There aren't any filmmakers who want their movies to lose money and fade into obscurity, so it's probably comforting to know that the streaming era can give flops a new lease of life. Recently, John Cena and Alison Brie's "Freelance" soared to the top of Netflix's charts — two years after it bombed at the box office and got put on blast by critics. Similarly, Nicole Kidman's "Holland" has been killing it on Prime, despite being embraced with predominant negativity upon release.
What's more, some forgotten blasts from the past are also resonating with modern audiences. According to FlixPatrol, Brett Ratner's "After the Sunset" — a heist comedy starring Pierce Brosnan and Salma Hayek released in 2024 — has crept into Netflix's top 10 on August 5, sitting alongside some of the streaming service's original hits like "Happy Gilmore 2" and the animated gem "K-Pop Demon Hunters."

Don Zimmerman, a veteran film editor who scored an Oscar nom for Coming Home and worked on dozens of other movies including Being There, The Prince of Tides, Night at the Museum and two Rocky sequels, died July 24 of acute myeloid leukemia at his Studio City home. He was 81.
American Cinema Editors, the group that gave him a Career Achievement Award in 2023, confirmed the news.
Born in 1944 and nicknamed “Big D,” Zimmerman joined the Air Force during the Vietnam War and began working odd jobs — Western Electric, gas stations, insurance — after his discharge. A friend recommended he try being an assistant in show business, which led first to working as a sound editor.
“Then Jimmy, the assistant friend of mine, was working with Hal Ashby,” Zimmerman said in a 2023 interview with Ace’s Cinema Editor magazine. “Hal had just moved from editor to a director by Norman Jewison, and they needed a second assistant editor.

Before directing X-Men: First Class, director Matthew Vaughn was hired as Bryan Singer's replacement on X-Men: The Last Stand; Singer went off to direct Superman Returns for Warner Bros. instead. Vaughn eventually dropped out of the project as well, and was replaced by the now-cancelled Brett Ratner. The Last Stand remains one ofthe least-liked installments of the original X-Men trilogy, which, in many ways, shaped modern superhero cinema. It was a hit, but it was also unusually expensive. The movie has now been overtaken by director James Gunn's less-than-two-week-old Superman at the domestic box office.
In just 10 days of release, Supermanhas grossed $236 million at the domestic box office, which puts it $2 million ahead of The Last Stand. Released in 2006, the X-Men film grossed $460 million worldwide, against a reported budget of $210 million. It was an extremely expensive film at the time, and didn't do nearly as well as it was expected to.

Greek — and Roman — myths remain fascinating to audiences, and no other proof is needed than to remember that Sir Christopher Nolan is bringing back "The Odyssey" with an all-star cast. Elsewhere, names may get jumbled or outright changed, due to the Roman Empire gradually cannibalizing (syncretizing) any and all religions they came across. While Egypt's mythology really got put through the wringer, Greeks saw their Gods changed as well: Zeus became Jupiter, Ares became Mars, etcetera, regardless of how well the legends fit. But centuries later, the Greeks returned to prominence, helped in no small part by how well these stories could use the new wave of special effects and color film.

Fans Cry Foul After Beloved 90s Classic Gets a Trigger Warning for 'Outdated' and 'Offensive' Comedy
Undeniably, the state of comedy in film has changed over the past three decades, and many movies have been retroactively criticized for jokes that would come under fire today. This has led to the 90s buddy cop movie Rush Hour getting a new trigger warning upon its recent airing on the USA Network.
"We all love our 90's buddy comedies... but this movie was created in a different time," the trigger warning stated. "Fyi: Certain depictions, language and humor may seem outdated and at times offensive."

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's a new Superman movie! DC Comics' flagship hero once again takes flight in James Gunn's universe re-launching blockbuster, which arrives in multiplexes on July 11 after years of false starts at getting a new Man of Steel-led feature film into production.
That's nothing new for this particular superhero franchise, though. Multiple live-action Superman feature films have soared headlong into dead ends in the decades since Richard Donner and Christopher Reeve first made audiences believe a man could fly on the big screen in 1978. Even the involvement of big-name directors like Tim Burton and George Miller or famous faces like Jude Law and Nicolas Cage couldn't overcome the Kryptonite that is development hell.
While the Last Son of Krypton isn't a regular presence at the Oscars — and Gunn's take likely won't change that — some of those never-made movies boasted elements that could have made them awards players.

