Philip Seymour Hoffman's Best Movies, Ranked
Image
Philip Seymour Hoffman's movies are one of a kind because the talented actor always brought a characteristic depth to his roles, as no matter how much is revealed about his characters, it always seems like there's more to figure out. Hoffman also had great range; he was capable to switch from nonchalant to furious, serious to comical. He sadly passed away in 2014, though his son, Cooper Hoffman, carries on his legacy.

Hoffman has an extensive filmography that appeases all tastes, and although it includes modern classics such as The Big Lebowski and Synecdoche, New York, these movies are either too divisive or Hoffman plays too small of a role to count them as his best. The movies where he truly stands out are bold and thought-provoking pieces where he's got the freedom of a lead role to carry the narrative by himself, or are otherwise highly-rated movies where Hoffman...

Director Matt Spicer on the Instagram Culture of ‘Ingrid Goes West’
It could be easy to dismiss Ingrid Goes West as an attack on society’s newfound reliance on social media, perhaps a not too distant cousin of some Black Mirror episode; but the truth is somewhat more layered. Yes – Ingrid focuses on a troubled woman (Aubrey Plaza) consumed by the ideal Instagram lives of others (Elizabeth Olsen & Wyatt Russell) to the point where she moves to La and befriends said Insta-couple so as to be Exactly like them. Which (to be fair) paints a rather ‘stalkery’/Talented Mr. Ripley-esque portrait of social media. Yet the film also …...

Luke Skywalker's Lightsaber Sold For $450,000 at Auction!
It was the weapon of choice by everyone's favorite Jedi in a galaxy far, far away and its worth about as much as a house. The Hollywood Reporter reports that the lightsaber prop used by Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back sold for just about a half a million dollars to the Ripley company, which is based in Orlando.

The lightsaber was part of the collection owned by producer Gary Kurtz and may be on display at one of the Believe It or Not locations around the country, but the company hasn't specified which one yet, the newspaper reported.

The lightsaber may have sold for a ton of cash ($450,000), but it's not even close to being the biggest Star Wars item auctioned off, an original R2-D2 unit that was used for the original trilogy sold for nearly $3 million.

Southern Charm Savannah's Dinner Party Takes a Threatening Turn
Southern Charm Savannah (2017)
Hospitality isn't a given in Savannah. Southern Charm Savannah's cast is still obsessed with Nelson Lewis' past, and we kind of can't blame them? The guy basically pulled a Talented Mr. Ripley in Washington, D.C.,  pretending to be Rep. Jack Kingston, back in 2011 when he was an Fnc staffer and Laura Ingraham Show producer. Since the Bravo reality series' debut, Nelson's political scandal has dominated dinner table conversations and caused a chorus of whispers at social gatherings. And one of his friend's has finally had enough. "Why are everyone's lives so small that you care what happened with Nelson?" Ashley Borders asks at the beginning of E!...

Newswire: Marilyn Monroe’s “Happy Birthday” dress fetches $4.8 million at auction
It’s one of the most unforgettable, uncomfortable moments of 20th century pop culture: Marilyn Monroe serenading President John F. Kennedy as he turned 45 with a sultry, breathy rendition of “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” in May 1962. Considering that Monroe and Kennedy were widely rumored to have been lovers, this might have been some of the most brazenly inappropriate public flirting of all time.

Monroe’s gown from that evening—a skintight, flesh-colored, crystal-bedecked Jean Louis creation based on a Bob Mackie sketch—became an icon in its own right. And this week, the souffle gauze garment brought in a whopping $4.8 million at auction, far exceeding the $3 million guide price. Purchased on Thursday by the RIpley’s Believe It Or Not museum chain (presumably as a future exhibit), the clingy dress was the centerpiece of an extensive, three-day auction of Monroe’s possessions at Julien’s ...

Marilyn Monroe’s ‘Happy Birthday, Mr. President’ Dress Sells for $4.81 Million at Auction
Marilyn Monroe
When Marilyn Monroe passed away in 1962, she was already an icon – but her legacy has surpassed any thing she could have imagined. Her visage adorns every type of paraphernalia imaginable, her impersonators crowd Times Square and Hollywood Boulevard, and of course, there was that time that superfans could buy a lock of her hair aboard a cruise ship for a reasonable $8,000.

And at an auction hosted by Julien’s, which began on Thursday and will continue through the weekend, one of the actress’s most recognizable gowns, the one she wore to wish President John F. Kennedy a very sexy happy birthday,...

The Iron Giant Screen Friday Night at Webster University
“So we can’t call Ripley’s Believe it or Not, because… they wouldn’t believe it.”

