Trailer for 'Blood Brothers' Doc About Muhammad Ali + Malcolm X
James Stewart, Jeff Chandler, and Debra Paget in Broken Arrow (1950)
"They had the student / teacher relationship." Netflix has debuted an official trailer for a highly anticipated documentary film titled Blood Brothers: Malcolm X & Muhammad Ali, from filmmaker Marcus A. Clarke. Inspired by the book "Blood Brothers" written by Randy Roberts & Johnny Smith, the film examines the relationship and connections between these two legendary, iconic African-Americans. From a chance meeting to a tragic fallout, Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali's extraordinary bond cracks under the weight of distrust and shifting ideals. Through interviews with those closest to them — Malcolm X's daughter Ilyasah Shabazz, Ali’s brother Rahman and daughters Maryum and Hana — and cultural luminaries such as Cornel West and Al Sharpton, the docu illuminates their meeting, bonding, and eventual falling out over discord within the leadership of the Nation of Islam. Their evening in Miami was the inspiration for the excellent film One Night in Miami from last year, but...

Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali Doc 'Blood Brothers' Produced by Kenya Barris Set at Netflix
Muhammad Ali in When We Were Kings (1996)
A documentary about the friendship between Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali is coming to Netflix this fall, with Kenya Barris attached as a producer.

The film is called "Blood Brothers: Malcolm X & Muhammad Ali," and it's inspired by a book by Randy Roberts and Johnny Smith. It will incorporate never-before-seen archival footage of the two iconic figures, and it will debut on Netflix on Sept. 9.

Marcus A. Clarke is directing "Blood Brothers," and Barris is producing for Khalabo Ink Society along with Jason Perez. Erynn Sampson is executive producing for Khalabo Ink Society, as are Jonathan Chinn and Simon Chinn for Lightbox, and Simon George.

The documentary aims to portray the misunderstood bond Malcolm X and Ali shared. Their friendship was portrayed in the film "One Night in Miami" from director Regina King, which was a fictionalized account of an evening they spent with Sam Cooke and Jim Brown.

Kenya Barris’ Malcolm X & Muhammad Ali Doc Set At Netflix
Image
A documentary about the relationship between Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali from Kenya Barris and his Khalabo Ink Society has been set at Netflix.

Blood Brothers: Malcolm X & Muhammad Ali will launch on the streamer on September 9.

Based on Randy Roberts and Johnny Smith’s book Blood Brothers: The Fatal Friendship Between Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X, the feature doc comes from Barris’ previous overall deal with the streamer. He has since moved to ViacomCBS in a deal that gives him equity in BET Studios. It is the Black-ish creator’s latest doc for the streamer – he is also producing a doc on civil rights attorney Ben Crump.

The film, which Barris teased in a New York Times profile last year, features never before seen archival footage and the story behind the friendship between the civil rights leader and the boxing legend.

Marcus A. Clarke, who has helmed episodes of...

Theater Interview: Actor Jerod Haynes Shines in ‘The Royale’
Chicago – One of the most well-received 2015 theater performances in Chicago has been from actor Jerod Haynes as boxer Jay Jackson, in American Theater Co’s production of “The Royale.” Inspired by real life boxer Jack Johnson, the play is about setting up an early 1900s heavyweight championship, for the first time in U.S. history, between a black and white boxer.

The play is magnificently incendiary, told through a series of dialogue scenes and monologues. Haynes is magnetic as the mercurial Johnson, and communicates the intelligence, skill and frustration of being a notable African American in a less tolerant time. “The Royale” runs until March 29th, 2015, and is written by Marco Ramirez (“Orange is the New Black”) and directed by Atc ensemble member Jaime Castañeda.

5 Reasons Why You Should Be Heading To 'Nashville' This Season
Nashville finally premiered Wednesday night on ABC, and if you weren't like me, this was probably your first time watching the new hit compared to three or four times. Is there really any shame in admitting that? Not at all. Especially when it comes to this new series starring Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere. Though so many may have compared the show to Gwyneth Paltrow's Country Strong at first, that should all be put to rest by now. With a Friday Night Lights alum, country roots, competition, affairs and singing to boot, there's no way Nashville won't catapult into being considered the best new drama this season.

Here's 5 reasons why you should stay tuned (besides just the music):

1. Connie Britton

There should be a front seat with her name on it for the next several Emmy award shows. Without a doubt, Britton has nailed herself yet another fantastic role on television.

Steven Spielberg at an event for The 79th Annual Academy Awards (2007)
VFX men preach gospel of reality
Steven Spielberg at an event for The 79th Annual Academy Awards (2007)
Frankfurt, Germany -- Leading VFX supervisors emphasized the goal of realism as they dissected some of the summer's biggest tentpoles for standing room crowds here Tuesday as the Edit Filmmakers Festival wrapped.

"My premise is that I'd like to have at least 50% of the image in camera," said Industrial Light + Magic's Pablo Helman, VFX supervisor on "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," as he showed various shots in jungle and temple sequences that included numerous live-action elements. "I would not come up with a shot that is all CG or all miniature. The state of visual (effects) literally is such that people can tell if there is only one technique. I think it works better to put things together."

Academy Award winner John Nelson, the VFX supervisor on Jon Favreau's "Iron Man," similarly aimed to incorporate live-action elements where possible.

"Realism was beaten into me on a daily basis,...

Tom Rolf, an Oscar-winning editor ("The Right Stuff") and past recipient of Festival Honors, presented the award to Coates, who was accompanied by her son, writer-director Anthony Hickox.

"Anne is one of the great editors of all time," Rolf said. "Anne cares about taking gifted performances and making them the focus of the story."
