Tiff Review: ‘Kingsway’ Effectively Shows How Sarcasm Can Heal Wounds
Love and suicide. Those are the words director Bruce Sweeney says inspired him to write Kingsway and are very much at the forefront of his dramedy about the dysfunctional Horvat family. And both are treated with humor despite never in a way that belittles their respective import. It’s not about laughing at suicide or those distraught and lost enough to contemplate the act. We smile instead because of our ability to see ourselves in the subject’s heaviness and a tumultuous aftermath that can lead towards a kneejerk self-centered desire to make it personal. That’s what love does. It’s a two-way street wherein we’re just as likely to do everything we can for someone who’s hurting as blame him/her for hurting us as though their troubles aren’t pain enough.

The family member to worry about is Matt (Jeff Gladstone), a semiotics professor riddled with anxiety.

Ali Liebert on Season 2 of "Bomb Girls" and the origin of Betty's swagger
Tags: Ali LiebertBomb GirlsReelzIMDbDown RiverColleen Rennison

I had the pleasure of talking to Bomb Girls’s Ali Liebert last week, and in addition to being perfectly charming, she filled me in on the origin of “the swagger” and her new “sexy” lesbian project. There’s never been a better time to get caught up on the show.

AfterEllen: Hi Ali! Thanks for taking the time to talk to me. I just saw the teaser for Season 2 which looks amazing — I think every lesbian on the internet freaked out about as soon as it came out —and it seems like the show is taking on a lot of meaty issues this season. Lorna might be getting an abortion, Betty is facing harassment accusations. Does it seems like there’s a change in tone at all from Season 1?

Ali Liebert: Well, we have 12 episodes so each character — each one of the...

Twins: Michelle's Blonde Brood
We're celebrating twins daily at 2:22 pm while we're in Gemini

Gratuitous Anecdote! I've always loved to draw and in my high school years it's what people knew me for. I won the High School's Departmental Award in Art (Do they still have departmental awards? Hell, do they still have art classes?) in that heady stretch of graduation celebrations where they keep honoring star pupils. One day early in my senior year or maybe it was at the end of my junior year, the art teacher asked one of the students to pose for the class. A guy I didn't know volunteered and I felt totally inspired. Instant crushing helps. He loved my drawing and we became fast friends after the class. The first day I went to his house after school I was stunned to see a whole house full of doppelgangers. He had one of those families...
