Image
Hulu's new period fantasy Washington Blackis already leaving its mark on the streaming charts after just one day.

Per FlixPatrol, Washington Black has already begun making its way up the streaming charts within just a single day of its premiere on Hulu. ‘Washington Black’ Review: Sterling K. Brown’s Hulu Adaptation Is a Bumpy but Affable Adventure
Image
In its substantial heart, “Washington Black” is a simple coming-of-age story about a boy learning to navigate an adulthood filled with drawbacks. Although the Hulu adaptation of Esi Edugyan’s award-winning novel can fly off-course — suffering most from modern television’s penchant for juggling multiple timelines at once, chronology and coherence be damned — the first four episodes (of eight total) nurture their core premise well enough to instill warm, honest reassurances in its young audience, while offering an affable adventure made all the more pleasant thanks to a game cast and curious spirit.

The bluntly named George Washington Black, played as an 11-year-old by Eddie Karanja, is a scientific prodigy. He can look at a machine and intuitively understand how it works — and how to fix it. When “Wash” repairs a 19th-century battery, pilot director Wanuri Kahiu visualizes Wash’s imagination, briefly showing the inner workings to the audience just...

‘Washington Black’ Review: Hulu Drama Blends Magic and Historical Cruelty to Bumpy Results
Image
“Washington Black,” Hulu’s new limited series, is an action-adventure story about a bright 11-year-old boy with a talent for science that is both a daring hero’s journey and a sober reminder of a time when people were treated as property. These two themes run concurrently. It is a production that presents a challenge to the cast and crew to show the viewpoints and emotions of both sides well. And they do, for the most part.

Of the four episodes available to critics, the show doesn’t stray from the prize-winning book of the same name by Canadian writer and series co-producer Esi Edugyan. Edugyhan based parts of the book on the true story of 19th-century former slave Andrew Bogle. The fictional George Washington Black aka “Wash,” is born on a Barbados sugar plantation sometime in the 19th century. Under any other circumstance his curious mind might have led him to attend college,...

Rowan Atkinson at an event for Johnny English Reborn (2011)
Man Vs Baby | Rowan Atkinson returning to Netflix for slapstick Man Vs Bee sequel
Rowan Atkinson at an event for Johnny English Reborn (2011)
Rowan Atkinson is returning to Netflix to follow up Man Vs Bee with slapstick sequel series Man Vs Baby.

Rowan Atkinson’s prowess at physical comedy and slapstick shenanigans combined with his malleable rubber face have made him famous worldwide as Mr Bean. One of Atkinson’s biggest influences is French comedian and filmmaker Jacques Tati, and he based much of the humour in 2007’s Mr Bean’s Holiday on Tati’s masterpiece Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday.

It made sense that Atkinson would try to reach the widest possible audience by creating a near silent series for Netflix. Man vs Bee, which Atkinson created with Will Davies and also starred Jing Lusi, Claudie Blakley, Tom Basden, Julian Rhind-Tutt and Greg McHugh, saw him play Trevor Bingley. Trevor’s a down on his luck man who finds himself battling a bee whilst looking after a luxurious house, leading to calamity and chaos. John Hughes...

Every Single Inside No. 9 Episode Was an Easter Egg in the Series Finale
Image
Warning: contains spoilers for Inside No. 9 “Plodding On”.

Look carefully at the end credits for Inside No. 9 finale “Plodding On” and in among the names of the many, many previous guest stars who came back to send the anthology show on its way is one puzzling entry. Between Denis Lawson from “A Quiet Night In” and Rula Lenska from “The Devil of Christmas” is the name: Europa Lepus. You won’t find them on IMDb because Europa Lepus is not an actor but a form of Latin for the European Hare. That’s right, not content with hiding a statue of a hare inside every one of its 55 episodes, Inside No. 9 also hid a hare in its finale end credits.

That level of commitment to Easter eggs went even further for the finale. Visit the cryptic crossword published by The Guardian newspaper on the day the finale...

Green Wing (2004)
Green Wing | Creator and cast revive sitcom as a podcast
Green Wing (2004)
Cult classic sitcom Green Wing has been resurrected as a podcast with the original cast and creative team.

