Glen Powell Brings Grit and Humanity to 'The Running Man,' Says Director Edgar Wright Alongside New Image [Exclusive]
Image
This fall sees the long-awaited release of The Running Man, Edgar Wright’s high-octane adaptation of the Stephen King novel. The action-thriller stars Glen Powell in the role of Ben Richards, a desperate everyman forced to enter a deadly game show in a not-so-distant dystopian America — and judging by our intense exclusive image, things are not going well for him. As part of Collider's Exclusive Preview event, we're delighted to reveal a new look at Powell in the film. We can also share a delightful chat we had with Wright, one of the world's most exciting directors of kinetic and stylized action.

Wright, known for genre-defining cult favorites like Shaun of the Dead and Baby Driver, is promising something darker and more faithful to King’s original story — and a whole lot rougher than the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger version. The director says that when describing the movie to new audiences,...

The Running Man Trailer Featured a Blink-and-You-Missed-It Arnold Schwarzenegger Cameo
Image
Glen Powell will take the lead in the upcoming The Running Man remake, which will have Edgar Wright at the helm. However, the dystopian action, which is based on Stephen King's 1982 novel, was previously adapted in 1987, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Since it was in production, Schwarzenegger was aware of what was going on. Glen Powell even highlighted that the Terminator actor gave his "blessing" for the remake. The upcoming adaptation won't only have Schwarzenegger's blessing because the upcoming The Running Man also pays tribute to Paul Michael Glaser's 1987 original actor and features a blink-and-you-missed-it cameo of Schwarzenegger in teh trailer.

The dystopian action film follows a game show named The Running Man. The contestants are usually in need of money, which they can only win if they can escape the murderous Hunters that are chasing them around the world to stop them from winning over a period of 30 days.

The Running Man: Edgar Wright’s Remake Should Not Adapt Stephen King’s Brutally Dark Ending for a Reason
Image
Glen Powell is sprinting headfirst into The Running Man, the upcoming Edgar Wright directorial, which is a high-octane adaptation of Stephen King’s eponymous novel. Even after the trailer drop, we are hoping that the movie won’t be completely true to its source material, especially when it comes to the ending.

More often than not, viewers want to see an honest page-to-page adaptation, so why shouldn’t The Running Man follow through with this idea? To understand this concern, you’ll first have to know about the book’s haunting and grim ending. So, here’s a breakdown of the same, followed by an overview of the trailer, and our take on why the climax should be altered.

How Stephen King’s The Running Man ends in death and terror.. A still from The Running Man | Credits: Genre Films

After The Running Man Remake Trailer Drops, Arnold Schwarzenegger's 1987 Cult Classic Starts Streaming For Free
Image
Nearly 40 years after director Paul Michael Glaser's The Running Manhit theaters, the movie is getting a remake. As a result, the original 1987 film, which was based on a story by Stephen King, is now available to stream for free on Tubi.

Per ComicBook, 1987's The Running Man was written by Steven E. de Souza and is set in a dystopian America. 'The Running Man's Edgar Wright Sought the Approval of Stephen King & Arnold Schwarzenegger for the Remake
Image
Now that the trailer has been released, fans ofThe Running Man have finally gotten their first look at the upcoming action thriller starring Glen Powell. The modern adaptation of Stephen King's 1982 novel of the same name will make a few changes to the original story, and from what we've seen it's less bleak and more action-oriented. The obvious question on everyone's mind is whether the author himself gave his approval. And as it turns out, the King did have some say.

As reported by Entertainment Weekly, during a set visit, Wright and Bacall talked about the most important approvals when remaking The Running Man. The Stephen King story had been a dream project for Wright since he was a boy: "I probably started reading Stephen King books when I was 12. He was sort of my author. I actually read "The Running Man" before I saw the 1987 film." Nevertheless, actually...

