Kajol Turns 51!
Image
Courtesy Kajol Instagram

Celebrating her birthday, Subhash K Jha turns the spotlight on the iconic Kajol, star of many brilliant films who is still going strong on reel and in real.

Tanuja was the spirited spontaneous embodiment of raw talent. So is her elder daughter Kajol who is to contemporary mainstream cinema what Jaya Bhaduri used to be the 1970s: effortlessly natural and unheedful of what the the mirror had to say. The glamorous avatar that we see now is a product of Manish Malhotra and Karan Johar’s influence. The two would incessantly remind Kajol that stars don’t dress and behave like…well, like Kajol.

She is one of her kind. Whenever Kajol is in the room her voice is heard above all other sounds. She is the din diva and the djinn that comes out of the bottle every time she lights up the screen.Kajol loves...

Tigmanshu Dhulia’s Trippy Tribute To Guru Dutt, Sahib Bibi Aur Gangster, Turns 14
Image
Subhash K Jha looks again at Tigmanshu Dhulia’s 2011 trippy Sahib Bibi Aur Gangster, a tribute to an iconic Guru Dutt film.

Sahib Bibi Aur Gangster is an audacious tongue-in-cheek homage to Guru Dutt’s timeless classic Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam. Don’t believe the director’s protestations to the contrary. Dhulia’s film even opens with an unabashed tribute to Guru Dutt’s film with skeletons being dug out during an excavation. There onwards there are plenty of skeletons tumbling out of secret places in the zamindar’s (Jimmy Sheirgill) bedroom and other workplaces, all leading to a series of climaxes, many of them aggressively sexual in nature.

Dhulia deconstructs and demystifies Meena Kumari’s alcohol-laden mysterious Choti Bahu from Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam. As played by Mahie Gill in Dhulia’s new-age deconstructed version of the classic film, the wife is a full-blooded sexually dissatisfied, curious and predatory...

Tanvi The Great Box Office Day 9 Update! ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Anupam Kher took over the directorial hat for the Hindi drama, Tanvi The Great. It was released in theatres worldwide on July 18, 2025, alongside the blockbuster Saiyaara. Unfortunately, Iain Glen co-starrer is struggling to drive audience in theatres and will be a box office bomb. Scroll below for a detailed day 9 report!

Tanvi The Great Box Office Collection

The pre-release buzz for the drama, starring Anupam Kher in the lead, was low. Things got more challenging, and it opened alongside Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda’s Saiyaara, which stole all the limelight. It still managed to add 40 lakhs to its box office collection on day 1. It showcased decent growth during the first weekend, but things went downhill with the initiation of the working days.

In the nine days of its theatrical run, Tanvi The Great has accumulated 2.03 crore net, as per Sacnilk.

Anupam Kher’s Directorial Debut Was Released In July 2002, The Same Week As His Tanvi The Great
Image
Subhash K Jha looks back at Anupam Kher’s directorial debut, Om Jai Jagdish, which released in July 2002. Interestingly, his new film Tanvi The Great is hitting the big screen now.

Om Jai Jagdish is as giddying and utopian as family sagas in films go. Three brothers Om (Anil Kapoor), Jai (Fardeen Khan) and Jagdish (Abhishek Bachchan), under the supervision of an ever-patient mother (Waheeda Rehman), try to transcend the inherent limitations of such families, but only superficially. To his credit Kher checks the narrative from lapsing into excessive melodrama. But a film cannot thrive on that alone.

In his determination to be mellow, rather than melodramatic, Kher denudes the narrative of all vigour and vitality. The audience might pine for high drama when world of the spunky mother Saraswati and her idealistic elder son Om begins to come apart. Middle son Jai’s worldly-wise wife (Urmila Matondkar) weans him away from home.

Subhash K Jha shares the best of actor Raj Kumar songs
Image
Subhash K Jha celebrates noted actor Raj Kumar by sharing a special playlist of some of his best musical sequences focussing not only on the performance by the actor, but also the brilliance of these songs.

1. ‘Neele gagan ke taley’ (Humraaz):

Raj Kumar’s rough-and-tough image often came in the way of his singing on screen. Not many know that this evergreen Mahendra Kapoor number was filmed on Raj Kumar. But he didn’t lip-sync it. It was placed in the background while Rk wooed the stoic Vimi. Weirdly Sunil Dutt who also had a macho image got to lip-sync several songs.