The Iron Giant screens Friday night, April 15th at 9:30pm in Webster University’s Winifred Moore Auditorium (470 E. Lockwood Ave.). The screening is Free

Without doubt one of the very best animated films of the past twenty years, Brad Bird’s The Iron Giant (1999) is a fabulous love letter to 1950s science fiction b-movies and b-fiction. The central figure is as grand and cool a physical design for a robot as ever put on film; perfectly balanced with the character of the robot.

The Iron Giant (voiced by Vin Diesel), befriended by a young boy named Hogarth (voiced by Eli Marienthal) who is himself a Sf b-movie junkie during the reactionary 1950s time period, engages the boy and his beatnik confidant Dean McCoppin (Harry Connick) with his trust. The Iron Giant comes to understand his own nature,...

120 Essential Horror Scenes Part 9: Jump Scares & False Alarms
The jump scare is a uniquely horror movie convention. Where some movies use it as an excuse to play peekaboo and assault you with noise, others use it as a way to shatter your complacency as a viewer. It’s the purest form of scare: something bursts out of a dark corner, a loud noise cuts the tension, or a jolt to the plot comes on so unexpected, you don’t know what hit you. It may just be a momentary fright, but a good horror movie will put you on edge and keep you there.

****

Alien (1979)- No blood, no Dallas

Horror purists are of the mind that jumps are cheap, and, for the most part, they are. Yet, in those nerve-wracking scenes, when a director knows exactly what they are doing, it’s riveting. I’ve always prided myself on not being one of those people who gets jumpy during a horror movie,...

Matt Damon Thinks Jason Bourne Could Beat Up Batman, Is Probably Right
Matt Damon
Ben Affleck has won two Oscars; Matt Damon has only won one. Matt Damon slept with Sarah Silverman; Ben Affleck slept with Jimmy Kimmel. Now that the two of them are action stars again, which one of their onscreen alter egos would win in a fight? Matt Damon has one theory: "Jason Bourne would kick the s--t out of Batman — absolutely!" Damon said when posed the question by EW. "Batman’s gotta take on Superman first. If he could beat him then maybe he could take on Jason Bourne." He makes a good point: Batman's movement is often limited by his cumbersome suit, and Jason Bourne has been known to do some damage with only a ballpoint pen. But that doesn't answer the question the people really want answered: Would the talented Mr. Ripley beat the, umm, well-intentioned Mr. Gigli?...

Bad Ideas: Films We’re Glad Never Got Made
While we often lament some of the films that end up stuck in development Hell, never to become realized on the big screen, there are some films we should all be glad never came to fruition.

Sometimes they don’t get it! We all know that the film industry is a business and they want to make money, but Hollywood doesn’t always realize that the best way to do that is to make a good film. Sometimes, Hollywood’s habit of taking a known property and stretching them out to absurd proportions proves that they just don’t get the point. Fortunately, there are times when someone recognizes a bad idea and puts on the brakes. Below is a list of 14 films where someone was smart enough to notice that they were making a pile of trash and threw in the towel.

"Hannibal" Showrunner On Third Season Tone
On the eve of the premiere of the third season of NBC's"Hannibal," show runner Bryan Fuller has spoken with THR about the new season which boasts not just key new characters but a "dreamlike" quality as he calls it.

It won't be until the fourth episode of the season where we see events directly after last season's finale with much of the cast seemingly left for dead. The premiere on the other hand kicks off eight months later with Hannibal and Bedelia right in the thick of it in Florence. Also by ditching the murder of the week elements, Fuller says it allows us "just to connect the characters and their honest pursuit of Hannibal".

Each of the first seven episodes have a "movie paradigm" as he calls it, with the episode being akin to a famous movie. The first is " a bit of Talented Mr. Ripley" with the...

A Perfect Man | 2015 Colcoa Film Festival Review
Words With Friends: Gozlan’s Stylish Noir all Amalgamated Pulp

Enjoyably anxious, director Yann Gozlan’s sophomore feature A Perfect Man (Un homme idéal) would better recall suspense masters like Hitchcock or Chabrol if its narrative felt a little less familiar. As such, it seems more like the B noir cousin of the cinema Gozlan is in conversation with rather than a revisionist take on one of cinema’s greatest femme fatales—karma. Featuring an excellent lead performance from recent Cesar award winning actor Pierre Niney, there’s much to admire even as Gozlan overdoses with increasing complications that hinge on the ludicrous.

Mathieu Vasseur (Niney) is an aspiring novelist, whose first manuscript, The Man From Behind, has been promptly rejected by publishers. Working vaguely as some sort of janitorial staff and/or garbage man, Vasseur stumbles into a lecture being given about scent’s relationship to memory and literature...

