Dawn French is returning to the BBC to star in sitcom Can You Keep A Secret?, and here are the details.

Dawn French came to prominence alongside comedy partner Jennifer Saunders in the alternative comedy boom of the 1980s, where they honed their craft at The Comedy Store and, later, The Comic Strip. That was alongside the likes of Alexei Sayle, Rik Mayall, Adrian Edmondson, Peter Richardson and Nigel Planer.

After appearing in The Young Ones, several Comic Strip films and Ruby Wax’s sitcom Girls On Top, French and Saunders starred in their eponymous sketch show, which ran on and off for over 30 years.

While Saunders became a solo star with Absolutely Fabulous, French played Gereldine Granger in Richard Curtis and Paul Mayhew-Archer’s The Vicar of Dibley, which grew into one of Britain’s most beloved sitcoms.

New Delhi, Dec 11 (Ians) Smartphone shipments are to remain flat in 2023 amid a global slowdown, as it is expected to continue underperforming through the first half of the year and start rising only from the third quarter of the year, a new report has shown.

According to Counterpoint Research, the global smartphone market will see 2 per cent (year-on-year) growth in 2023.

Smartphone shipments for 2022 lowered to 1.24 billion units on economic headwinds from the previous forecast.

“Persistent inflation, expectations of future interest rate hikes, souring corporate earnings, China’s stalled economy, the protracted Ukraine-Russia war, political turmoil in Europe, and a sweeping new set of export controls on China from the US, all contributes to the downward adjustment of the smartphone market forecast,” said Peter Richardson, Vice President at Counterpoint Research.

New Delhi, Dec 4 (Ians) China’s Byd Auto remained the global market leader, shipping more than 537,000 Ev units — an increase of 197 per cent (on-year) — in the third quarter this year, leaving Elon Musk-run Tesla far behind globally.

On the other hand, Tesla’s global sales grew only 43 per cent YoY in Q3 2022 to over 343,000 units, according to Counterpoint Research.

“The smoothing production ramp in Tesla’s Berlin factory helped deliver a record number of Model Ys in Germany this quarter. However, deliveries fell short of expectations due to logistics bottlenecks,” the report mentioned.

Byd’s top three models — Byd Song, Byd Qin and Byd Han — contributed to over 56 per cent of the company’s sales during the quarter.

Byd’s overseas operations have been picking up fast as it sold almost 17,000 Ev units across various regions including Europe, Latin America, Southeast Asia, Middle East and Africa, and Oceania in Q3.

The show follows former “Top Gear” host Jeremy Clarkson as he re-locates from London to the English countryside and tries to run a farm (called Diddly Squat) often with disastrous results. Fortunately, his trusty farmhands Kaleb, Gerald and Charlie – as well as his wife Lisa – are there to help the man who has been dubbed “Britain’s most unlikely farmer.”

New Delhi, Oct 7 (Ians) The connected car penetration surpassed that of non-connected cars for the first time ever globally, capturing almost 50.5 per cent share in the second quarter (Q2) this year.

5G-ready car sales surpassed half a million, though 4G accounted for 90 per cent of connected car sales.

According to Counterpoint Research, the US overtook China to lead the global connected car market and the top five automakers were Volkswagen, Toyota, Gm, Stellantis and Hyundai.

The US, China and Europe accounted for nearly 80 per cent of connected car sales in the quarter.

“The US market trailed China in terms of connected car sales in the first quarter of this year. However, with the resurgence of Covid-19 and plant shutdowns in China from March onwards, the US overtook China,” said senior analyst Soumen Mandal.

According to the report, automakers are focusing on using powerful on-board computers for next-generation connected mobility.

In Q1 2021, within just one year after the launch of the world's first commercial 5G network, almost one out of every three smartphones sold worldwide was supported by 5G.

Developed markets have been driving 5G adoption. However, this is expected to change as more emerging markets are starting to launch commercial 5G services, according to a white paper released by smartphone brand realme and Counterpoint Research.

In 2020, 5G phones in the low-to-mid-range price segments accounted for nearly 40 per cent of all 5G devices sold.

New Delhi, March 11 (Ians) Facebook-owned Oculus virtual reality (VR) headsets captured 53 per cent of the extended reality (Xr) headset shipments in 2020 which declined 9 per cent (on-year), a new report has said.

According to latest research from Counterpoint's 'Global Xr Model Tracker,' the annual decline was less than expected thanks to the Oculus Quest 2 performance during the holiday season.

The improved specifications like increased memory, larger battery life, and higher resolution and refresh rate, at an affordable price point were the clear drivers for Oculus growth.

"VR headsets captured more than 90 per cent of the total Xr shipments. The adoption of VR, mainly for standalone form-factor, is increasing, as the industry is showing significant advancements in design, specifications and features at reasonable prices," said Research Director Peter Richardson.