It’s no secret that a number of comedies from the ‘80s and ‘90s have aged about as well as a carton full of eggnog sitting in a hot car that’s being driven by Mel Gibson. Still, some movie fans were seemingly shocked, appalled and enraged by the mere suggestion that 1998’s Rush Hour, starring Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker, doesn’t 100 percent hold up today.
Social media users complained en masse that a recent airing of the film on the USA Network contained a pre-show disclaimerm which many people labeled a “Trigger Warning,” purely “because of Gen Z.” And if there’s one thing we know about Gen Z, it’s that they have a stranglehold on the cable TV industry.

Olivia Munn revealed on an episode of Dax Shepherd’s “Armchair Expert” podcast (via The Daily Beast) that a director she worked with on HBO’s “The Newsroom” tried to “ruin” her career by preventing her from landing a movie role. The director, who remained unnamed, told the studio that Munn was “really combative” on set after the two shared disagreements on the set of the Aaron Sorkin-created television series.
“There was a storyline where my character and Tom Sadoski’s character are dating and falling in love,” Munn explained. “[The director] kept trying to force me to carry that storyline only on my side. He’s like, ‘Can you look out at him and smile?’ And I’m like, ‘Why she’s busy doing this?’ Or, ‘Can you stop and snuggle up to him or flirt with him?’ Or, ‘Can you give him a kiss?’ And I’m like, ‘This...

Since the Marvel Cinematic Universe wrapped up The Infinity Saga with "Avengers: Endgame" and "Spider-Man: Far From Home" (and Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox) in 2019, Marvel Studios has slowly started to introduce the X-Men into the MCU. Characters with mutant connections such as Patrick Stewart's Professor X, Kelsey Grammer's Beast, and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine have been popping up in the phases that followed. Plus, True Believers were able to return to the fan-favorite world of "X-Men: The Animated Series" thanks to "X-Men '97" on Disney+. Now, after the initial casting announcement for the highly anticipated "Avengers: Doomsday," the mutant presence is about to increase exponentially.
But before we enter a new era for the X-Men and a thriving cinematic future for mutantkind, let's look back on the legacy that previous X-Men movies have left behind. Here is /Film's ranking of X-Men movies that have been theatrically released so far.

While Jackie Chan's Hong Kong action movies were huge overseas, it wasn't until the mid '90s when he really started to capture the attention of American audiences. It's easy to see why his magnetic presence carried over considering his stunt work was (and still is) jaw-droppingly impressive. Couple Chan's popularity with the rising star power of Chris Tucker and you have the "Rush Hour" franchise, a trilogy of globe-spanning action comedies that revitalized the buddy comedy for a new generation.
Hong Kong Chief Inspector Lee (Jackie Chan) would clash with the loud-mouthed LAPD Detective James Carter (Chris Tucker) as they found themselves getting into all sorts of explosive hijinks. A lot of the back-and-forth humor stemmed from the pair commenting on their various culture shocks, which certainly places these movies in the period in which they were made. Much like the actors who play James Bond, Spider-Man, or Batman, securing the gig of Superman is a pretty big deal. The world's attention lasers in on the chosen one, as everything about the person is dissected and scrutinized in full public view. "He's not tall enough." "Where's the curl in his hair?" "Are those real muscles?" "Why doesn't he look like the actors playing Pa and Ma Kent?" Yes, the last one is a hilariously real comment posted on social media about David Corenswet's Clark Kent, and if you know, you know. Hopefully, the paycheck for this role more than compensates the performers for having to deal with the constant tomfoolery surrounding it.
Then there are the actors who almost received the chance to put on the red cape, but it didn't happen for whatever reason. They're a rare breed who could have left their own mark on...

In 2014, three years before the #MeToo movement swept Hollywood, Kesha accused Dr. Luke of sexual assault and battery in a blistering lawsuit. Hours after that was filed, Dr. Luke fired back by suing Kesha, her mother and even one of her attorneys for defamation. Two years later, Bill Cosby pulled the same maneuver, countersuing seven of his accusers. While the ordeal was difficult enough for Kesha, a chart-topping music star, it was financially crushing for the Cosby accusers who were not public figures. For their part, Kesha and Dr. Luke reached a settlement in 2023, ending a battle that lasted nearly a decade and likely cost millions.
In the wake of the industrywide reckoning around sexual harassment in 2017, many observers anticipated that retaliatory defamation lawsuits would subside. Instead, the practice intensified, with a host of men — including Brett Ratner and more recently, Jay-Z — countersuing their accusers.

