When Nickelodeon first officially launched in 1979, it was considered to be a pioneer in its field. As the first cable network aimed at children, the channel was keen to remain true to its aims and even remained ad-free until 1984. Thus, it's fair to say that the long future of children's programming began at Nickelodeon.