10 Reasons Prometheus 2 Should Be Scrapped For Alien 5
20th Century Fox

Believe it or not, it’s already been two whole years since Ridley Scott’s Prometheus graced our screens and…produced one of the most venomously divisive reactions to any blockbuster in recent memory.

Even ignoring that, its box office gross was a solid $403 million, ensuring Fox were eager to press on with a follow-up, tentatively titled Paradise, which would presumably see sole survivor Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) carrying android David’s (Michael Fassbender) head with her to the Engineer homeworld in order to find out why they wanted to wipe out humanity.

Though we can’t deny that there’s at least some interesting potential there, we’re still waiting on tenterhooks for a fifth Alien film, something both James Cameron and Ridley Scott expressed an interest in pursuing last decade (with Cameron writing and Scott directing), though Cameron has changed his mind since the AvP movies happened,...

Patrick Wilson, Jessica Biel, & Imogen Poots Join 'The Blunderer'; Toby Kebbell & Nicholas Hoult Will Build A 'Sand Castle'
It’s a casting-o-rama Friday. With Cannes around the corner and the entire industry getting together for their quarterly wheeling and dealing, it means a lot of pacts are being made. Perhaps the most interesting is the adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel ‘The Blunderer.” She is obviously the writer of the Talented Mr. Ripley series and this non-Ripley-centered psychological thriller will star Patrick Wilson, Jessica Biel, Toby Jones and Imogen Poots. Andy Goddard will direct. [Deadline] Former “Downton Abbey” star Dan Stevens and “Boardwalk Empire” lead Michael Pitt are on the rise. They’ll both star alongside John Travolta in the drama, “Criminal Activities.” Actor Jackie Earle Haley will make his directing debut and the film centers on four friends who make a risky investment together that puts them in trouble with the mob. Ja from Mnpp here, back from vacation with a brand new round of "Beauty Vs. Beast." So here's the question (or rather the first question): what's your favorite Francis Ford Coppola movie? The legendary helmer's turning 75 today and so we look back through his work - the Godfathers, the Conversations, the Peggy Sues... the super sad undead love stories... listen, I'm not going to argue that his 1992 version of Dracula is his best film - I'd rather make it through the day without y'all calling the men in white suits to my door, thank you very much. But it's surely the movie of his I've watched the most times and have gotten the most pleasure from (give or take some Rob Lowe coming out of the shower in The Outsiders). The old fashioned effects work, Eiko Ishioka's astounding costumes - I wore my copy of the behind-the-scenes book down to a nub.

Mindy Newell: Who’s The Real You When You’re Writing?
“Whenever there is a decline of righteousness and rise of unrighteousness then I send forth Myself.”

—Lord Krishna to Prince Arjuna,The Bhagavadgita (Song of God)

Sanskrit in origin, and a central principle of the Hindu religion, an avatar is defined in the Merriam-Webster dictionary as “the incarnation of a deity in human or animal form to counteract an evil in the world. A central principle of Hinduism, it usually refers to 10 appearances of Vishnu, including an incarnation as the Buddha Gautama and the Buddha yet to come, called Kalkin.”

In the 21st century, it has also come to mean that little picture that represents the user, blogger, columnist, commentator, gamer, or fan on the Internet, and (usually) will tell you something about that person, whether it is whom that user, blogger, columnist, commentator, gamer, or fan admires or identifies with, or even their sense of humor about themselves. Cate Blanchett Honors Philip Seymour Hoffman During BAFTA Acceptance Speech
She’s one of the most-respected actresses in the industry, so it’s no wonder Cate Blanchett scored the Best Actress trophy at the 2014 BAFTA Awards last night (February 16).

The “Blue Jasmine” babe looked lovely as she took the stage and dedicated her award to her “Talented Mr. Ripley” costar, the late Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Cate explained, "I would like to dedicate this to an actor who has been a continual, profound touchstone for me, a monumental presence who is now so sadly in absence: the late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman.”

Blanchett added, "Phil, your monumental talent, your unflinching quest for truth both in art and in life will be missed by so many people. You raised the bar continually. Phil, buddy, this is for you, you bastard. Hope you're proud."

And during her press room interview, Cate continued, "I don't think I'm alone in the room having been profoundly...

Owning Mahoney – The DVD Review
Review by Sam Moffitt

I was as shocked and saddened as anyone at hearing of the death of Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Not that long ago I wrote a review of Jack Goes Boating for We Are Movie Geeks, directed by Hoffman and starring him in an amazing performance. I’m glad I did that as I had no way of knowing Hoffman wouldn’t be with us much longer. I cannot comment on the problems he had with addictions. I had my own substance issues for years. I never lost a job or stole anything to support any habit and I never had to go into rehab, I simply quit using anything. Two cups of coffee is about as wild as I get these days.

