Former Doctor Who star throws shade at current state of the franchise
Image
Back when the BBC struck a deal with Disney to bring Doctor Who to Disney+, allowing the show to be made with American money, it was very exciting. The rebooted series even brought back showrunner Russell T Davies, who ushered in the 'New Who' era back in the 2000s.

Ncuti Gatwa's run as the Fifteenth Doctor was largely hit and miss. By the end of his second season, he regenerated into our new Sixteenth Doctor, played by none other than Billie Piper, who previously played the Doctor's companion Rose Tyler. It does sometimes feel like the show is constantly setting up the next event. Or as former star Peter Davison (who played the Fifth Doctor from 1982-84) says, it's like watching a big trailer.

"It’s like watching a trailer for a Doctor Who show you’d like to watch later," Davison said during an appearance on The Lewis Nicholls Show.

Well, in the latest suggestion of the show's future, one of its more recent stars is offering a defiant stand against cancellation rumors. Varada Sethu and Ncuti Gatwa in Doctor Who (2023)
Doctor Who is getting an animated spin-off alongside the BBC’s 5-part Unit special starring Jemma Redgrave’s Kate Stewart
Varada Sethu and Ncuti Gatwa in Doctor Who (2023)
Take your fish sticks out of the fryer and whip up a bowl of custard because the Whoniverse is expanding as the BBC announces another Doctor Who spin-off! Amidst speculation about Doctor Who’s cancellation after the latest season of the timeless BBC TV series underperformed, the BBC says it’s moving forward with a preschool-style animated Doctor Who series. The untitled show finds the Doctor traveling through time, solving mysteries and problems alongside their companions and other friends. The show will run on the BBC’s pre-school channel CBeebies.

According to reports, the BBC is searching for a “passionate production company” to produce a project that does not conflict with the core show’s events or storylines. More interestingly, Disney, which co-produces the Bad Wolf and BBC Studios-produced main version with showrunner Russell T. Davies, will not be involved with the animation.

Commenting on the animated Doctor Who TV series project,...

A New ‘Doctor Who’ Spin-Off Has Been Announced — With a Timey-Wimey Twist
Image
As the days continue to pass since its controversial Season 2 finale, it seems increasingly likely that the lackluster Disney era of Doctor Who is going to end with a whimper. Russell T. Davies' second era at the helm has found itself in the middle of a storm of speculative rumors, as the future of the timey-wimey series remains in doubt. However, the latest news from the BBC instead points to the likelihood that Doctor Who's "Whoniverse" will continue to expand at pace, although Disney are likely to get booted out of the Tardis for good.

The War Between The Land And The Sea Trailer: BBC Teases Epic Conflict In Doctor Who Spin-Off
Image
'The Reality War' has been. Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor is gone. Jason Statham's 'The Beekeper' Gets 2/10 For Realism From Navy Seal
Image
Jason Statham's The Beekeeper seemingly came out of nowhere in 2024 to be a cult action hit. Directed by David Ayer (Fury), the film stars Statham as Adam Clay, a.k.a. The Beekeeper, a member of a secret government group of assassins who seeks vengeance on a criminal empire run by corporate suits and even pollenticians. The film also stars Jeremy Irons, Josh Hutcherson, Taylor James, Jemma Redgrave, and Minnie Driver. Action fans love Jason Statham's high-kicking, over-the-top style of action. But a real Navy Seal wasn't as impressed with the movie and gave it a score for realism that's got to sting.

DJ Shipley is a former Navy Seal who sat down with Insider to watch close-quarters battle scenes from various action movies. The Beekeeper was one of the first films he was shown, and he immediately began dismantling the film. "Cqb is supposed to be formed in a team,...

Jason Statham's Sequel to 2024 Hit Action Film Gets New Exciting Update
Image
Jason Statham is a prolific and profitable action star whose films bring millions of dollars at the box office. In 2024, the actor teamed up with Suicide Squad director for The Beekeeper.

The action movie was a critical and commercial success, which led to them reuniting this year for A Working Man. However, considering how profitable The Beekeeper was, a sequel was granted. Now, Deadline reports that The Beekeeper 2 has received a major update as Amazon MGM Studios landed the worldwide distribution rights in a $50 million+ deal.

The move is hardly surprising, as the first entry in the franchise was also distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures through Amazon MGM Studios, with Miramax producing. The same team will produce and distribute the sequel as well, but The Beekeeper comes with a big change: David Ayer won't return to direct.

Instead, Jason Statham will team up with Nobody 2 director Timo Tjahjanto. Ayer's...

Doctor Who Season 2 Introduces The Most Chilling (And Realistic) Monster Of The Disney+ Era
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Doctor Who" season 2, episode 4 -- "Lucky Day."

