Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story Review: A Dutiful Celebration of a Legend
Image
It’s Liza with a Z. Not Lisa with an S. Liza Minnelli is among those rare, true living legends who seem irreplaceable. Irreplaceable both in that their talent is immense and that it literally appears nobody from a younger generation has the capacity to do as many things as well as she did them. In Liza we have an iconic singer, dancer, and actor. And let’s not forget a pioneer of fashion! One thinks of peers like Barbra Streisand and Cher as apt comparisons and very few others.

Bruce David Klein’s new documentary Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story is an unabashed celebration of the woman as told by all of her best friends. Celebrity talking heads like Mia Farrow, Ben Vereen, Chita Rivera, and Joel Grey speak effervescently about Minnelli. Singer and good friend Michael Feinstein emerges as the central storyteller of the film, alongside Minnelli herself.

Kyle Richards
The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Recap: Whites Only
Kyle Richards
Kyle Richards, the person who invented white parties and runs the world’s most famous one out of her backyard in Beverly Hills, tried to get away with wearing pale pink to a white party in the Hamptons. First of all, as the summer enclave of New York City’s one percent, every party in the Hamptons is essentially a whites party, so to have a white party for Lisa Vanderpump’s cover of Bella magazine — a periodical than can only be found in dermatologist’s offices and abandoned in the back of Ubers like last night’s panties — is a bit redundant. Eventually, Kyle Richards, who gets $1,000 and three Fatburgers every time someone throws a white party around the globe, came to her senses and wore white to the Hamptons. Boy, do we love it when these girls travel.Speaking of traveling, I would like to thank Ben Rimalower,...

Before We Go (2014)
The Real Housewives of New York City Recap: Turks and Cuckoos
Before We Go (2014)
I think that the Real Housewives, as actual biological creatures, are starting to mutate. Before their capacity for drama was huge, much larger than the average human being's, but as exposure to stress, fame, pinot grigio fumes, and other things that cause cellular degradation, the woman have started to morph and exhibit superhuman capacities. I’m talking mainly about the way that they now handle confrontation with each other. The Housewives' metabolism for drama is increasing exponentially. They go from one skirmish to the next, finding resolution and forgiveness along the way, at a lightning pace. It’s sort of like a hummingbird with a thyroid condition and access to three kindergartens’ worth of Adhd medication. The speed is staggering, and it would break your neck if any of the things they were fighting about were actually worth looking at.Before we go any further, I have to thank Ben Rimalower,...

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Recap: Case of Brandi
Ben Rimalower
Brandi did something stupid. Okay, Brandi did a whole lot of stupid things. That could be the summation of just about every episode of Real Bartles and James of Promises Malibu, but last night, hoo-boy. What a doozy. But before we can get into that, my thanks go out to the delightful Ben Rimalower, who covered for me last week when I was Morocco doing field research for the Real Housewives Institute’s upcoming exhibition on Countess Crackerjack’s Camel Incident of 2010.First of all, Brandi and Lisa had the most sanctified of Real Housewives ceremonies: an attrition lunch. (Why does the attrition always happen at lunch? Why can’t it happen at breakfast or lessert, which is a meal I created where you eat dessert for lunch?) I thought Lisa handled herself brilliantly at lunch, and she actually said something that really struck a chord with me. She said...

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Recap: It’s My Party and I’ll Pry If I Want To
Brian Moylan, your regular Rhobh recapper, is on hiatus for a week. Please welcome the Moylan-approved Ben Rimalower. The previews for this week’s episode of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills showed Brandi offering Lisa oral sex and much discussion of, namely, “cunnilingus.” Reality-television fans are wise to the ways networks lure us back each week, but this seemed like an awful lot of talk for something that wasn’t really going to happen. Would the franchise finally deliver the girl-on-girl action its name promised long ago when something pornographic might be inferred, before Real Housewives became a brand?Of course not. And while there was a great deal of pseudo sexually charged grandstanding (beyond dirty talk, there was boob-squeezing, ass-pinching, some light S&M, and even a wet T-shirt contest), actual sex seemed to be the furthest thing from any of the women’s minds. This was all about power — Lisa Vanderpump’s power,...

The Past Is Future for Patti LuPone
It may come as a surprise to learn that while Patti LuPone was notching her humongous success as Eva Peron in Broadway's Evita, she was lonely. "It was a difficult role to sing," she says from her Gypsy dressing room, "so I would sing and then shut up. There was no social life at all." And that, in a nutshell, is why she agreed to do her now-legendary 27-week, Saturdays-only nightclub stint at Manhattan's Les Mouches, a recording of which Ghostlight Records has just released on CD as, appropriately enough, Patti LuPone at Les Mouches. It's already getting the kind of chart attention the acclaimed singer-actor has never received theretofore.Racing around her space backstage at the St. James Theatre, LuPone reports that in 1980, when she was booked for four weeks but kept getting extended, neither she nor anyone else thought about a live recording. Nonetheless, most — if not all — of the evenings were recorded.
