Drive-In Dust Offs: 10 To Midnight (1983)
Horror was so prevalent and popular in the early ‘80s that even the action genre wanted in on the…uh, action. Chuck Norris haiyah’ed a Michael Myers wannabe in Silent Rage (1982), so next up it was granite faced Charles Bronson’s turn to take on slashers with 10 to Midnight (1983), a sleazy yet fascinating trip through the mind of a serial killer. While it’s never as deep as it thinks it is, it’s smarter than it has any right to be.

Released in March, this Cannon production, co-distributed by MGM, recouped its 4.5 million plus a few million more at the box office. Certainly not Death Wish numbers, but it’s not really a Death Wish type of film (until it is). As for the critics, Mr. Ebert called it “a scummy little sewer of a movie”. He’s not completely right, though; the misogynistic male gaze is upended...

The Bridge at Remagen
What’s the best true-story WW2 combat film for pure-grit, no-nonsense tanks ‘n’ bombs ‘n’ crazy mayhem action on a giant scale? This non-stop battle epic gets my vote. George Segal and Ben Gazzara’s infantry dogs are suitably tough, cynical and desperate, especially when they’re repeatedly sent into danger. The history is fairly accurate — there was indeed a race to seize the last bridge across the River Rhine.

Timothy Omundson, Eric Bauza, Jordana Largy, and Graham Verchere in Woody Woodpecker (2017)
First Look at Woody Woodpecker Movie
Timothy Omundson, Eric Bauza, Jordana Largy, and Graham Verchere in Woody Woodpecker (2017)
According to IMDb, Woody Woodpecker is coming to theaters in 2017 in his first ever movie. Which is odd, since we've heard little to nothing at all about it. Today, we have a look at the annoying bird courtesy of Imp Awards. This one-sheet is for international audiences, which has us wondering if this is even going to get a proper release on America shores.

The Woody Woodpecker movie is taking on an environmentally conscious theme, and will tackle social issues with a deft hand at the comedy fans have come to know and love. The plot finds the hyperactive red-head entering a turf war with a big city lawyer who wants to tear down his home. This is all in an effort to build a house to flip. From the poster, we'd assume that this is a fully animated CGI movie. But we'd be wrong, as it's listed as being...

Come Fly With Me
Dolores Hart, Pamela Tiffin and Lois Nettleton are flight attendants aiming to snag three attractive, wealthy husbands right out of the air -- Karl Boehm, Hugh O'Brien and Karl Malden. Stephen King at an event for The Manchurian Candidate (2004)
Audiobook Review: Stephen King’s 'Joyland' Read by Michael Kelly
Stephen King at an event for The Manchurian Candidate (2004)
At first, he seems unsure. Hesitant, even. His voice is coming out metered, measured, and his reading feels more like recitation than performance. Then, something astounding happens: he hits dialogue, and everything ramps up. Voices, it seems, help Michael Kelly find his voice. For those used to listening to crime stories on audio, Kelly’s take on Joyland might be jarring. The narrators of Lawrence Block’s Matt Scudder series, for example – Alan Sklar, William Roberts, Mark Hammer – explore every word as a threat, pummeling headlong toward finales composed of shock and sadness (only Block himself, on Eight Million Ways to Die, seems to get to the deep sorrow of the character). On the other hand, the more stately readings of both Robert B. Parker’s Spenser series (Michael Prichard, who has taken on Tom Clancy’s techno-thrillers with the same endearing seriousness as John Irving’s The World According to Garp...

Rick Ross: Date Rape Lyrics "One of My Biggest Mistakes and Regrets"
Just one day after Reebok dropped him as their spokesman, Rick Ross released an official apology for date rape lyrics appearing on the Rocko track, "U.O.E.N.O."

In the song, Ross raps, "Put molly all in her champagne, she ain't even know it. I took her home and I enjoyed that. She ain't even know it."

On Thursday, the rapper posted a remorseful message on Twitter, saying, "I dont condone rape. Apologies for the #lyric interpreted as rape. #Boss," followed by, "Apologies to my many business partners, who would never promote violence against women. @ReebokClassics @ultraviolet."

After increased pressure for the brand to drop the "You the Boss" rapper, Reebok released a statement, saying, "Reebok holds our partners to a high standard, and we expect them to live up to the values of our brand. Unfortunately, Rick Ross has failed to do so. While we do not...

