For many kids growing up in the early 1990s, "The Sandlot" was one of the definitive sports movies. Set in 1960s Southern California, it revolves around a group of kids who gather to play baseball in an abandoned lot in their suburban neighborhood. But their light-hearted escapades turn chaotic when the newest member of their ranks accidentally offers up a priceless baseball autographed by Babe Ruth, not realizing its significance, which is promptly hit over the fence into a neighboring junkyard. To get it back, they'll have to tangle with the Beast, a (supposedly) bloodthirsty monster of a dog who (allegedly) eats burglars as though they were kibble.
Over the years since its release, "The Sandlot" has swung its way into the heart of pop culture, basking in the warm glow of '90s nostalgia and developing a reputation of one of the greatest baseball movies of all time. While...

Few movies have the nostalgic value that The Sandlothas. The 1993 sports comedy is a feel-good adventure that hasn't lost the capacity to make you laugh and reminisce about your own childhood. Squints getting to kiss Wendy Peffercorn, the lights of the carnival tuned to Ray Charles' "America the Beautiful," and finding a very valuable baseball autographed by legends. The Sandlot is a good family film because it makes everyone in the family feel good. However, according to star Patrick Renna, it appears that things weren't so PG-13-like behind the camera.

There are plenty of films that celebrate one of America's most beloved pastimes, but only the best baseball movies capture the magic of the sport while also providing some great entertainment. Out of all the sports movies, baseball stands above many others as one of the games that Hollywood loves to tell stories of. With the modern version of the sport having origins going back to the 19th century, there are endless facets of baseball for movies to explore and the versatility of the subgenre is highlighted in the best baseball movies.
Some of the biggest stars in Hollywood have found themselves on the field or in the dugout in some stand-out baseball movies, with the likes of Kevin Costner, Tom Hanks, and Brad Pitt. The best baseball movies have told some of the most compelling true stories in the sport's history, while others are pure fiction with a fantasy twist.

In 1993, David Mickey Evans' "The Sandlot" hit theaters as the kinder, gentler "The Bad News Bears" for nostalgic Baby Boomers and baseball-loving Millennials. Combining elements of Michael Ritchie's little league classic and Richard Donner's "The Goonies," the film recalls the magical summer when 11-year-old Scott Smalls (Tom Guiry) learned to play America's pastime in order to hang out with the neighborhood kids. The adventure element centers on the boys' attempts to retrieve the Babe Ruth-autographed baseball Scott unwisely "borrowed" from his step-father for use in a game, but the film is largely an anecdotal tale of early adolescents messing around all day long sans parental supervision.
The innocent freedom of "The Sandlot" is apparently forever (/Film called it one of the 20 best sports films of all time). Millennials are now sharing the film with their children, who...

I had low expectations for Monster Summer. Based on the trailer, it comes across as a Goosebumps and Stranger Things wannabe. The movie has a cast with a few notable names past their primes in such minor roles that you wonder who cashed in a favor or two.
Then there is Mel Gibson, the controversial Hollywood legend, who elevates this adventure horror film into something worth the price of admission. Gibson’s performance single-handedly elevates Monster Summer, which could have been a cheap knockoff, into something substantive.
Not to mention, this is a family “horror” film with a surprising amount of heart.

Plot: When a mysterious force begins to disrupt their big summer fun, Noah and his friends team up with a retired police detective to embark on a monstrous adventure to save their island.
Review: It’s been a longstanding tradition for the horror genre to put kids on a grand adventure to solve a scary problem. Whether it’s The Goonies or The Monster Squad, they’re a fun way to get kids interested in slightly darker fare. Some scary elements to help intrigue and encourage future dalliances into more depraved cinema. Monster Summer does a good job of keeping that spirit alive, but feels so all over the place, that it never settles into a proper goal.
Monster Summer follows Noah (Mason Thames) and his friends as they try to solve the strange happenings in their hometown. Teens are starting to disappear, only to return in an almost catatonic state.

Mel Gibson may just be gleefully screwing with us, but in MovieWeb's interview for his delightful new film Monster Summer, he addressed his recent trip to Malta for location-scouting, which was widely reported to be for his upcoming sequel to The Passion of the Christ. If he is psyching us out, it's a rather detailed and delightful diversion. When asked about his trip to Malta (where he met Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela) and what direction his sequel to the religious drama was taking, Gibson responded by saying:

The 1990s were the Golden Age of kids' sports movies, with some of the most recognizable titles originating from this defining decade. From elevated made-for-television movies to celebrated cult classics, this genre boasts a wide range of sports underdog stories. This collection of films highlights how society utilizes sports as a narrative for positive upbringing. This comes with a series of common sports movie stereotypes, as many of these movies deal with single parents, moving to a new town, or being an outcast. Despite relying on a handful of tropes, each film still maintains its unique message and humor.
The 1990s kids' sports movie is largely defined by the success of 1984s The Karate Kid. We spoke with actor Patrick Renna leading up to the release of his new sports film You Gotta Believe, which is based on a heartbreaking but inspiring true story of a youth baseball team whose journey to the Little League World Series was ultimately chronicled on ESPN back in 2002. Renna has aged gracefully and still has the youthful air that stole the show in throwback kids' flicks like The Big Green and The Sandlot, the latter of which remains a classic and still holds up. And Renna recently told us why.
"I think it's great for this day and age. One of the main plot points is, 'Get out there and get in a little bit of trouble, you know, not too much trouble," Renna told MovieWeb. "So I think it's a good message with all the screens and A.I. and all this stuff taking over the world. I have shown my 7-year-old.

