Night of the Living Dead: The Official Story of the Film book coming in September
Image
Back in 1968, George A. Romero brought the world the horror classic Night of the Living Dead, the film that changed the definition of what “zombies” could be without even calling its ghouls zombies! This September, author Simon Braund is teaming up with Titan Books to bring us a 192 page book on the making of that masterpiece, Night of the Living Dead: The Official Story of the Film. To be exact, the book will be reaching store shelves on September 30th.

Directed by Romero from a screenplay he wrote with John A. Russo, Night of the Living Dead has the following synopsis: A disparate group of individuals takes refuge in an abandoned house when corpses begin to leave the graveyard in search of fresh human bodies to devour. The pragmatic Ben does his best to control the situation, but when the reanimated bodies surround the house, the other survivors begin to panic.

'Low-Budget Masterpiece': Stephen King Names the Scariest Horror Movie Ever
Image
Horror mastermind Stephen King has weighed in on the debate over which horror movie could be declared as the scariest of them all. While King acknowledged he may have picked other titles earlier on in life, there's one he has to "ultimately" name as the overall scariest horror film of all time.

King shared his thoughts in a new guest essay written for Variety. He clarified that, as a teenager, he'd have picked The Haunting, while by the late 1990s, he felt that The Blair Witch Project qualified as the scariest horror movie. Now, all things considered, King dubbed the classic zombie horror film Night of the Living Dead as the scariest horror film.

10 Movies That Prove Slow Zombies Are Scarier Than Fast Zombies
Image
Zombie movie fans are well aware of the fast versus slow debate. While zombies are depicted as fast chasers in great movies like 28 Days Later or Zombieland, the genre purists firmly believe that slow zombies are an innate part of the horror the creatures bring ever since early examples in cinema like White Zombie or I Walked With a Zombie. Even quintessential filmmaker George Romero has spoken against the use of fast zombies, as his vision was the sole blueprint for the modern zombie genre for a long time until the fast undead became popular.

Fast or slow, a good movie can make zombies terrifying or hilarious -- or both at the same time. Classics directed by Romero like 1968's Night of the Living Dead and 1979's Dawn of the Dead are canonical entries that feature slow zombies and heavily influenced what people have expected from the genre since then.

The Eye of Sauron & 9 Other Living Movie Metaphors, Explained
Image
Cinema uses metaphor and allegory to deliver important messages on topics like power, corruption, and consumerism. Characters in films, like Romero's zombies and Superman, represent deeper ideas and serve as symbols of hope or social commentary. Films like V For Vendetta and Frankenstein use characters as metaphors, representing the desire for freedom and the consequences of unchecked ambition.

Cinema has always been a way to impart tales of greater meaning to audiences, with stories like The Lord of the Rings being good examples of meaningful tales. While a simple, entertainment-driven narrative can be fun, some films elevate cinema through metaphor and allegory, using characters to represent something much deeper. Some of these metaphors can end up taking on a life of their own that transcends the film itself and becomes a common pop culture reference.

Symbolism and allegory can use an accessible and engaging medium, cinema, to deliver important messages.

One Night Of The Living Dead Scene Summoned A Crowd Of Curious Spectators
Image
George Romero's 1968 film "Night of the Living Dead" has become a cornerstone of horror movie history, but once upon a time it was just a little independent movie from a relatively untested director. While later Romero movies would have been able to draw crowds of fans clamoring to get a peek at the director or some of the stars he worked with, things were a little different when filming "Night of the Living Dead." The movie was shot in rural Pennsylvania, which meant there weren't many opportunities for crowds, but one sequence drew the locals out to take a peek. While filming a sequence in Evans City, Pennsylvania, which involved some of the film's undead "ghouls," local residents turned up in droves to catch a glimpse of one particular ghoul, and it had nothing to do with wanting to see the special effects makeup making her look undead.