Fighting can be a good thing in the right context. For example, when you really believe in something, it's imperative to make your feelings known if that will help others see where you're coming from. Life requires us to step up and advocate for ourselves when we have some skin in the game, and that can extend across all the periods of life, from young to old. Just this week, Jackie Chan decided to take matters into his own hands with "Rush Hour 4," as he feels like the opportunity to make the sequel to the fan-favorite franchise might be slipping away. He's got one big request, and the producers should probably listen to him after how "Rush Hour 3" went, because it could end up making or breaking "Rush Hour 4" for everyone involved.

With Jackie Chan reprising one of his beloved roles for Karate Kid: Legends, the actor is ready to revisit more franchises.
The honorary Oscar winner recently commented on the long-gestating Rush Hour 4, for which he assured he’s still interested in reuniting with co-star Chris Tucker, more than 25 years after the original.
“I don’t know. Ask the director, ask the studio, ask the writer,” he told ScreenRant. “Hurry up! Otherwise, Chris Tucker and me [will be] 100 years old. We’ll be old men doing Rush Hour.”
In 2017, Chan said he and Tucker had finally agreed on a script for Rush Hour 4. The pair previously starred together in director Brett Ratner’s Rush Hour (1998), Rush Hour 2 (2001) and Rush Hour 3 (2007), which earned a combined $850 million worldwide.

Jackie Chan offers a hopeful update on Rush Hour 4. Despite having denied his involvement in the fourth movie in 2019, the actor confirmed that he was in talks to make the movie in 2022. Directed by Brett Ratner and released in 1998, the first Rush Hour movie starred Chan and Chris Tucker as Hong Kong Detective Inspector Lee and LAPD Detective James Carter, respectively. Director Guy Ritchie exploded onto the film scene back in 1998 with the frenetic "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels," a scrappy but earnest crime flick that established the young director's iconoclastic voice and propensity for bloke-forward, sweatily masculine stories. Ritchie's films are rarely elegant, and only look as polished as his budgets will allow. He tends to vaunt flippant, laidback protagonists, who would just as soon fire up a bong with you than go on an adventure. His Sherlock Holmes was less a detective as a brilliant dude with his own man-cave and a membership to a fight club. In his "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.," when Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) released he had been drugged, he casually laid down on a couch, careful not to muss his hair; he knew what being drugged felt like. Even Ritchie's King Arthur (Charlie Hunnam), in the ultra-bomb "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword,...

Stephen Colbert is backing Donald Trump on his claim that Melania has not been seen around the White House because she’s a “very private person.” Last Sunday, Trump gave “Meet the Press” journalist Kristen Welker that explanation when asked about his wife’s absence.
“Yeah, she’s a very private person who has film crews following her around for the $40 million documentary about her life,” Colbert said on Thursday night’s episode of “The Late Show.”
Melania Trump is currently filming a documentary for Amazon Prime Video that promises to be a behind-the-scenes look at her life that’s directed by Brett Ratner. “The New Avengers” director Jake Schreier is in early talks to direct “X-Men,” Marvel Studios introduction of the mutant superhero team in the MCU.
“Hunger Games” writer Michael Lesslie wrote the screenplay.
The “X-Men” film franchise began in 2000 with “X-Men,” directed by Bryan Singer. This first film introduced audiences to the concept of mutants – humans born with genetic superpowers – and focused on the leader of the X-Men, Professor Charles Xavier, and the metal-clawed Logan/Wolverine, as they attempt to make peace with their rival Magneto. It was praised for its serious, character-driven take on the superhero genre.
Its sequel, “X2” (2003), built on the foundation of the first film, allowing for more mutant heroes and villains to appear while exploring Wolverine’s mysterious past. “X2” was an even bigger critical and commercial success, further establishing the “X-Men” as a powerful superhero franchise able to stand alongside the likes of Superman and Batman.

Like any workplace, tensions can get pretty high on Hollywood sets. Actors and crew members are often working long hours day after day to create something that is the singular vision of one person: the director. When that vision isn't clear enough for everyone to see, or that director is maybe not a healthy collaborator, things can come to a head very quickly. That's why there's a stereotype of directors being very controlling, argumentative, and narcissistic, given that, in the case of most studio films, there's a lot of responsibility on their shoulders to make a good film.
We've all heard stories about famous actors who refuse to work with each other, despite the on-screen chemistry their characters displayed. However, fewer people know the dirty details about actors who hated working with certain directors, whether it be a matter of personalities clashing, actors not being invested in the project, or...