Even during the cheesy and heartfelt Disney+ era of "Doctor Who," the show often highlights humanity's worst traits. It has introduced multiple toxic masculinity-themed villains like the power-hungry politician Roger ap Gwilliam (Aneurin Barnard) -- who's not-so-subtly coded as a domestic abuser among his other awful traits -- and Belinda Chandra's (Varada Sethu) possessive ex-boyfriend Alan Budd (Jonny Green). After "Doctor Who" season 2 brought back the show's most terrifying one-off monster, "Lucky Day" returns to the toxic masculinity well with a particularly malevolent and all-too-realistic example: Tiktok influencer Conrad Clark (played excellently by Jonah Hauer-King), an opportunistic content creator who'll sacrifice anyone on the altar of fame and fortune.

Ostensibly the head of citizen's journalism group Think Tank but really acting toward his own ends, Conrad gaslights Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) into a fraudulent alien attack scenario to...

An Unsettling Doctor Who Season 2 Episode Echoes One Of The Show's Most Controversial Hours
Image
The latest "Doctor Who" episode features precious little of the Doctor, nor does it feature much of his current companion Belinda. Instead, it's an Earth-bound story following former companion Ruby (Millie Gibson) as she gets into a relationship with a seemingly nice young man named Conrad (Jonah Hauer-King).

Conrad makes an odd first impression: his first scene shows him as a kid who rudely snatches a coin from the Doctor's hand despite the Doctor having happily offered it to him. But when we catch up to Conrad as an adult he seems to have mostly matured. He's started a wholesome podcast about the Doctor, and when he meets up with Ruby for the first time he acts like a nervous fanboy.

For the first half of this episode, it seems like the episode's writer, Pete McTighe, is aiming for the same spark as another famous Doctor-lite episode: "Love & Monsters." Although that episode is (rightfully!

‘Doctor Who’: Jonah Hauer-King Breaks Down Terrible Truth About Ruby’s Boyfriend Conrad
Image
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Doctor Who Season 2 Episode 4 “Lucky Day.”] Maybe Conrad (Jonah Hauer-King) was just too nice. It certainly seemed like Ruby (Millie Gibson) had not only found a boyfriend but one that she could be honest and talk about her adventures with the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) with in the latest episode of Doctor Who, only for it to turn out to all be a lie. Instead, Conrad was using Ruby and aiming to expose the “lies” of Unit regarding aliens, and Conrad still refused to believe the truth even when one, a Shreek, which had marked him as prey, took a bite out of his arm. Honestly? He deserved it for what he dared to say about Kate’s (Jemma Redgrave) father. But once locked up, he found himself brought briefly onto the Tardis for a confrontation with the Doctor. There, we found out why the Doctor was looking for Belinda (Varada Sethu...

Doctor Who — “Lucky Day” — Season 2 Episode 4 Spoiler Review and Recap
Image
One of the great things about a time travel show is that Doctor Who can jump around in time and space. “Lucky Day” does this better than most, allowing multiple companions and versions of the Doctor to appear throughout the episode. While Ncuti Gatwa does not get the spotlight this time out, Millie Gibson returns to give an excellent performance as Ruby Sunday. More time with Ruby is great news, and “Lucky Day” continues to touch on themes of hatred and disinformation from the first few episodes.

Doctor Who's Millie Gibson Teases a 'Mature and Stronger' Ruby Sunday

Millie Gibson's Ruby Sunday was the Doctor's companion in season one of Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor Who. She had a fascinating arc, but then it came to an end. However, she didn't leave the show entirely - she'll be back for a Season 2 episode, "Lucky Day."

Doctor Who Star Hits Back At "Doctor Woke" Claims: "[It] Means Inclusive, Progressive And That You Care"
Image
In the upcoming second season of Doctor Who, Andor star Varada Sethu returns to the series as the Doctor's new companion, Belinda Chandra.

Sethu recently caught up with Radio Times (via SFFGazette.com) and shared her thoughts on fans saying the long-running sci-fi series has gone "woke" with its inclusive casting (which has been at the forefront since Russell T. Davies returned to the show).

"Woke just means inclusive, progressive and that you care about people," she said. "And, as far as I know, the core of Doctor Who is kindness, love and doing the right thing."

The fact Sethu, who is British-Indian, is being paired with lead star Ncuti Gatwa means Doctor Who season 2 will be the first time two people of color have piloted the Tardis together since the series' creation. "Ncuti was like, 'Look at us. We get to be in the Tardis. We’re going to piss off so many people,...

Doctor Who Star Varada Sethu Explains Surprise Season 2 Casting

Doctor Who star Varada Sethu has addressed her whirlwind casting as the show's newest companion. The Andor star will play Belinda Chandra in Doctor Who's upcoming second season.

Sethu previously appeared in Doctor Who's first season episode "Boom" as the Anglican Army soldier Mundy Flynn but will be playing a completely different character in the show's season run. Varada Sethu Opens Up About Casting Process for Doctor Who Return

Davies as the series showrunner, this next installment will feature eight new episodes and a new companion. Now, we know what these new episode titles are called, hinting at what's to come in this "wibbly wobbly, timey wimey" British science fiction series.

