Founded in 2018 by industry veterans Will Gould, Matthew Read and Frith Tiplady, Moonage has quickly established itself as a go-to shop for original, high-end drama with global appeal. The company hit the streaming jackpot with “The Gentlemen,” Guy Ritchie’s small-screen spin-off that landed at Netflix’s #1 spot and became one of 2024’s most-watched series worldwide.

ITV Studios unveiled on Tuesday that it has acquired a majority stake in Moonage Pictures, one of the U.K.’s fastest-growing independent producers of high-end drama, including global hits The Gentlemen and A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder.

Moonage Pictures was established in 2018 by Will Gould, Matthew Read and Frith Tiplady. Its name is inspired by the David Bowie song “Moonage Daydream.”

The Gentlemen, directed by Guy Richie, debuted as Netflix’s top show and became one of the most-viewed TV shows of 2024. A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, adapted for the BBC and Netflix, made the streamer’s global top-10 most-watched list.

Other production credits include Bodies, starring Stephen Graham, for Netflix; Emily Mortimer’s adaptation of The Pursuit of Love for BBC One and Amazon; The Famous Five for the BBC, co-created with Nicolas Winding Refn; Curfew for Sky One; Netflix’s Obsession; and sci-fi series Intergalactic for Sky One.

ITV Studios has bought A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder producer Moonage Pictures.

The ITV production-distribution arm has taken a majority stake in Will Gould, Matthew Read and Frith Tiplady’s drama outfit, which also co-produced The Gentlemen and Netflix’s The Leopard. International distribution of new Moonage Pictures shows will be handled by ITV Studios.

Deadline had revealed several months back that Moonage was on the sales block. BBC Studios previously had a minority interest in the company, which it took upon launch in 2018. There was understood to have been plenty of interest in Moonage and the sale had generated chatter in UK TV M&a and production circles. Turnover and post-tax profits soared last year to £89M ($115M) and £6.8M respectively, according to Moonage’s latest Companies House filing.

The BBC, Moonage Pictures and Nicolas Winding Refn have begun production on a second season of “The Famous Five.” The 2 x 90′ instalment, created for television and executive produced by Refn and Matthew Read of Moonage, follows the success of the first series, which saw its premiere become Cbbc’s top-rated episode in 2023. The series, based on Enid Blyton‘s books, continues to follow the young protagonists’ adventures, now set against the backdrop of wartime.

The new season comprises two episodes: “Mystery at the Prospect Hotel,” directed by Asim Abbasi, and “Big Trouble on Billycock Hill,” helmed by Tom Vaughn. Both directors also serve as executive producers alongside Refn and Read.

Serving as a spinoff to the 2019 film of the same name, The Gentlemen hit the streaming service earlier this year, quickly finding its audience, which helped it amass a total of 44 million views during its first month. Featuring eight episodes in total, the series stars Theo James, Kaya Scodelario, Giancarlo Esposito, and Ritchie mainstay Vinnie Jones, to name a few.

Per Variety, The Gentlemen Season 2 will see the return of James and Scodelario, with Ritchie also returning as writer/director alongside co-writer Matthew Read. Theres no word yet on who else will be joining the new season, and filming is expected to get underway next year, so we still have a long wait ahead of us before it premieres. The first season of The Gentlemen introduced James as Eddie Horniman as he unexpectedly became the new Duke of Halstead after inheriting his father’s sizable country estate. Netflix has renewed Guy Ritchie’s series The Gentlemen for a second season. Stars Theo James, Kaya Scodelario and Daniel Ings will be back to reprise their roles for the eight-episode second installment of the hit series, created by Ritchie based on his movie and produced by Miramax Television. Ritchie, who earned an Emmy nomination for his directing work in Season 1, will return to direct. He is writing again with Matthew Read.