Robert Snow, a veteran Secret Service agent who served as a technical adviser on films including In the Line of Fire, The American President and Air Force One, died March 22, his family announced. He was 93.
Snow had retired after spending 33 years with the Secret Service when he was called on for his expertise during the making of Wolfgang Petersen’s In the Line of Fire (1993), starring Clint Eastwood as a CIA agent haunted by the JFK assassination.
“In Taxi Driver and other films, we were portrayed as monosyllabic idiots who can’t complete a full sentence and [only] stand on the corners with dark glasses,” Snow told the Chicago Tribune in a 1997 interview. “Until In the Line of Fire, there was nothing to show what the Secret Service really did.”

Matt Bomer is a beloved, profoundly handsome actor.
Whether you know him from White Collar or Magic Mike or Doom Patrol or Fellow Travelers or Mid-Century Modern, his dazzling smile is now a familiar sight.
That was not always the case. Bomer was not always famous. And while he never truly hid who he is, he was not always out as gay.
In fact, there was a time when rampant speculation about his sexuality cost him jobs — and robbed him of the opportunity to come out on his own terms.

There’s something about Edward Norton that sets him apart. He doesn’t just play a character—he disappears into it. Every performance feels raw, lived-in, and totally believable, like he’s not acting at all. Whether he’s a troubled narrator, a reformed neo-Nazi, or a genius with a secret, Norton brings layers and intensity that few actors can match. He’s built a career on complexity, always choosing roles that leave a mark. Honestly, he’s not just part of modern cinema—he’s helped shape it.
Blowing up in the late 90s with a string of Oscar-worthy performances, Norton quickly became the guy directors had to work with. He’s teamed up with visionaries like David Fincher, Tony Kaye, and Wes Anderson, shared the screen with legends like Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins, and delivered some of the most iconic performances that created a shift in the world of filmmaking.

While the seeds had been planted in previous Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) projects like The Marvels, finding out how many legacy heroes would be appearing in Avengers: Doomsday was still exciting. The viral casting announcement, which consisted of five hours of chairs being put in front of the camera to announce the cast of the upcoming team-up film, was filled with plenty of surprises. Besides confirming that characters from Thunderbolts* and Fantastic Four: First Steps would be in Doomsday, there was also the reveal that many of the original X-Men from Bryan Singer and Brett Ratner's trilogy would return. One such character is Nightcrawler, brought to life by Alan Cumming, who has now expressed his excitement about returning to the role.
While talking to Jenna Bush Hager and Olivia Munn (also an X-Men alum) on the Today show, Cumming briefly touched on his return as the teleporting mutant. Besides...

The original “X-Men” featuring Patrick Stewart as Professor Charles Xavier, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique and James Marsden as Cyclops, are set to return in “Avengers: Doomsday,” Marvel Studios announced on Wednesday.
Additionally, Kelsey Grammer will return as Beast, who most recently cameoed in “The Marvels” and previously starred in” X-Men: The Last Stand” at 20th Century Fox. The company made the announcement as part of a livestream revealing the cast for the upcoming film. Production kicks off in London next month.

In the absence of Bryan Singer, who took off to DC to helm Superman Returns, director Brett Ratner had some huge shoes to fill with The Last Stand, which was coming off the success of two revered releases. But unlike X-Men and X2, which heavily contributed to the superhero boom of the 2000s, the threequel marked a low point for the franchise.

But when Singer finally returned to the series to direct one of its most important entries, he was adamant about fixing the shortcomings of the infamous threequel.

Eight years ago, tech billionaire Jeff Skoll clapped enthusiastically as Al Gore assuaged the opening-night Sundance crowd just hours before Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th president. “We will win,” Gore said after the Skoll-backed climate change documentary “An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power” made its world premiere. “We want this movie to recruit others.”
But a funny thing happened over the ensuing years. The founder and chair of Participant Media appears to have defected to the other side. In January, on the weekend Trump was sworn in as the 47th president, Skoll hosted both the Make America Great Again Victory Rally and the inaugural parade, sending shockwaves through the indie film world. (Skoll declined comment.)