We have finally been gifted with the first footage from Hot Fuzz and Baby Driver director Edgar Wright’s remake of the Stephen King classic, The Running Man. After fans quickly noticed the glorious sight of action movie icon and Hollywood legend Arnold Schwarzenegger adoring some The Running Man universe’s money (and looking very presidential while doing so), fans have since taken to social media to celebrate the cameo, with some taking it as a great sign of what’s to come in the remake.

The Running Man | Trailer lands for Edgar Wright’s movie
Image
The Running Man is back in cinemas this winter, only this time, Edgar Wright has made it. Here’s the trailer.

This November sees the release of The Running Man courtesy of Paramount Pictures, marking Edgar Wright’s follow-up to 2021’s Last Night In Soho and adding yet another spin on a Stephen King novel to the glut of adaptations that we’ve been getting lately.

Stephen King’s novel is a pretty dark affair. He even wrote it under the pseudonym of Richard Bachman, a pen name that allowed him to exercise a more cynical and nasty streak to his work. While that may yet prove to be the case with the final film, the first trailer is presented in a hyper-kinetic style with several signature Edgar Wright flourishes. In short, it looks like it’s going to be a good time at the movies.

The Running Man: Glen Powell’s Marketing Move Proves Ashton Hall Is Still Winning in Life After IShowSpeed Loss
Image
Ashton Hall is back with one of his insane morning routines, and this time he has brought Glen Powell along for the ride.

Yeah, you read that right. The actor who seems to be on every casting director’s radar these days decided to go all out for his upcoming film’s marketing, as he collaborated with Ashton Hall to promote the trailer’s release.

In the video, Hall begins his routine by dunking his face in ice water at 8:42 Am. By 8:54, he is seen working on creating the “Glen Powell ‘Running Man’ Training Routine.” Apparently, the routine focuses on running endurance, explosive power, and, of course, sprint performance.

Two minutes past 9 Am, Hall finally met Powell, and the two began working out, dressed in Hall’s iconic black vests. From push-ups to sprints, they do it all. Towards the end, Hall is seen entering the movie theater,...

Edgar Wright at an event for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)
First Trailer For Running Man Races Out
Edgar Wright at an event for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)
I said last fall I was dreading the release of Edgar Wright’s remake of The Running Man because I liked the Arnold Schwarzenegger original so much, and based on past remakes of Arnie films (like Total Recall) it probably wouldn’t be nearly as fun. With the release of the first trailer I guess I have to take that back. While Wright’s Running Man has a more grim backstory (in line with the Stephen King book), it has Not lost the goofy sensibility, thank heavens. In a dystopian future the country is a wasteland ruled by a dictator. Ben Richards, our main character, is unemployed and looking for a way to get his sick daughter treatment…but the only way is to volunteer for The Running Man, America’s favorite gladiator game show. In the Arnie movie, this show took place in an arena. In this version, the Entire World is an arena!

‘The Running Man’ Trailer Arrives, Starring Glen Powell
Image
Stephen King’s 1982 The Running Man has been adapted once again, this time with Edgar Wright directing and Glen Powell (Twisters) in the starring role. The official trailer confirms the latest adaptation’s tone and has Powell fighting for his life against overwhelming odds.

The first film adaptation opened in theaters in November 1987, had Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead, and was directed by Starsky & Hutch star Paul Michael Glaser. William H. Macy, Lee Pace, Emilia Jones, and Michael Cera join Powell in the 2025 adaptation, along with Daniel Ezra, Jayme Lawson, Colman Domingo, and Josh Brolin.

“In a near-future society, The Running Man is the top-rated show on television—a deadly competition where contestants, known as Runners, must survive 30 days while being hunted by professional assassins, with every move broadcast to a bloodthirsty public, and each day bringing a greater cash reward,” reads Paramount Pictures’ synopsis. “Desperate to save his sick daughter,...

Edgar Wright at an event for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)
The Running Man trailer may reveal what Edgar Wright needed Arnold Schwarzenegger’s approval for
Edgar Wright at an event for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)
The first trailer for Edgar Wright’s The Running Man was released earlier today, and the film looks like it will be a lot of fun. The Running Man is based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name, which was previously adapted into the 1987 movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. While this new film will more closely resemble the original novel, the team still reached out to Schwarzenegger before they started shooting.

