Dylan Minnette and Katherine Langford in 13 Reasons Why (2017)
San Sebastian: Exploring Teen Angst in Brazil’s ‘Butterfly Diaries’
Dylan Minnette and Katherine Langford in 13 Reasons Why (2017)
Participating in San Sebastian’s Europe-Latin America Co-production Forum, Paula Kim’s debut feature “Butterfly Diaries” is pitched along the lines of controversial series “13 Reasons Why” and Marti Noxon’s anorexia drama “To the Bone,” both on Netflix.

“The film addresses a very important issue that afflicts many young girls, made by a director who is also a young woman,” said co-producer Sara Silveira, of Dezenove Som e Imagens, Brazil.

In “Butterfly Diaries,” a Brazilian exchange program student in London struggles not only with the onset of puberty but with a mental disorder.

“As an artist, I believe that sometimes, a person has to go through a very painful trial just to have a glimpse of what he or she truly holds within himself or herself,” said Kim, adding: “It is a film about existential crisis.”

Drama, penned by Kim, will be shot in Portuguese with some English in the U.

Karlovy Vary Film Review: ‘Sueño Florianópolis’
Ana Katz, Julieta Zylberberg, and Maricel Álvarez in My Friend from the Park (2015)
There’s a lot of narrative in even the most uneventful family vacation. Removed from the daily domestic grind and cast into a shapeless routine of idling and ambling in unfamiliar surrounds, intimate tensions are placed in stark relief, and the mood can swing with the ocean tides from giddy togetherness to no-one-understands-me exasperation. And on even the most blissful getaways, you’ll swear at one point — if only for a split second — that you’re never doing this again. “Sueño Florianópolis,” a wry, rambling, suitably sunstruck group character study from Argentine writer-director Ana Katz, gets this, and makes that erratic emotional ebb and flow its structural M.O.

Premiering in competition at Karlovy Vary, “Sueño Florianópolis” is largely consistent with Katz’s oeuvre thus far in its gentle, thoughtful probing of everyday events and their more revealing implications. Thanks not only to its idyllic Brazilian coastal location, however, it’s one of her easiest,...

A Dubious Accusation Catches Fire In Intelligent, Ambivalent, Uncomfortably Topical ‘Liquid Truth’ [Transilvania Review]
In a well-worn municipal swimming pool in Brazil, the handsome, popular 33-year-old instructor Rubens (a superb Daniel de Oliveira) takes one of his best pupils, Alex (Luiz Felipe Mello), aside to check in with him. 6-year-old Alex has been morose since the last swim meet where he came second in a race he, and his dourly pushy father Davi (Marco Ricca), expected to win.

Transylvania Film Review: ‘Liquid Truth’
Thomas Vinterberg
An attractive male swimming instructor is accused of inappropriately kissing a six-year-old boy in Carolina Jabor’s perceptive, handsomely made “Liquid Truth.” Comparisons are inevitable with Thomas Vinterberg’s “The Hunt,” but the topic was hardly exhausted by that one film, and Jabor’s Brazilian take is less focused on the insidiously oppressive social atmosphere, though it hardly shies away from demonizing unproven accusations.

Taking inspiration from a play by Catalan author Josep Maria Miró and Ventura Pons’ 2015 film “Virus of Fear,” screenwriter Lucas Paraizo (“Gabriel and the Mountain”) brings heightened awareness to the pernicious conflation of homosexuality and pedophilia, and while some tightening is in order, “Liquid Truth” delivers a satisfying cinematic experience that resulted in several awards at the Rio de Janeiro Film Festival, including the audience prize.

Something’s bothering little Alex (Luiz Felipe Mello), but like most six-year-olds, he’s not very verbal. More likely than not,...
