Star Trek Isnt Supposed To Have Money: What Is Latinum?
Image
Star Trek envisions a future without money, where humanity has evolved beyond the need for possessions or wealth accumulation. Latinum serves as the primary currency in the Star Trek universe, encased in gold and used by various species including the Ferengi. Starfleet officers are compensated through non-monetary means, driven by the pursuit of knowledge, discovery, and betterment of humanity instead.

In Star Trek's utopian society of the future, humanity has evolved beyond the use of money. This fact comes out most frequently when Starfleet officers come up against people from Earth's past, such as Captain James T. Kirk's (William Shatner) frank confession to Dr. Gillian Taylor (name) in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home that the future has no money, or 1990s financier Ralph Offenhouse (Peter Mark Richman) awakening in the 24th century to find that plans to provide for his financial future have been dashed in Star Trek: The Next Generation...

The Lie of Jason Takes Manhattan’s Marketing Still Hurts Friday the 13th Fans
Image
“New York has a new problem,” declared the tagline for Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, complete with a picture of Jason’s hockey mask behind the city’s iconic skyline. To some modern readers, that tagline might seem silly. Sure, New York has its problems, but the arrival of a near-invincible, teleporting killer is orders of magnitude worse than anything currently happening in the Big Apple. Why would producers lump Jason Voorhees in with those other issues?

But when the movie released back in 1989, New York City existed in the popular imagination as a cesspool of violence, corruption, and danger. It was a nigh apocalyptic hellscape and promised to be a true challenge for the world’s most proficient killer of horny teens.

Sadly, it turns out that New York didn’t need to worry about Jason at all. Outside of a killer crane shot in Times Square,...

The Final Girls From The Friday The 13th Franchise, Ranked
Image
When you think slashers, your mind immediately goes to the Final Girl. While the term wasn't coined until 1992, it was a prevalent trope throughout the '70s and '80s, namely through such works as "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" (Sally Hardesty), "Black Christmas" (Jess Bradford), and "Halloween" (Laurie Strode). These trendsetting heroines cemented the idea that women could be the heroes of their own stories. In many cases, the Final Girl just happened to be the last woman standing through sheer luck; in others, they slashed their way to triumph all on their own. One of the franchises most known for its many Final Girls is "Friday the 13th," which dominated the 1980s and showcased some of the slasher genre's most iconic protagonists.

Throughout its run 一 from the 1980 original to the 2009 remake 一 the series' Final Girls have run the gamut. Some are tough-as-nails warriors from the get-go,...

The Arrow in the Head Show digs deep into Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan
Kevin Bacon, Adrienne King, Ari Lehman, Robbi Morgan, Betsy Palmer, and Jeannine Taylor in Friday the 13th (1980)
The Arrow in the Head Show hosts John “The Arrow” Fallon and Lance Vlcek are clearly two guys who are after my own heart. I say this because Friday the 13th is my favorite franchise, so I find that I can never go too long without watching a Friday the 13th movie. The Arrow and Lance seem to be right there with me, because they talk about Friday the 13th movies with some frequency – and in the latest episode of The Arrow in the Head Show, they’re taking a deep dive into the 1989 sequel Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (watch it Here)! To find out what they had to say about Jason Takes Manhattan, check out the video embedded above.

Written and directed by Rob Hedden, Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan has the following synopsis: Mass murderer Jason Voorhees is resurrected from the bottom of Crystal Lake.

Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan – Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie?
Rob Hedden and Kane Hodder in Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989)
It’s time for a new episode of our Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? video series, and in this one we’re looking back at a poorly-received entry in a beloved slasher franchise. A movie that marked the end of an era. The horror movie covered in this episode is Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (watch it Here), which was not only the last Friday the 13th to be released in the 1980s (since it came out in ’89), but also the last one to be distributed solely by Paramount Pictures. After this one, there would be a four year break between films while the franchise moved over to New Line Cinema. Why was Jason Takes Manhattan so underwhelming that Paramount gave up on Friday the 13th? Find out by taking a look at the video embedded above.

Emmys 2021 In Memoriam: Who was not honored in the emotional tribute segment?
Image
Producers of the 73rd annual Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony honored almost all of the expected people who died this past year. Who was not featured during the emotional In Memoriam segment Sunday night on CBS? Prominent performers and character actors such as Frank Bonner, Sean Connery, Michael Constantine, Abby Dalton, James Hampton, Bruce Kirby, Norman Lloyd, Helen Reddy and Jane Withers were not part of the 49 people included.