2. ‘Yeh duniya yeh mehfil’ (Heer Ranjha):

Thankfully, director Chetan Anand allowed Rk to lip-sync this Mohammad Raf-Madan Mohan memorabilia , with devastating impact. Heart-stopping thoughts on heartbreak.

3. ‘Hiya jarat raat din’ (Godaan):

It’s not everyday that an actor gets to lip-sync a song composed by...

When Karan Johar Preferred Mr India To His Father’s Film
Image
There is not a single person in the Hindi film industry whose face doesn’t light up at the mention of Yash Johar. There was much more to him than being Karan Johar’s son, although in his later years he introduced himself proudly as his son’s father.

Recalls Karan, “To my father there was no son better than me. He would launch into panegyrics about me in front of strangers and I would be so embarrassed. Whatever I am today, I owe it to my father. I am reaping the harvests of his goodwill in the film industry,”

Before he became an independent producer Yash Johar was a close associate of Dev Anand who had nothing but words of praise for Yash Johar.

“He started his journey in the film industry with me,” Dev Saab once told me. “He was loved by the entire industry. There was nothing...

Image
Subhash K Jha curates a special list of 8 brilliant films to watch for this festive weekend.

Silvat (2018):

Playing a Muslim darzi in Tanuja Chandra 40-minute film situated in the crowded gully of what looks like Mumbai’s Haji Ali locality, Kartik is every bit Anwar, the shy sensitive tailor who develops a secret passion for his favourite client: a lonely abandoned wife Noor (Meher Mistry) whose husband has migrated to Riyadh for a job with nary a glance back for the woman he has left behind. The focus of the passionate plot, pulsating with unspoken ardour, is Noor. But it’s Kartik’s Anwar who silently steals the show. There is no exhibition of outward passion here. And yet so much is said through Anwar’s eyes. Every stolen glance is laden with longing. The film is shot on location in a Muslim locality with streetside vendors frying parathas and malpuas,...

Remembering Sunil Dutt The First Truly Feminist Hero Of Hindi Cinema On His Birth Anniversary
Image
Sunil Dutt didn’t pretend to be a feminist. It came naturally to him. He would pick up his wife the great Nargis’s trailing gown from the floor as easily as he could play the reformist hero of his lovely leading lady Nutan in the fabulous Sujata. And when Nutan became the dominant spouse in Khandaan , Dutt Saab surrendered wholeheartedly to the mollycoddling.

In an interview conducted in the 1990s, Sunil Dutt told Subhash K Jha. “I didn’t think of these things, whether my role was more or less than my leading lady. In Mother India, Nargisji was the hero. I am thankful for the opportunity to play her son in Mother India, that’s how we met and became man and wife.”

Among all the screen heroes, Sunil Dutt was the only true feminist. While several leading men pretend to believe in gender equality their actions prove otherwise.

20 Years Without Sunil Dutt
Image
Shining the spotlight on the career of the incredible Sunil Dutt, Subhash K Jha walks down memory lane and hears from some of Dutt’s co-stars on why they thought he was so special.

“A true gentleman” is how the legendary Waheeda Rehman describes Sunil Dutt. “He was kind, considerate, and very supportive as a co-star. Dutt Saab ke baare mein jo tareef karen wohkam hai. All of us heroines felt very special in his presence. A wonderful friend, a devoted husband, and a terrific co-star, what more can any woman want? The films I did with Dutt Saab didn’t become big hits. But I cherished every moment of Reshma Aur Shera, which he directed. I even got the National Award for Reshma Aur Shera. Lekin National award unhe milni chahiye. Every frame in Reshma Aur Shera was Dutt Saab’s vision.”

Mohanlal’s Drishyam 3 Bilingual Release(Photo Credit –Prime Video/Facebook)

Earlier this year, it was confirmed that veteran actor Mohanlal will be coming back for Drishyam 3, which will be directed by franchise veteran Jeethu Joseph. But as per a recent Mid-Day report, the stakeholders of Mohanlal’s Drishyam 3 are now purportedly planning a pan-India release for the film’s next instalment. In other words, the makers plan for a bilingual release in Malayalam and Hindi.

