Review: Terry Gilliam’s Dystopian Masterpiece ‘Brazil’ on Criterion 4K Uhd Blu-ray
Image
Through its wildly comic, furiously creative, and intensely moving facade, Terry Gilliam’s 1985 film Brazil ponders a future made to sustain a draconian past molded by inequality. In this dystopia, the rich, having long knelt at the altar of radical capitalistic tyranny, spend their days having their flesh stretched, sliced, and injected with ultraviolet potions, while the working class types, files, signs, and stamps its way through pointless paperwork.

Overrun by communicative ducts, coated wires, cement and metals, and magnified, miniature computer screens, the future conjured up here averts the familiar prophecy of an anaesthetized, plastic world overrun by rampantly advancing technology. Indeed, men—who see such technology as an affront to their fiscal station and take the pecuniary gain of the morbid, perverse 1% as their modus operandi—unmistakably run the future of Gilliam’s film. New technology is expensive, and paper is cheap.

Sam Lowry (Jonathan Pryce) is in the thick of it,...

‘A Photographic Memory’ Review: A Filmmaker Looks Back at the Mother She Never Knew in a Poignant Documentary About Our Pictures of the Dead
Image
Filmmaker and photographer Rachel Elizabeth Seed doesn’t have any memories of her mother, the renowned journalist Sheila Turner Seed, who died of a brain hemorrhage at the age of 42 when Rachel was only 18 months old. What she does have — in tantalizing yet torturous amounts — is hard evidence of the woman her mother was. The array of archival materials that Sheila left behind might pale in comparison to the thoughtless gigabytes of pictures and videos that today’s parents will bequeath to their kids, but her ghost is all the more haunting for how warmly elusive it feels.

Sheila’s voice survives in the scripted audio programs she recorded for Scholastic, and in the candid diaries she kept throughout her adult life. Her visage endures in the black-and-white panel shows on which she appeared to discuss her work. Most of all, her vision can still be seen — clear as day...

Dreamland review: Lily Allen gives a grounded, understated performance in this brash and bold Margate sitcom
Image
Dreamland, like the Margate amusement park it’s named after, wears its brashness on its sleeve. Three minutes into the Sky Atlantic comedy, which is based on Sharon Horgan’s award-winning 2017 short, viewers have already been exposed to inflatable penises, a cannibalistic bunny, and, erm, “perineum oil”. But beneath the slapstick and cotton-candy hues, dark family secrets are lurking. There’s also commentary on class and race dynamics in British seaside towns. All of these elements play out to varying levels of success, but you can’t fault Dreamland for trying. Everything it does, it does with gusto.

It’s Trish’s (former Doctor Who companion Freema Agyeman) baby shower and the entire house, from the crystals to the TikTok-inspired chicken drumsticks, is pink. Wide-eyed and manic, Trish is desperate for a baby girl – hence the “manifestival” – and her partner Spence (the ever-excellent Kiell Smith-Bynoe) is happy to go along with it.