First Lady Melania Trump attended an annual ball in Washington, D.C., after being absent for four weeks.
On Feb. 22, Melania reappeared at an annual dinner with America’s governors. She was dressed in a sharp, businesslike tuxedo and walked into the candlelit East Room to the tune of “Hail to the Chief,” smiling next to her husband, President Donald Trump.
“She worked very hard on making sure that everything was beautiful,” Trump stated in the East Room while his wife sat at a nearby table covered with white hydrangeas and tulips. “And she’s very good at that.”
Her long absence had some people in Washington speculating if she had retired from first lady duties altogether. Since her husband’s second inauguration on Jan. 20, Melania has spent a short amount of time at the White House.
She made a brief appearance in North Carolina and California on Jan. 24 to examine disaster-stricken areas.

Melania Trump made a rare public appearance in Washington, D.C., after a four-week absence, attending a White House dinner and reception with the nation’s governors. The first lady, who has spent much of her time in Florida and New York since her husband returned to office, was praised by President Donald Trump for her role in organizing the event.
“Melania has done a beautiful job making everything look perfect tonight,” Trump said at the event, acknowledging her contributions.
Despite her early involvement in the administration, Melania has maintained a low profile, fueling speculation about her limited presence in Washington. Sources close to the family suggest she prefers to stay in New York, where their son, Barron Trump, is attending college.
Though she previously stated she would return to D.C. when needed, Melania has been notably absent from high-profile engagements, including meetings with world leaders and key legislative signings.

Dr. Hannibal Lecter has been part of our pop-culture consciousness since 1981 when author Thomas Harris invented him in the pages of his psychological horror novel, Red Dragon. Since then, Dr. Lecter's appearances have crisscrossed different mediums, including film and television, turning this serial killer with a taste for human flesh into one of the most memorable villains of the modern-day era.
Most general audiences will know Hannibal Lecter best, thanks to the Academy Award-winning The Silence of the Lambs. Anthony Hopkins took home the Oscar for his incredible performance in that film as the deranged sociopath toying with the young FBI trainee Clarice Starling under the pretense of helping her catch the equally menacing Buffalo Bill. As good as that film unquestionably is, the unique nature of Hannibal Lecter's depravity has led to other successful adaptations.

Just over a decade ago, director Renny Harlin introduced audiences to The Legend of Hercules and probably quickly wished he hadn’t. The film arrived in January 2014 with a substantial $70 million budget and an action-focused cast led by Kellan Lutz, Scott Adkins, Gaia Weiss, and Liam McIntyre. Although the line-up seemed to scream big action, the critics came in like an almighty Cyclops and crushed the film to dust. But, 10 years is a long time, and now a whole new audience is discovering The Legend of Hercules on Freevee.
The film’s story centers on Hercules (Lutz), born from a tryst between the mortal Queen Alcmene and the god Zeus. The boy becomes a man, a formidable warrior, and one burdened by a prophecy that threatens to unravel the power held by King Amphitryon (Adkins). When Hercules falls in love with Princess Hebe (Weiss), things get a little complex and...

The actress recently recounted the on-set incident that was “really not okay,” as she explained why she refused to take “a lot of money” in exchange for her silence about the behind-the-scenes moment.
“It was so traumatic that I had to file complaints with the studio,” she explained on Monica Lewinsky’s Reclaiming podcast. “But it got to this place where I was offered a lot of money. A lot of money — seven figures to accept I guess their apology and them taking acknowledgement of it. But it came along with an NDA.”
Munn continued, “And not that I would ever have talked about it, truly, because I just wanted to move past it all. That’s why I don’t want to talk about the specific...

Olivia Munn says she once refused at least a million dollars to agree to stay silent over a traumatic incident that took place on a movie set.
The New Girl and The Newsroom actress was talking to Monica Lewinsky for this week’s episode of her podcast Reclaiming (below), where she recalled the experience. While Munn didn’t detail the incident or name the film, she said it took place around the beginning of the #MeToo era, which got underway around 2017.
“There were things that happened on this movie set, personally to me, that were really not Ok and it was so traumatic that I had to file complaints with the studio,” Munn said. “It got to this place where I was offered a lot of money, a lot of money — seven figures — to accept their apology. But it came along with an NDA.”

“I had to file complaints with the studio, and there’s a lot of other little things that go along with it, but it got to this place where I was offered a lot of money,” Munn said (via E! Not that I ever would talk about it truly, because I wanted to move past it all. But I said I’m not signing an NDA, and they said I have to.”