Back in 2004, fresh from the success of sketch show Smack The Pony, writer Victoria Pile created Green Wing, a sitcom set in a hospital.

With an ensemble cast that included Tamsin Greig and Stephen Mangan – who would later reunite to star opposite Matt LeBlanc in Episodes – the comedy is helped enormously by committed clowning the cast, particularly Mark Heap and Michelle Gomez. The show ran for two series from 2004 to 2006 and, in a move more in common with American sitcoms, had a large pool of writers.

After the show ended, the same creative team made the terrific University comedy Campus in 2009, which despite only running for one series is well worth tracking down, especially for the tour de force performance from Andy Nyman as megalomaniacal monster and Vice Chancellor Jonty De Wolfe.

Rowan Atkinson at an event for Johnny English Reborn (2011)
Rowan Atkinson Returns for a Battle in Comedy 'Man vs Bee' Trailer
Rowan Atkinson at an event for Johnny English Reborn (2011)
"You see... there was this bee." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a fun comedy series titled Man vs Bee, the return of kooky British comedian Rowan Atkinson making us laugh even more. "A comedy series that will get the whole family buzzing." Atkinson last made the Johnny English Strikes Again movie in 2018, and has been doing a few other Mr Bean comedies recently, including the "Handy Bean" series. In this one, he doesn't play Mr. Bean specifically, but it still looks fun as he gets into more trouble. A man finds himself at war with a bee while housesitting a luxurious mansion. Who will win, and what irreparable damage will be done in the process? In addition to Atkinson, the cast includes Jing Lusi, Julian Rhind-Tutt, Greg McHugh, India Fowler, Claudie Blakley, & Tom Basden. This actually looks much better than Johnny English or Mr Bean, and everyone can...

Blithe Spirit Review: Dan Stevens Leads Exhausting Noël Coward Adaptation
Charles Condomine (Dan Stevens) is plagued by writer’s block—so much so that his wife Ruth (Isla Fisher) talked her film producer father (Simon Kunz’s Henry Mackintosh) into paying him to adapt his best-selling detective novel debut into a screenplay. The hope is that an easy task without the need for new ideas will get the creative (and sexual) juices flowing again so that they can push their beds together and maybe even cross the Atlantic to Hollywood. No matter how supportive Ruth has been, however, Charles still can’t muster more than an all-caps “Help” upon the page before losing himself to another temper tantrum. If only his muse was by his side: the first Mrs. Condomine (Leslie Mann’s Elvira), who tragically died seven years prior.

C’est la vie, right? They’ll just have to push through instead: Charles banging his head against his typewriter...

‘The Facility’ DVD Review
Image
Stars: Julian Rhind-Tutt, Sally Phillips, Adrian Edmondson, Carol Cleveland, Stephen Marcus, Sarine Sofair, Omri Rose, Harriet Madly, Laura Swift, Kevin Leslie, Laurence Kennedy, Connor Williams, Sophie MIller-Sheen, Michael Fatogun | Written and Directed by Matt Mitchell

Despite the nondescript title, The Facility is actually a sequel to 2017’s British zombie horror The Rizen, and originally debuted in 2019 on the festival circuit as The Rizen: Possession… a title which clearly marks out where the film is headed and what we should expect. So why the title change? Maybe because the sequel has been released by a different distributor who, selfishly, didn’t want to give the first films release any publicity as they didn’t release it or – and I want to say this is the more logical reason – The Rizen wasn’t actually that well received on its release and the distributor wanted to distance this film from the original. Plus,...

Judi Dench, Leslie Mann, Isla Fisher, and Dan Stevens in Blithe Spirit (2020)
Dan Stevens & Isla Fisher in New US Trailer for 'Blithe Spirit' Comedy
Judi Dench, Leslie Mann, Isla Fisher, and Dan Stevens in Blithe Spirit (2020)
"The moon is full and we must harness its power." IFC Films has released a new US trailer for the kooky relationship comedy Blithe Spirit, a big screen adaptation of the classic stage play of the same name. This opens first in the UK this month, then in the US in February. An over-the-top spiritualist medium holds a seance for a writer suffering from writers block but accidentally summons the spirit of his deceased first wife which leads to an increasingly complex love triangle with his current wife of five years. Described as a "riotous reimagining of Noël Coward's classic comedy, about love that just won't die." The delightfully wacky cast includes Dan Stevens, with Judi Dench as Madame Arcati, Isla Fisher, Leslie Mann, Emilia Fox, Callie Cooke, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, Julian Rhind-Tutt, James Fleet, and Simon Kunz. This seems like a whole boat load of ridiculously goofy ghost fun.

