina Majorino, who played Deb, also starred in Veronica Mars, showcasing her versatility as an actress.
Deb in Napoleon Dynamite is one-third of the strangest and funniest trio of high schoolers that has ever appeared in an indie film. Released in 2004, Napoleon Dynamite is the quintessential quirky high school comedy that millennials are still quoting to this day. Its listless story, aimless characters, and general lack of conflict make it a hard film to grasp, yet, it's one of the funniest movies of the 2000s and an unexpectedly heartfelt story. It's almost like the Napoleon Dynamite filmmakers took a camera, planted it in Idaho, and just presented what they caught.

Twenty years ago, quirky indie comedy Napoleon Dynamite was untethered, giving the world a socially awkward teen to root for, a seemingly endless string of quotes and even a llama that just wouldn’t eat the ham. And while things worked out for the characters at the end of the movie, they may not have fared so well two decades later.
As Napoleon Dynamite star Jon Heder put it, “I think it’s not looking very good for most of them.” On where Napoleon himself is, Heder added, “Napoleon is probably paying child support to two different moms, with two different kids…maybe Trisha was a fling. Like, ‘Let’s give it a go…no, I was right the first time.’ It didn’t work out with Deb, but he really wants to make it work with Deb so he’s like, ‘I’ve gotta get some political sway to pull some cool favors.

I’ll never forget the first time I saw Napoleon Dynamite. It was in a Montreal movie theater in the old Forum building (currently featured in the Queen IMAX doc Queen Rock Montreal). Due Justice is an intense revenge action movie about a former Marine seeking justice for the murder of his wife and brother and the kidnapping of his daughter. The film explores complex characters, like Ellis, who profit from dark organ black market activities, and Santiago, who struggles with his own career. Lead actors Jeff Fahey and Kellan Lutz brought professionalism and realism to their roles, making the director's job easier. The film features choreographed action scenes, with the most interesting being car stunts.
Due Justice follows Max, a former Marine whose life is turned upside down after he faces a devastating loss. After he finds his wife and brother murdered and his daughter missing, he sets out on a personal mission to kill the gang that annihilated his family. Due Justice is the latest film in the never-ending line of Taken wannabes where a former badass has to go back into action to rescue their kidnapped daughter. In this case, it’s Max an attorney who, along with his boss Claire are lawyers celebrating winning their latest case when Max hears a familiar voice from across the restaurant.
It’s his brother Jerry who isn’t happy to see him, probably due to the company he’s dining with. As it turns out, Jerry was undercover for the FBI and that meeting triggered the suspicion of Ellis, Roxy and their crew. It’s not long before both Jerry and Max’s wife are dead, and his daughter abducted while he’s at the office working late.