Extended Thoughts on ‘Saludos Amigos’
Saludos Amigos

Directed by Norman Ferguson, Wilfred Jackson, Jack Kinney, Hamilton Luske, William Roberts

Written by Homer Brightman, Bill Cottrell, Dick Huemer, Joe Grant, Harold Reeves, Ted Sears, Webb Smith, Roy Williams, Ralph Wright

Considering Saludos Amigos in comparison with its follow-up, The Three Caballeros, is akin to analyzing the pregame to the Super Bowl. (Our guest, Jeff Heimbuch, may disagree but will surely appreciate comparing these two movies to such a titanic worldwide event.) I’m often very vocal about not enjoying Disney’s release strategy for some of their lesser animated films—or, if you like, films they consider to be lesser even if the fans of those films are legion—specifically how they combine films in a Blu-ray combo pack. If you like Pocahontas and want it on Blu-ray, great! You’re cool if the film is packaged with its direct-to-dvd sequel, yeah? Well, you don’t have a choice,...

Report: No Surveillance Video Of Rick Ross Drive-By
Rick Ross
Police have yet to turn up any surveillance video that captured the apparent attempted murder of rapper Rick Ross Monday morning, according to Wsvn.

Investigators returned to the scene of the drive-by shooting in Fort Lauderdale Tuesday, seeking any video record of the crime -- but the station reports they have so far come up empty-handed. According to CBS Miami, detectives don't even have a description of the shooter or shooters.

Ross was leaving the Floridian restaurant on Las Olas Boulevard around 5 a.m. Monday morning, having spent the previous evening celebrating his 37th birthday at Liv nightclub on Miami Beach.

But when the Miami-bred rapper drove off in his 2011 Rolls Royce, with rumored girlfriend fashion designer Shateria Moragne-el along for the ride, gunshots rang out, reportedly from a second vehicle.

In his attempt to escape the hail of bullets, Ross -- real name William Roberts -- turned onto a...

Making Of The West: Mythmakers and truth-tellers
The “adult” Western – as it would come to be called – was a long time coming. A Hollywood staple since the days of The Great Train Robbery (1903), the Western offered spectacle and action set against the uniquely American milieu of the Old West – a historical period which, at the dawn of the motion picture industry, was still fresh in the nation’s memory. What the genre rarely offered was dramatic substance.

Early Westerns often adopted the same traditions of the popular Wild West literature and dime novels of the 19th and early 20th centuries producing, as a consequence, highly romantic, almost purely mythic portraits the Old West. Through the early decades of the motion picture industry, the genre went through several creative cycles, alternately tilting from fanciful to realistic and back again. By the early sound era, and despite such serious efforts as The Big Trail (1930) and The Virginian (1929), Hollywood Westerns were,...

Miami Gardens officers responded to a 911 call at approximately 7 a.m. Et after reports of gun shots. When police arrived at the scene of the crime they found a dead body in the yard of a house owned by the rapper, whose real name is William Roberts. Though Ross owns the property, it is not where he resides. "He lives at a different location,...

Sos Staff Gateway Films: Bill Mesce – ‘The Magnificent Seven’
There was no a-ha! moment, no seeing of the light, no epiphany. I’d loved movies since I was a kid, had been a buff since my early teens, but there was no one, shining instance of enlightenment where my relationship with film graduated to something — … Well, the kind of thing my Sound on Sight colleagues have been talking about this month with their “gateway” films. Instead, it was a cumulative experience for me; my road to that point was a long, winding, gradual one. Here and there along that road something would lodge in the ol’ gray matter, tickle at some deep place, until enough of those somethings gathered up over the years finally coalesced into a critical mass.

But I can tell you where that first turn in that road was; that first stop where I picked up that first something. I was six years old, it was...

[DVD Review] TCM Spotlight: Esther Williams, Volume 2
TCM has put out some great vintage film collections in the last few years. The collections usually have a fair collection of winners and so-so contenders who need the better films to make them palatable and Esther Williams: Volume 2 is no exception. However, to the volume’s credit, it has a better ratio than most sets with 4 good to great films supporting 2 mediocre ones. The set could very well help reel in some younger viewers as the films in this volume have a surprisingly modern feel to them all. This one maybe good, but it might still qualify as “for collectors only”.
