Paul Mescal continues to emerge as one of the finest young actors working today. The Irish actor rose to fame for his lead role in the BBC/Hulu miniseries Normal People, for which he earned an Emmy nomination. From there, Mescal transitioned to film with his feature debut in The Lost Daughter and quickly earned his first Academy Award nomination for his quietly devastating performance as a troubled father in A24's Aftersun. He also starred in the LGBTQ+ romance All of Us Strangers, earning a BAFTA nomination for his performance.
However, for his first major action blockbuster, Mescal carefully chose Ridley Scott's Gladiator II, playing the lead role of Lucius, the son of Russell Crowe's Maximus. Despite expanding to big-budget filmmaking, Mescal hasn't lost his identity as an actor and continues to opt mostly for smaller, independent projects that showcase his subtle sensibilities as an actor. Paul Mescal reflected on masculinity in film during the Cannes press conference for “The History of Sound,” saying that he thinks cinema is “moving away” from alpha male roles. Mescal stars in Oliver Hermanus’ gay romance alongside Josh O’Connor, with the two playing musicians who travel to New England together in the summer of 1919 to record the folk songs of their rural countrymen.
“It’s ever shifting,” he said. “I think maybe in cinema we’re moving away from the traditional, alpha, leading male characters. I don’t think the film is defining or attempting to redefine masculinity, I think it is being very subjective to the relationship between [their characters] Lionel and David.”
The actor also spoke out against comparisons of the film to “Brokeback Mountain,” calling them “lazy and frustrating.” Several reviews of “The History of Sound,” including Variety‘s, drew a connection between the two films.

Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor made Cannes Film Festival sob on Wednesday night with Oliver Hermanus’ “The History of Sound,” which earned a six-minute standing ovation.
While Mescal received a standing ovation when walking in, O’Connor had to miss the premiere because he was finishing filming his part in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming film and couldn’t make it.
Though O’Connor wasn’t present, Mescal carried the weight. One rowdy fan screamed, “We love you, Paul!” seconds before the film started, when the audience usually sits in reverent silence. By the end, moviegoers were weeping and swatting at each other trying to get video of Mescal, who was also tearing up.
“This has been one of the most wonderful creative collaborations of my very, very short career, but this has been a testament to the genius of Paul Mescal,” said director Hermanus.

It takes a lot for a movie to be considered a masterpiece, and the standards are even higher when the film falls into the fantasy genre. Since speculative fiction isn't an immediate hit with all audiences, the special effects, characters, and plot must all work seamlessly for the project to connect with everyone who watches the movie. The films that fit the bill are some of the most influential and groundbreaking and are frequently cited and referenced in contemporary works. Every decade holds unique and mesmerizing additions to the genre that will capture the hearts and minds of viewers.
Sometimes, these movies are fantasy box office flops that deserve better and aren't recognized for their skill and talent until long after these films have premiered. However, with many of them, the merit is immediately obvious to audiences and critics alike. Despite this, it takes more than accolades and monetary achievements...

Mike Mignola’s award-winning comic franchise “Hellboy” has been adapted into four motion pictures now, and this may be a controversial statement, but there’s never been a bad one. Guillermo del Toro’s “Hellboy” movies were ambitious and beautiful, especially “The Golden Army,” which ranks among his finest works. Neil Marshall’s “Hellboy” reboot stripped away the classiness and focused instead on the series’ freewheeling wildness, an unfocused but enjoyably weird adaptation. It isn’t popular but that doesn’t make it bad. Give it time. It’ll find its audience.
The new reboot, Brian Taylor’s “Hellboy: The Crooked Man,” will need more than time to find its fanbase. The cheapest entry in the series (by a wide margin) was released in Europe to little fanfare a month ago, then dumped on VOD in the United States this week when nobody was looking. Although Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland are loved as the web-slingers in their own respective places, Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man was just a bit different. Maybe it was his physique or just his impeccable performance in the role, but what can’t be denied is just how distinctive his version of Peter Parker was — something that further made fans yearn for his unmade third installment.

That being said, the third installment in his film series would have unarguably further explained the greatest mystery related to his friendly neighborhood superhero. But since the film never came to be, fans thought it better to ask Garfield to unwind that mystery. However, as surprising as it may be, it turns out that even the 40-year-old actor is as much in the dark about this as everyone else!

Spider-Man movies have had surprising plot twists that rival the twists in the original Marvel comics. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 set up the Sinister Six, but the twist was never explored due to the franchise pivot. Spider-Man: No Way Home had a major twist with Peter Parker detecting Green Goblin's true nature, leading to the tragic death of Aunt May.
There are some pretty shocking plot twists in Spider-Man movies. From the Sam Raimi-directed movies starring Tobey Maguire to the MCU trilogy with Tom Holland, there are several surprising moments that have happened on the big screen. Additionally, many of them rival some of the biggest twists on the page seen in the original Marvel Comics.
As it stands, there are 10 Spider-Man feature films that have been released since 2002 with multiple actors including Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland as the most recent version of a live-action Spider-Man.

Movie adaptations of classic texts can be disappointing. Transitioning from one form to the next is dangerous, particularly when nothing original arises from the outgoing medium. Sometimes it’s as if the filmmakers have left the camera pointed at a stage-play or between the pages of a book. But the 1958 film adaptation of Look Back in Anger is a masterful translation of John Osborne’s (now-)classic play – incorporating the essence of the newly-emerging British New Wave and continuing the legacy of the “angry young men” literary movement.
Set in the grey and wet city of Derby, sweet-seller Jimmy Porter (Richard Burton) lives with his wife Alison (Mary Ure) and best friend Cliff (Gary Raymond). He is a stern, explosive individual – consistently aggressive and searingly misogynistic, even by the standards of 1958. Alison feels tired and trapped by him, never finding the right opportunity to say she’s carrying his child.

Charlton Heston movies: ‘A Man for All Seasons’ remake, ‘The Greatest Story Ever Told’ (photo: Charlton Heston as Ben-Hur) (See previous post: “Charlton Heston: Moses Minus Staff Plus Chariot Equals Ben-Hur.”) I’ve yet to watch Irving Rapper’s melo Bad for Each Other (1954), co-starring the sultry Lizabeth Scott — always a good enough reason to check out any movie, regardless of plot or leading man. A major curiosity is the 1988 made-for-tv version of A Man for All Seasons, with Charlton Heston in the Oscar-winning Paul Scofield role (Sir Thomas More) and on Fred Zinnemann’s director’s chair. Vanessa Redgrave, who plays Thomas More’s wife in the TV movie (Wendy Hiller in the original) had a cameo as Anne Boleyn in the 1966 film. According to the IMDb, Robert Bolt, who wrote the Oscar-winning 1966 movie (and the original play), is credited for the 1988 version’s screenplay as well. Also of note,...
