Beyoncé is facing some particularly familiar competition for an Emmy this year: her own husband.
As the 2025 Emmy nominations were announced on Tuesday, both Queen Bey and Jay-Z (real name Shawn Carter) were listed as nominees in the outstanding variety special (live) category; Beyoncé for her Beyoncé Bowl halftime show for the NFL’s Christmas Day game on Netflix, and Jay as one of the executive producers for Kendrick Lamar’s Apple Music Super Bowl Lix Halftime Show.
It’s hard to track how many times a husband and wife have ever competed against one another in the same Emmy category in the past, though it’s certainly not a common occurrence.
Both Beyoncé and Lamar’s halftime shows were critically lauded and groundbreaking. Beyoncé performed the first-ever Christmas Day NFL halftime show, while Lamar broke records for the most-viewed Super Bowl halftime show of all time with over 133 million viewers.

A father-daughter composing team was nominated, Hans Zimmer could win his first Emmy, and a music supervisor was nominated for three different shows — just some of the surprises among nominations for the 2024-2025 Emmys unveiled Tuesday morning by the Television Academy.
Thomas Newman and his daughter Julia Newman were nominated for their music for Netflix’s miniseries “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” a first in Emmy history for a two-generation, same-family collaboration on a single television score. And in another musical-family story, Oscar and Emmy winner Michael Giacchino’s son Mick Giacchino was nominated for his original music for HBO’s “The Penguin.”
Zimmer, who has two Oscars and four Grammys, has never won an Emmy but could this year with his nomination in the documentary music category for NBC’s “The Americas” (shared with fellow composers Anze Rozman and Kara Talve).

Sometimes it takes a 60-piece orchestra to effectively score a series; sometimes it takes just a single musician.
Those extremes are illustrated by two of this season’s most popular shows: the Apple TV+ satirical series “The Studio,” whose innovative percussion score is the work of Antonio Sanchez; and the acclaimed Disney+ drama “Andor,” which concludes the “Star Wars” origins-of-the-Rebellion saga with new music by Brandon Roberts.
Sanchez’s one-man band is a fun element of the Hollywood showbiz sendup “The Studio.” He didn’t know showrunners Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg prior to this, but it turned out they were using his all-drums score for the 2014 film “Birdman” as a temporary soundtrack for “The Studio” and liking what they were hearing.
“They sent me the first episode, and I could see that what was working for them was the percussion, the timing and the rhythm,” Sanchez says. His years...

On the heels of a critically acclaimed second season, it was announced that Andor had been submitted to the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in 23 different categories for the Emmy Awards. Two of those categories were for music, with composer Brandon Roberts for Music Composition for a Series and composer Nicholas Britell and showrunner Tony Gilroy for Original Music and Lyrics for the chilling song, "We are the Ghor."
The Star Wars franchise and its television series have a long history of being recognized by the Academy in the musical areas of production. Let's take a look back at it.
Kevin Kiner scored Star Wars: The Clone Wars during its run and received three nominations for his work in the music composition and directing categories. The last one was for work in the same category, but for a children's or animation program in 2021. Kiner also received a nomination for his...

Take out your Lightsabers and cross your fingers because Disney+ just hit the Emmy dream by officially submitting Andor Season 2 for not five, not ten, but 23 Emmy categories! Yep, the highly political Star Wars spin-off is ready to fight for that shiny golden trophy.
After Andor Season 1’s strong Emmy debut, earning eight nominations in 2023, Disney+ seems to be confident about this year’s campaign resonating better with voters, and maybe even securing a win. Therefore, from the Outstanding Drama Series to the directing and writing nods, the show aims to dominate the Emmy event. With voting starting June 12 and nominations dropping July 15, let’s check out at least one category where Andor Season 2 must conquer.

Let’s be honest, after Mon Mothma’s monologue in season 2 episode 9 of Andor, we all had the goosebumps moment.

Yes, Andor is a Star Wars show with political overtones, the story about a rebel army slowly building and organizing to fight a fascist oppressor. Yes, there are laser gun battles and Tie fighters flying. But, as guests at a THR Frontrunners panel spotlighting the acclaimed Lucasfilm show learned, it’s also a show about love.
“You can’t talk revolution if there’s no love involved; here is something romantic and naïve behind the idea of revolution,” said Diego Luna, the actor who plays budding rebel, Cassian Andor, to the crowd at the San Vincente Bungalows in West Hollywood earlier in May. Showing support in the audience were Ariel Kleiman, who directed the first six episodes of the show, Andor writer Tom Bissell, and the show’s composer Brandon Roberts. Also in attendance were Ryan and Brett Bergman, the sons of Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman.

Andor's storytelling has been praised by fans and critics alike. Part of that storytelling is the music throughout the series. As the Star Wars fanbase revels in the end of the show, they may have missed this one homage if they didn't sit through the credits.
Brandon Roberts, the composer for the second season, has written some fantastic music, in my opinion. Roberts' music for Bix's message when leaving Cassian is a moving piece. The composer, like anyone who tackles the franchise, owes a debt of gratitude to John Williams.
Williams composed the score for the original nine films of the Skywalker saga. His music provided rich motifs that people like Roberts can build upon. Now, Roberts seemed to have paid homage to Williams during the end credits of the final episode of Andor by introducing the music of Williams.
It was the end of William's Oscar-winning score to A New Hope.