New Delhi, Dec 23 (Ians) Apple is likely to break previous sales records during its fiscal first quarter (October-December period) as the iPhone 12 is set to bolster global quarterly shipment growth for all iPhones to 21 per cent year-over-year (YoY), industry tracker Counterpoint Research said on Wednesday.

Record iPhone shipments for the fourth quarter will be driven not only by North America but also India, China, Japan, and countries in Europe, said the report.

"What we're seeing is a combination of things driving iPhone growth globally," Peter Richardson, Global Head of Research at Counterpoint, said in a statement.

These include pent up demand for a new 5G iPhone with both operators and consumers hungry for the new iPhone products, attractive prices on the iPhone 12 aided by bountiful promotional offers.

Dimension Films and Trancas International Films announced today that Halloween Returns, the next installment in the landmark Halloween horror franchise, will roll cameras this July, cementing Michael Meyers’ long-awaited return to the big screen.

Saw writers Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton penned the script for the new take, which is said to act as a “recalibration” for the series. Dunstan, the mastermind behind horror duology The Collector and The Collection, is also directing, with Malek Akkad producing.

Dunstan and Melton already have many successful collaborations under their collective belts. Their take on The Outer Limits is currently in development over at MGM, while they’ve also worked on Universal’s God of War and recently sold Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark as a pitch to CBS Films, which is still developing it into a film.

Scott Derrickson (Deliver Us From Evil, Sinister) is a busy man. He just signed on to direct "Doctor Strange" for Marvel and has now re-united with his "Sinister" co-writer C Robert Cargill to turn the classic 1960s sci-fi TV series "The Outer Limits" into a movie. "Outer Limits" was an anthology sci-fi and horror show that ran on ABC from 1963 to 1965. Derrickson is a longtime fan of the show, stating that he prefers it over "The Twilight Zone." He and Cargill will focus on one particular episode, "Demon With a Glass Hand," which includes time-travel, alien invasion and genetic manipulation. It focuses on a man with no memory beyond the last 10 days of his life and a computerized hand who discovers he is from the future. The man is being hunted by an alien race who see him as key to their survival, but he soon discovers a more complex and terrifying truth.

According to THR the writing team will be tackling time travel, an alien invasion, and genetic manipulation. The story will be an adaptation of an episode, "which focused on a man with no memory beyond the last 10 days and a computerized hand who discovers he is from the future. The man is being hunted by an alien race who see him as key to their survival but he soon discovers a more complex and terrifying truth."

It seems the only time I can find that I wrote about a possible big-screen adaptation of The Outer Limits was way back in 2004 when Rupert Wainwright (Stigmata) was attached to direct. Unless I'm missing something I haven't covered it before or since, but today THR brings word the newly crowned director of Marvel's Dr. Strange, Scott Derrickson, has been tapped to write a screenplay for the long gestating feature alongside his Sinister co-writer C. Robert Cargill. "The Outer Limits" was a sci-fi television program that first aired back in the mid-60s and was then remade and aired on Showtime from 1995 to 2002. MGM has been in the process of reviving some of their bigger properties. We’ve already seen their reboot of RoboCop, a reboot of Stargate was recently announced, and now, it has been revealed that they’ve hired the team behind Sinister to bring The Outer Limits to the big screen.

Rik Mayall has died at the age of 56.

The British comedy icon - best known for his roles in The Young Ones, Bottom and The New Statesman - passed away today (June 9), his management company has confirmed.

A statement from Mayall's management, Brunskill, said: "We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Rik Mayall who passed away this morning.

"We will be issuing a further statement in the fullness of time."

A Scotland Yard spokesman said officers were called by London Ambulance Service to a house in Barnes, south-west London at around 1.20pm, where "a man, aged in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene". He added that the death is not believed to be suspicious.

A London Ambulance Service spokesman also stated that they had been called to the house at 12.07pm.

It's Godzilla month for many of us. Why? A new movie is coming out! And here in Los Angeles, one of the best haunts in town - Creature Features - is holding a Godzilla-themed art show this Sunday (May 11th) from 1pm-5pm. When Creature Features was resurrected in Burbank, it came with some gallery space and that's where this tribute will be held. You have to respect the workmanlike filmmakers who keep working in our beloved horror department. Say what you will -- be it kind of critical -- of the films of Adam Gierasch and Jace Anderson. but there's always something to be said for indie-friendly horror freaks who simply keep churning out the movies. (Their better efforts include Autopsy (2008) and their early and underrated remake of The Toolbox Murders from 2004, although Mortuary, Night of the Demons, and Fertile Ground have their fans as well.)

And hey, the latest collaboration between Gierasch (director) and Anderson (co-writer) is a solid little combo of good ol' occult-based horror nastiness and an appreciable dose of downbeat film noir moodiness. While it has a few solid moments of straight scares and impressive gore, Fractured works best as a low-key character piece that feels like a respectful homage to The Outer Limits or Alan Parker's Angel Heart.
