The wait horror fans had been enduring for a proper glimpse at the latest entry in the Evil Dead franchise, Evil Dead Rise, had been torturous, but a first-look image was finally unleashed this week. We also have an official synopsis, and it sounds like a good time. Essentially, the Necronomicon unleashes the Deadites for some mayhem in an apartment complex.

Now, without even so much as a teaser for the film by the writing of this article, we don’t know what the “Evil Dead in an apartment building” idea will look like. Going by the synopsis alone, I can’t help but feel that the upcoming Lee Cronin film may have taken some inspiration from an Italian cult classic – Lamberto Bava’s Demons 2 – in which demons invade a high rise apartment building and quickly start turning everyone they come across into one of their horde. Happy Monday, dear readers! We have a brand new slate of home media releases to look forward to as we head into a new month, and there are some great films coming out on Tuesday that genre fans will definitely want to pick up. Rlje Films is finally releasing Horror Noire on both Blu-ray and DVD this week, and they’re also bringing home arguably the most talked-about horror film of 2020 as well: Rob Savage’s Host. Kino Lorber is showing some love to Dark Intruder with their new 2K Blu, and Code Red is giving us more reasons to fear the water with their Blu-ray for The Great Alligator.

Other releases for February 2nd include Satan’s Blood, Sky Sharks, Deadcon, and Hellkat.

Movies are so rarely great art that if we cannot appreciate great trash we have very little reason to be interested in them. – Pauline Kael.

The above quote from the late, legendary American film critic Kael was most certainly not referring to Lamberto Bava’s Demons (1985), but a lot of films in our beloved genre bow to this description. Demons is great trash – it wants nothing more to assault your senses with a barrage of images and sound for 88 minutes before you even know what hit you, and does so while breathing that rarified Italian air.

But I’m sure she was referring to a film like Demons – one made with a ton of style, by a filmmaker impassioned with his chosen topic, as ridiculous as that plays on the screen. And make no mistake, Demons is ridiculous; as a matter of fact, it starts there before rapidly ascending to the sublime.

For the second week of November, genre fans have plenty of titles to choose from, as the horror and sci-fi related home releases aren’t slowing down at all this week. “Demons” is one of the definitive horror movies for any fan of Italian horror films. It was one of the first Italian films I ever watched several years ago and instantly became one of my favorites. It’s not perfect by any means but I don’t think that was the intention. The movie makes up for any flaws with its superb practical effects that constantly keeps the story moving in its speedy pace.

The movie takes place primarily inside a movie theater in Berlin.

This week’s edition looks be our biggest yet, with trailers for Molly Crow and VIViD, news on the Shriekfest Film Festival, a new clip from Bad Kids Go to Hell, multiple short films, and much more:

First Details on Alice D: “In the early 1900′s the Davenport House was a famous and successful brothel, until a young prostitute named Alice killed herself there. After her death, the brothel became haunted by Alice’s ghost, and was eventually abandoned. One hundred years later, the old structure is renovated into a beautiful mansion. It is still rumored to inhabit the ghost of Alice. Despite this, the new owner; the rich and arrogant heir to the Davenport fortune, decides to throw a wild party for his first night in the house.

At the conclusion of Lamberto Bava's Demons a universe of possibilities had been opened, suggesting a myriad of directions for sequels. Despite their penchant for cashing in, the Italians seemed to favor ripping off Hollywood successes, rather than carving out their own franchises.

Spaghetti takes on The Exorcist, Jaws and, of course, Dawn of the Dead were produced as a means of "cutting in" on those global successes. But the Dario Argento-produced / Lamberto Bava-directed Demons had created such a stylish and energetic universe that those creators were quick to recognize the potential for more, quickly putting Demons 2 into production and throwing a bit more money behind its architecture. The creation of Demons 2 represented a rare - and surprising - instance where Italian horror attempted to capitalize on its own success with a direct sequel. And despite a somewhat mixed result, it begs the question: "why...

Arrow Video, purveyors of all things cult movie, have finally – after months of teasing and trailing – released the classic Italian horror pairing of Demons and Demons 2 on Blu-ray in both the standard slipcase versions and a swanky steelbook double-bill. This year's Mecca of Horror was at the Marriot at the Los Angeles Airport. All the little gore hounds flocked to multiple rooms of entertainment and spectacle like the Theater Room that featured many legendary Horror actors, actresses and filmmakers in discussion panels and Q&A's like the great John Carpenter, Tom Savini and Asia Argento as well as reunions of the cast and crew of such classic films as Demons and Nightmare on Elm Street.