“We wanted to give a nod to the great man in the film — I’m not going to say what that was — and we sort of needed his approval for it,” Wright told Entertainment Weekly. “Glen has been in film with Arnold; he was in Expendables 3, and he knew [his son] Patrick. I said, ‘We have to talk to Arnold.’ It was an incredible call. Obviously, sometimes, when people do newer adaptations of films, it’s a bit of a touchy situation.

The Running Man: Edgar Wright Breaks Down Reboot's Leads And Reflects On Receiving Schwarzenegger's Blessing
Image
The first trailer for The Running Man raced online earlier today, and Entertainment Weekly (via SFFGazette.com) has since caught up with filmmaker Edgar Wright and the movie's cast to learn more about what to expect from this latest adaptation of the Stephen King novel.

The site explains that the movie begins when Powell's unemployed construction worker, Ben Richards, is forced to enter a game show where contestants are tasked with surviving for as long as they can in an America where anyone is allowed to kill them. The game ends after 30 days, and the longer they survive, the more money they'll make.

The catch is, no one has made it that far because they're quickly taken down by a group of trackers and assassins called the Hunters.

Richards sets out to get the money he and his wife Sheila (Jayme Lawson) need for their sick daughter's medicine, making the stakes higher than ever.

'The Running Man' Trailer Features Surprising Arnold Schwarzenegger Cameo
Image
The first trailer for Edgar Wright’s remake of The Running Man dropped today, giving audiences their first look at Glen Powell in the role of Ben Richards. While many will simply watch the trailer and move on, there are some who will dissect the video frame by frame, looking for anything of interest that may have been missed by the less eagle-eyed among us. One such moment is the appearance of a very familiar face for anyone who remembers Paul Michael Glaser’s 1987 cult classic based on the same Stephen King story.

While there is no doubt many nods to the previous incarnation of the story of a man pitted against a group of merciless killers as part of an entertainment show, one literal blink-and-you-miss-it moment that features a dark-haired woman brandishing a handful of $100 bills which feature one Arnold Schwarzenegger looking very presidential. Whether Arnie makes an actual...

‘The Running Man’ Trailer: Glen Powell’s Remake May Skip Stephen King’s Dark Original Story
Image
The trailer for Edgar Wright’s The Running Man, starring Glen Powell, has created a lot of buzz for all the right reasons. Wright, who has been vocal about his fascination with Stephen King’s novel, previously expressed that his adaptation will be more in line with the book than the adaptation that came before, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

While there’s no doubt Wright’s version of Ben Richards’ story will be more faithful to the themes of King’s novel, like the Schwarzenegger movie, it appears the movie will skip past the dark ending.

Glen Powell’s The Running Man adaptation might be skipping Stephen King’s dark story

The original novel by Stephen King follows the protagonist, Ben Richards, who participates in a bloodthirsty game show called The Running Man in an attempt to win the money needed to help his sick daughter. From the trailer, it’s...

The Running Man Remake Trailer Features An Arnold Schwarzenegger Cameo You Definitely Missed
Image
It's no secret that Stephen King wasn't a fan of the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger adaptation of his novel "The Running Man." The book is one of his angriest stories and takes place in a dystopian world where an ordinary schlub signs up to compete in the world's deadliest game to earn enough cash to save his sick daughter.

That's why King felt it was a mistake to cast Schwarzenegger, one of the least ordinary people of all time, losing the everyman appeal the character was supposed to inspire in the audience.

Now, nearly 30 years later, Edgar Wright is remaking "The Running Man" with Glen Powell -- who, while still more jacked than anyone I know, is at least able to look the part of an ordinary down-on-his-luck father. This film looks like it will be the first major test for Powell as an action star, and judging by the film's trailer,...