All 17 George Romero Films, Ranked Worst To Best
Image
Even if George A. Romero had only made his zombie films, he would still have a well-earned spot in the cinematic canon. As famous as he is for his "...of the Dead" franchise, though, he's not recognized widely enough as a multi-talented auteur with an incisive lens on American politics and culture. Romero was a brilliant writer with an ear for naturalistic yet meaningful dialogue and an editor whose unique style — rapid-fire but loose, as narrative-driven as it is mood-driven — turned his films into arthouse fare for the masses.

Though most directors with any longevity have a few "lower-tier" works in their catalog, it can be difficult to rank Romero's films given how many bonafide classics he directed. This list will do just that. From missteps both early and late in his career to at least three masterpieces — each of which could easily take the number one spot — here are George A.

Pittsburghs’ most famous movie production returns American horror to its down-home roots, with excellent docu-drama direction and enthusiastic performances. It’s a 3-disc set, one 4K Uhd and two Blu-rays. Where’s the Bill ‘Chilly Billy’ Cardille theme song?

Katee Sackhoff Returns To Horror In Night Of The Animated Dead [Interview]
George A. Romero at an event for Land of the Dead (2005)
This has turned out to be a banner year for fans of the late director George A. Romero. First, there was the release of his long-lost 1975 film "The Amusement Park" and now his 1968 horror masterwork "Night of the Living Dead" has been faithfully remade in animation form by Warner Bros. and titled "Night of the Animated Dead." Voicing the small but crucial role of Judy (originally portrayed by Judith Ridley) is fan favorite actress Katee Sackhoff, who is best known for big sci-fi franchises: "Battlestar Galactica," "Riddick," "Another Life" and most recently "The Mandalorian." However, she has a history with the horror genre...

Fright-Rags’ Ben Scrivens Previews Night Of The Living Dead Trading Cards “Coming to Get You” on May 27th
Image
"There's not going to be five, or even ten of them! There's going to be twenty, thirty, maybe a hundred of those things."

Wednesday, May 27th will mark the beginning of the zombie apocalypse; Night of the Living Dead Trading Cards are "coming to get you," in a massive 81-card base set. According to Night of the Living Dead historian Jim Cirronella, this will be "the absolute best card set released for the film yet."

New York-based horror merchandise retailer Fright-Rags is trying their hand at the biggest horror trading card franchise out there. Having debuted over thirty years ago with eleven sets and countless singles being printed since, Night of the Living Dead trading cards pioneered the inclusion of autographed non-sports cards, which is now an industry standard.

Fright-Rags is famous for their licensed, original horror t-shirts, but they are no slouch in the trading card market, either. They've...

“They Won’t Stay Dead!”: The History and Undying Impact of Night Of The Living Dead Trading Cards
If trading cards are the ultimate Night of the Living Dead collectible, I'd also argue that Night of the Living Dead is the ultimate non-sports trading card. And it's because of the autographs. Stay with me...

The non-sports trading card scene was introduced to the subject of horror movies as early as the 1960s, with Nu Cards' Horror Monster Series and Topps' Monster Laffs, followed by You'll Die Laughing and Shocking Laffs in the 1970s.

What these cards had in common is that they depicted numerous early horror and contemporary B-horror movies in a satirical format. It seems that comedy was the only safe way to deliver horror trading cards to kid consumers of the era. Following blowback from the ban on Topps' famous 1962 sci-fi horror set, Mars Attacks, printers weren't taking any more chances.

It wasn't until the 1980s that individual horror flicks got their own dedicated, non-satirical...

The Criterion Collection Will Resurrect Night Of The Living Dead, Silence Of The Lambs With 4K Blu-Rays
The Silence of the Lambs and Night of the Living Dead, two bona fide horror gems, are officially joining the Criterion Collection.

Each film classic will receive a 4K restoration, along with scores of special features, which will be available from February 13th, 2018. Now how’s that for a Valentine’s Day treat?