While over 100 celebrated television people died since last year’s event in mid-September of 2020, the segment generally only makes room for less than 50. Among those featured Sunday night: TV Academy Hall of Fame members actor Ed Asner, production designer Roy Christopher, actress Cloris Leachman, writer/producer William Link and actress Cicely Tyson. Current nominee Michael K. Williams (“Lovecraft Country”) and “Saturday Night Live” veteran Norm Macdonald sadly passed away this month as well.

SAG Awards 2021 In Memoriam: Sunday’s special segment will honor Chadwick Boseman, Oliva de Havilland, Cicely Tyson and who else?
Image
Even though Sunday’s SAG Awards ceremony will be shortened to just one pre-taped hour on TNT and TBS, the special In Memoriam segment will still be a highlight. Since the 2020 event aired on January 19, it will be over 14 months until the one on April 4. That means even more actors, actresses and members of SAG/AFTRA will hopefully be honored than the 40 people in the tribute last year.

Chadwick Boseman died last August and is a four-time nominee for the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday. The two individual nominations are for his leading role in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and his supporting performance in “Da 5 Bloods.” Those two films also are nominated for the top ensemble category.

Oscar winners who have died in the past 14 months include Sean Connery, Olivia de Havilland, Cloris Leachman and Christopher Plummer. Academy Award nominees include Boseman, Kirk Douglas, Hal Holbrook, Ian Holm,...

Dark Intruder

Blu ray

Kino Lorber

1965 / 1.85:1 / 59 min.

Starring Leslie Nielsen, Peter Mark Richman, Judi Meredith

Cinematography by John F. Warren

Directed by Harvey Hart

Produced in 1965, Universal Pictures intended Dark Intruder for television but when NBC executives screened the film they took a pass—set in the goth-friendly year of 1890, Barré Lyndon’s story, with overtones of Lovecraft and demonic possession, was deemed “too scary” for the living room audience. That same audience would weather an entire season of My Mother the Car so perhaps Hollywood was underestimating America’s ability to deal with adversity. Universal was undeterred—now officially a “feature”, Harvey Hart’s film opened that summer in Los Angeles alongside Torn Curtain and in New York on the bottom half of a bill with I Saw What You Did (Manhattanites were treated to a personal appearance from Joan Crawford).

With the advent of roadshow attractions like Lawrence of Arabia,...

Class of 1989: Jason Voorhees Brings Crystal Lake Kills to The Big Apple in Friday The 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan
[We're celebrating some of the most memorable horror and sci-fi movies of 1989 this month in Daily Dead's Class of 89 retrospective series! Check back on Daily Dead throughout the rest of August for more special features celebrating the 30th anniversaries of a wide range of horror and sci-fi films!]

Whew! Now, that is a long movie title! We can't close out the 1980s without discussing Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan. Coincidentally, Part VIII would be the last movie released in Paramount’s original Friday the 13th timeline, and it was released in 1989, the last year of the decade. But, let's not talk so much about the end and focus instead on celebrating what I believe to be one of the most Gif-able slasher movies ever.

Rob Hedden's Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan follows the senior class of Lakeview High School as they set sail towards the bright lights of New York City. It's not long after the Lazarus takes off that good ol' Jason boards the ship to do what he does best: terrorize and kill the unsuspecting passengers on board. Side note: I can't help but notice that the ship's name...

Star Trek: The Next Generation Essential Episodes

These 25 Star Trek: The Next Generation stories are the series’ unmissable episodes…

This article comes from Den of Geek UK.

Leading the charge back to television for the Star Trek franchise, and paving the way for three further series to follow, Star Trek: The Next Generation's seven seasons had some very high points, and a couple of very low ones

These are the top 25 “must-watch” episodes, not necessarily the top 25 for quality, or indeed my 25 favorites, but the 25 stories that give you the best flavor of the series and its relatively unplanned story arcs. Just don’t forget that, like The Original Series, The Next Generation is a product of its time, and as such certain issues that writers wanted to bring to the screen not only necessitated allegory, but sometimes stretched it thin so as not to raise issues with censorship.

From Swordfights in Paris to Dropping the Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima: Parker Evening
Eleanor Parker today: Beautiful as ever in Scaramouche, Interrupted Melody Eleanor Parker, who turns 91 in ten days (June 26, 2013), can be seen at her most radiantly beautiful in several films Turner Classic Movies is showing this evening and tomorrow morning as part of their Star of the Month Eleanor Parker "tribute." Among them are the classic Scaramouche, the politically delicate Above and Beyond, and the biopic Interrupted Melody, which earned Parker her third and final Best Actress Academy Award nomination. (Photo: publicity shot of Eleanor Parker in Scaramouche.) The best of the lot is probably George Sidney’s balletic Scaramouche (1952), in which Eleanor Parker plays one of Stewart Granger’s love interests — the other one is Janet Leigh. A loose remake of Rex Ingram’s 1923 blockbuster, the George Sidney version features plenty of humor, romance, and adventure; vibrant colors (cinematography by Charles Rosher); an elaborately staged climactic swordfight; and tough dudes...