Edgar Wright's The Running Man Could Succeed Where Squid Game Season 3 Failed
Image
Nature abhors a vacuum, and one sharp-eyed project about a deadly game show rises when another belly-flops. Let's face it: "Squid Game" season 3 is great if you like creepy games, but it's pretty awful if you were expecting the kind of social commentary the show used to be known for. By the time "Squid Game" season 1 ended, the show had established its place not only as Netflix's #1 show but also as a complex and multi-faceted study about the nature of wealth and systems that treat human beings as a commodity. "Squid Game" season 2 changed the games by introducing the voting system, which explored similar avenues -- but little by little, the social commentary fell by the wayside and the show focused on sheer brutality. The final season offers neither true closure nor real lessons, utterly dropping the social commentary ball "Squid Game" once carried so proudly.

Fortunately, it seems...

‘The Running Man’: Everything to know about Edgar Wright’s new take on Stephen King’s dystopian classic as trailer drops
Image
Even when he's not in a Navy cockpit, Glen Powell has a need for speed. The first trailer for The Running Man raced onto the internet today, featuring the Top Gun: Maverick star taking on a role previously played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in a deliciously '80s adaptation of Stephen King's dystopian novel.

Hailing from director Edgar Wright, this new Running Man is running a very different race. Hewing more closely to the novel — which King published under his since-abandoned nom de plume of Richard Bachman — the updated film has an edgy sense of humor and fleet-footed action sequences that unfold in multiple locations across the U.S.

Appearing at CinemaCon earlier this year, Wright described his take as a "very intense, dangerous road movie." And he praised his leading man for never taking a breather during the movie's rapid-fire production. "He literally and figuratively threw himself into it,...

Glen Powell Is on the Run in First Trailer for Stephen King’s ‘The Running Man’
Image
When Stephen King wrote The Running Man back in 1982 under his nom-de-plume Richard Bachman, the year 2025 felt so impossibly distant that it was possible to imagine a dystopia where expert assassins hunted innocent men for sport on the most popular television show in America. And while reality TV hasn’t sunk to that low quite yet, Hollywood couldn’t resist bringing King’s unique fusion of The Fugitive, The Truman Show, and The Hunger Games back to the big screen this year.

The newest adaptation of The Running Man, starring Glen Powell,...

Edgar Wright's Running Man Remake Trailer Makes One Big Change From The Stephen King Book
Image
This post contains potential spoilers for "The Running Man."

The new trailer for Edgar Wright's film adaptation of Stephen King's "The Running Man" has sprinted online, and like the 1987 version starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, it seems to be heading in a much funnier and lighter direction than the book it's adapting.

Set in the not-too-distant future, Glen Powell plays Ben Richards, a down-on-his-luck soul who signs up to be a contestant on a popular and bloodthirsty gameshow called The Running Man. The contest requires our hero to outrun a band of hunters that are tasked with tracking and killing Richards, all for the good of live entertainment. Should he outrun his pursuers, Richards could walk away with a truckload of cash to help his severely sick daughter.

In the 1987 movie, which stands among the better half of Stephen King adaptations (though certainly not one of Schwarzenegger's best movies), the family element was absent.

The Running Man – Official Trailer Drops: Edgar Wright’s Bold Take on Stephen King’s Classic Stars Glen Powell
Image
The full trailer for The Running Man is finally here, and it’s already making waves. Directed by Edgar Wright, this new version of the story looks intense, gritty, and full of action. It’s not a remake of the old 1987 movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Instead, it’s based more closely on the original 1982 novel by Stephen King, written under his pen name, Richard Bachman.

Glen Powell plays Ben Richards, the main character who ends up on a brutal game show where survival is the only way to win. Contestants get hunted down on live TV while the world watches. If they make it out alive, they get a big cash prize. But most don’t. The whole thing takes place in a broken-down future where the show is the biggest thing on television, and people are glued to it.

The Running Man – Full Trailer Released: Edgar Wright & Glen Powell Bring Stephen King’s Vision to Life
Image
A brand-new version of The Running Man is on the way, and it looks like it’s going to be a wild ride. The first full trailer has just been released, and fans are finally getting a closer look at what director Edgar Wright has been working on.