Of course the Hollywood haters came out on the internet and in newspaper letter columns slamming Hoffman and the entire Hollywood lifestyle. Again, I can...

Matt Damon Thinks Philip Seymour Hoffman Was ‘One of the Best Actors to Ever Live’ (Video)
Matt Damon
Matt Damon took a break from laughing about George Clooney’s Tina Fey and Amy Poehler prank on “The Late Show with David Letterman” on Wednesday to address the loss of Philip Seymour Hoffman, who he believes was “one of the best actors to ever live.” “He was the best. He was incredible,” Damon said (above) of his “Talented Mr. Ripley” co-star. “He was a very special guy, and one of the best actors to ever live, I think. And that scene that I did with him in that movie was the best time I think I’ve ever had.

'Psych' - 'Cog Blocked' GIFs: An ode to Burton Guster
If you hadn't heard, this is "Psych's" final season (we know, we're upset too), but it's going out with a bang. There is nary a misstep between now and the series finale on March 26. Wednesday's (Feb. 5) episode starts the countdown to the end off right, with Dulé Hill's magnum opus as Burton Guster.

When John Russell, a man living a carbon-copy of Gus' life, dies in an apparent suicide, Gus is bound and determined to prove that he (Gus Russ) didn't kill himself. It was a ton of fun watching Gus be the head detective for once, since nobody believes him that Russell was actually murdered.

There's also the introduction of Emanuelle (Kali Hawk), a private detective and love interest for Gus. Here's hoping we haven't seen the last of her. It was also awesome to see Gus throw off the shackles of Central Coast Pharmaceuticals after all these years.

"And he was an even better person. He was a beautiful person. It's horrible," added Damon.

According to police reports in Us media, Hoffman had up to 50 bags of heroin in his home at the time of his death.

He reportedly had "one major, emotional" scene left to film on The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 when he died.

The actor's passing has prompted tributes from all over the entertainment world, while Broadway will dim its lights on Wednesday (February 5) in honour of his career.

Ripley's Wants to Put Real Shrunken Heads Under Your Christmas Tree
Robert L. Ripley
What do you want for Christmas this year?  A Playstation 4, perhaps?  The Friday the 13th: Complete Collection Blu-ray set?  How about something a little bit more unique?  Something slightly more bizarre?  Something a whole lot more twisted?  I think I've got just the thing for you!

I'll never forget the first time I visited a Ripley's Believe it or Not! museum, where I was absolutely frightened and enchanted by the sight of shrunken heads up for grabs in the gift shop.  I had just learned about them in the museum, and the process that headhunters used to turn actual human heads into miniature charms, and I couldn't believe that they were actually being sold in the shop - and they were pretty cheap, too!

I admit I was a twisted little kid, and I wanted one more than anything else in the world at that moment in time.  Proving...

“Kill Your Darlings”: 5 Reasons The Gay Movie Deserves More Oscar Attention
Oscar season is always a time for moviegoer euphoria and repugnance. Yes, we get to see a bunch of fab movies, but we’re also aware of which films will end up getting more (and perhaps undeserved) Academy attention thanks to star power and studio campaigning. For every warranted triumph like 12 Years a Slave, there are underdog crowd-pleasers like Enough Said, Philomena, and my pick for the true underrated gem of the year, Kill Your Darlings.

With a charming Daniel Radcliffe as a young Allen Ginsberg during his days at Columbia, the film explores the beginnings of the Beat movement with Ginsberg’s pals Jack Kerouac (Jack Huston), William S. Burroughs (Ben Foster), and a defiant beaut named Lucien Carr (Dane DeHaan), who murders longtime acquaintance David Kammerer (Michael C. Hall) under mysterious circumstances. The movie is as much a bildungsroman of Ginsberg as it is a pulpy caper, and...

Michael C. Hall in Dexter (2006)
The Dexter Finale: So, What Happened?
Michael C. Hall in Dexter (2006)
After eight seasons of blood and fun, Showtime's Dexter ended Sunday night on a note of ponderous sorrow and penitence. You might as soon have expected Hannibal Lecter to open a funeral home for the indigent, or the Talented Mr. Ripley to sculpt balloons into animals for nursing-home patients.

So what happened to Michael C. Hall's Dexter Morgan, the Miami forensic analyst who, in secret, was a serial killer who got off on murdering fellow serial killers?

Spoiler Alert: Plot details to follow.

He grew a thin red beard and, from what I could tell, became the very depressed employee of a logging company.