It Came From 1980 X: Judgement Day (1988)
Welcome to a brand spanking new weekly column here on The Liberal Dead. What you’ll find on It Came From 1980 X is the finest (you know the Colt 45 variety) in films from the VHS era that may or may not have made it to DVD and may or may not be worth a watch. It’s time to unwrap the magnetic tape from the heads of our Vcr’s and open our eyes the way the once were. You can consider this your virtual Mom and Pop video store. That doesn’t mean we sell or rent tapes by any means. Unfortunately there’s just no way to make renting our beloved medium of choice possible for us at this time without losing our entire stock to the private collections of you super creepies. Instead we’ll recommend the movies, and you’ll be responsible for salvaging them...

Flashback: Bridget & Jerome Dobson - Santa Barbara's Guiding Lights 1984
Veterans Bridge, Jerome Dobson

'Santa Barbara's' Guiding Lights

By Julie Richard

Los Angeles Times

July 28, 1984

While prime-time series come and go, daytime dramas generally go on and on, so when a new serial enters the field, the trick is to lure away loyal viewers already ensconced in the machinations of their favorite soap characters.

Two veteran soap writers, Bridget and Jerome Dobson, hope to do just that with Santa Barbara, which they've created, executive produce and write and which premieres on NBC on Monday at 2 p.m. The Dobsons are optimistic that Santa Barbara will not only find a niche in the soap world but also eventually become No. 1.

"It's young viewers we want to catch," Bridget said, "because viewers who've been watching soaps 20 years don't change. It's very hard to woo them away. It's the new viewers we want."

To that end, the Dobsons have developed a show which,...

Alfred Hitchcock in Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955)
New TV on DVD releases this week
Alfred Hitchcock in Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955)
Here are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.

Finally, season 4 of Alfred Hitchcock Presents is on DVD. I say finally because this season contains one of my favorite episodes of any TV series ever, "Man with a Problem," with Elizabeth Montgomery, Gary Merrill, and Peter Mark Richman. It has a great twist ending (you can watch it here). I have to start buying this show on DVD.

The Golden Age of Television DVD is a Criterion Collection set and includes some great live TV episodes, including "Marty," "Days of Wine and Roses," "The Comedian," "Requiem for a Heavyweight," "No Time For Sergeants," "A Wind from the South," and "Bang The Drum Slowly." Also comes with extensive commentaries and interviews and a booklet.

The International (Sony) An Interpol agent (Clive Owen) joins forces with a Manhattan D.A. (Naomi Watts) to bring down an arms dealing ring and a corrupt global banking cartel that’s funding them. Superlative thriller was oddly ignored by critics and audiences alike, but expertly blends intelligence (courtesy screenwriter Eric Warren Singer’s masterfully-crafted script) and full-throttle action (director Tom Tykwer stages one of the great film shoot-outs in New York’s iconic Guggenheim Museum), making this dynamite thriller reminiscent of the best work from masters such as John Frankenheimer and Robert Aldrich. Armin Mueller-Stahl is wonderful as a world-weary covert op. Bonuses: Extended scene; Featurettes; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.

The Jack Lemmon Film Collection(Sony) Five films from the two-time Oscar winning actor, focusing on his early career: Phfft! is a zippy comedy from 1954, one of Lemmon’s earliest films, in which...

Dynasty: 20 Years Ago, The Carringtons & Colbys Said Goodbye -- How Did It End?
In its heyday, Dynasty was one of the most popular shows on television and spawned hundreds of products and a short-lived spin-off (The Colbys). The nation loved to see rich people have lots of outrageous problems.

Dynasty revolves primarily around the wealthy Carrington family. As the series begins, oil baron Blake Carrington (John Forsythe) has fallen in love with secretary Krystle (Linda Evens) and the two marry. Blake's daughter Fallon (Pamela Sue Martin, later Emma Samms) resents her while his gay son Steven (Al Corley, later Jack Coleman) is sympathetic. The series really took off once Blake's infamous ex-wife, Alexis (Joan Collins), showed up.

Other ongoing characters are played by Gordon Thomson, John James, Michael Nader, Heather Locklear, Pamela Bellwood, Diahann Carroll, Catherine Oxenberg, Lee Bergere, Leann Hunley, Kathleen Beller, Geoffrey Scott, Christopher Cazenove, Terri Garber, Wayne Northrop, Al Corley, Ted McGinley, Michael Praed, Lloyd Bochner, Peter Mark Richman, and Paul Burke.