According to the official Doctor Who website, Season 2's episode titles are "The Robot Revolution," "Lux," "The Well," "Lucky Day," "The Story & The Engine," "The Interstellar Song Contest," "Wish World," and "The Reality War." While the plot for most of these episodes remains unknown for the time being, it is safe to assume that the sixth episode takes inspiration from The Eurovision Song Contest. According to The Mirror, the episode in question is said to be the "most expensive" in the sci-fi series' 62-year history.

Image
Disney+ has shared a new trailer (via SFFGazette.com) for Doctor Who season 2 and it picks up with the Doctor and his new companion, Belinda Chandra, as they adventure across time and space.

From a futuristic 51st century to the 803rd Interstellar Song Contest to becoming animated characters, a first for the long-running sci-fi series, this next batch of episodes look like a lot of fun.

There's a great deal of intrigue surrounding Belinda, particularly as actor Varada Sethu played a different character, Mundy Flynn, in season 1. We expect that mystery to factor into this second batch of episodes along with the continued speculation surrounding Anita Dobson's Mrs. Flood.

In a new Radio Times interview, showrunner Russell T Davies touched on the speculation surrounding the show's future while reflecting on the 20th anniversary of its 2005 revival.

"It all felt terribly important. I’d loved Doctor Who all my life,...

Doctor Who Season 2 Trailer Teases The Doctor Getting (Literally) Animated
Image
Two seasons deep into this newest iteration of "Doctor Who," 15 since the revival series first kicked off, and a whopping 26 since the franchise first arrived back in 1963, the beloved sci-fi/fantasy series is about to go where it never has before: into another medium entirely. Ncuti Gatwa's casting as the newest Doctor and Varada Sethu's as the newest companion Belinda Chandra were both instant hits, but it wouldn't be proper "Who" without an unexpected twist or two. This time around, the joint BBC/Disney production is getting animated on us -- literally.

Whovians are certainly used to this show's usual premise, which involves the in-over-their-head companion getting swept up in the Doctor's fantastical adventures. Season 1 turned into a pleasantly surprising success (as seen in /Film's review here), with Russell T. Davies making his grand return as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. Season 2 is looking to keep the good...

Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has confirmed there are "conversations" under way about who will replace him on the show. Davies originally revived Doctor Who in 2005 and returned in 2023 for its 60th anniversary.

Davies previously confirmed that Disney's deal with the BBC was to co-produce three 60th anniversary specials and two full seasons with Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor, but that agreement will soon be coming to an end with the premiere of season 2 in April. There is no telling yet whether or not Disney will sign on to fund more episodes, or whether the BBC will have to look for new partners.

Jason Statham Will Be Back In The Beekeeper 2 — Timo Tjahjanto To Direct
Image
Spoiler Alert: Don't get stung — this article contains signposted spoilers for The Beekeeper.

Some buzzy news for your Friday morning! Following the global box office success of last year's David Ayer and Jason Statham action thriller The Beekeeper, The Stath's assassin-turned-apiarist-turned-assassin-again Adam Clay is set to make a busy (probably murderous) bee of himself once again in Miramax's The Beekeeper 2. And what's more, per Deadline's reporting, Indonesian action filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto is making a beeline for the director's hotseat and will be the man calling the shots on the upcoming sequel.

We know vanishingly little about what The Beekeeper 2, penned by the first movie's scribe Kurt Wimmer, will entail at this point, but we do know that cameras are due to start rolling on the sequel — which is sure to have a, er, sting in its tale — before the year is through. And while Ayer won't be at the helm for the follow-up,...

Jason Statham Will Return for The Beekeeper 2 (But With 1 Big Change)
Image
The Beekeeper 2 with Jason Statham is in the works at Miramax. Unfortunately, one member of the original movie's creative team will not be returning (at least in the same role) for the action sequel.

According to Deadline, David Ayer will not be returning as director for The Beekeeper 2, with Nobody 2 helmer Timo Tjahjanto tapped as his replacement. Ayer is currently busy filming the Brad Pitt-led movie The Heart of the Beast for Paramount. However, Miramax is hoping that Ayer will join the sequel in a producing capacity. Kurt Wimmer returned to write the screenplay for The Beekeeper 2, which is slated to begin production this fall. Amazon MGM Studios is expected to secure the sequel's domestic rights. The company previously handled distribution on the 2024 original.

'The Beekeeper 2' Is Happening With Jason Statham Set To Return
Image
Jason Statham kicking serious butt in movies is like a cozy warm blanket and the best kind of comfort food. You know exactly what you're getting and that's exactly why you're seated and prepared for a good time. The reliable action star rarely disappoints, and he certainly didn't with 2024's The Beekeeper, a January release that defied expectations and became a hit. Well folks, if you wanted more of Statham's Adam Clay human intelligence operative, the next bit of news should have you buzzing.

Per Deadline, Statham is officially returning for The Beekeeper 2 and cameras are set to roll beginning this fall. There are going to be some changes behind the scenes, however. David Ayer helmed the first film but now Nobody 2 filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto will be seated in the director's chair. Ayer not directing doesn't appear to be personal, as he's currently in production on the Paramount movie The Heart of Beast,...