When you pair household names like Luke Wilson and Greg Kinnear, knowing that the end result is an inspiring youth baseball movie shouldn't come as too much of a shock. The all-American faces of these two veteran movie stars scream "beloved pastime." Fine, maybe you won't see Field of Dreams star Kevin Costner grace the screen here but said inclusion wouldn't be a surprise in this kind of project either.
That's not to say Wilson and Kinnear don't hold the screen well in the dueling lead roles in their latest feature film, especially given that You Gotta Believe (grammatical typo included) is based on an incredibly inspiring true baseball story that was ultimately chronicled on ESPN. Directed by Ty Roberts and written by Lane Garrison, there's not much to say here other than that America's (arguably) greatest sport makes for another by-the-numbers but moderately entertaining family flick.

You Gotta Believe stars Luke Wilson and Greg Kinnear as the coaches of an underdog Little League baseball team. This rag-tag group makes it to the Little League World Series in this semi-uplifting sports movie based on a true story. Unfortunately, You Gotta Believe doesn't transcend or subvert the well-worn genre, opting to tell a disorganized narrative that doesn't develop its characters enough to earn its climactic ending. Directed by Ty Roberts and written by Lane Garrison, You Gotta Believe will likely be a blip on the radar for audiences and the actors in the film.

"You're killing me, Smalls" is the most famous line from The Sandlot. Ham, played by Patrick Renna, says this improvised line twice in The Sandlot, and Renna improvised the line for the film. "You're killing me, Smalls" has entered the pop culture lexicon, enduring for decades, showing how the film remains beloved for generations of fans.
The Sandlot is an example of a line from a movie so great when people quote it without even knowing where it came from. "You're killing me, Smalls" is a great example. It's a common phrase for people to say in frustration, and everyone knows what it means. Yet, its origins from the classic coming-of-age movie may not be quite as well known as the phrase itself.
Released in 1993, The Sandlot follows the quiet and sheltered Scotty Smalls as he tries to make friends after moving to a town where baseball is all the rage.

"A little piece of paradise, a half a block wide, and a whole season long." A classic trailer rewatch from the 90s – an iconic baseball movie about kids getting into trouble. The Sandlot was one of my favorite films growing up – I watched it over and over and over so many times. In the summer of 1962, a new kid in town is taken under the wing of a young baseball prodigy and his rowdy team, resulting in many adventures. It's not only the perfect slice of suburban Americana, with all the usual happenings, it's a great baseball movie about a group of kids who – even if they can't really play all that well – build their friendships around the game anyway. The Sandlot stars Tom Guiry, Mike Vitar, Art Lafleur, Patrick Renna (also seen in You Gotta Believe), Chauncey Leopardi, Marty York, Brandon Adams, and many others. In the episode of "The X-Files" called "Bad Blood," Agents Scully (Gillian Anderson) and Mulder (David Duchovny) have to get their story straight after Mulder murders a young man (Patrick Renna) believing him to be a vampire. Know immediately that "Bad Blood" is one of the rare comedy episodes of "The X-Files," and that it is deeply beloved by X-Philes the world over. Indeed, /Film listed it as the best episode of the series, replacing the show's usual funereal tone with one of whimsy. This is an episode wherein Mulder, when knocked in the head, uncontrollably begins singing "Theme from Shaft."
"Bad Blood" is told in a pair of flashbacks, telling slightly different versions of the same event, "Rashomon"-style. Scully recalls investigating a series of mysterious cattle exsanguinations in Texas and is careful to relate Mulder's behavior as cavalier and condescending. She also notes that there was no evidence of vampires.

The Sandlot is a beloved movie from the 90s that has unforgettable quotes and memorable characters. The film captures a different time and place, where kids played baseball in the local lot without cell phones or social media. The movie emphasizes friendship, fun, and the love of baseball, showing that it's not always about competition or winning.
Kids of the 1990s know that The Sandlot is endlessly quotable, and the best Sandlot quotes are recognizable even when someone hasn’t seen the movie in a while. The first movie was so successful and beloved that it spawned a sequel nearly a decade after the original, and even got a time-traveling third adventure for those who love their neighborhood baseball games. There’s even been talk of a series inspired by the original movie, though it hasn’t moved beyond the development stage.

A star of the classic baseball movie The Sandlot reveals why the film had to fire the entire original cast of kids. Set in the 1960s, the movie concerned a group of San Fernando Valley youngsters coming together to form their own sandlot baseball team, and experiencing a series of coming-of-age adventures over the course of a summer. Released in 1993, The Sandlot rode a wave of early-'90s baseball movie nostalgia to become a hit at the box office, grossing $34 million on a budget of $7 million.
Now with cult favorite The Sandlot hitting its 30th anniversary, one of the film’s stars has revealed an amazing fact about the movie's original casting. Appearing recently on The Rich Eisen Show, Ham Porter actor Patrick Renna discussed how the movie’s cast of mostly 12-to-14-year-old actors came together, and explained how at first the film’s cast was filled with kids from the ages of six-to-eight,...

(Welcome to Year of the Vampire, a series examining the greatest, strangest, and sometimes overlooked vampire movies of all time in honor of "Nosferatu," which turns 100 this year.)
Unlike vampires themselves, the best stories arguably don't go on indefinitely. Think about it: would you really want to keep watching the same vampire show (or any show), with no end in sight, for all eternity? At the very least, you'd probably want an intermission of a few years, some time to unplug, think about your life choices, and hibernate in your coffin.
In the Year of the Vampire series, we've been focused almost exclusively on movies. The one TV show we revisited back in March was "True Blood," but even that show lasted seven seasons and 80 episodes. It requires a real time commitment. And if you're new to a show, the prospect of that can be daunting, especially during the Peak TV era,...