Spoilers for Andor season 2, episode 7!Andorseason 2 episode 7 ended with the promise of escalation in the conflict on Ghorman and in the fight between the growing Rebellion against the Empire as a whole, which is why it may have been surprising to hear an opera song play over the end credits. It’s a rare choice for any piece of Star Wars media, but the boundary-breaking decision actually speaks directly to the events of the show. With lyrics by Tony Gilroy and music by Andor season 2 composer Brandon Roberts, the piece is a Ghorman-language aria titled “I Knew”.
ScreenRant is able to exclusively reveal the lyrics from the piece thanks to the generosity of Gilroy and Brandon Roberts, the latter of whom spoke extensively about his work on the best Star Wars TV series (according to ScreenRant’s Andor season 2 review) in an interview to be released after the finale. “The...

This article contains spoilers for Star Wars: Andor Season 2, episode 3, "Harvest."
Andor is back and ready to wreck our feelings. Week one wasn't kind to the characters and fans alike, as we saw a few major characters from Season 1 killed or met their demise off-screen.
One was in episode 3, "Harvest." You can see the entire recap here, but the "too long, don't read" version is that Mon Mothma's bestie became a problem. Tay Kolma helped her hide her Rebellion activities in her finances in Season 1. However, he fell on hard times, his wife left him, and he was basically ready to blackmail her for help. Luthen Rael and Mon saw the big issue developing. So, Luthen brought in his little Angel of Death, Cinta Kaz, to kill Tay to protect the Rebellion.
Mon, knowing she was condemning her best friend to death in the name of the Greater Good, got...

This article contains mild spoilers for "Andor."
"Andor" really is the best thing to happen to "Star Wars" since the Battle of Hoth. Creator Tony Gilroy and his team have crafted a sci-fi drama like nothing else in either the galaxy far, far away or on television in general.
This is a "Star Wars" show that is unequivocally a reflection of our political reality, staring at fascism right in the face and showing how terrifyingly mundane it can be. And yet, it is also a series distinctly set in the galaxy far, far away, a show that works precisely because it is a "Star Wars" title. Its commentary serves not just to hold a mirror to our world but to add complexity and nuance to a franchise that started as a space opera. Indeed, given how much "Andor" reflects our world, it has blurred the line a bit between what...

[Editor’s note: The following interview contains spoilers for “Andor” Season 2, Episodes 1-3.]
When Tony Gilroy decided that each block of “Andor” Season 2 episodes would take place a year apart, he knew those blocks had to cover “the most intense three days” of each given year. That started with the wedding, the “defining clock” for Episodes 1-3.
“Mon Mothma is just absolutely upended — and my God, is Cassian going to get back in time to save everybody from the Mina Rau? And I’ve got Eedy coming for lunch,” Gilroy said with a chuckle in a conversation with IndieWire. “On paper, everyone was like, really? But… her arrival at lunch is as heavy as any of those other things.”
Yes, as intense as things are with Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly), we simply cannot move on without addressing the new dynamic between Dedra (Denise Gough) and Syril (Kyle Soller). In Season 1, the two empire fanatics were separated as they closed...

Star Wars has had a rough run of late — the last theatrical release in the franchise, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, was derided by longtime fans and underwhelmed at the box office in 2019 — save for one shining property: Andor, creator Tony Gilroy’s acclaimed exploration of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story breakout character Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) in the years before he helped steal the plans for the Death Star and jumpstart the Rebel Alliance. The Emmy Award-nominated series returns this week for its second and final season with rave reviews and building enthusiasm among its fans. Andor Season 2 picks up one year after the events of Season 1, with the title character building his legend. The 12-episode season covers four years in total (every three-episode block tracks one year in the story), and will run right into the beginning of Rogue One.

What is the definition of “Star Wars music”? Maybe, to paraphrase Jimmy Carter, you just know it when you hear it.
Most people would answer by pointing to the man who invented and canonized this unique subgenre: John Williams, composer of nine Star Wars films from 1977 to 2019, the original themes for two spinoffs and a district of Disneyland. Williams established an orchestral, operatic musical language, rich with tuneful character themes and draped in classical tradition, a style now so deeply familiar and revered that it is, for many fans, holy scripture.
But as this sprawling galaxy continues to expand, the artists behind every new adventure are questioning what the musical topography should — and can — be.
In the most recent Darwinian leap, a trailer for the second season of Andor was soundtracked with the countrified clang of electric guitar in Steve Earle’s Iraq War protest anthem, “The Revolution Starts Now.

Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy had already written most of season two by the time season one became the most well-reviewed Star Wars title of the Disney era. The series about how small-time thief Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) became a Rebel hero in time for his ultimate sacrifice in 2016’s Rogue One was so well-received that one of the audience’s only quibbles actually pertained to the minimal number of alien characters. (Season two noticeably makes up for it.) But despite having the second 12-episode story planned out in detail, the road to the finish line became far more challenging than anybody ever expected.
For starters, in the months leading up to Andor’s series premiere in September 2022, Wall Street fell out of love with streaming, resulting in a major market correction that no longer valued subscriber growth projections. Consequently, Disney had to make some tough choices about Disney+ going forward.

For many people, a film like Land of Bad might not have enough to catch the eye. However, personally, almost everything about it made me instantly want to add it to my watchlist: a straightforward, action-driven premise based on a rescue operation; a quite decent cast with Liam (The Hunger Games) and Luke Hemsworth (Next Goal Wins), Russell Crowe (The Nice Guys), Ricky Whittle (The 100), and Milo Ventimiglia (This is Us); and most importantly, it’s directed by William Eubank, who made the overlooked yet loved amongst many of the people who’ve seen it, Underwater.

Cutler’s been working as an award-winning doc composer for 25 years, but up until now has never gotten close to winning a Primetime Emmy. “Look what happened: the very first time, two nominations,” she added. “I think it acknowledges how interest in docs has really [grown].”