This isn’t a remake of the 1987 film with Arnold Schwarzenegger; it’s a fresh take that sticks more closely to the original book by Stephen King, who wrote it under the name Richard Bachman.

The movie stars Glen Powell as Ben Richards, a man thrown into a deadly game show where he has to run for his life while being hunted. The prize? A big pile of cash, but only if he survives. ‘The Running Man’ Trailer Teases Glen Powell’s Deadliest Game
Image
Paramount Pictures has unveiled the first official trailer, teaser poster and film stills for Edgar Wright’s long-gestating update of The Running Man, setting social media alight ahead of its 7 November 2025 release in Dolby Cinema, 4Dx, ScreenX, Premium Large Formats and IMAX.

The original 1987 blockbuster, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as desperate everyman Ben Richards, transformed Stephen King’s dystopian novella into an all-out satirical bloodsport, and Wright’s version promises to honour that spirit while injecting his trademark kinetic humour and visual flair.

This time, Hollywood’s rising star Glen Powell steps into the role of Richards, a factory worker driven to enter a lethal televised game show when his young daughter’s medical bills spiral out of control. Josh Brolin reprises the role of the charmingly ruthless producer Dan Killian, the architect of a nationwide spectacle in which “Runners” must evade professional assassins for thirty days in order to claim a life-changing cash prize.

Edgar Wright On The Running Man Trailer: Explosions, Glen Powell In A Towel And Michael Cera Reunion
Image
Edgar Wright is on the run. Not from the authorities, thankfully, but to the editing suite. “I’m going back to work after this call,” he says, as he sits down for a Zoom with Empire long after most people will have clocked off for the day. He’s got a film to complete, after all. And that film is The Running Man, in which Glen Powell stars as a man who becomes a contestant on the deadliest game show in the world. Imagine if The Chase involved actual chasing, and you’re halfway there.

If the title seems familiar, that’s because you may have seen the 1987 movie of the same name, starring one Arnold Schwarzenegger. That was loosely based on the Richard Bachman (aka Stephen King) book of the same name. Wright’s version promises to be much more faithful, and the trailer — out today — promises a typically wild Wrightian ride.

First Trailer Launches Edgar Wright’s High-Stakes “Running Man”
Edgar Wright at an event for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)
Paramount Pictures debuted the first trailer for Edgar Wright’s take on “The Running Man” on Tuesday, revealing Glen Powell’s Ben Richards evading armed “Hunters” ahead of the film’s 7 November 2025 release. Wright, who co-wrote the screenplay with Michael Bacall, says his aim is to adapt Stephen King’s 1982 novel—published under the Richard Bachman pseudonym—rather than replicate the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger film that departed sharply from the text.

In an interview with Empire, the director called the project “a very intense, dangerous road movie,” underlining the 30-day nationwide manhunt that anchors the plot. Powell echoed that assessment during an Entertainment Weekly set visit, saying the new version “leans hard into the desperation that made the book frighteningly prescient.”

Principal photography wrapped in May after sixteen weeks in the United Kingdom; Glasgow doubled for a corporatized Boston, while an abandoned Welsh mine became the Games Network arena that televises the lethal contest.

Glen Powell, 36, Fights for His Life in 'The Running Man' Trailer
Image
The countdown is on. The first trailer for Edgar Wright’s The Running Man has arrived — and with it, Glen Powell is officially stepping into the arena. The action-packed reimagining of Stephen King’s dystopian classic hits theaters on November 7, and the new footage promises a brutal, breathless ride with Powell leading the charge as Ben Richards, a desperate man forced to survive a state-sanctioned death game for a shot at saving his daughter.

Powell, 36, isn’t the only one impressed by what Wright’s cooked up. At this year’s CinemaCon, none other than Tom Cruise watched the teaser alongside Powell — and according to Powell, the Mission: Impossible icon was blown away.

“Watching that teaser with Tom Cruise is a memory I will never forget. He was so stoked after watching it. What’s been amazing about my relationship with Tom is the fact he’s a guy that doesn’t hide his excitement.