On a more somber note, news of this re-release arrives at a difficult time for the horror community: Silence of the Lambs director Jonathan Demme passed away back in April, while George A. Romero, the undisputed king of zombies, died in July. Indeed, it was difficult losing two legendary filmmakers in the space of three months, but this posthumous recognition ensures their finest achievements are ushered into the pantheon of great cinema.

Each release will come with different bonus features – Lambs, for instance, includes audio commentary from Demme himself, along with Jodie Foster, Anthony Hopkins and screenwriter...

The Bottom Shelf: Damnation Alley and George A. Romero: Between Night And Dawn
Nick Aldwinckle Nov 27, 2017

Our latest round-up of genre DVDs and Blu-rays covers George A Romero, Damnation Alley and more...

With real life’s ridiculous news stories almost beyond parody, it seems fitting that 2017 was the year we saw George A. Romero, the master of satirical zombie tomfoolery, responsible for horror classics from Dawn Of The Dead through to Tales From The Dark Side, shuffle off this mortal coil. To commemorate three of Romero’s less celebrated early movies, Arrow Video has released the intriguing Between Night And Dawn set on Bluray, with ample extras to sate the most eager fanboy/girl.

First up, and by far the movie most will know (perhaps due to its 2010 remake), 1973's The Crazies plays out almost like a retread of Romero's 1968 debut Night Of The Living Dead, with a group of townsfolk again subject to a dodgy violence-inducing substance whilst military jackanapes try and control the epidemic.

A New Phase of Horror: Close-Up on "Night of the Living Dead"
Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead (1968) is playing October 1 - 31, 2017 in the United States as part of the series Prelude to Halloween. For all of its social and cinematic influence, its current notoriety as the granddaddy of the contemporary zombie movie (and television show and comic book and videogame), George A. Romero’s 1968 debut, Night of the Living Dead, was a remarkably unassuming production. Shot in mid- through late-1967 on a budget of around $114,000, with a cast and crew of unknown actors and amateur locals, the film went on to accumulate an international gross of more than $30 million, setting the standard for a progressively popular horror sub-genre in the process. One now marvels at its systematic structure, its discerning formal design, its clever manipulation of time and space, and its shrewd exploitation of generic conventions.

Night Of The Living Dead (1968) Review
by Jesse Miller, MoreHorror.com

It was in 1968 when the godfather of zombie films, George A. Romero, released the independent, nightmarish film Night of the Living Dead.

Though White Zombie deserves the praise as the first feature-length zombie film -, Romero's "Dead" series is the set of zombie films all following zombie films were influenced and defined by.

Shot in black and white, "Night Of The Living Dead" revolutionized, defined and popularized the splatter film and was a superb example of what could be achieved and captured on a minuscule budget, paving the way for the independent horror films of the 70's and 80's.

The story opens with sister and brother Barbra and Johnny visiting their father's grave, when reanimated corpses suddenly attack them. Johnny is lost in the attack but Barbra flees and seeks refuge in an abandoned farmhouse.

It's not long before another fleeing survivor; Ben (played by...

‘Night of the Living Dead’: Film Review
Image
Until the Supreme Court establishes clear-cut guidelines for the anatomy of violence, “Night of the Living Dead” will serve nicely as outer-limit definition by example. In a mere 90 minutes, this horror film (pun intended) casts serious aspersions on the integrity and social responsibility of its Pittsburgh-based makers, distrib Walter Reade, the film industry as a whole and exhibs who book the pic, as well as raising doubts about the future of the regional cinema movement and about the moral health of filmgoers who cheerfully opt for this unrelieved orgy of sadism.

Although pic’s basic premise is repellent – recently dead bodies are resurrected, via that old fright-film debbil radiation, and begin killing human beings in order to eat their flesh – it is in execution that the film distastefully excels.

No brutalizing stone is left unturned: crowbars gash holes in the heads of the “living dead,” people are shot in the...