Amanda Burton, Emilia Fox, Sam Barnard, David Caves, and Genesis Lynea in Silent Witness (1996)

Harlots to Air on BBC Two in the UK Later This Year
Image
In an odd yet welcome turn of events, BBC Two has bought the rights to Harlots, Moira Buffini and Alison Newman’s excellent period drama set in the world of the 18th century London sex trade. But, you ask, didn’t Harlots come out years ago? On ITV? And wasn’t it just cancelled?

Yes, yes and yes to that. Harlots originally aired in the UK on now-defunct digital channel ITV Encore. It was a Us-uk co-production between ITV Studios and streaming service Hulu in the Us. When ITV Encore closed, StarzPlay UK bought the show’s streaming rights and aired seasons two and three via its Amazon Prime channel.

Last month, Hulu cancelled Harlots after three eight-episode seasons, and this month, BBC Two has bought them all. It plans to air seasons one and two back to back later this year, with season three following in 2021. Finally then, after...

‘The Rizen’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Laura Swift, Patrick Knowles, Christopher Tajah, Laurence Kennedy, Julian Rhind-Tutt, Adrian Edmondson, Sally Phillips, Tom Goodman-Hill, Bruce Payne, Stephen Marcus, Bruce Herbelin-Earle | Written and Directed by Matt Mitchell

[Note: With High Fliers Films re-releasing The Rizen on VOD this week, here’s a reposting of our review from the films original DVD release back in early 2018]

The Rizen is a UK indie-horror film set in a black hallway during the early days of the Cold War in 1955. You can tell this a period piece by the handcrafted, vintage style black walls and black floors. If this movies set design got any darker it would write poetry and start cutting itself.

I had a hard time getting into this film before I even hit the play button. The title is The Rizen. No, not “the risen” as in “the dead has risen” if you’re referencing zombies, or “He has risen” if you’re referencing theological zombies.

Studiocanal has launched the first trailer for the reimagining of Noël Coward’s classic comedy ‘Blithe Spirit’ featuring Dan Stevens.

The film follows best-selling crime novelist Charles (Dan Stevens) who is struggling with catastrophic writer’s block and a stressful deadline for his first screenplay. His picture-perfect second wife Ruth (Isla Fisher) is doing her best to keep him focussed in the hope of fulfilling her dream of heading to Hollywood. Charles’ desperate search for inspiration leads him to invite Madame Arcati (Judi Dench), a medium recently exposed as a fraud, to perform a séance in their home. They all get more than they bargained for when Arcati accidentally summons the spirit of his deceased first wife: the fiery and jealous Elvira (Leslie Mann) who embarks on a mission to kill Charles so she can spend eternity with him which leads to an increasingly comical and deadly love triangle.

Noël Coward in The Italian Job (2003)
Isla Fisher & Dan Stevens in Official Trailer for Comedy 'Blithe Spirit'
Noël Coward in The Italian Job (2003)
"Can he, by any chance... touch her?" Studiocanal UK has debuted the first official UK trailer for a wacky relationship comedy titled Blithe Spirit, a big screen adaptation of the classic stage play of the same name. An over-the-top spiritualist medium holds a seance for a writer suffering from writers block but accidentally summons the spirit of his deceased first wife which leads to an increasingly complex love triangle with his current wife of five years. Described as a "riotous reimagining of Noël Coward's classic comedy, about love that just won't die." Literally! Ha. The delightfully wacky cast includes Dan Stevens, with Judi Dench as Madame Arcati, Isla Fisher, Leslie Mann, Emilia Fox, Callie Cooke, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, Julian Rhind-Tutt, James Fleet, and Simon Kunz. This certainly looks as kooky and absurd as promised, no doubt about that. A proper British comedy of plentiful ridiculousness for anyone who needs a hearty laugh.