After the much-talked-about Drishyam 3 update, many film enthusiasts and cinephiles expressed their concern that the move might adversely affect the prospects of Ajay Devgn’s upcoming Drishyam sequel. Subhash K Jha celebrates Sudhir Mishra’s 2005 centerpiece Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi that starred Shiney Ahuja, Chitrangda Rao, and Kay Kay Menon. We also hear from Mishra, who says, “I was born to make Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi,” and delves more into the creation of a film that he says changed him.

Death, says one song in this remarkably dense and evocative film, is akin to love. It sure seems like death for Vikram (Shiney Ahuja) every time Geeta (Chitrangda Rao) looks at her idol-lover Sidharth (Kay Kay Menon). And death sure feels like a renewal and assertion of life every time Sudhir Mishra makes a new film. His outstanding understanding of the complex polemics and politics that motivate the mysteries and contradictions of modern Indian society has given us great pieces of alternative art in the past, including the unusual thriller Iss Raat Ki Subah Nahin, where the characters ran around...

The Stree franchise has created a lot of buzz among audiences and has emerged as the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2024. While the movie continues to entertain audiences on digital platforms, a new controversy has stirred up a storm among the fans of Shraddha Kapoor.

According to India Today, the late Manoj Kumar stated at the time, “I am hurt. Shah Rukh Khan has injured my soul. It’s a conspiracy to humiliate and ridicule me. This is not filmmaking…My devotion to filmdom for...

This Day That Year: Revisiting Gulzar’s Namkeen As It Completes 43 Years
Image
Subhash K Jha revisits Gulzar’s Namkeen (1982) and as a bonus, he includes a conversation with the director who takes us inside the story, the actors and the music in this fascinating installment of This Day That Year.

Perhaps the timing was wrong. Or as Munnabhhai would say, ‘Isska to good luck hi kharaab tha.’ But Gulzar’s Namkeen and its dew-drop tenderness compounded by a compelling resilience of spirit, flowery in its fragility and steely in its strength, failed to evoke a favourable response at the boxoffice.

It came during the year when the Bachchan wave swept across the box office with Namak Halaal, Khuddar, and Shakti. It was also the year when two female-oriented films, Nikaah and Prem Rog, did exceedingly well. Namkeen tragically failed to form a trio of successful ladies’ pictures in 1982.

A pity!

Gulzar Saab loves the film, just as one favours the child who...

Must Watch Films For Eid
Image
Bollywood cinema has always been known for its spirit of celebration. Singing, dancing, and having a good time has been an important part of the Bollywood experience. Here are the five festive films that must be seen this Eid.

1. Hum Saath Saath Hain:

While most would opt for Sooraj Barjatya’s Hum…Apke Hain Koun as the ultimate festive fare, this feel-good followup after the historic Hum…Aapke Hain Koun from Barjatya’s school of familial merrymaking has a string of terrific stars from Salman Khan to Saif Ali Khan eating, singing, and dancing through a stream of nursery-rhyme styled songs composed in juvenile style by Ram Laxman-. The entire 4-hour film is a pleasure binge for Alok Nath’s Chaturvedi family as they picnic, party, a wedding, and celebrate from Eid to Diwali to marriage anniversaries. Life is one long celebration in this thinly-plotted excuse to celebrate the joys of family togetherness.

Shabana Azmi Missing Mom On Eid
Image
Shabana Azmi misses her mother the most during Eid. “It has never been the same without Mummy, who till her last days would organise the mehndi the night before a chudiwali (bangle seller) would make us wear bangles whilst those who could chheelo the pistas and badaam were put to work for sheer kurma the next day. Art director Bijon Das Gupta is the best at it.”

Father Kaifi Azmi would insist that the entire family wear new clothes during Eid. “It was the only day in the year that Abba would insist we wear new clothes. Farouque Shaikh and I had a standing competition that my house, Sheer Kurma, was better than his house ka, which neither of us ever conceded. I remember when I was shooting for Pyasi Ankhein, Waheeda Rehman gave me eidi and I was deeply touched. I will miss myself having a ball this Eid.
